‎Scraped, Stroked, and Bound , Materially Engaged Readings of Medieval Manuscripts‎

‎Hardback, XVI 240 p., 23 b/w ill. 14 colour ill., 156 x 234 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9782503545493. Materially engaged readings of medieval manuscripts that build up such concepts as the philology of smell and touching the past through sensitivity to the handling of books. This collection of essays makes an original contribution to medieval manuscript studies through deep engagement with the material side of book creation. The volume brings together major scholars of medieval manuscripts with leading contemporary book artists. The result is a ground-breaking collection which will be of interest both for its methodological implications and for the insights that the case studies provide. In a sequence of interconnected essays, experts in the field of literature, history, art, and manuscript studies enact readings of medieval manuscripts that incorporate extreme attention to the materiality of the object of their study. While the digital revolution has provided unparalleled visual access to medieval manuscripts, these essays are attentive to what has got left behind-not just the aura of the original, but also the engagement of the other senses, such as the feel of the binding, the heft of the volume, the smell of the parchment, or the sound of the pages. By bringing together experienced medievalist scholars with practicing book artists of today, this volume brings back an artisanal sense of the complete book to an understanding of medieval manuscripts.‎

‎Gothic Manuscripts: 1260-1320. Part One , two volumes. A Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in France.‎

‎hardback, cloth. with dusjackets, 2 volumes., 1130 pages ., 838 b/w ill. 77 colour ill., 230 x 330 mm, Languages: English, A Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in France. ISBN 9781872501956. This book traces the cultural context of book illustration, its production, owners, and makers in the various regions of France in the last third of the thirteenth and beginning of the fourteenth centuries. The period c. 1260-1320 marks the emergence and the flowering of what has come to be known as the ?courtly style? in French painting, whose dynamic vitality is manifest throughout the region we now call France. By the end of this period French art had assimilated a rich variety of regional works and styles. New texts had been introduced to a range of patrons, and patterns to be played out in the following centuries were in place. This book traces the cultural context of book illustration, its production, owners, and makers in the various regions of France in the last third of the thirteenth and beginning of the fourteenth centuries. While the royal, courtly, academic and ecclesiastical patrons were critical to the cultural and artistic production of the capital, books made in provincial centres manifest an independence and originality that can be attributed to fruitful interaction with neighbouring cultures?the linguistic, literary, and artistic traditions of England in the north and west, Navarre, Aragon, the county of Barcelona and the Kingdom of Majorca in the Pyrenean regions, and the Empire along the eastern borders, from the principalities of North Italy and the Alpine regions to Burgundy, Hainaut and Flanders. Ecclesiastical boundaries cut across political divisions, contributing different sets of allegiances that impacted upon book culture in other ways. The Provinces of Reims and Tarantaise included fiefs of Empire, while Narbonne (to 1317) encompassed dioceses in Aragon, and the Provinces of Bordeaux and Tours lay in part in lands held by the English. The religious orders and the universities offered other sets of governing structures and vehicles of influence and reception. Royal and courtly patrons took their place in this period alongside churchmen and women and layfolk from the burgeoning bourgeois class, many of whom are known from ownership notes or inventories. Yet some of the finest books of the period were made for people whose identity remains obscure. Similarly the names of craftsmen?scribes, decorators, illuminators?are often known from their signatures in the books they made or from payments and other records, yet many distinguished works are the products of anonymous creators. These years witnessed an explosition in the range of texts that were deemed worthy of illustraton, extending far beyond the usual liturgical and devotional material to include works of science, medicine, law, philosophy, history and literature in verse and prose, offering a wealth of material for comparative study which is only beginning to be exploited in modern scholarship. This book is organized according to production in regional centres based on stylistic analysis and by comparative tables of the illustration of liturgical and devotional books, and a selection of romances, legal and historical works. Part 1 comprises the Introduction, the Lists of the Producers (scribes, illuminators and decorators) and Patrons whose names are known, followed by a Catalogue of Manuscripts made in the North (Paris and the Province of Sens, Normandy, the Province of Reims). Part 2 contains the Catalogue of Manuscripts made in the East, South-East, South-West, West and Centre, followed by the Comparative Tables and Index of Manuscripts Cited. Alison Stones is Professor of History of Art and Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a membre correspondant etranger of the Societe nationale des antiquaires de France.‎

