‎Captivant carnet inedit manuscrit de notes et croquis pris par un voyageur au cours de 7 voyages effectués en France, en Suisse et en Allemagne entre 1833 et 1846. Lauteur, dune grande érudition, nindique pas son nom. Cependant il cite ceux de ses amis et de ses rencontres ainsi que, p. 90, la date de son admission a la retraite: le 15 septembre 1845. Cette information indique quil était fonctionnaire, probablement enseignant ou travaillant pour le Museum dont il site des amis. Rédigé dune fine écriture à lencre brune, le journal comporte au dernier feuillet la liste des voyages effectués dont lauteur anonyme nous livre le récit : 1. Voyage à Offenburg. Mai 1833 ; 2. Souvenirs de Baden. Juin 1833 ; 3. Voyage à Schirenweck et au champ du Feu. Juin 1833 ; 4. Voyage au Kaiserstuhl et à Freyburg. Juillet 1833. 5. Voyage de Strasbourg à Paris par Borentruz, Berne, Lausanne, Genève et Dijon. Du 23 aout 1833 au 21 septembre ; 6. Voyage de Paris à Dieppe, au Havre et à Rouen. Du 18 au 30 septembre 1845 ; 7. Voyage de Paris à Autun et Orléans. Du 1er au 21 septembre 1846. Au fil des pages, notre voyageur livre ses observations et découvertes des villes et contrées quil visite (châteaux, édifices, musées, habitants...) et il documente son journal de précises références en science, en histoire et en littérature. Il sintéresse particulièrement à la géologie ce qui atteste de ses connaissances scientifiques. Dans le récit journalier de ses voyages, lauteur cite les noms de ses hôtes et compagnons ainsi que les moyens de transport utilisés ( voitures à cheval, train, bateaux) et aussi les spectacles auxquels il assiste. Une vingtaine de petits croquis tracés à la plume dans le texte et une carte de la région de Montbéliard illustrent son travail. Extraits : P. 40 : « 26 aout. [Porrentruy, 1833] Dès le matin, je pars avec Monsieur Thurmann visiter le château de montagne que lon appelle le LOricourt. Indépendamment des nombreux faits géologiques que nous y avons observé, jai aussi été frappé de la forme du Mont Terrible au sommet duquel un camp romain. Cette montagne appelée encore le « Jules César » a servi de station à quelque cohorte Romaine, on y voit un puits creusé à ce dessein. Vis à vis est la cime du mont Gresnay qui le domine de 150 mètres ». P. 67 : « Le 8 septembre [1833] à 5h œ du matin, je quittais Lausanne. A 6 heures œ jembarquais sur le bateau à vapeur le Winkelried. Après avoir quitté la rive quun temps froid et pluvieux me prive du plaisir que lon goute en voyageant sur le lac Leman. Il me fallut tout le zèle que jai constamment apporté dans ce voyage pour rester sur le pont et reconnaitre le port et la ville de Morges entouré des murailles et dont lorigine remonte au 13é siècle. La pluie ne cesse de tomber quand nous passons devant Molle que lon dit avoir été bâtie en 1261 ». P. 70 : « 9 septembre [Geneve], Mr Morin, professeur de chimie, me conduit au musée dhistoire naturelle qui est aussi celui des antiquités [suit la description de son contenu et des croquis]. Captivating unpublished manuscript notebook of notes and sketches taken by a traveler during seven trips to France, Switzerland, and Germany between 1833 and 1846. The author, a man of great erudition, does not give his name. However, he mentions the names of his friends and acquaintances and, on p. 90, the date of his retirement: September 15, 1845. This information indicates that he was a civil servant, probably a teacher or someone who worked for the museum where he had friends. Written in fine brown ink, the journal includes a list of trips taken on the last page, which the anonymous author recounts: 1. Trip to Offenburg. May 1833; 2. Memories of Baden. June 1833; 3. Trip to Schirenweck and the Champ du Feu. June 1833; 4. Trip to Kaiserstuhl and Freyburg. July 1833. 5. Trip from Strasbourg to Paris via Borentruz, Bern, Lausanne, Geneva, and Dijon. From August 23, 1833, to September 21; 6. Trip from Paris to Dieppe, Le Havre, and Rouen. From September 18 to 30, 1845; 7. Journey from Paris to Autun and Orléans. September 1 to 21, 1846. Throughout the pages, our traveler shares his observations and discoveries of the cities and regions he visits (castles, buildings, museums, inhabitants, etc.) and documents his journal with precise references to science, history, and literature. He is particularly interested in geology, which attests to his scientific knowledge. In his daily account of his travels, the author mentions the names of his hosts and companions, as well as the means of transport used (horse-drawn carriages, trains, boats, etc.) and the shows he attends. Twenty small pen-and-ink sketches in the text and a map of the Montbéliard region illustrate his work. Excerpts: P. 40: "August 26. [Porrentruy, 1833] Early in the morning, I set off with Monsieur Thurmann to visit the mountain castle known as L'Oricourt. Apart from the many geological features we observed there, I was also struck by the shape of Mont Terrible, at the summit of which stands a Roman camp. This mountain, also known as Jules César, served as a station for a Roman cohort, and a well dug for this purpose can be seen there. Opposite is the summit of Mont Gresnay, which towers 150 meters above it. P. 67: On September 8 [1833] at 5:30 in the morning, I left Lausanne. At 6:30 a.m., I boarded the steamboat Winkelried. After leaving the shore, cold and rainy weather deprived me of the pleasure of traveling on Lake Geneva. It took all the enthusiasm I had brought to this trip to stay on deck and recognize the port and town of Morges, surrounded by walls and dating back to the 13th century. The rain continued to fall as we passed Molle, which is said to have been built in 1261... P. 70: "September 9 [Geneva], Mr. Morin, professor of chemistry, takes me to the natural history museum, which is also the museum of antiquities... [followed by a description of its contents and sketches]. Very fresh document, preserved in its original cardboard case.‎

