NELSON, Horatio (1758-1805)
Autograph Letter Signed
This most renowned of British naval heroes is almost as famous for his scandalous open affair with one of the most famous and beautiful women in England the married Emma Hamilton despite having lost most of his teeth the use of his right eye and his right arm in various military successes; his nautical victories against the French made him Napoleon's nemesis; killed aboard his ship "Victory" in the battle of Trafalgar. ALS 1p 7" X 8¼" Burnham 1793 February 2. Addressed to "Gentlemen." Near fine. A boldly penned and handsome example of Nelson's scarce right-handed penmanship four years prior to losing his right arm in a July 1797 battle and having to learn to write left handed. Rather cryptic financial content reading in full: "I am glad to hear You did not bring our trust money into the Lands as they had risen so very much. I shall be in Town on tuesday Evening & shall probably see Mr. Creed on Wednesday therefore please to let the money Remain in your hands 'till you hear farther from my Brother or myself. I am Your Very Humble Servant." Page & Creed were Nelson's bankers so the reference to Mr. Creed almost certainly refers to that firm. This choice and scarce letter has been handsomely displayed under a pale green matte with gold filigree alongside a stunning 6½" X 8¼" hand-colored steel engraved portrait of "Horatio Viscount Nelson" engraved by W. Finden and "From the original of Hoppner in / His Majesty's Collection." This early 19th century portrait is in fine condition and bears a large incredibly ornate hand-colored decorative border; it depicts Nelson almost full-length in full military regalia with his empty right sleeve pinned to his chest. This pair is framed under glass in a 1" contemporary walnut frame overall dimensions 21" X 15". A superb presentation -- Nelson in his most desirable that is right-handed form. unknown

BROCK, Emma L (1886-1974)
Original Book Illustration Art
This noted Montana-born children's book author/illustrator is remembered for "The Runaway Sardine" her first book 1929 and her popular "Kristie" series as well as many other illustrated titles: "To Market! To Market!" 1930 "Till Potatoes Grow on Trees" 1938 "Too Fast for John" 1940 "The Topsy-Turvy Family" 1943 "The Greedy Goat" 1944 "Drusilla" 1963 and others. Offered here is the near-complete original ink-and-watercolor artwork for an early title illustrated by Brock: Louise F. Encking's translation of E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic "The Nutcracker and the Mouse=King" published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago in 1930 when Brock was just starting out and hungry for work. Consists of 25 heavy onion skin leaves each two sheets either stapled or tipped together at top approximately 11½" X 14½" 14 containing a large single black ink line drawings six signed by Brock at lower margin and the remainder mostly containing two small drawings per sheet. All 25 have an overlay sheet on top of the ink drawings each bearing hand colored elements. Below each ink drawing Brock pens a caption which often differs from that which appears in the published book. Very good overall. Minor occasional soiling most about edges and edgewear. Bold and handsome illustrations for almost the entire book some with pencilled editor's notes in the margins including one or two illustrations omitted from the published book. Front cover art is absent present only in the form of an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white photograph used for production purposes. The simple rear dust jacket art is present on a 12½" X 16½" heavy card stock board as well along with an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white production photograph of same. A fabulous and quite scarce archive that shows the creative process at work. unknown

(FLAG -- SPACE-FLOWN -- Space Shuttle "Columbia")
This flag and crew patch were flown aboard the Space Shuttle "Columbia" STS-1 / April 12-14 1981 / Presented to / Adlai Stevenson / In recognition of the significant contributions you made to the success of this mission
Original space-flown flag 5½" X 4¼" and cloth patch 4¼" X 4 3/4" presented on a 12 3/4" X 16 3/4" cream colored heavy stock in turn mounted to a 16" X 20" pale blue mat board. Very good. Bit of slight soiling. The cream colored stock bears glossy photographs on the upper left takeoff and lower right landing corners. At lower left is a circular flute-edged NASA gold foil seal and the space-flown flag is mounted at upper right -- consisting of the State Seal of Illinois with the word "ILLINOIS" below against a white background. The printed text cited above appears immediately below this flag and the crew patch below this text. JOHN YOUNG 1930-2018 signs boldly in black ink to the left of the patch while ROBERT L. CRIPPEN born 1937 signs to the right. The Columbia STS-1 flight was called by NASA "The boldest test flight in history." It was the first orbital flight of the Space Shuttle program lasting 54½ hours and orbiting the Earth 37 times; commanded by John Young and piloted by Robert Crippen it was the first to use solid-fuel rockets in a U.S. manned launch. These rare relics were presented to Illinois' then-senator ADLAI E. STEVENSON III 1930-2021 who was instrumental in guiding U.S. space policy. unknown

