To her godson Eugène de la Rive at the Hotel d'Angleterre, regretting that he was unable to attend her ball, but admiring his decision to care for his friend instead, mentioning that a fever prevented her from visiting the salonnière Jane Marcet (1769-1858), his mother-in-law, asking him to invite Marcet and her family to dine with her the following Wednesday, and concluding with sending her husband's regards, who impatiently awaits her recovery, as she forbade him to see Marcet without her: "J'ai bien des regrets mon cher Eugène de la cause qui vous a privé des bals que je vous avais preparé je vous prie de le dire à votre Ami en ajoutant que je trouve que vous avez fait à merveille de rester à le Soigner. Votre petit Sacrifice est fort aimable et Madame Vanberg vous en saura bien bon gré [...] Je vous prie cher Eugène qu'il ne Soit question entre nous d'aucune Etiquette, j'aurai été il y a longtems chez Madame Marcet la remercier de me donner une si aimable et jolie Cousine, si je n'avais assez été très incommodée d'une petite fièvre bilieuse, je suis un peu mieux aujourd'hui mai[s] encore hors d'état de Sortir, faites agreer mes excuses à ces Dames mon cher Eugène, et demandez leur de nous faire l'honneur de venir diner en famille chez moi Mercredi prochain 6 fevrier [...] Monsieur de Tonnerre vous envoye mille amitiés et attend avec impatience mon rétablissement pour se presenter chez Madame Marcet attendu que je ne lui permets pas d'y aller Sans moi [...]". - Victoire, sister of the connoisseur Jean-Jacques de Sellon, learned to draw as a young girl from Bénigne Gagnereaux. "In 1815 she became the second wife of Aynard, duc de Clermont-Tonnerre (1769-1837). She is known to have been active as an amateur pastellist from an entry in the 1838 inventory of the Sellon collection. It has been suggested that the portrait of her great aunt, copied after Liotard, may correspond to this, and that she may be the author of an anonymous pastel sold in 1996" (Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800).‎

To the lawyer and collector Paul-Arthur Chéramy (1840-1912) about the completion of three paintings promised to the baritone and collector Jean-Baptiste Faure, who had sued him, requiring another three months to finish the work, not daring to remind Faure of the sum of 500 francs per painting that he promised him earlier: "Vous m'avez demandé [...] quel temps il me faudrait, en allant au plus court et en faisant de l'ouvrage soigné, pour terminer les trois tableaux de Mr Faure. Les Grosses blanchisseuses, que Mr Faure a prises telles quelles et supportées chez lui pendant deux ans au moins, sont à peu près terminées. Le plus long à finir serait le Champ de Courses. La blanchisseuse en silhouette est en bon état, non compliqué, et peut être menée vite. Je demande trois mois pour satisfaire mon poursuivant [...] Il me semble que je vous avais parlé d'une somme de 500 F par tableau achevé que Mr Faure m'avait un peu promise, autrefois. Je ne tiens pas à lui rappeler cette offre. Mr Faure a été trop longtemps mon créancier. Je l'ai fait trop attendre pour ne pas en rester là. N'en disons donc rien [...]". - In 1874, Degas had asked Faure to buy back for him from Durand-Ruel six paintings with which he was dissatisfied, undertaking to paint four large compositions in exchange. Twelve years later, when Degas had not finished some of these paintings, Faure successfully sued him for delivery. Chéramy was Degas' lawyer in the proceedings. - With a few tiny piercings.‎

