English writer best known as an influential historian of Roman Catholicism in America on which topic he penned 27 volumes; also a poet and literary critic. Two items: First an ALS 1p 5" X 8" San Rafael CA 1923 March 11. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. Cordial note to an admirer: "I generally destroy published mss. but I do nothing systematically & a little search has brought this to light. You will find it among the Epitaphs in my book 'The Last Knight. This is the original and I fear illegible draft. I am not an American except by residence." Boldly signed with an initialed postscript. Second the aforementioned draft an AMS 1p 3�" X 8�" n.p. n.y. Very good. On cheap lightly but evenly age toned stock Maynard pens quite a few lines in his incredibly miniscule script many of his letters are a mere 1/8th" tall many 1/16ths" tall. Titled "Epitaphs" the first example goes "of a philanthropist who after a long & useful life was impartially praised even by those newspapers which he did not own." Some deletions additions and corrections throughout. Signed 1�" long at the conclusion. This Canadian-American composer songwriter pianist singer and music educator was a popular vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley figure; Caruso put him "on the map" in 1913 when he recorded O'Hara's song "Your Eyes Have Told Me What I Did Now Know" and in 1914 he enjoyed his biggest hit "Tennessee I Hear You Calling Me"; during World War One his hit "K-K-K-Katy" sold more than one million sheet music copies; he was also an early ethnomusicologist recording and collecting Native American music on wax cylinders -- some of which he later sang himself in early Victor and Edison recordings; in 1945 he was elected president of the Composers-Authors Guild; all told he composed more than 500 popular and patriotic songs. Autograph Letter Signed "Harpo" 1p 7�" X 10�" Cathedral City CA n.y. probably summer 1961. Addressed to Don Woolf. Near fine. In this rare example of a Harpo ALS written on "El Rancho Harpo" letterhead Harpo writes to an executive with a greeting card publisher California Artists which published a series of Christmas cards featuring artwork by movie stars. "Here is my Xmas painting" he writes. "Hope it is not too late for your market. If you use it I would like to send them out as my own personal cards also." Harpo had long been interested in civil rights and the African-American cause so the closing of this letter is quite apropo: "Would like to stick to my original choice of N.A.A.C.P. to receive royalties if any." Full letters in Harpo's hand are quite scarce and one with choice unusual content such as this doubly so. The penultimate last living Abraham Lincoln descendant was this great-granddaughter of President Lincoln the daughter of Robert Todd Lincoln's daughter Jessie; she was an amateur artist and a recluse who rarely strayed out in public. Partly-printed ADS 1p 2�" X 2 3/4" Manchester Center Vermont 1936 January 15. Near fine. Personal check printed on a pale orange background and drawn on The Factory Point National Bank where her parents and grandparents also banked for many years filled out entirely in her hand in blue fountain pen for $545.00 made out to the Factory Point National Bank and signed large and bold at lower right. Usual cancellation perforations not affecting handwriting. Mary Beckwith autograph material is quite scarce in any form whatsoever. unknown

This "Chicago Times" sports cartoonist hit the big time with his 1932 creation "Grin and Bear It" which became nationally syndicated and kept him at the drawing board until 1974. Signed print 5�" X 6�" n.p. n.d. Near fine. Interesting glossy "slick" in printer's parlance of a daily "Grin and Bear It" installment: Three road workers with a pickup truck full of "Historical Site" plaques -- one holds a plaque and points enquiringly at a spot in the dirt while another barks out "No need to be too accurate about where you put them men. there's always arguments about those things anyway!." The artist boldly inscribed is above their image: "TO / WARREN / REEDER / my best / Lichty." Reeder was a well-known Indiana realtor autograph collector and author of the 1972 book "No Performances Today: An Account of the Events Leading Up to and Following the Train Wreck of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus Train". Unusual form a "slick" being an in-house production proof copy this one bearing two registration marks at the left margin. unknown

Uncle Miltie" a prolific comedian who began in vaudeville and became America's top television personality with "The Milton Berle Show" 1948-56. Signed Postal Cover 6�" X 3�" cancelled at New York NY on July 12 1973. Near fine. 5-cent "Voice of America" stamp and 3-cent "Francis Parkman American Historian" stamps at upper right. NOT a First Day Cover but an imaginative collector had this cover cancelled on Berle's 65th birthday he was born July 12 1908 in the city of his birth New York NY. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address -- but right on the "sweet spot" Berle signs bold and large 4�"! in black fineline. Given Berle's early popularity as a radio figure the "Voice of America" stamp makes this an appropriate cover. Small portion of original transmittal envelope present. Accompanied by a 4�" X 7" glossy color postcard reproduction of the front cover featuring his caricature of the 1948 paperback printing of his 1945 book "Out of My Trunk. paperback
