‎Boukreev Anatoli‎

‎Typescript of Opening Remarks for a Session on Alpine Voyeurism at the Banff Mountain Book Festival November 8 1997‎

‎1997. Soft cover. Very Good. Four-page photocopied typescript of Boukreev's remarks on 8.5 x 11 paper stapled at one corner and folded once horizontally. Boukreev--whose book The Climb describes the events of the tragic 1996 Everest climbing season from his perspective as a guide for Mountain Madness--here questions the effect of media reporting on the climbing community. He concludes "If mountaineers are to play this media game we must learn very quickly how it affects our concentration how it takes our energy and how it feeds our ambition to succeed. This is a personal responsibility and every sportsman must make choices about these questions." Less than two months after writing these words Boukreev died in an avalanche on Annapurna. paperback books‎

‎Log of the President's Inspection Cruise through the West Indies on Board the U.S.S. Tuscaloosa. 3-14 December 1940‎

‎N.p. Washington D.C. 1941. Illustrated with map five photographs. vii 25 pp. Title planographed from printed copy. Text planographed from typescript. 1 vols. 4to. Green wrappers; printed in black; stapled. Fine. Blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated with map five photographs. vii 25 pp. Title planographed from printed copy. Text planographed from typescript. 1 vols. 4to. Rare FDR Log: A Radio Message from Ernest Hemingway. A log of FDR's inspection cruise of naval bases in the British West Indies. The log is a detailed narrative of the President's activities and the progress of the ship he traveled on the Tuscaloosa. As was customary on these cruises Roosevelt combined sport fishing with his official duties. Opposite page 15 a fine portrait of FDR seated with rod in hand is entitled "The President trolls though Mona Passage." The text for 10 December reads: "At 1000 while proceeding through the Mona Passage sped was reduced to 7 knots while the President trolled from the stern. The water here was over 1500 feet deep and the president's decision to try his luck was based mainly on the contents of a radio message which he had received from Ernest Hemingway recommending the locality as one in which many big fish had been caught and suggesting the use of a feathered hook baited with a piece of pork rind. The President trolled for an hour or more without even a strike and so fishing operations were discontinued at 1130 following which speed was increased to 25 knots." In addition to highlights of official business the log records the fishing activities throughout the cruise Harry Hopkins hooks a 36 inch Grouper but as it was landed by Admiral Mcintire it was "not a legitimate catch for determining fishing honors two members of the party having handled the rod." This log identifies Maj. Gen. Edwin L Watson FDR's military aide as "Pa" and so his authorship of an earlier log can now be assigned. We have never seen this log. The only other copy recorded is in the Library of Congress. Halter p. 192 records only Library of Congress copy unknown books‎

‎A Trip to the Yellowstone National Park in July August and September 1875. From the Journal of General W. E. Strong‎

‎Washington 1876. First edition. 2 folding maps 7 line drawings and 7 tipped-in albumen photograph portraits with fine manuscript captions. 143 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Original three quarter red morocco titled in gilt on upper cover "The/ Yellowstone/ and/ The Great Geysers/Strong/1875." Ownership signature of Rhoby McM Gillespie Chicago wife of the photographer on title. Spine neatly rebacked. First edition. 2 folding maps 7 line drawings and 7 tipped-in albumen photograph portraits with fine manuscript captions. 143 pp. 1 vols. 4to. In the Yellowstone: "Such fishing I have never had before" One of the earliest descriptions of Yellowstone being the account of a hunting expedition to the north-western territories undertaken by the author and six officers plus a contingent of enlisted men including US Secretary of War Gen. Wm. W. Belknap and US Inspector General R. B. Marcy who fell ill and nearly perished on the trip as well as Gen. James W. Forsyth Lt. G. C. Doane Gen N. B. Sweitzer and Col. George L. Gillespie whose photographic portraits illustrate the book. The party traveled some 5000 miles by rail stage steamer and horseback in 53 days seeking elk deer buffalo and other game as well as wild fowl; due to the season of the year game was not as plentiful as hoped but the abundance of trout exceeded all expectations and almost 500 large ones were caught see pp. 54-57. Another impediment to hunting were the "hostile Sioux who were constantly lurking around in great numbers;" it was perhaps prophetic that on September 3 1875 they met and were entertained by General George Armstrong Custer of the 7th Cavalry at Fort Lincoln just nine months before the Battle of Little Big Horn. As befitting "one of the most famous sportsmen in the country" Custer and his wife and sister lived in great state on the post surrounded by the General's hunting trophies of which there were many. Circumstances prevented Strong from retaining the head or hide of the huge leader of a buffalo herd which he shot but the event is described in lively detail. Also noteworthy are the author's splendid descriptions of Yellowstone and the surrounding territory. Many accounts of Yellowstone and the Northwest were to follow but this one in its depiction of the country the sport and the individuals who participated in this early adventure is a gem and equally rare. <br/>A FASCINATING AND SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNT OF FRONTIER SPORT AND EXPLORATION IN THE AMERICAN WEST. ‎Women Sports Alaska‎