To the painter Charles Soulier, complaining about their separation which he deems "abominable, damnable, miserable", hoping to be able to visit him during the winter, mentioning Soulier's employer, who apparently is in the habit of risking large sums of money, suggesting Soulier should invest his capital with him instead, concluding with sending love and the regards of his mistress, Eugenie Dalton: "Les séparations sont abominables, damnables, misérables, et cependant malgré le déchirement qu'elles causent, il vaut encore mieux se voir aussi de temps en temps. Si je puis comme je l'espère faire un petit séjour auprès de toi, nous en prendrons une dose pour quelque temps. Cela dépend comme je te l'ai dit de ce que les pratiques me promettront de besogne pour mon hyver [...] Je suis un cochon, je me conduis comme cent cochons et je prends à chaque instant la résolution de m'amender. J'ai vu un friend of mine qui est dans les affaires, dans les banques &c. et qui me disait que ton patron était un vrai fou, qui risquait souvent de se perdre. Cela m'a fait peine pour toi [...] Au reste tu seras toujours à même de placer tes capitaux plus avantageusement; avec les miens par exemple; tu es sûr qu'ils ne seront jamais pris par personne [...] La beauté [i. e. To an acquaintance about art and painters, stating his belief that the influence of the French impressionists Manet, Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Degas, Seurat and Pissaro weighs too heavy on the art of the then-present day for it to discover a completely new direction, and that impressionism is not finished yet: "Je pense que l'influence de Manet, de Monet, de Sisley, de Renoir, de Degas, de Seurat et de Pissaro pèse trop sur l'art d'à présent pour qu'on puisse trouver l'indice d'une direction vraiment nouvelle. Si vous entendez par Impressionnisme l'ensemble des tendances si différentes des peintres de 1870, non, l'impressionnisme n'est pas fini". - He points out that he does not know Gauguin's work well enough to discuss it, and claims that Whistler and Fantin-Latour did not linger on the literary nor on the technical side of their art, while Cézanne likes to assert technical preoccupations: "Je ne connais pas assez l'oeuvre de Gaugain [!] pour vous en parler, quant à Wisther [!] et Fantin-Latour ce sont des peintres sans phrase qui ne se sont attardés ni au côté littéraire ni au côté technique de leur art, tandis que Cézanne se plaît à affirmer très fortement des préoccupations techniques". - In conclusion, Dufy names several painters he frequently thinks about, and mentions his philosophy of trusting nature to provide the means necessary to realise his inspirations: "Des peintres à qui je pense souvent Rembrandt, Vélasquez, Le Lorrain, Manet, Seurat. Je demande à la nature les moyens de réaliser ce que la Vie m'inspire [...]".‎

‎Mathieu, Georges, French painter (1921-2012).‎

‎Collection of 10 autograph letters signed ("Georges" or "Mathieu"), 2 autograph postcards signed, 1 typed letter with 2 handwritten lines signed, 2 autograph letters, and 3 autograph dedications. [Paris], Gstaad, and Saint-Tropez, 1965-1967 and n. d.‎

‎Various formats. Altogether 50 pp. With four autograph envelopes. In French. Correspondence with his art dealer and friend Raymond Nacenta (1899-1979), director of the Galerie Charpentier in Paris, concerning upcoming exhibitions, artistic projects, payments, and holidays (among other subjects). Mathieu’s style of writing is hyperbolic and bursts with enthusiasm, often matched by expressive calligraphy. In the longest letter in this collection, one of only two dated letters, Mathieu showers Nacenta with thanks and compliments: "The benefits of which I found myself the object by your care [...] are too great to be the external mark of my merit in spite of the very particular esteem that you seem to have made of my person [...] Happy; yes, you have made me happier than I can say [...] Your generosity is so much greater in intention than that of the Great Alexander that it can never be rewarded by the thanks I could give. Ah, if I were allowed at least to grant you the diadem of the Persians or the praises of Homer! [...]” (25 April 1966). In a letter in red ink, dated to 24 June with no year, Mathieu describes his anticipation of a coming exhibition: "I am thus living my last days of calm before undertaking the greatest battles of my history. Bloody adventure, where it will please me to triumph with You". - In a letter that can be dated to 1971-72, Mathieu mentions to Nacenta that he had met President Pompidou and told him that "he will receive a charming medal". The letter closes with one of Mathieu's starkest hyperboles: "I curse the merchants who make me work in the cold of my