‎Ce recueil manuscrit à la belle écriture italique très lisible renferme des pièces variées, plus ou moins longues, relatives à Louis XIV et Louis XV, ainsi qu'aux personnages et évènements importants de leurs règnes : "Chanson sur l'air vous m'entendés bien" - il y est question du Comte de Pontchartrain, Tournely, Le Tellier... On s'attaque à Le Tellier, on y raille la constitution du pape Clément : "Ne me faites pas un crime De chanter une chanson Sur la constitution Du pape clementissime..." - "Dialogue entre Louis 14 et St. Pierre poème en vers libres". (ff 7 à 9) "Rimes en 15 sur le commencement du règne de Louis 15", "Scaronomancie ou députation de Scaron à Louis 14 dans les enfers". (ff 13 à 15) - "Poème à son Altesse Royale Mgr le Duc d'Orléans Régent du Royaume" (ff15 à 17) "Lettre des Révérends Pères Capucins au P. Le premier feuillet porte la numérotation « XXII » dont le dernier chiffre a été gratté.Rare recueil de différentes pièces rédigées lors de la mort de Louis XIV en 1715 et qui circulaient sous forme orales, manuscrites et plus rarement imprimées. La BNF contient un manuscrit portant le même titre à la même date, plus fourni qui présente un certain nombre de textes en commun.Reliure frottée aux plats et au dos, importants manques aux coiffes, coins frottés.‎

‎Small oblong folio (ca. 276 x 210 mm). German manuscript on paper (letterpress form). 188 ff. Contemporary brown half cloth over marbled boards with giltstamped red cover label reading "Journal. 12 Monate". Diligently kept naval log of a long China voyage on a Hamburg-based ship undertaken soon after the Second Opium War, at the time of the Tianjin Massacre, during the early years of the rule of the Tongzhi Emperor. The Chinese ports of call range from Hong Kong on the South China Sea and Shanghai on the East China Sea to Tianjin (near Beijing) on the Yellow Sea. - The journal entries begin with the schooner barque Anna weighing anchor in Hamburg on 17 January 1870; they cross the Sunda Strait on 23 April and reach Shanghai on 1 June. After a layover, the course is set for Tamsui, then for Chifoo (Yantai) and Tientsin (Tianjin), and onwards to Hong Kong, Amoy (Xiamen), and Taku, bringing the ship to the island of Penang (George Town) on the Straits of Malacca on 12 March 1872. 14 pages prefixed to the printed form describe how the Anna is taken over at Geestemünde (Bremerhaven) on 20 November 1869, as well as the travel preparations, but also events in the port of Yantai. Apart from precise position readings, weather notes, and other navigational records, the book also contains information in brief regarding disciplinary measures, damage suffered from ice jams, celebrations on board, etc. Until 21 June 1870 the logbook is maintained by the chief helmsman Thomas Brügeman, after which date a different writer takes over. - The Anna (ex Malvina), built and launched in 1859, was a barquentine of 227 register tonnes, sailed by a crew of ten men under captain Carl Eisenmenger, who was also the owner of the ship. - Binding slightly rubbed; paper occasionally browned, but well-preserved altogether.‎

