Louis-Ferdinand Céline begins his letter in the grip of doubts and insults: ""It's a very ugly shot what to try I can not avoid myself nowhere I have complaints of counterfeiting That's all all these people are basically afraid they'll never admit it. Then in postscript he thinks that he may have found a publisher ""very possibly"" a possible Publisher Valby and that he will pass through a Parisian friend for the contact ""I write about it to my good friend Dr. Becart"" and recommend to his correspondent to also write to him. Amusing letter in which Gustave Flaubert whose literary renown is well established offers his support to his friend Léon Cladel who is struggling to have one of his works published. The ""master"" - this is how Léon Cladel addresses his colleague - begins this letter with enthusiasm: ""I started your book yesterday at 11 o'clock; it was finished this morning at 9!"" The ""book"" in question is L'Homme de la Croix-aux-Bufs which Flaubert had agreed to re-read for his friend on April 30; he had indeed requested the manuscript deposited with the publisher Georges Charpentier: ""Cladel wrote to me to say that he wished me to read pardon the subjunctive the novel in sheets which is with you. So send it to me or bring it to me."" Letter of May 3 1877. Léon Cladel very close to Gustave Flaubert seems to have shared with him the fears of the publisher Édouard Dentu regarding the publication of his work: ""And first of all Dentu must be mad to be afraid to publish it."" As a seasoned veteran of the ruthless world of publishing Flaubert positions himself as a professional and declares: ""Nothing in it is reprehensible either politically or morally. What he told you is a pretext"" This question of moral reprehension echoes the famous trial brought against the author of Madame Bovary. Like an enthusiastic literary critic Flaubert compliments his colleague: ""I find your book to be a real book. It is very well done very careful very masculine. & I know what I'm talking about my good man."" As a scrupulous reader he nevertheless allows himself a few remarks on Cladel's manuscript ""I have two or three small criticisms to make trivial matters - or rather advice to submit to you."" before reconsidering: ""Sometimes there are pretensions to archaism and naivety. It is an excess of good."" Flaubert's attitude here is almost paternal and in any case benevolent: aware of his friend's abilities he wishes to encourage him and see the publication of his work succeed: ""But once again be content & sleep soundly - or rather don't sleep - and often create similar works."" The benevolent writer also mentions in this letter another publisher Georges Charpentier: ""As for Charpentier to whom I will return your sheets on Friday - the day when I dine at his house I am going to give him a vigorous talking-to & in all conscience without exaggeration & without lies."" Charpentier who has been publishing Flaubert since 1874 has become a close friend of the writer with whom he maintains a rich correspondence. In this month of May 1877 he has just published Trois contes which was for Cladel the occasion for a moving celebration of his master in Letters: ""Where the devil did you get that gleaming brush with which you paint your canvases the small ones like the large ones and that sobriety that certain Latins would envy you To be at once Chateaubriand and Stendhal and moreover Flaubert."" This admiration is reciprocal and Flaubert feels for this ""true artist"" an unfeigned esteem: ""The ending is simply sublime! - & of the greatest effect."" He will reiterate a few weeks later his compliments: ""It is worked chiseled delved into. Observation in your case takes nothing away from poetry; on the contrary it brings it out."" Indeed Cladel will establish himself as the true heir to the Flaubertian style much more so than Zola who will precisely reproach him for ""working his prose relentlessly"" and ""striving to render perfect each sentence he writes."" Per Wikipedia Charles Wakefield Cadman 1881 - 1946 Was An American Composer. For 40 Years He Worked Closely With Nelle Richmond Eberhart Who Wrote Most Of The Texts To His Songs Including Four American Indian Songs. She Also Wrote The Librettos For His Five Operas Two Of Which Were Based On Indian Themes. He Composed In A Wide Variety Of Genres. He Was Greatly Influenced By American Indian Music Which He Had Been Studying Especially Through The Work Of Ethnologists Alice Fletcher And Francis La Flesche. Fletcher And La Flesche Had Studied The Omaha Tribe And Recorded Their Music And Stories. Having Published Several Articles On American Indian Music Cadman Became Regarded As One Of The Foremost Experts On The Subject. In 1908 He Began Touring To Present Lectures Known As The "Indian Talk" Or "Indian Music Tour" Accompanied By The Performance Of Native American Music And His Own Compositions. Tsianina Redfeather Muscogee / Cherokee Billed As "Princess Redfeather" Performed As A Singer On Some Of His Tours. Her Signature Song Was Cadman's "From The Land Of The Sky-Blue Water". Another Such Song Was "At Dawning" Which Became Widely Known In The 1920S. Cadman Toured Both The Us And Europe For 25 Years To Present This Lecture. Cadman Drew From Omaha And Iroquois Songs For His Four American Indian Songs Op. 45 Which Became His First Commercial Success In 1909. This Was Aided By Performances Of These Songs By Noted Soprano Lillian Nordica Who Was On A Concert Tour. In The Summer Of 1909 He Went To Nebraska To Study The Music And Traditional Instruments Of The Omaha And Winnebago Tribes. He Lived With The People On Their Reservations