icy workshop, and I curse the muses who seem to have abandoned me. In this season the cows would keep me warmer. What am I, alas, the little Jesus!". In 1972, a tin medal designed by Mathieu was issued to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Fifth Republic. Five years earlier, Mathieu had designed a bronze medal for the French railway company SNCF. On 20 Nov. 1967 Mathieu sent to Nacenta a zinc mould and some proofs necessary for casting the medal. In the accompanying letter, Mathieu states that he had talked to the general secretary of SNCF, Jules Antonini, and was ready to accept his payment in vouchers. - Mathieu was highly interested in French art and design of the 17th and 18th centuries. In the letters he mentions Charles LeBrun, Antoine Watteau, and the sculptors Philippe Caffieri and Pierre Lepautre who, for Mathieu, is "the incarnation of that so French measure which I flee from and which I need so much". In a postcard from Gstaad that is embellished with a beautiful calligraphic drawing in blue and red ballpoint, Mathieu exclaims: "Long live the masterpieces and artisanal rehabilitation", a motto that resonates with his art historical interests. A contemporary artist mentioned in the correspondence is Pierre-Yves Trémoin who "seems to be enchanted by the commission that you gave him". With respect to his own work, Mathieu reminds Nacenta: "You have forgotten that I was 'anti lithography of luxury numbered even for good works'" and therefore instead offered a gouache that "will not be multiplied". The two postcards are co-signed by a mutual friend named Solange, possibly the former actress and collector Solange Turenne. - All letters on Mathieu’s personal stationery with an embossed print of his design "Moult de Parte". This design reappears in three red seals on one of the envelopes. The brown ink and calligraphy of the address on this large cardboard envelope match the letter from 25 April 1966. Minor browning to the margins and occasional minor tears. Well preserved with traces of folds and some buckles.‎

To Winnaretta Singer, Princess of Scey-Montbéliard, about the purchase of Manet's "Olympia" from his widow, in order to offer it to the Louvre. - Asking her for the sum of 2,000 francs, the subscription agreed on, so that he can transfer all of the subscriptions to Manet's widow: "Devant prendre possession de l'Olympia, et remettre ces jours ci le montant des souscriptions à Madame Manet je viens vous prier de bien vouloir me faire parvenir, le plus tôt possible, le montant de votre souscription (2000 F) que vous m'avez chargé d'inscrire sous votre nom [...]" (16 Feb. 1890). - Confirming receipt of the funds and thanking her for her contribution, not yet daring to believe in the successful realisation of the project, which he expects to be met with hatred and stupidity, pointing out that in case the museum administration should "commit the foolish mistake" of refusing the painting, it would at least remain in their possession: "Chère Madame, je vous accuse reception et vous remercie de votre envoi de Deux-mille francs pour votre souscription à l'achat de l'Olympia de Manet. Je n'ose espérer encore un succès de l'entreprise (car il faut compter avec la haine et l'imbécilité courante) mais quoi qu'il arrive le tableau nous restera acquit pour être remis à l'état en temps opportun, si l'administration actuelle commet la bêtise de le refuser [...]" (20 Feb. 1890). - It was Monet who took the initiative in 1889 to launch a subscription to buy "Olympia" from Manet's widow, in order to offer it to the Louvre. In March 1890, he was able to buy the painting from Suzanne Manet for 19,415 francs, and the painting entered the Musée du Luxembourg, despite the reluctance of the administration; it is now in the Musée d'Orsay. The wealthy Winnaretta Singer, then Princess of Scey-Montbéliard, and future Princess of Polignac, was the principal donor, with 2,000 francs.‎