SMOCK, Nell Stolp (1896-?)
Original Book Illustration Art
This east coast watercolorist and children's book artist illustrated and often also wrote a wide array of children's books from the 1930s into the 1960s -- including "Wilderness Pet" "Wiggly and Giggly the Little Twin Bears" "Whitetail: King of the Forest" "The Three Puppies" "The Small One" "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg" "The Bluebird" "The Night Before Christmas" "The Enchantment of Santa Claus" "The Christ Child" "Pussy Cat Talks to Her Kittens" "Polly Parrot" "Piccolino" "Is There a Santa Claus" as well as some "Dick and Jane Basic Readers." Offered here is the near-complete original illustration art for Smock's 1937 children's book "Jocko" written by Dorothy Winchell and published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago. Represented here is almost the entire book from front cover art through closing "The End" image -- lacking only 3-4 pages front board graphic frontispiece pages 21 and 31. Most are in the form of ca. 10" X 15" heavy stock art boards most with typeset text blocks pagination and other typeset elements stripped in. All are beautifully inked in black and shaded in pale blue. There is a smaller form full-color title page and half-title page and sixth text page these with the text portions entirely hand lettered. Very good. Stripped-in text blocks are usually slightly discolored from the rubber cement with which they were affixed; occasional light soiling and bit of occasional edgewear. Many original tissue overlays are present and these are generally heavily chipped and sometimes partial given their delicate nature though many contain pencilled coloring instructions etc. Four drawings are present in oversize form two 22" X 15" two 15" X 18½". Overall quite attractive and quite displayable. Jocko the monkey is a fictional character seen in 19th century texts such as the 1875 short story "Jocko the Monkey" by Fanny P. Seaverns. The Steiff company issued a monkey stuffed animal named Jocko in the late 19th century and various other Jocko the Monkey products have appeared over the years from cookie jars to posters. There were a series of silent short films about Jocko in the 1920s etc. -- all interesting predecessors to Hans and Margret Rey's "Curious George" which debuted in France in 1939. "Jocko" is the charming tale of "a bright little monkey" named Jocko and his owner an organ grinder named Rollo. Through no fault of his own Jocko gets lost and causes accidents and chaos all about him. He ends up the center of attention at a circus parade. Jocko is asked to join but luckily Rollo finds him at the last moment and they are happily reunited. A delightful collection from the height of this illustrator's fame. It's most unusual to find the nearly complete artwork from an entire book of this period. unknown

(Literary autographs) J Middleton Murry
1944 typed letter to a college student at Cambridge declining to speak to the Cambridge Literary Club
Very Good. Dated Novemberr 23 1944 on Peace News letterhead Murry writes: Dear Miss Cope I am sorry but in these days it is a physical impossibility for me to make a journey to Cambridge without an inordinate expenditure of time. In more spacious days with plenty of petrol it was comparatively easy for me to pick up a train at Thetford which is 10 miles away. I can't do it now. That makes it an immensely round-about journey for which at the moment I have neither the time nor energy. Yours sincerely J. Middleton Murray. . Very good some light wrinkling and creasing. Both this letter and T. S. Eliot's which we have cataloged recently both employ not just the 'Oxford two spaces' after periods but seem to add a third space. We suggest this to be the subject of someone's dissertation: 'The Development of the "Oxford Three-Space" Among English Literary Personages of the 1930s and 1940s.'. unknown

Autograph Letter Signed
This popular extraordinarily prolific British writer penned nearly one hundred novels such as "Richelieu" 1829 "The Gypsy" 1835 as well as plays poetry and historical writings such as "The Life and Times of Louis XIV" 1838 exceeding the voluminous output of his mentor Sir Walter Scott; later he turned to diplomacy serving as a British consul in America and vice-consul at Venice. ALS 2pp inlaid 4¼" X 6 3/4" Norfolk VA 1853 May 5. Addressed to M.M. Ballou at Gleason Pictorial in Boston 1820-95 Boston publisher novelist travel writer first editor of Boston Daily Globe. Near fine. "Please excuse my seeming negligence in not having sooner answered your note. When it arrived I was absent from home wandering about for a few days and the letter was mislaid It is thus only today that I have seen it and I hasten to apologize for acknowledging it at an earlier period thinking that in the mean time you have not thought very hardly of Your faithful Servant." Boldly attractively penned in brown ink. So profuse is James's apology though that he fails to mention the object of Ballou's note! Amusingly the very next year Ballou's illustrated pictorial founded 1851 passed along this unflattering tidbit from a London magazine: "The American papers report the particulars of a fire in the house of Mr. G.P.R. James whereby one storey was consumed. What a pity it didn't burn many more! unknown