‎Manuscript Painting in Thirteenth-Century Flanders, Manuscript Painting in Thirteenth-Century Flanders. Bruges, Ghent and the Circle of the Counts‎

‎Hardback , IX 542 p., 280 b/w ill. 19 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm, Languages: English.Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History . ISBN 9781905375677. This book provides an extensive in-depth study of the figural painting produced in Flanders during the 13th century. This is the first comprehensive and in-depth study of the earliest figural painting ever to have been produced in Flanders on a continual basis. Most of the manuscripts are Psalters, but Bibles, a Breviary, a Missal, a Netherlandic life of a saint, and yet other texts occur. Three main categories of illuminator are distinguishable: those working in Bruges, in Ghent, and, at least in part, for the circle of the counts of Flanders. The principal chapters and the catalog segments are organized around their individual contributions. An arrangement in time and place of the total body of work was obtained through a lengthy and rigorous process of comparison of figural, ornamental and writing styles, codicological and textual features. Several distinctive Flemish patterns of Psalter iconography have emerged; these are presented in tabular form with accompanying commentaries. A surprising amount of information about the early owners of the books, mostly well-to-do members of the laity, was yielded in the analysis for the manuscript catalogs.‎

‎Staging the Court of Burgundy.‎

‎Hardback with dusjacket, IV 396 p., 200 b/w ill. 50 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm, Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History (HMSAH 69) Languages: English . ISBN 9781905375820. This volume presents a study of the Burgundian court during the 15th century, and provides a forum for new research in various fields. In the course of the fifteenth century, the reputation of the Burgundian court rose to an unprecedented level, catapulted forward by ever growing territorial ambitions and accumulation of wealth. This reached a climax during the reign of Charles the Bold (1433-1477), the living embodiment of the pomp and pageantry of the Burgundian court and a generous patron of the fine arts. Rather than focusing on a single domain, this volume aims to shed light on Burgundian court culture as an organic whole, between the start of the reign of Philip the Good (1419) and the death of Mary of Burgundy (1482). It is intended to provide a forum for new research from the fields of History, History of Art, Literature and Musicology. With contributions (among others) from Wim Blockmans, Herman Brinkman, Barbara Haggh, Andrea Berlin, James Bloom, Till-Holger Borchert, Andrew Brown, Hendrik Callewier, Anna Campbell, Mario Damen, Sonja Duennebeil, Jonas Goossenaerts, Bieke Hillewaert, Andrew Hamilton, Eva Helfenstein, Jesse Hurlbut, Sophie Jolivet, Sascha Kohl, Sherry Lindquist, Jana Lucas, Samuel Mareel, Elizabeth J. ‎Study of Medieval Manuscripts of England. Festschrift in Honor of Richard W. Pfaff‎

‎Hardback, IX+438 p., 23 b/w ill., 175 x 255 mm. ISBN 9780866984324. The Study of Medieval Manuscripts of England: Festschrift in Honor of Richard Pfaff, edited by George Hardin Brown and Linda Ehrsam Voigts, consists of sixteen important studies, all dealing with manuscripts produced in medieval England. The first group reflects the meticulous analysis of liturgical manuscripts that characterize the honorand's career. These treat both early and late medieval liturgical concerns and include liturgy for Gilbertine lay brothers, a lost treatise by Amalarius, the re-working of an Anglo-Saxon Gospel book; the music for the Vigil of St. Thomas Becket; and the continuity of Processions from Old Sarum to Salisbury Cathedral. Two studies examine the liturgies having to do with saints in Sarum missals and breviaries. The second, historical, section of this volume includes three studies on Anglo-Saxon manuscripts. Six other analyses concern the high and later Middle Ages: an illuminated crusade manuscript; codicological evidence for revising the traditional dates associated with Gilbertus Anglicus's life and writing; evidence for Bishop William Reed's collection and donation of books to Oxford colleges in the later fourteenth century; anomalous writings in a sermon codex; the records of the private incomes of monks at Westminster Abbey; and a catalogue and analysis of medieval manuscripts containing moral philosophy.

‎Hardcover. 240 p., 85 b/w ill. 16 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm, Languages: French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503529790.