Adressen verso und einer hs. Liste. Mit einigen Beilagen (s. u.). Die frühesten Briefe dieser Sammlung fallen in Mündlers Zeit als "travel agent" für die National Gallery in London, nachdem er sich schon in Paris als Kunstsammler und -händler einen Namen gemacht hatte. Die späten Briefe, teilweise aus der Zeit der Pariser Commune, umfassen Anfragen an Otto Mündlers Bruder Hermann und seinen Neffen Albert mit Interesse an einer Evaluierung und Publikation des Nachlasses und dem möglichen Verkauf desselben. Zwei Schriftstücke stammen aus der Hand Otto Mündlers selbst (s. u.). - Vorhanden sind im einzelnen: - 18 Briefe des für seine Aufdeckungen von Falschzuordnungen berühmten Kunsthistorikers Giovanni Morrelli an Otto Mündler aus den Jahren 1856-67 mit fachkundiger Besprechung von Bildwerken der italienischen Renaissance und deren Verkauf, über die Arbeit und den Tod des Gemälderestaurators Molteni, zur Sammlung Sir Ch. L. Eastlake, außerdem zur politischen Situation Italiens, zu Morellis parlamentarischer Arbeit und Gesundheit. Mündler möge helfen, einen jungen italienischen Adeligen aus dem Hause Arconati zum "Kunstfreund" zu bilden: "Vorderhand ist er freilich noch gar zu sehr Schmetterling u. flatterhaft in seinen Neigungen, wer weiß aber ob es Ihnen nicht vielleicht gelingen sollte im Louvre in ihm für die alter Kunst ein ernsteres u. reges Intereße zu erwecken. Er [...] ist reich, hat Sinn für das Schöne; kurz er hätte die Qualitäten ein vollkommener Kunstsammler u. Mäcen zu werden [...]" (13. XII. 1863). - 73 Briefe von Carl von Lützow an Otto Mündler aus den Jahren 1863-70 zu ihrer Zusammenarbeit an der Zeitschrift "Recensionen" (Zeitschrift für Bildende Kunst mit Kunstchronik), zu Mündlers Beiträgen, der Besorgung der Illustrationen, den mitarbeitenden Autoren, Druckern, Restauratoren und Kupferstechern (u. a. Seemann, Lübke, Burger, Schwemminger, Cavalcaselle, Marggraff, Winterhalter, B. Suermondt, H. Semper, E. Engert), zu Auktionen (u. a. Rothschild-Terburg) und zu einem gemeinsam organisierten Kunstverkauf in Zusammenhang mit dem Schönbrunner Palais und "Frau Erlaucht" (20. XII. 1865). Lützow verstehe es der eigenen Ansicht nach, "den alten Wein" seiner "schriftstellerischen Freunde auf Flaschen zu ziehen und auf die Tafel der europäisch-amerikanischen Kunstwelt zu setzen" (20. I. 1869). Er erwähnt den Preußisch-Österreichischen Krieg (16. VI. 1866) und das Attentat auf Zar Alexander II. bei der Pariser Weltausstellung: Mündler dürfe in seinen diesbezüglichen Aufsatz "Ausstellungstrouble, Potentatenbesuchen, Polenpistolen etc. etc. hineingeheimnissen" (7. VII. 1867). Ein nicht signierter eh. Brief Otto Mündlers an Lützow mit Befürchtungen zum Krieg spiegelt Hoffnungslosigkeit wider: "Was wird überhaupt unter den gegenwärtigen Umständen aus unserem armen Blatte [...] was wird aus uns Allen - aus unserm armen zerfleischten Vaterland werden? [...]" (12. VII. 1866). - 14 Briefe von Carl von Lützow an Hermann Mündler aus den Jahren 1870-78 zur möglichen eigenständigen oder auszugsweisen Veröffentlichung von Otttos Nachlass, seiner Tagebücher und Manuskripte, sowie zum Verkauf von Aquarellen von Rudolf von Alt. - Ein eh. In French, to his friend, the collector Victor Chocquet (1821-91), sending good wishes for the New Year from Capri: "I am writing to you from an ideal small island, where one lives outside in plain sunshine surrounded by the blue sea, and orange trees, and olive trees and flowers. Otherwise, I am thinking of Paris, of the old friends that I left there, and I do not wish to let a new year come round without renewing the sincere marks of my deep friendship and gratitude to them. Therefore I wish you, my good friend, and Madame Chocquet plenty of years, one better than the other. I would not tell you anything else in this letter". In a short postscript to this charming letter, Renoir sends greetings to Paul Cézanne: "A good handshake for Cézanne when you will see him". - Chocquet had discovered Renoir in the late 1870s and commissioned several paintings - an important development in the artist's career. Renoir's 1881/82 trip to Italy, where he studied the masterworks of Titian and Raphael, marks the beginning of his shift toward post-Impressionism. His small oil painting "Capri marina" is already indicative of this change, especially Renoir's later colour palette. - Traces of folds. Some browning.‎