‎The Lightning Strikers. Winners of the Ladies Indoor Baseball League Trophy Nome Alaska 1914‎

‎Nome: Lomen Brothers 1914. Silver gelatin print 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Fine. Women's baseball evolved alongside men's leagues beginning in the 1860s with many teams and leagues appearing throughout the following decades often playing indoors and often unrecorded in the annals of baseball history. Women's baseball was particularly popular in Minnesota and parts of the Midwest in the early part of the twentieth century. This photograph bears evidence as to the game's migration to Alaska Territory where long winters would have been particularly conducive to an indoor league. This photograph by the Nome Alaska firm Lomen Brothers shows the champion team of the Ladies Indoor Baseball League in Nome. We find no record in contemporary newspapers or anywhere else of the league. The Nome Brothers were a well-known photographic firm who migrated from Minnesota to Alaska at the height of the Nome Gold Rush in 1903. By 1909 at the end of the gold rush the population of Nome declined substantially to 2500 from 20000 just a few years earlier. This photograph shows interesting documentation of Nome post-rush and also of the spread of women's sports through migrant populations. We find one other example in the Fred Henton collection at the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. A fine example. Lomen Brothers unknown books‎

‎Sports Broadcasters' Assocation: New York Chapter‎

‎Proposed Constitution‎

‎New York: SBA 1954. 10 pages. Stencil. Though the Association had begun in 1940 they had only a few carlessly produced constitutions. Here was their plan to create one that would deal with all the issues that had arisen in the post-World War II years. They met in the fall of 1954 at Lake Placid under the leadership of E.R. "Curly" Vadeboncoeur with 44 members. Although New York was of the prime importance in the broadcasting industry it was one of th elast states to establish a broadcast associaton. It now was designed to include televison. Article 4 on membership shows why it was still an all white male organization as it specifies that the term "man"or "men" is used seven times. It also had a close relationship with the Baseball Commissioner during the Happy Chandler era as noted in Article 6--Section E. They decided to change the official name to: "The New York State Broadcasters' Association." From its original 44 members it today covers over 300 sports broadcasters in the state of New York. "This award shall go to the man who . has made an outstanding contribution to the world of sports." Included are four reports of annual meetings between 1954-1957. Prominent were John Jerr Chris Shenkel Mel Allen Lindsay Nelson Hy Turkin and a would-be member who was a guest Howard Cosell but admitted at the Oct 20 1954 meeting. Among guest speakers were Walter O'Malley. This was a period when the sports writers were privy to all the scandals that were kept private. As is evident in the Constitution women had no place in their minds in sports reporting. When the first women sportscasters began to be allowed to broadcast in the 1960's the all male TV crews would often try to refuse working with them. Even in the early 1970's Jeannie Morris was not allowed in Press box to cover the Vikings-Bear game during blizzard conditions the only bathroom available to her was the one used by the fans a quarter of the way around the stadium. ‎Workman Fanny Bullock; Workman William Hunter‎

‎In the Ice World of the Himalaya Among the Peaks and Passes of Ladakh Nubra Suru and Baltistan‎

‎New York: Cassell and Company 1900. First American Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. xvi 204 pp with three colored folding maps and 67 illustrations from photographs. Original green cloth with illustration of the authors on the front board. Minor insect damage to front board spine slightly toned some foxing to endpapers else quite sound and clean. The American husband and wife team were wealthy zealous and energetic explorers who together made many expeditions to the Himalayas. Fanny a suffragist as well as a bit of a publicity hound made sure the world knew of her achievements as a pioneering female climber. Among other achievements she held the women's altitude record for 28 years after her conquest of 23000-ft Pinnacle Peak in 1906. Robinson Wayward Women amusingly describes her as having "practically battered the Karakorams into submission first treading them over with her squat hob-nailed figure and then pinning them down on virgin maps and charts to take home for the various Geographical Societies of England and America to fight over." This is the account of their first Himalayan expedition 1898-99 during which they reached the Karakoram Pass and explored the Biafo Glacier Neate W124. Cassell and Company hardcover books‎