HAMMOND, C Herrick (1882-1969)
Typed Letter Signed
This American supervised numerous memorable structures as Illinois state architect; he designed many Art Deco and Arts & Crafts style buildings in Chicago and in 1933 joined forces with the Burnham Brothers to create Burnham and Hammond. TLS 1p 7¼" X 9½" Washington DC 1929 August 1. Addressed to Waldemer Kaempffert at the Rosenwald Industrial Museum of Chicago 1877-1956 long-time "New York Times" science editor and director of Chicago's Rosenwald Museum which became the renowned Museum of Science and Industry. Very good. Small staple hole at upper left; large grease-pencilled recipient's docket at upper right. On "The American Institute of Architects" letterhead which lists Hammond as president Hammond notes "I wish to assure you that the members of the Institute will be glad to cooperate in any way possible to make the Industrial Museum a success. No doubt the local architects here can be of assistance and I shall be glad to arrange a meeting with you and some of the leaders of the profession if that is your desire." Interesting: Some sources state that the name of Kaempffert's museum was changed to what it's known as today the Museum of Science and Industry in 1928 but here in 1929 apparently Kaempffert is still using the original name. At this time he was also casting about for a museum building so perhaps was approaching Hammond for assistance. It wasn't until the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition that it opened in the 1893 Columbian Exposition "Palace of Fine Arts" building. Bold handsome full signature. Accompanied by a second letter a TLS from Hammond's executive secretary EDWARD C. KEMPER executive director 1914-48 1p 8½" X 11" Washington DC 1929 July 29. Addressed to Waldemar Kaempffert. Very good. Staple hole at upper left. On "The American Institute of Architects" letterhead Kemper thanks Kaempffert for literature on his museum and notes he will forward same to Hammond. "Mr. Hammond has given liberally of his time for many years to public service and to Chicago civic affairs. we felt that the subject of your letter should receive his personal attention." Quite interesting pair. unknown

Charles E Shepherd of J Pearson & Co [John Pearson], Rare Books and Autographs, 5 Pall Mall Place, London] [Reed; Riviere]:
J. Pearson & Co. Pall Mall booksellers. Autograph Letter Signed to 'Mr. Reed' regarding autograph letters by Sir Philip Sidney and 'his very famous sister' asbestos cases by the binders Riviere and a 'Breeches' bible.
On letterhead of J. Pearson & Co. Rare Books and Autographs 5 Pall Mall Place London. 'Telegraph & Cable Address Parabola London.' 20 May 1903. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. Good on lightly-aged paper. In something of a hard sell he begins by stating that 'the "Sir Philip Sidney" letter of which I showed you a facsimile the other day . seems to me peculiarly suitable for your collection'. In support of the letter's 'exceptional rarity' he cites 'a letter of Thorpe's the expert of autographs of his day dated 1839 accompanying the autograph & giving its pedigree in which he says "I never saw a letter of Sidney's for sale except the present"' adding that 'no other autograph of his has occurred since'. With the letter is one of 'his very famous sister' Mary 'and also a very fine document signed by his father Sir Henry Sidney whose autograph I have not before seen'. He considers it 'most desirable' to keep the three items together 'and bind them with their portraits into a volume which I venture to say would be not only unique but of almost unequalled interest'. Our catalogue price of the collection is £350 and compared with the Ben Jonson letter sold at Sotheby's the other day for £320 it must be cheap'. He harps on about scarcity and prices adding 'The price I mention is what they are marked for catalogue The best I could do for you is £300'. He offers to post the items 'or could you come in either tomorrow or Friday before 1 oclock'. In a postscript signed 'CES' he states that the binders Riviere's consider 'the cases on the Bunyans . fireproof being lined with asbestos. An American Agent who tells us he has seen them tested is having all his valuable books put into cases.' If Reed does visit the firm's premises Shepherd can show him 'a beautiful perfect copy of the first "Breeces" Bible printed in England in 1876. There was no copy in the "Caxton" Bible Exhibition 1877 and Lowndes could never have seen a perfect copy as his collation is wrong.' On letterhead of J. Pearson & Co., Rare Books and Autographs, 5 Pall Mall Place, London. ('Telegraph & Cable Address, Parabola, unknown

Two volumes bound in original blue cloth with spine titles in gilt. Moderate wear to the bindings. The bindings have some chips or abrasions in the cloth which seem to have been touched up with blue paint or coloring. This is more evident at the top edge of front cover on Volume II as well as on the side of its spine. Endpapers foxed. Text is toned but generally clean. INSCRIBED by the author on the front flyleaf of Volume I "To S. A. Ashe / with the author's esteem / Landon C. Bell / May 20 1929." After the War he served in the North Carolina legislature and was a noted historian author and defender of the Confederacy. There is also a signed typed letter laid in loosely from Drewry McKee Smith to Captain Sam Ashe dated 1929. This is actually a copy of a letter to someone else that the sender signed and sent to Captain Ashe. Includes the original stamped envelope which is on browned paper.