To the painter Jacques-Émile Blanche (1861-1942), announcing his return to Paris and a visit to Blanche's studio in order to see the progress of the young painter: "Je suis à la campagne depuis fort longtemps et je rentrerai à Paris vers le 5 ou 6 Janvier. J'irai voir les études nombreuses que vous avez du faire depuis le temps que je ne vous ai vu, certain de trouver encore des progrès. Je pense que je vous trouverai en bonne santé ainsi que votre père et votre mère. J'irai me faire pardonner ma longue absence [...]. Je ne vous en dis pas plus. J'aime mieux causer que d'écrire". In a short postscript, Renoir explains that a painful dental inflammation delays his return: "Je ne puis rentre maintenant à cause d'une fluxion de dent, qui me bouche un oeil et me fait souffrir beaucoup". - Jacques-Émile Blanche was to become one of the most sought-after portraitists of the French upper-class and artistic élite. His 1892 portrait of Marcel Proust at the Musée d'Orsay is widely known today. - Very slightly browned. With collector's marks in pencil.‎

According to varying accounts, Toulouse-Lautrec used the studio between ca. 1886 and 1897. - Minimally stained.‎

Pneumatic letters to the publisher and gallerist Lèon Deschamps, concerning the publication of Toulouse-Lautrec's famous lithograph "Irish and American Bar, rue Royale - The Chap Book". In the letter from 18 October, Lautrec announces the test prints for the following day and expresses his hope that they will be able to "print right away" at the print shop of Edward Ancourt, where he invites Deschamps to meet him: "Malgré tous nos efforts nos essais ne seront terminés qu'à midi demain samedi. Venez chez Ancourt à 11h ½ vous verrez probablement la chose. S'il n'y a pas d'accident on pourra tirer tout de suite". - In the second letter, Toulouse-Lautrec expresses his disappointment with Ancourt, who had stood him up. He asks Deschamps to arrange a new appointment, underlining that he has to be there for the test prints: "Ancourt m'a posé un lapin, il m'a dit-il prévenu, je n'ai rien reçu. Nous voilà remis aux calendes grecques car j'ai à faire lundi et p.être mardi. Voyez avec lui pour arranger la chose, et prévenez moi. On ne peut pas faire les essais sans moi. Je regrette ce qui arrive mais je n'y puis rien". - "The Chap Book" was ultimately printed by the Imprimerie Chaix and published in Deschamp's magazine "La Plume". - The earlier letter somewhat creased in the right margin. ‎Friendship album of Clara Lafontaine. St Petersburg, 1825-1832.‎

‎Oblong 8vo (197 x 114 mm). French and German manuscript on paper. 41 ff. with 12 entries. Includes 13 watercolour drawings, 6 ink and ink wash drawings, 5 pencil drawings, 1 gouache and 1 embroidery. Contemporary giltstamped full brown calf with ornamented brass clasp and bosses to the corners and centres of both covers, the centre bosses inscribed with "Souvenir" (front) and the monogram "CL" (back). With light blue leather end papers. All edges gilt. Remarkable friendship album kept by Clara Lafontaine, daughter of Pierre François Lafontaine, a French emigrant in St Petersburg and officer in the service of the Tsars. Clara’s brother Jean Baptiste Joseph Lafontaine (1796-1859) returned to France in 1802/03 and became successful as a playwright under the pen-name W. Lafontaine. - The family was associated with bourgeois expatriates in Russia as well as with the local bourgeoisie and aristocracy. Three entries stem from members of the princely Trubetskoy family. With some degree of certainty they can be identified with Sofia Andreevna Trubetskaya (1796-1848) and her children Sergey Vasilyevich Trubetskoy (1814-59) and Maria Trubetskoy (1819-95). Additionally, a beautiful loosely inserted gouache showing a tulip and other flowers is inscribed: "Given by the princess Marie Trubetskoy". Sergey Vasilyevich, who became a cavalry lieutenant and was the legal father of the famous princess Sofia Sergeyevna Trubetskaya, purportedly an illegitimate child of Tsar Nicholas I, enriched his sentimental entry with a swan feather. - The