Together with AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Irving on his stationery to Neilson laid in in which Irving says that Neilson's photos will also be used on the UK edition and jokes that another photo to be used for the American and Canadian editions is more flattering because it doesn't show Irving's face. Closes with mention of a nearby school in Vermont. Neilson was a preeminent motorcycle journalist and editor of Cycle Magazine. WELLES, Gideon (1802-78)
Autograph Document Signed
This Connecticut legislator and civil servant served as Secretary of the Navy under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson 1861-69. ADS 1p 8" X 9½" n.p. 1848 August. Very good. Attractive pale blue lined sheet. Welles at this time chief of the bureau of provisions and clothing for the U.S. Navy requests a $150 advance for costs incurred in traveling from Washington to Auburn New York to attend the case of United States vs. L. Caldwell as well as reimbursement for two past trips. Signed with his usual cramped "GWelles." This item is accompanied by an exceptional and scarce 8" X 10" glossy photograph a full-length portrait possibly from a Mathew Brady negative made circa 1950 by pioneering photography historian FREDERICK HILL MESERVE 1865-1962 "America's first great photograph collector" who assigned numbers to Lincoln photographs "Meserve numbers" that are still used today. This striking image was quite likely made from the original glass plate negative as was Meserve's habit. It is identified on the verso in pencil in Meserve's distinctive hand: "Gideon Welles / The Meserve Collection." A handsome document and a highly desireable accompanying image. unknown

This physician and educator served as dean and chancellor of Stanford University's School of Medicine then served as Secretary of the interior under Hoover 1929-32 after which he became third president of Stanford 1933-43. TNS 1p 7" X 10½" Secretary of the Interior letterhead Washington DC 1932 March 29. Addressed to Charles T. White a Lincoln scholar and writer. Very good. Small and minor tape stain. Transmits "my recent address on LINCOLN." Accompanied by a TDS mimeographed copy of typed double-spaced address 5pp rectos only 8" X 10½". Very good. Mildly age toned with staple hole at upper left. Headlined "Speech by Dr. Ray Lyman Wilbur Secretary of the Interior at the first annual Lincoln Day Dinner of the National Capital Republican Club Friday evening February 12 1932 Willard Hotel Washington D.C." Wilbur signs in full large and bold in blue ink across the top. A rousing patriotic talk near the end of Hoover's term in office with the Depression bearing down closing with: "We are on our way to repeat the election of 1864. People then talked and talked and then began to think and think and voted that Abraham Lincoln should stay in office just as they will do for Herbert Hoover." Could he have been more wrong Hoover of course lost to FDR in a landslide the following November 8. Quite unusual. unknown

Amsterdam 1958 13.90 x 8.90 cm une carte postale Autograph signed postcard addressed to Jean Schuster Amsterdam 1958 13.9 x 8.9 cm a postcard Handwritten postcard signed by André Breton addressed to Jean Schuster written in blue ballpoint pen on the back of a postcard reproducing a black and white photography of a Melanesian mask preserved at the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam and which André Breton designates under the highly significant qualifier friend responsible for showing his affection to Jean Schuster. This grid pattern of canals and the tulip tiling leaves us in great indecision. . This country is decidedly very beautiful. His wife Elisa Breton added a few lines of a Surrealist tone following the main text: Elisa in Amsterdam comes from a gingerbread tin and a potential twisting from antiquarians. Jean Schuster 1929-1995 joined the Surrealist group in 1947. Close to Benjamin Péret and André Breton he will become Breton's executor. unknown