‎Reformations, Three Medieval Authors in Manuscript and Movable Type‎

‎Hardcover. XVI 231 p., 4 b/w ill., 1 b/w tables, 160 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503523163. This volume discusses the key shift from manuscript to print culture in the history of books, taking The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman as models of the way in which a medieval text's unique tradition influenced its transition from manuscript to print. The forces of the Reformation era did not produce the same effect across the varied textual legacy of the Middle Ages. Every text that made the transition from manuscript to print brought with it a set of concerns, a tendency to address a particular readership in particular ways, a physical presence developed in manuscript culture, all of which might shape the pathways by which a text might arrive in print, and what it might look like when it got there. This study follows The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman from their circulation in manuscript to their presentation in print, in order to track how each of them survived the metamorphosis of the relationship between writers and readers as the new technology was introduced. Taken together, the three case studies demonstrate to scholars of any medieval literature the variety of possible impacts made when texts composed in manuscript culture were prepared for printing. The great force exerted by the technological and cultural developments of the English Reformation, not least the more centralized legislative regulation of the press, has long been central to the study of the history of books. This volume takes into account the ways in which individual textual traditions pushed back or accelerated the forces of early modern reform, producing their own plural reformations.‎

‎Integral Palaeography‎

‎Hardcover. XVIII 174 p., 9 pl., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: English, French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503511771.

‎Classica et Beneventana, Essays Presented to Virginia Brown on the Occasion of her 65th Birthday‎

‎Hardcover. XXIV 444 p., 20 b/w ill., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: English, French, Italian, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503524344. The Festschrift volume Classica et Beneventana, presented to Virginia Brown on the occasion of her 65th birthday, brings together twenty-one insightful new essays by leading scholars devoted to the fields of classical reception and Latin palaeography. The authors investigate a wide-range of topics such as the development and application of the Beneventan script, comparative codicology, uses of early liturgical manuscripts, medieval artes and biblical texts and their readers, and the reception and dissemination of classical texts during the Italian Renaissance. Since 1970, Virginia Brown has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. She is recognized as one of the world's leading authorities in classical reception and Latin palaeography. Her numerous publications on the Beneventan script have dramatically altered our knowledge of the dissemination of this southern Italian book hand from 800 to 1600. Her editorial work for the Catalogus translationum et commentariorum, as a member of the Editorial Board and since 1985 as Editor-in-Chief, has resulted in several learned volumes tracing the fortuna and study of classical authors from antiquity to the year 1600. As editor of Mediaeval Studies from 1974 to 1988, she single-handedly produced tomes noted for their scholarly rigor and acumen. This collection of essays serves as a fitting tribute to a scholar who, via her scholarly research and editorial work, has done so much to advance the fields of palaeography, codicology, and the history of classical scholarship.‎

‎Copisti a Bologna (1265-1270)‎

‎Hardcover. 213 p., 23 b/w ill., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: Italian, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503524689. The mystery of writing is that there is nothing mysterious about it. If Saramago is right, then it is obvious that palaeography has not yet found all the keys we need if we are to enter amongst the people who gave form to the thoughts and memories of the medieval world. In order to reveal their identity ? the greatest mystery of all ? it is sometimes necessary to pass over what has already been written, affirmed and maintained, and to return to the sources instead. The ?Memoriali? conserved in the Archivio di Stato in Bologna reveal stories of men and women who created, with pen and quill veritable cathedrals of ink, indelible and sometimes of ineffable beauty. In this volume the names are collected, the commissions listed, where possible the careers and tribulations described of more than 270 copyists documented at Bologna between 1265 and 1270. In short, it is the documentary sources, not the works produced or such as have survived, on which the present book has been based.‎

‎Form and content of instruction in Anglo-Saxon England in the light of contemporary manuscript evidence Papers presented at the International Conference, Udine, 6-8 April 2006‎