first entry in the book can be attributed to Franz Ludwig von Wissell (1797-1853), who served in the Hanoverian army and rose to the rank of an Lieutenant Colonel. Wissell’s entry is followed by five pages of watercolours, one on blue paper, all by the same hand. The drawings of a man in Persian costume, of an English bulldog, a ruin at night, a remarkable and charming Cupid with bow and arrow in Russian costume, and an infantryman in a blue and white uniform are all inscribed “Meurville” or “Meurville ainé"; while they are of high quality, the artist remains unidentified. - The following entry, a long, humorous narrative describing a friendship book containing rather abortive entries, can with some likelihood be ascribed to the French educator Jean François Antoine Cournand (1797-1842), who lived in St Petersburg with his family and is the father of the pianist and last Chopin student Marie Roubaud de Cournand. An entry by one "Catinka" or Catherine Ratouin from 25 August 1825, apparently the day she left St Petersburg for France, seems to be connected to the previous entry, as it is followed by a watercolour drawing and a washed pencil caricature which are both signed by Courand. A particularly charming, anonymous watercolour drawing on one of the following pages shows a horse-drawn sleigh with two people. The page is marked by a pressed shamrock. - Both Gotthard J. Fehst (29 March 1829) and Adolph Vincent Martinsen (10 June 1830) are members of prestigious bourgeois families from Reval (now Tallinn) who left their entries in Clara Lafontaine’s book. Fehst or another family member also contributed a small pencil drawing of Roman ruins on blue paper. The page containing Fehst's entry is loose, with another ink drawing of a bird-hunting scene signed by "Meurville ainé" on the verso. The only German entry "Je schmerzlicher die Trennung / Je freudiger das Wiedersehen", dated 22 July 1830, remains unidentified. - Carla Lafontaine’s young nieces Sophie and Camille wrote charming entries on 26 April 1832 in St Petersburg. While the six-year-old Sophie left mostly scribbles, Camille expresses her sadness about the geographical distance between her and her beloved aunt: "Ma bonne tante je te regrette de tout mon cœur et t’aime de même, pense souvent à ta petite nièce". The final entry can be attributed to the German-British merchant Franz Heinrich Hermann Overbeck (1804-88), father of the theologian Franz Overbeck (1837-1905) who would become known as a close friend of Friedrich Nietzsche. The final two drawings in the album are probably the most striking ones: a pencil sketch of a hound and a washed ink drawing of another hound, both by the same hand. Intriguingly, the pencil sketch is signed "Lagrénée": both Louis Jean François Lagrenée and his younger brother Jean-Jacques were French painters briefly active in St Petersburg, but they died well before the album was started. However, Louis-Jean's son Anthelme-François Lagrénée (1774-1832) followed in his father’s footsteps and spent time in St Petersburg during the 1820s in the service of Tsar Alexander I. As the two drawings are pasted into the album and are of a quality suggesting a trained artist, they may well be the work of Anthelme-François Lagrenée. - Leather somewhat chafed, interior showing some brownstains and browning to the margins, but well preserved.‎

‎Deutsche, lateinische und französische Handschrift auf Papier. 90 Bll. mit ca. 90 Einträgen, 3 Aquarellen und einer Silhouette. Lose in grüner Pappmappe der Zeit mit Rückenvergoldung, aufgeklebtem Rückentitel "Pro Memoria", goldener Deckelbordüre, goldgeprägtem Monogramm "G TH B 1790" und Goldschnitt. Außergewöhnlich hübsches Album amicorum, das durch oft sehr persönliche Einträge enger Freundinnen und Freunde des Besitzers sowie durch schöne Kalligraphie besticht. Der 1771 geborene Georg Thomas Bach besuchte die Realschule seiner Heimatstadt Nürtingen, wo er später selbst lehren sollte, und setzte seine Ausbildung wohl in Stuttgart oder Nürnberg fort. Das Stammbuch lässt nicht auf ein studentisches Milieu schließen; die Einträge stammen zumeist von evangelischen