Learning To Play Their Instruments. During His Trip To The West He Met Francis La Flesche An Omaha Ethnologist Who Was Working With The Smithsonian Institution On Studies Of The Omaha And Osage Peoples. Cadman Assisted Him In Making Recordings On Wax Cylinders Of Traditional Songs. These Works Are Now Held By The Library Of Congress And Some 60 Songs Are Available Online. Cadman Drew From La Flesche's Recordings And He Was Also Interested In His Stories Collected From These Peoples. They Began Work That Year On An Opera; Cadman Had Already Started To Pull Melodies From Three Printed Collections Of Omaha And Pawnee Music Published By Ethnologist Alice Cunningham Fletcher Who Also Was With The Smithsonian. The Songs Were Transcribed Or Harmonized By Others. Cadman And Eberhart Worked Closely With La Flesche By Mail And He Continued To Provide Cadman With Omaha Melodies For The Opera. They Were Not Permitted To Use Melodies Which La Flesche Had Collected For An As Yet Unpublished Report For The Smithsonian. Together With Librettist Nelle Richmond Eberhart Cadman And La Flesche Worked Together For About Three More Years To Create An Opera Based On Omaha Stories And Music. Cadman Made Occasional Indian Music Tours To Raise Money For The Project. He Moved To Denver In 1911. Cadman Completed The Music For Da O Ma 1912 And Sought A Venue For It But It Was Never Produced Or Published. It Was Rejected By The Boston Opera Company The White-Smith Music Publishing Company Which Had Published Numerous Songs By Cadman; And The Metropolitan Opera. In The Course Of Their Work The Team Had Changed The Opera From An Omaha To Sioux Lakota/Dakota Setting. A small group of autograph and typed letters signed by or relating to Walter de la Mare all but 2 addressed to Miss Vivien Barton some time with James P. Pinker London Literary Agents. All with usual folds; in good condition.
The first a T.L.S. "W.J. de la Mare" Hill House Taplow Buckinghamshire 4th. Oct. 1939. He writes that he is "indeed sorry you have felt compelled to give up your work with Mr. Pinker.you have always been so kind to me and I shall hate to think of your not being there. I should of course be interested to hear what the actual difficulties were but that no doubt is a personal thing.". The second letter is dated Oct. 31 1939 also signed "W.J. de la Mare" typed with autograph correction and addition. He writes that he hopes her application to work at the Admiralty will be successful and adds "I am glad you have given me such scope in that 'wholly imciompetent'.". The third T.L.S. dated May the 17th & signed "W.J.dlm" he writes regarding a cheque he has received from Albert Bonnier "in respect to the English Continental Zephyr of Miss M." and with autograph postscript "I hope you havn't been 'Casting any Clouts' - these Winds!". Together with 3 A.L's S from his son Richard to Miss Barton In all 4-sides 8vo. Much Haddam Hall Hertfordshire 20th July 1956 4 Sept. 1957 & 10 April 1959. 1930-1940s. Two concertina-bound autograph books. <br> <br>Fan-shaped concertina-bound autograph book 13 x 20cm widest point 30 thick cream leaves with approx 160 manuscript autographs gilt-flecked endpapers gold-patterned brocade cover with a linen label all edges gilt enclosed in a linen fan-shaped sleeve with toggle closures and paper label binder's stamp to the inside cover; the linen worn and faded and the album split at two openings but in very good condition. <br> <br>Small concertina-bound autograph book 12 x 9cm approx 25 thick paper leaves 5 red temple stamps and 4 pencilled autographs sable silk-covered boards chipped paper label in very good condition. Two autograph books dating from 1933-1940 which belonged to the Australian Japan expert author and broadcaster George Caiger 1903-1991. In 1930 after teaching in England and Australia Caiger moved to Japan where he taught English at Musashi Koto Gakko a private school in Tokyo and later also lectured at the Peers' School in Tokyo. Caiger wrote numerous essays and books on Japan and developed friendships with some leading figures in Japanese society and politics. He returned to Australia in 1940 and later became an intelligence officer and translator for the Australian military during World War II before joining the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. <br> <br>His beautiful fan-shaped Japanese autograph book contains a collection of signatures messages and some ink sketches. The earliest of these date to 1933-1934 and include farewell messages from friends written in May 1934 when Caiger and his wife Margaret returned for a short period to Australia. Others date from 1939-1940 and include farewells from the time when the Caigers left Japan for good in late 1939. An interesting set of signatures on the last page includes the annotation "SS Atuta Maru 00.01am 1st January 1940 Arafura Sea" clearly written as passengers celebrated a rather uncertain New Year on their voyage home from Japan. There are also two charming ink sketches - one of Mt. Fuji - drawn by a friend named Y. Nakatsuka shortly before the Caigers' departure from Japan. Autographs include those of Australian diplomat H. R. Sawbridge and Christian missionary Clarence Gillett who later worked with Japanese internees in the US during WWII. <br> <br>A second smaller concertina-folded autograph book is mostly blank but contains a few pencilled-in names on the first page and some souvenir ink-stamps including one labelled "Daibustu Nara 1.1.33" in the rear. <br> <br>Fascinating autograph realia from the Imperial Japanese period collected by a well-known Australian broadcaster. . hardcover