Instruktive Darstellung der Funktionsweise eines Chromometers, die wohl für einen Lexikonartikel oder als Aufsatz für eine technische Zeitschrift gedacht war: "Chromometer, Chromoskop oder Wärmemesser wird ein Instrument genannt, welches die Änderungen in der Wärme oder Temperatur der Luft oder eines andern Fluidums, dem es ausgesetzt, wird, genau anzeigt. Diese Kenntnis der abweichenden Temperatur ist bey mehreren ökonomischen Geschäften höchst wichtig; sie kann auch in einer regelmäßigen Bleich- und Färbeanstalt, wo man nicht auf[s] geradewohl operirt, und immer gleiche Resultate verlangt, nicht enbehrt werden; aber nur durch jenes Instrument wird sie möglich. So wie die Aräometer, so sind auch die Thermometer nach der Eintheilung ihrer Skalen verschieden. Die gebräuchlichsten sind das Reaumürische und Fahrenheit Thermometer, deren Eintheilung hinlänglich bekannt ist [...]". - Verfasser des vorliegenden Manuskripts ist "Fritz v. Meiding[er]" - so die Unterschrift unter dem Text -, wohl ident mit dem Gelehrten, Naturforscher und Erfinder Johann Friedrich Reichsfrhr. von Meidinger (1726-1777).‎

‎1865 : Naissance de Joseph Perreau, dit Jho Pâle, écrivain ...... Joseph Hippolyte Perreau est né à Clamecy le 21 mars 1865. Monté à Paris, il entreprend, à la fin du XIXe siècle, sous le pseudonyme de Jho Pâle, une carrière décrivain. Il sessaye à divers genres littéraires : la poésie avec Les Aubes mortes (1897) ou Chansons pour Madeleine (1900), les descriptions impressionnistes dans Croquis parisiens (1897). Mais son inspiration reste profondément liée à sa région dorigine : À Coups de Gaule (1898) rassemble dix-huit contes imaginés par les membres du Syndicat des gosiers morvandiaux réunis à lhôtel de la Boule carrée, que tous les Clamecycois identifient sans peine à celui de la Boule dor. Les noms des convives : Paterne Petdeveau, Lié Depatte et autre Pantaléon Tapinsec disent, comme leurs récits, sa volonté dimiter Rabelais ........ Autre auteur : Duvernois, Henri (1875-1937). Préfacier .... Livre dédié "aux seuls gaulois, à ceux qui aiment encore les gaudrioles et les propos salés et poivrés de nos pères" ....... Rare et agréable exemplaire malgré de légères rousseurs sur la Couverture ..... ‎Second edition, [2 ads], [36]pp., with printed title-page and half-title, engraved headpiece, the advert leaf includes two editions of Beckford's Vathek and A Description of Fonthill Abbey. Small 4to (235 x 145 mm), 2 works in one, recent half calf to style, marbled boards, spine tooled in gilt. A survey of the principal public and private libraries in England, listing highlights of the collections and concluding with brief accounts of 30 important English book auctions from the 17th century onwards. William Beckford assisted in the compilation of this work, particularly in the description of his own library at Fonthill. The Dialogue in the Shades is a two-part pamphlet of satirical verse is a response to Dibdin's Lincolne Nosegay and the Bibliographical Decameron. The attribution varies from William Beckford to the Clarke brothers. This second edition is issued with an additional half-title, title-page with note from 'Mr. Wynkem' on the verso, and with the addition of The Diary of Roger Payne, a work in the same vein. ‎"Supplica che fà Roma al Re Cattolico per la Morte di Clemente XIV". Anonymous anti-Jesuit eulogy for the deceased Pope. N. p., ca. 1774.‎