Pfarrern, Vikaren und Pädagogen. Neben zahlreichen württembergischen Kleinstädten besuchte Bach auch Altona, Frankfurt am Main und Göttingen. - In Nürtingen trug sich der Begründer der dortigen Realschule Jakob Friederich Klemm (1733-93) ein, dem auch die Einführung des von John Spilsbury um 1760 erfundenen Puzzles in Deutschland zugeschrieben wird, ferner der erste Realschullehrer (und damit ein Amtsvorgänger Bachs) Georg Friedrich Ettensberger (1756-1824), der Verwaltungsbeamte Karl Christoph Friedrich Gock (1776-1849), Friedrich Hölderlins Halbbruder, sowie Nathaniel Köstlin (1744-1826), Diakon und Privatlehrer Hölderlins. Bachs Mutter Veronika Dorothea verabschiedet ihren Sohn mit einem Psalmenzitat und den Worten: "Diese Lehre gibt dir mit auf den Weg deine dich liebende Mutter". - In Stuttgart verewigte sich Konrad Friedrich Schüle (1771-1833), Gesellschafter des Textilunternehmens Kolb & Schüle, im nahegelegenen Grafenberg Christian Gottlob Pregizer, der spätere Stadtpfarrer von Haiterbach und Namensgeber der radikalpietistischen "Pregizer-Gemeinschaft". Mit Christoph Friedrich Cuhorst (1727-93), Johann Immanuel Friedrich Schmid (1756-1821) und Johann Christian Zügel (1723-95) sind auch die Pfarrer von Unternsingen, Bickelsberg und Ditzingen im Stammbuch vertreten. Christoph Ludwig Flattich (1756-1822) stand seinem Vater, dem bedeutenden evangelischen Pädagogen Johann Friedrich Flattich, als Vikar in Münchingen zur Seite, als er seinen Eintrag verfasste; später wirkte Flattich als Pastor in Suppingen. Am 14. Juni 1790 trug sich Johann Ludwig Mannhardt (1749-1816) ein, Klosterhofmeister in Maulbronn und Bruder des bedeutenden Theologen Johann Wilhelm Mannhardt. - In Altona traf Bach 1791 auf Hinrich van der Smissen (1742-1814), Enkel des gleichnamigen berühmten mennonitischen Unternehmers und Reeders, sowie auf zwei weitere Mitglieder der Familie und den niederländischen Botaniker George Voorhelm Schneevoogt (1775-1850) in jüngsten Jahren. Interessant sind auch zwei 1794 entstandene Einträge aus Nürnberg: zum einen der des Spezereienhändlers Johann Christoph Karg (1733-1806), ein enger Freund und Briefpartner Lavaters, zum anderen der von Georg Michael Eisenbach (1728-1804), der 1783, zwei Jahre nach Erlass des Toleranzpatents Josephs II., erster Pastor von Eferding in Oberösterreich wurde. Wie bereits in früheren Positionen geriet Eisenach mit den Kirchenobrigkeiten in Konflikt und wurde 1788 aus Österreich ausgewiesen, woraufhin er sich als Privatlehrer in Nürnberg niederließ. - Ein Mitglied der Familie van der Smissen ergänzte seinen auch kalligraphisch herausragenden Eintrag um ein kleines Aquarell der Zwei-Wege-Metapher. Der Eintrag eines Christian Gottfried Hellfeld in Schleusingen ist verso um ein hübsches kleines Emblem mit französischem Motto ("Vivre pour mourir et mourir pour vivre") bereichert. Louise Huzelin, Tochter des Schnaitheimer Pastors Ludwig Christoph Huzelin (1725-83), begegnet uns auch als Silhouette. Ein besonders schönes Aquarell, das eine Ideallandschaft mit phantastischen Blumenornamenten zeigt, lässt sich keinem Beitrag zuordnen. Zuletzt können auch die besonders intimen Zeilen einer Maria Bach hervorgehoben werden. Der ursprüngliche Eintrag vom 22. April 1830 wurde verso zweifach ergänzt: "Wer wünscht so viel zu ihrem Glück / Als die welche dieses schreibt / O denken sie recht oft zurück" sowie "Fält [!] Ihnen dieses Blätchen in die Hände so erinnern Sie sich an den froh verlebten Abend im Juli 1843 und denken sie auch zuweilen in müssigen Stunden an [...]". - Einband minimal bestoßen. Die Seiten von Sammlerhand in Blei numeriert, teilweise minimal fleckig und angestaubt, mit vereinzelten kleinen Einrissen und Knicken.‎