‎Hardcover. XIII 546 p., 2 b/w ill. 4 colour ill., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503525910. The essays collected in this volume focus on a prominent aspect of Anglo-Saxon culture: educational texts and the Insular manuscripts which have preserved them. The English imported manuscripts and texts from the Continent, whilst a series of foreign masters, from Theodore of Tarsus to Abbo of Fleury, brought with them knowledge of works which were being studied in Continental schools. Although monastic education played a leading role for the entire Anglo-Saxon period, it was in the second half of the tenth and early eleventh centuries that it reached its zenith, with its renewed importance and the presence of energetic masters such as AEthelwold and AElfric. The indebtedness to Continental programs of study is evident at each step, beginning with the Disticha Catonis. Nevertheless, a number of texts initially designed for a Latin-speaking milieu appear to have been abandoned (for instance in the field of grammar) in favour of new teaching tools. Besides texts which were part of the standard curriculum, Anglo-Saxon manuscripts provide abundant evidence of other learning and teaching instruments, in particular those for a specialized class of laymen, the Old English laece, the healer or physician. Medicine occupies a relevant place in the book production of late Anglo-Saxon England and, in this field too, knowledge from very far afield was preserved and reshaped. All these essays, many by leading scholars in the various fields, explore these issues by analysing the actual manuscripts, their layout and contents. They show how miscellaneous collections of treatises in medieval codices had an internal logic, and highlight how crucial manuscripts are to the study of medieval culture.‎

‎Hardcover. 367 p., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: French, Latin, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503527420.

‎Hardcover. 343 p., 100 b/w ill., 38 b/w tables 12 colour tables, 165 x 240 mm, Languages: Italian, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503549491.

‎Hardcover. 792 p., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: French, Latin, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503533216.

‎Repertorium initiorum manuscriptorum latinorum medii aevi, Vol. IV - Supplementum. Indices‎

‎Hardcover. 597 p., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: French, Latin, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503536033.

‎Manuscripts of the 'Evangelium Nicodemi', A Census.‎

‎Hardcover. 292 p., 165 x 245 mm, Languages: English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9780888443700. The so-called Evangelium Nicodmi (EN), a fifth-century apocryphal passion narrative, showed remarkable vitality throughout the Middle Ages and by the close of the period established itself as one of the most influential religious texts, its authority approaching - though not often attaining - that of the canonical gospels. The importance of the EN for the religious culture of the Middle Ages has long been recognized, yet its scope and vicissitudes, its gradual evolution and transmission, have occasioned but a few tentative explorations. The reason for this paucity of detailed studies and for the continued absence of a comprehensive edition of the EN lies in the circumstances that make them all the more desirable - the apocryphon's enormous popularity in the Middle Ages and, as a natural corollary, the daunting abundance of extant manuscripts. Manuscripts of the Evangelium Nicodemi offers the first comprehensive listing of all known Latin manuscripts of the apocryphon. Descriptions of individual manuscripts provide information about the coodices (writing material, number of folios, size, date, place of origin, scribes, owners, contents) and about the texts those codices contain (incipits and explicit of the texts that make up the Evangelium). A series of five analytical and interpretative indexes serves as a guide to the composition of the Evangelium and its satellites, to the chronology of the manuscripts, to their contents, and to persons and places connected with them. The information gathered in this volume may be of assistance in studying the sources of vernacular translations of the Evangelium, patterns of its ownership and readership, medieval attitudes towards it, and the dynamics of its textual evolution; in investigating scribal practices of selection and compilation; and in identifying manuscripts of other apocrypha.‎

‎Catalogue of Western Book Illumination in the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Cambridge Colleges. Part Three: France: Volume One: c. 1000 - c. 1250‎

‎Hardcover with dusjacket, 296 p., 382 colour ill., 230 x 330 mm, 2015 Languages: English. ISBN 9781909400375. This volume contains an impressive range of texts, from Horace (Cat. 17) and Ovid (Cat. 61) to the earliest known copy of the Collectio Lanfranci (Cat. 5) and Gerard of Cremona?s translations of Rasis? works (Cat. 93). The bulk, however, consists of Bibles of two kinds: imposing glossed books, produced in great numbers in the twelfth-century, and their thirteenth-century successors, the compact pandects. Both categories include some of the most richly illuminated French manuscripts of the period. Among the former are two deluxe sets made for Thomas Becket, the first completed while he was in exile in Pontigny and Sens from 1164 until 1170 (Cat. 27-31), the second edited after his martyrdom by his secretary Herbert of Bosham (Cat. 32-34). The majority of the thirteenth-century Bibles are so-called ?Paris? or ?pocket? Bibles produced from the 1220s onwards, mostly in Paris, and containing the biblical books in a standard order. They are illuminated in a variety of figure and ornamental styles, some comparable to the Bibles moralisees of c.1220-1240 (e.g. Cat. 72), others bearing no resemblance to them (e.g. Cat. 73). There are also notable exceptions of complete Bibles made not in Paris, but in North-Eastern France or Champagne (e.g. Cat. 70), and displaying iconography, figure styles and order of books different from those found in their better-known Parisian contemporaries. We hope that the inclusion of numerous images in full colour representing Bibles illuminated in all of these different styles will inspire and support further research, especially on the ornamental initials which deserve more attention. While this volume contains outstanding examples of illumination, notably the work of the itinerant Simon Master (Cat. 46), it also includes books that are modest in artistic terms, but valuable in other ways. Among them is a glossed Ezekiel which boasts one of the finest Romanesque bindings to survive in Cambridge collections, made almost certainly in Paris c.1160-1170 (Cat. 41). Other aesthetically unassuming volumes form important groups of material, for instance, the books assembled by Master Robert Amiclas during his forty years in France and given or sold by him to the Cistercian Abbey of Buildwas in Shropshire (Cat. 20-26, 37).‎

