‎ANNE HIGONNET - FIRST PRINTING‎

‎Lewis Carroll - BRILLIANT PHOTOGRAPHY SELECTION‎

‎Phaidon London 2008 A man of many talents Lewis Carroll 1832-1898 the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was a distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Christ Church College Oxford and a successful author of children's books. But long before he published the famous Alice's Adventures in Wonderland story Carroll was a fine and accomplished photographer. Most famous for his exceptional photographs of children which include portraits of Alice Liddell the inspiration behind his classic book. Carroll compiled his photographs into albums and send them to major cultural figures in Victorian society in the hope that they might want similar portraits of themselves or their children. His photographs thus include sitters such as the family of the Pre-Raphaelite painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti John Everett Millais and Alfred Lord Tennyson amongst others. His work also features portraits of close family and friends as well as landscapes and still lifes demonstrating the remarkable extent and complexity of Carroll's photographic art. His work has become embedded deeply in modern culture influencing many artists and his photographs have seen a recent resurgence in popularity demonstrating their importance to the history of photography. Carroll is now considered one of the greatest Victorian photographers. Anne Higonnet's perceptive discussion of Carroll as a photographer and as a prominent member of Victorian society offers fresh insight into his relationships with his sitters in the light of social conventions of the time and emphasises Carroll's dreamlike vision of childhood. This beautiful book echoes the albums Carroll sent out by clipping the corners of the pages as he did. This first printing is a brilliant presentation of some significant Victorian photography. The perfect jacket is protected. Language: eng Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng 0.0 Language: eng. 1st Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New. Phaidon London hardcover‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Hardcover, Pages: xii + 276 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Language:English *new. ISBN 9780888442390.‎

‎Johann Buxtorf was a Hebrew scholar of prodigious energy and learning who believed that Christian scholars must master not only the Hebrew Bible but also the entire range of Jewish writing. He surveyed a vast corpus of Jewish texts and used them to describe the customs and ceremonies of Ashkenazic Jews. Working as an editor and a censor, he strove ? not always successfully ? to produce editions of the Hebrew Bible and prayerbook that contained the best of Jewish learning but were purified of anti-Christian sentiments. This book uses unpublished sources of many kinds, from Buxtorf?s marginal notes in his Jewish books to letters to him in Hebrew from Jewish print professionals, to tell his story. ‎Antoninus Florentinus.‎

‎Summa theologica. Nuremberg, Anton Koberger, 1477-1479.‎

‎Folio (ca. 315 x 465 mm). 4 vols. 252, (1 blank) ff. 321 ff. 462, (1 blank) ff. (1 blank), 336, (1 blank) ff. With 7 large penwork initials. Contemporary blindstamped full brown calf bindings over wooden boards with brass corner and edge fittings and 2 clasps. Edges sprinkled. The complete four-volume set of this very early and rare edition of a principal work, usually encountered only in separate volumes. This encompassing account of moral philosophy by the Florentine archbishop Antoninus (1389-1459, canonized in 1523) exerted a powerful influence over later studies; it is regarded as "probably the first - and certainly the most comprehensive - treatment from a practical point of view of Christian ethics, asceticism, and sociology in the Middle Ages" (NCE, I, 647). - Koberger's edition was preceded merely by that printed almost simultaneously in Venice (1477-80), and for the first (17 Oct. 1478) and fourth volume (29 April 1479) his is in fact the first: volume 2 (10 Oct. 1477) had already appeared in Venice separately in 1474 and 1477, and again in Speyer in 1477; vol. 3 (26 Jan. 1478) had appeared in Venice in 1477. - Volumes 1, 3, and 4 each boast two large penwork initials in red and blue, volume 2 has a large penwork initial in red, blue, and purple that incorporates a long marginal decoration. Entirely complete save for the blank first leaf not present in vols. 1-3, a wide-margined copy printed on strong, light-coloured paper, rubricated throughout and with Lombardic initials drawn alternately in red and blue. First and last leaved insignificantly soiled with minute worming. Occasional marginalia by an early hand. The uniform bindings show a central compartment composed of a blossom role not identified by Kyriss or Schunke on the covers; the spines were not decorated. - Bindings professionally restored. Some damage to several of the brass edge and corner fittings with some loss; clasps and endpapers repaired, using early material. - Provenance: all volumes bear the lithographic bookplate of the German historian and bibliophile Johann Georg Kloss (1787-1854), whose extensive collection of incunabula and early printing was sold by Sotheby's in 1935 in a sale notorious for the auctioneer spuriously claiming many items to have been owned by Melanchthon (Catalogue of the Library of Dr Kloss, of Franckfort a. M., Professor, lot 231). Hain/C. 1242. Goff A 871. GW 2186. BMC II, 415. Proctor 1981, 1983, 1988 & 1992. BSB-Ink A 594. IGI 689. Pell. 877. Polain 265. Voull., Bln. 1649, 1652, 1657 & 1659. ‎Inscriptiones sacrosanctae vetustatis non illae quidem Romanae, sed totius fere orbis summo studio ac maximis impensis Terra Marique conquistae feliciter incipiunt. Ingolstadt, P. Apianus, 1534.‎