To the French historian Jules Bonnet (1820-92) in Clarens about the correspondence of the French general Bertrand de Gordes (1513-78) in his possession. He mentions a secretary's letter addressed to Gordes, signed by the officer Antoine de Crussol (1528-73), who added an autograph note calling upon Gordes to attend Holy Mass every day. He concludes with the happy news of the birth of his second son: "Je possède la correspondance originale [...] de Mr. de Gordes, lieutenant de Roy en Dauphiné pendant la plus grande partie des guerres de religion [...] Or la lettre à laquelle vous faites allusion lui et adressée par Crussol, elle est écrite par un secrétaire, et datée de Thoulouse [...] mars 1565. Mais aux dessous de cette date, et avant de signer, Crussol a ajouté de sa main: 'Sourtout je vous prie, allez tous les jours à la messe [...]' Notez que ce Crussol n'est pas Jacques de Crussol, dit d'Acier, qui commanda long-temps les réformés du Languedoc, mais bien son frère ainé Antoine, lieutenant de Roi dans la même province [...] Je suis bien charmé, mon cher ami, de pouvoir vous faire connaître ce petit détail en échange des communications bien autrement importantes que vous avez eu l'obligeance de me faire. Briefe als Antwort auf einen Brief von Ancina auf demselben Blatt. Ancina erwähnt einige strittige Punkte der Kirchengeschichte, etwa die Teilnahme des Athanasius von Neapel an der Synode von Rom: "An verum sit, Athanasium Neapolit. Episcopum a Nicolao I. Romano Pontifice Romam vocatum fuisse ad Synodum contra Io. Ravennatem Schmiaticum coactam [...]" (Ex Eremo Capitis Montium, 17. VII. 1592). Baronio betont in seiner Antwort, dass seine Teilnahme nicht auszuschließen sei: "Nihil est quod obstet, quominus verum esse possit., nam Synodus Romae habita est a Nicolao pp. primo in causa Io. Ravennen. an. Dom. 862, sed videndum, num hic, vel eius nepus [...] Athanasius Episcopus Neapolitanus is fuerit [...]" (o. O. u. To Eugène de la Rive in Geneva, expressing his condolences on the death of the recipient's mother, Marguerite-Adelaïde de la Rive, née Broissier, mentioning his own mother's severe illness the previous year and the strong relationship between the two women, which he says resembled that of sisters rather than cousins. He also mentions the recent death of his uncle, the Swiss pacifist and philanthropist Jean-Jacques de Sellon (1782-1839), and concludes with sending his mother's and his aunts' love: "Ma tante Cécile vient de nous apprendre la perte terrible que vous avez faite, je ne veux pas tarder un instant à te temoigner toute la part que j'y prends, ainsi que la douleur que cette nouvelle me fait eprouver. Je sens combien tu dois souffrir, l'année dernière à cette heure ci, ma mère était mourante aux bains de Vaudier, et j'ai appris alors ce que c'était que le lien qui unit un fils à sa mère [...] Elle avait des rapports frappants avec ma mère. C'était la même bonté, la même douceur, le même esprit, on aurait pu croire qu'elles étaient soeurs, tant il y avait de ressemblences en elles. Cody / Buffalo Bill". - Der seinerzeit in Wien und München als "Büffel Willy" apostrophierte Cowboy und Unterhaltungskünstler gastierte mit seiner 1883 gegründeten "Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show" 1890 und 1906 in Wien. Für letzteres Gastspiel, das im Mai und Juni des Jahres drei Wochen lang zu sehen gewesen war, wurde eigens eine 12.000 Zuseher fassende Amphitheater-Arena in der Nähe der Rotunde gebaut, um den 800 Ensemblemitgliedern und 500 Pferden Platz zu bieten. "In 20 Spieltagen kamen mehr als 200.000 Zuschauer - ein enormer Erfolg" (Wiener Zeitung vom 30. III. 2016).‎

His motives for leaving the Laurent-Bergeron Railway, writes Aubert, do not reflect poorly on his honour or skills: "L'ancien chef de gare de Lausanne, Mr. Blanc, m'a parlé de son vif désir de rentrer dans les chemins de fer de la Suisse occidentale, et m'a prié de le récommandre auprès de vous. Principe Giuseppe Landgravio d'Hassia Darmstat mio Cugino di vestir l'abito Ecclesiastico, non meno che il vivissimo interesse, che hó per ogni più placisibile anuanzamento d'un Principe santo à me congiunto, mi obbligano á raccomandarlo alla validissima protezione di V. Em. pertutto quello possa essere di suo vantaggio in tale suo stato: La prego dungue á compiacersi d'essergli sempre propizia colla poderosa sua assistenza, e cogli atti della singolare, e generosa sua bontà nelle di lui occorenze, ed assicurandola, che siccome riceveró in mestessa ed á mio debito particolare tutt' i favori, che L'Em.