‎Renaissance Manuscripts: The Sixteenth Century‎

‎Hardcovers with dusjackets, 2 vol., 721 p., 321 b/w ill. + 55 colour ill., 230 x 330 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9781872501307. This publication is the first comprehensive survey to establish the importance of Renaissance manuscript illumination in the history of sixteenth-century French art. Although illustrated printed books were circulating freely by the beginning of the sixteenth century, patronage of manuscripts became all the more special to the ruling elite, and commissions from the court, aristocratic circles and the higher clergy resulted in a surge of artistic creativity that produced a wide range of outstanding illustrated works from devotional books to translations of classical and humanistic texts. While continuing the tradition of French figurative art, ornamentation became a major element in the style of the period, with frames and borders becoming a significant feature of the aesthetic impact of the illuminated page. One hundred manuscripts have been chosen for this survey to represent the artistic excellence of French book production of the period, as well as to demonstrate the stylistic relationships between artists and between books that may be seen to form distinct groups. Many years of research enabled the author to identify the hands of individual illuminators, both named and anonymous, and to connect these to a particular artistic milieu or regional group. Moreover, not only are the stylistic aspects of the manuscripts analysed, but entirely new information regarding authorship, patronage and historical context are revealed here of hitherto unstudied material. The author, Myra Orth, completed her catalogue and introductory texts shortly before her sad death some years ago. Since that time, a number of scholars ? specialists in French manuscripts studies of the period ? have helped to update the literature that has more recently appeared relating to the manuscripts catalogued and to the individual artists and workshops discussed. Present locations of manuscripts that may have changed ownership since Dr Orth?s submission of her work have also been noted. To accompany the detailed catalogue, the publication includes a corpus of 360 illustrations that offers a significant visual conspectus of manuscript illumination of the period. In addition to the introductory text, the author also provides brief biographies of Artists and Scribes, Authors and Translators, and Patrons and Dedicatees Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in France (HMMSF 4)‎

‎Hardcover with dusjacket 252 PAGES 30x30 cm Illustrated. ENGLISH (ENG) edition . new book. ISBN 9789088810077. The Vatican Secret Archives have fuelled people's imagination for centuries. This is largely due to its incomparable long and interesting history. Today, the entire documentation kept in the Vatican Secret Archives occupies 85 kilometres of bookshelves and is constantly growing. It covers a continued chronological space of over 800 years. Moreover, its unique location, the majestic documentary treasures and the limited access contribute to this aura of mystery. The shroud of secrecy that has always surrounded this important cultural institution of the Holy See, due to the allusions to inaccessible secrets, as well as to the publicity it has always enjoyed in literature and in the media, makes this publication even more attractive. And now, for the first time, a publisher was allowed to walk around this wonderful location without any restrictions. The result is a magnificent book with impressive and atmospheric illustrations. Take an unforgettable walk past the most exceptional places and documents in these secret archives, including reading rooms that are only open to academia, as well as rooms that remain closed to the public, some of which are decorated with gorgeous 16th and 17th century frescos, while others accommodate several thousands of documents. You will be able to discover more than 100 of these documents in this book. Specialists of the Vatican Secret Archives have selected these documents and provided each one with a precise explanation. It is a careful selection of documents that show the richness of the Vatican Archives' contents. A highly appealing, unique and attractive book, for the layman as well as for the academic!‎

