Per Wikipedia Charles Wakefield Cadman 1881 - 1946 Was An American Composer. For 40 Years He Worked Closely With Nelle Richmond Eberhart Who Wrote Most Of The Texts To His Songs Including Four American Indian Songs. She Also Wrote The Librettos For His Five Operas Two Of Which Were Based On Indian Themes. He Composed In A Wide Variety Of Genres. He Was Greatly Influenced By American Indian Music Which He Had Been Studying Especially Through The Work Of Ethnologists Alice Fletcher And Francis La Flesche. Fletcher And La Flesche Had Studied The Omaha Tribe And Recorded Their Music And Stories. Having Published Several Articles On American Indian Music Cadman Became Regarded As One Of The Foremost Experts On The Subject. In 1908 He Began Touring To Present Lectures Known As The "Indian Talk" Or "Indian Music Tour" Accompanied By The Performance Of Native American Music And His Own Compositions. Tsianina Redfeather Muscogee / Cherokee Billed As "Princess Redfeather" Performed As A Singer On Some Of His Tours. Her Signature Song Was Cadman's "From The Land Of The Sky-Blue Water". Another Such Song Was "At Dawning" Which Became Widely Known In The 1920S. Cadman Toured Both The Us And Europe For 25 Years To Present This Lecture. Cadman Drew From Omaha And Iroquois Songs For His Four American Indian Songs Op. 45 Which Became His First Commercial Success In 1909. This Was Aided By Performances Of These Songs By Noted Soprano Lillian Nordica Who Was On A Concert Tour. In The Summer Of 1909 He Went To Nebraska To Study The Music And Traditional Instruments Of The Omaha And Winnebago Tribes. He Lived With The People On Their Reservations Learning To Play Their Instruments. During His Trip To The West He Met Francis La Flesche An Omaha Ethnologist Who Was Working With The Smithsonian Institution On Studies Of The Omaha And Osage Peoples. Cadman Assisted Him In Making Recordings On Wax Cylinders Of Traditional Songs. These Works Are Now Held By The Library Of Congress And Some 60 Songs Are Available Online. Cadman Drew From La Flesche's Recordings And He Was Also Interested In His Stories Collected From These Peoples. They Began Work That Year On An Opera; Cadman Had Already Started To Pull Melodies From Three Printed Collections Of Omaha And Pawnee Music Published By Ethnologist Alice Cunningham Fletcher Who Also Was With The Smithsonian. The Songs Were Transcribed Or Harmonized By Others. Cadman And Eberhart Worked Closely With La Flesche By Mail And He Continued To Provide Cadman With Omaha Melodies For The Opera. They Were Not Permitted To Use Melodies Which La Flesche Had Collected For An As Yet Unpublished Report For The Smithsonian. Together With Librettist Nelle Richmond Eberhart Cadman And La Flesche Worked Together For About Three More Years To Create An Opera Based On Omaha Stories And Music. Cadman Made Occasional Indian Music Tours To Raise Money For The Project. He Moved To Denver In 1911. Cadman Completed The Music For Da O Ma 1912 And Sought A Venue For It But It Was Never Produced Or Published. It Was Rejected By The Boston Opera Company The White-Smith Music Publishing Company Which Had Published Numerous Songs By Cadman; And The Metropolitan Opera. In The Course Of Their Work The Team Had Changed The Opera From An Omaha To Sioux Lakota/Dakota Setting. A small group of autograph and typed letters signed by or relating to Walter de la Mare all but 2 addressed to Miss Vivien Barton some time with James P. Pinker London Literary Agents. All with usual folds; in good condition.
The first a T.L.S. "W.J. de la Mare" Hill House Taplow Buckinghamshire 4th. Oct. 1939. He writes that he is "indeed sorry you have felt compelled to give up your work with Mr. Pinker.you have always been so kind to me and I shall hate to think of your not being there. I should of course be interested to hear what the actual difficulties were but that no doubt is a personal thing.". The second letter is dated Oct. 31 1939 also signed "W.J. de la Mare" typed with autograph correction and addition. He writes that he hopes her application to work at the Admiralty will be successful and adds "I am glad you have given me such scope in that 'wholly imciompetent'.". The third T.L.S. dated May the 17th & signed "W.J.dlm" he writes regarding a cheque he has received from Albert Bonnier "in respect to the English Continental Zephyr of Miss M." and with autograph postscript "I hope you havn't been 'Casting any Clouts' - these Winds!". Two concertina-bound autograph books. <br> <br>Fan-shaped concertina-bound autograph book 13 x 20cm widest point 30 thick cream leaves with approx 160 manuscript autographs gilt-flecked endpapers gold-patterned brocade cover with a linen label all edges gilt enclosed in a linen fan-shaped sleeve with toggle closures and paper label binder's stamp to the inside cover; the linen worn and faded and the album split at two openings but in very good condition. <br> <br>Small concertina-bound autograph book 12 x 9cm approx 25 thick paper leaves 5 red temple stamps and 4 pencilled autographs sable silk-covered boards chipped paper label in very good condition. Two autograph books dating from 1933-1940 which belonged to the Australian Japan expert author and broadcaster George Caiger 1903-1991. In 1930 after teaching in England and Australia Caiger moved to Japan where he taught English at Musashi Koto Gakko a private school in Tokyo and later also lectured at the Peers' School in Tokyo. Caiger wrote numerous essays and books on Japan and developed friendships with some leading figures in Japanese society and politics. He returned to Australia in 1940 and later became an intelligence officer and translator for the Australian military during World War II before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. <br> <br>His beautiful fan-shaped Japanese autograph book contains a collection of signatures messages and some ink sketches. The earliest of these date to 1933-1934 and include farewell messages from friends written in May 1934 when Caiger and his wife Margaret returned for a short period to Australia. Others date from 1939-1940 and include farewells from the time when the Caigers left Japan for good in late 1939. An interesting set of signatures on the last page includes the annotation "SS Atuta Maru 00.01am 1st January 1940 Arafura Sea" clearly written as passengers celebrated a rather uncertain New Year on their voyage home from Japan. There are also two charming ink sketches - one of Mt. Fuji - drawn by a friend named Y. Nakatsuka shortly before the Caigers' departure from Japan. Autographs include those of Australian diplomat H. R. Sawbridge and Christian missionary Clarence Gillett who later worked with Japanese internees in the US during WWII. <br> <br>A second smaller concertina-folded autograph book is mostly blank but contains a few pencilled-in names on the first page and some souvenir ink-stamps including one labelled "Daibustu Nara 1.1.33" in the rear. <br> <br>Fascinating autograph realia from the Imperial Japanese period collected by a well-known Australian broadcaster. . hardcover