‎Folio. Italian manuscript on paper. 1½ pp. In the guise of a supplication by the city of Rome to Spanish King Charles III (1716-88) following the death of Pope Clement XIV in 1774, this poem with 34 verses of 6 lines is a fiercely caustic enumeration of anti-Jesuit tropes and slanders. Among the common accusations levied against the Jesuits was the fabrication of a link between the Society and Robert-François Damiens, who had attempted to assassinate Louis XV in 1757: "Tu sai che nella Francia / Un caro a lor si cangia / In Sicario ed assase, / Perfido disleale, / Il Monarca al cospetto / Del Popol tutto per uprirgli il pecto." In one of the final verses the poem calls for Charles III, who "will extinguish the stains on the forks", to take up his sword "in every street" against those who have insulted "the majesty of the kings and of the church". - The most consequential and controversial decision of Pope Clement XIV was the suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773. This political act led to a surge in propaganda for and against the Jesuits and the Pope. Spain had already expelled the Jesuits in 1767. - Traces of folds and insignificant brownstaining.‎

‎Anecdoten, Auszüge. Northern Germany, ca. 1770-1867.‎

‎4to (172 x 202 mm). German manuscript on paper by various hands. 298 written pp. on 180 ff. (including flyleaves). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. An extensive German commonplace book, continuously expanded for nearly a century by a family of merchants, farmers, and mariners, one of whom sailed to Virginia on the HMS Lion to join the fleet of Admiral Cornwallis, probably in 1779 during the American Revolutionary War. - The first part (comprising some 40 ff.) offers an anthology of maxims, aphorisms, and anecdotes about the Vienna Court Theatre, about Garrick and Hogarth, King George III and Voltaire, etc., apparently mainly compiled in the 18th century, with a few later additions by other hands. The second part, begun by the same writer and considerably expanded by several later owners of the book, contains a vast miscellany of historical and historico-cultural themes. Items include a piece about verbal responses to sneezing, another about wigs and elaborate hairstyles throughout history, about the history of playing cards; and tables for housewives with which to calculate their annual expenses. Later entries focus more strongly on household remedies against illnesses (such as cholera and dropsy) and agricultural advice (how to get rid of weevils, how to increase the fertility of fruit trees). - Occasionally, the notes will provide a more immediate glimpse of the life of the writer: underneath a discussion of how to calculate the deadweight tonnage of a ship of 100 cannons with a crew of 1000 men, an early 19th century owner who signs his name "Bindseil" states that he himself "sailed on an English ship of the 2nd line, blue flag, of 64 cannons, named Lion, under Captain Fox, which was taking us to the English general Cornwallis in Virginia. On this ship were 1375 souls, 4 live oxen, 12 large pigs, the same number of rams, and 4 horses, which are not taken into account by the above calculation, as little as the minimum two anchors are, each of which weighs some 600 pounds and yet is quite indispensable [...]" (transl.). Not infrequently, an entry will cite the source from which it is drawn: newspapers and journals mentioned include the "Hamburgischer Correspondent", "Holzmindisches Wochenblatt", "Hannoverscher Anzeiger" and "Braunschweigische Zeitung", pointing to a Northern German origin. - Occasional light brownstaining; binding somewhat rubbed. A fine survival worthy of detailed study.‎

‎Folio (220 x 355 mm). German manuscript on paper. A sheaf of court documents containing records and correspondence (some as drafts or copies). 30 pp., folio und 4to, thread-stitched in grey wrappers with handwritten cover title as quoted above. Uncommon example of early modern court records relating to a case of sexual assault in the principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (now Thuringia). During the night of Sunday, 14 January 1821, the 19-year-old maidservant Johanna Christiane Pröschold from Piesau was brutally raped at Pfeiffer's inn in Ascherbach (now part of Lichte near Neuhaus am Rennweg) by Friedrich Scherf, Adolph Brödel, Markus Glaser, Christoph and Wilhelm Wächter, as well as Carl Kampf from Lichte. The documents include the records of the statements made by the maid as well as by the perpetrators, signed by the local sheriff Johann Christoph Horn; a certificate of good character for Pröschold's employer, the innkeeper, given by the priest Johann Jakob Korn; the copy of a letter to the Administrative Office in Schwarzburg; and the draft of a report to the general counsel, König, in which it is said that the maid "suffered through this most villainous, shameful behaviour the most horrible maltreatment, indeed insulting to humanity, which in fact endangers her very life". The culprits were sentenced to corporal punishments and prison terms of various severity, spent at the Schwarzburg gaol. - A few leaves loose; a few insignificant edge flaws, but on the whole in excellent state of preservation.‎