‎Carnaval des animaux Camille Saint-Saens. Facsimile Edition of the Autograph Manuscript.‎

‎Hardcover, 192 pages., 127 colour ill., 300 x 366 mm, ISBN 9782503581224. If there is one work, in all of Saint-Saens musical output that supremely captures the disposition so typical of the composer, it is the Carnival of the Animals. The collection De main de maitre showcases the facsimiles of the most prestigious scores of the Music Department of the National Library of France. Camille Saint-Saens? extremely long career as a virtuoso, as a brilliant pianist and organist (no fewer than seventy-six years of concerts) and his daunting catalogue of works (close to six hundred are known) have helped shape the image of him as a tutelary figure, omnipresent in the musical landscape of his time, the uncontested master of French music, showered with honours and glory, yet the champion of what was, in the young 20th century, an outmoded aesthetic. Such an image ignores, however, that from the outset of his career, at the end of the 1850s, until the 1890s, Saint-Saens was, on the contrary, regarded in the artistic world as an agitator, as a propagator of new ideas and as an intermediary between French and Germanic cultures. Republican from his earliest days, he was a major figure in musical life, involved in many concert societies, most notably the Societe nationale de musique, which he founded in 1871. He was also a polemicist, whose quill was much feared and who used the press as his vehicle of choice, to disseminate his ideas, attract public attention, and conquer new audiences. Similarly, if the image of the ?official? Saint-Saens, at home with the stage and the institutions and their etiquette, has endured, that of the ?intimate? Saint-Saens, known by a faithful few for his sparkling conversation, his sharp humour and taste for puns, has been lost. If there is one work, in all of Saint-Saens? musical output that supremely captures the disposition so typical of the composer, it is the Carnival of the Animals. Dedicated to the autograph manuscript of Camille Saint-Saens? famous Carnival of the Animals (1835-1921), this volume sheds a distinctive light on the musician?s personality. Completed in February 1886, The Carnival of the Animals was created for friends and performers close to Saint-Saens and was performed about fifteen times between 1886 and 1894 to a small audience. Because Camille Saint-Saens feared that his ?zoological fantasy? would damage his reputation, the work was published in its entirety only after his death. Since then, its immense popularity has continued to grow, so much so that it is now enjoyed by music lovers and the general public alike. Presented by Marie-Gabrielle Soret, a specialist of Camille Saint-Saens, who provides a detailed description of the work and the context of its creation, the facsimile includes the fourteen pieces of The Carnival of the Animals. It reveals the composer?s handwriting, all the performance directions as he noted them, but also to the playful animal drawings with which he decorated his score ? a fish for ?Aquarium, the skeleton of a dinosaur for ?Fossiles?, the pale blue pencil silhouette of a swan to illustrate the famous Swan.

Middeleeuwse ridderromans in Europa.‎

‎Paperback, 363pp., 16.5x24cm., talrijke ills. in zw., goede staat. ISBN 9789058263797.

‎Art & Science of Illuminated Manuscripts: A Handbook‎

‎Hardcover,528 pages , 830 col. ills, 190 x 255 mm, English, . ISBN 9781912554591. This book is designed to provide a guide for art historians, conservators and manuscript scholars to understand and support the increasingly popular cross-disciplinary research efforts focused on non-invasive scientific analyses of illuminated manuscripts. The results achieved by the research of the pioneering MINIARE research project based at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge led to the ground-breaking and acclaimed 2016 exhibition "COLOUR: The Art and Science of Illuminated Manuscripts." This was followed by an international Conference, in which art historians, paper and book conservators, and cultural heritage scientists were brought together to share new recent research not only on manuscripts but also on painting in other media. The Conference proceedings were published in the first two volumes of the HMMIMA series (2017-2018). The present publication includes 6 Essays by way of introducing and explaining the major topics being investigated, including the range of inks, pigments and paint binders used by illuminators; parchment-making; pigment recipes; and model books. The many analytical instruments and techniques that are used to investigate manuscripts are also discussed. Then follow 58 Case Studies of manuscripts from as early as the year 700 up to c.1600. All these are fully illustrated in colour and in great detail, and should act as examples to inform scholars in libraries, museums and other cultural institutions of the benefits of adding scientific tools to the range of methods used to investigate manuscripts.‎