Autograph Letter Signed
This most renowned of British naval heroes is almost as famous for his scandalous open affair with one of the most famous and beautiful women in England the married Emma Hamilton despite having lost most of his teeth the use of his right eye and his right arm in various military successes; his nautical victories against the French made him Napoleon's nemesis; killed aboard his ship "Victory" in the battle of Trafalgar. ALS 1p 7" X 8¼" Burnham 1793 February 2. Addressed to "Gentlemen." Near fine. A boldly penned and handsome example of Nelson's scarce right-handed penmanship four years prior to losing his right arm in a July 1797 battle and having to learn to write left handed. Rather cryptic financial content reading in full: "I am glad to hear You did not bring our trust money into the Lands as they had risen so very much. I shall be in Town on tuesday Evening & shall probably see Mr. Creed on Wednesday therefore please to let the money Remain in your hands 'till you hear farther from my Brother or myself. I am Your Very Humble Servant." Page & Creed were Nelson's bankers so the reference to Mr. Creed almost certainly refers to that firm. This choice and scarce letter has been handsomely displayed under a pale green matte with gold filigree alongside a stunning 6½" X 8¼" hand-colored steel engraved portrait of "Horatio Viscount Nelson" engraved by W. Finden and "From the original of Hoppner in / His Majesty's Collection." This early 19th century portrait is in fine condition and bears a large incredibly ornate hand-colored decorative border; it depicts Nelson almost full-length in full military regalia with his empty right sleeve pinned to his chest. This pair is framed under glass in a 1" contemporary walnut frame overall dimensions 21" X 15". A superb presentation -- Nelson in his most desirable that is right-handed form. unknown

This noted Montana-born children's book author/illustrator is remembered for "The Runaway Sardine" her first book 1929 and her popular "Kristie" series as well as many other illustrated titles: "To Market! To Market!" 1930 "Till Potatoes Grow on Trees" 1938 "Too Fast for John" 1940 "The Topsy-Turvy Family" 1943 "The Greedy Goat" 1944 "Drusilla" 1963 and others. Offered here is the near-complete original ink-and-watercolor artwork for an early title illustrated by Brock: Louise F. Encking's translation of E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic "The Nutcracker and the Mouse=King" published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago in 1930 when Brock was just starting out and hungry for work. Consists of 25 heavy onion skin leaves each two sheets either stapled or tipped together at top approximately 11½" X 14½" 14 containing a large single black ink line drawings six signed by Brock at lower margin and the remainder mostly containing two small drawings per sheet. All 25 have an overlay sheet on top of the ink drawings each bearing hand colored elements. Below each ink drawing Brock pens a caption which often differs from that which appears in the published book. Very good overall. Minor occasional soiling most about edges and edgewear. Bold and handsome illustrations for almost the entire book some with pencilled editor's notes in the margins including one or two illustrations omitted from the published book. Front cover art is absent present only in the form of an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white photograph used for production purposes. The simple rear dust jacket art is present on a 12½" X 16½" heavy card stock board as well along with an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white production photograph of same. A fabulous and quite scarce archive that shows the creative process at work. unknown

Original space-flown flag 5½" X 4¼" and cloth patch 4¼" X 4 3/4" presented on a 12 3/4" X 16 3/4" cream colored heavy stock in turn mounted to a 16" X 20" pale blue mat board. Very good. Bit of slight soiling. The cream colored stock bears glossy photographs on the upper left takeoff and lower right landing corners. At lower left is a circular flute-edged NASA gold foil seal and the space-flown flag is mounted at upper right -- consisting of the State Seal of Illinois with the word "ILLINOIS" below against a white background. The printed text cited above appears immediately below this flag and the crew patch below this text. JOHN YOUNG 1930-2018 signs boldly in black ink to the left of the patch while ROBERT L. CRIPPEN born 1937 signs to the right. The Columbia STS-1 flight was called by NASA "The boldest test flight in history." It was the first orbital flight of the Space Shuttle program lasting 54½ hours and orbiting the Earth 37 times; commanded by John Young and piloted by Robert Crippen it was the first to use solid-fuel rockets in a U.S. manned launch. These rare relics were presented to Illinois' then-senator ADLAI E. STEVENSON III 1930-2021 who was instrumental in guiding U.S. space policy. unknown

This east coast watercolorist and children's book artist illustrated and often also wrote a wide array of children's books from the 1930s into the 1960s -- including "Wilderness Pet" "Wiggly and Giggly the Little Twin Bears" "Whitetail: King of the Forest" "The Three Puppies" "The Small One" "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg" "The Bluebird" "The Night Before Christmas" "The Enchantment of Santa Claus" "The Christ Child" "Pussy Cat Talks to Her Kittens" "Polly Parrot" "Piccolino" "Is There a Santa Claus" as well as some "Dick and Jane Basic Readers." Offered here is the near-complete original illustration art for Smock's 1937 children's book "Jocko" written by Dorothy Winchell and published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago. Represented here is almost the entire book from front cover art through closing "The End" image -- lacking only 3-4 pages front board graphic frontispiece pages 21 and 31. Most are in the form of ca. 10" X 15" heavy stock art boards most with typeset text blocks pagination and other typeset elements stripped in. All are beautifully inked in black and shaded in pale blue. There is a smaller form full-color title page and half-title page and sixth text page these with the text portions entirely hand lettered. Very good. Stripped-in text blocks are usually slightly discolored from the rubber cement with which they were affixed; occasional light soiling and bit of occasional edgewear. Many original tissue overlays are present and these are generally heavily chipped and sometimes partial given their delicate nature though many contain pencilled coloring instructions etc. Four drawings are present in oversize form two 22" X 15" two 15" X 18½". Overall quite attractive and quite displayable. Jocko the monkey is a fictional character seen in 19th century texts such as the 1875 short story "Jocko the Monkey" by Fanny P. Seaverns. The Steiff company issued a monkey stuffed animal named Jocko in the late 19th century and various other Jocko the Monkey products have appeared over the years from cookie jars to posters. There were a series of silent short films about Jocko in the 1920s etc. -- all interesting predecessors to Hans and Margret Rey's "Curious George" which debuted in France in 1939. "Jocko" is the charming tale of "a bright little monkey" named Jocko and his owner an organ grinder named Rollo. Through no fault of his own Jocko gets lost and causes accidents and chaos all about him. He ends up the center of attention at a circus parade. Jocko is asked to join but luckily Rollo finds him at the last moment and they are happily reunited. A delightful collection from the height of this illustrator's fame. It's most unusual to find the nearly complete artwork from an entire book of this period. unknown

1944 typed letter to a college student at Cambridge declining to speak to the Cambridge Literary Club
Very Good. Dated Novemberr 23 1944 on Peace News letterhead Murry writes: Dear Miss Cope I am sorry but in these days it is a physical impossibility for me to make a journey to Cambridge without an inordinate expenditure of time. In more spacious days with plenty of petrol it was comparatively easy for me to pick up a train at Thetford which is 10 miles away. I can't do it now. That makes it an immensely round-about journey for which at the moment I have neither the time nor energy. Yours sincerely J. Middleton Murray. . Very good some light wrinkling and creasing. Both this letter and T. S. Eliot's which we have cataloged recently both employ not just the 'Oxford two spaces' after periods but seem to add a third space. We suggest this to be the subject of someone's dissertation: 'The Development of the "Oxford Three-Space" Among English Literary Personages of the 1930s and 1940s.'. unknown