‎Folio (210 x 294 mm). (40), DXII, (8) pp. Title page printed in red and black. With large emblematic title woodcut after Albrecht Dürer, hand-coloured around 1730; woodcut printer's device on verso of final leaf. With coloured woodcut arms of Raimund Fugger, 7 large woodcut initials showing astronomical and mathematical motifs, and 184 woodcut illustrations. Text surrounded by various woodcut borders throughout. Contemp. vellum with ms. spine title. Only edition. - Printed at the expense of the banker Raimund Fugger, this work presents classical inscriptions and statues collected all over Europe (of which many were in Fugger's own collection). The text is based on earlier studies by Peutinger, Pirckheimer, and others. An exceptionally fine work from the private press of Peter Apianus (1495-1552), mainly known as a mathematician and geographer. Title woodcut by Hans Brosamer (after Dürer) and Fugger's coat of arms (by M. Ostendorfer) splendidly hand-coloured and raised in gilt; undoubtedly the work of the book's previous owner, Johann Spiegler, who signs his name beneath the imprint on the title page ("Annumeror libris Joannis Spiegleri Juliomagensis"). Spiegler is known as a Constance miniaturist active during the first half of the 18th century (cf. Brun, SKL III, 1913) and is sometimes identified with the Constance painter Franz Joseph (Johann) Spiegler (1691-1757; cf. Thieme/Becker XXXI, 370f.). - Slight dampstains and edge tears near end; occasional paper loss remargined. Page tt1r (the printed area of which reaches far into the margin) lacks the final character of the right column. An uncommonly beautiful copy, last in the collection of the Maryland pharmaceutical investor Charles W. Newhall. VD 16, A 3086. IA 106.422. Adams A 1291. BM-STC (German) 37. Stalla 85. Brunet I, 342. ‎Arcussia, Charles d'.‎

‎La fauconnerie. Divisee en trois livres. Avec une briefve instruction pour traitter les autours, sur la fin de l'oeuvre [...]. Paris, Jean Houzé, 1599.‎

‎8vo. 272, (8) pp. With 6 full-page engravings of birds of prey (125 x 85 mm) plus 3 (of 5) repeats, all on integral leaves. Red goatskin morocco, gilt edges, signed in the foot of the front turn-in by M[arcel] Godillot (active as bookbinder 1938-1975), with wide gold-tooled turn-ins and gold fillets on board edge. Very rare second edition, one year after the equally rare first edition, of one of the earliest French treatises on falconry and hawking, by Charles d'Arcussia (1554-1628), falconer to King Henri IV (and later to Louis XIII), who dedicates it to the king. "The work is much esteemed on account of its originality and the amount of information it contains" (Harting), "the outcome of long practice and an astonishing amount of research work in every subject connected with [Arcussia's] favourite sport [hawking]" (Schwerdt). - Jean Tholosan published the first edition at Aix-en-Provence in 1598, but the USTC records only 3 copies of each, all in French libraries except for a copy of the present edition at the Wellcome Library in London. - The six birds of prey illustrated are described as: De l'espece du faucon premier de noz oyseaux, Du Lanier Nyais, Du sacre, Du Gerfaut, De l'Emerillon and De l'Autour Nyais. USTC oddly notes that D8 is cancelled, but it is certainly present here, with one of the 11 engravings. The book went through about a dozen editions before 1650. - With an 18th century endleaf, a monogram stamp (ca. 1800) on the title-page, and a modern armorial bookplate of the Verne d'Orcet family, whose great library on the subject of hunting was begun ca. 1900. Washed and lacking F8 (supplied in a lithographic [?] facsimile on 18th century [?] paper), but that leaf contains only repeats of 2 engravings plus their captions and a 4-line verse, with no other text. Three other plates are slightly shaved, affecting the tip of one bird's tail (present in the repeat plate), the beak of another and a small bit of foliage in a third plate, a corner torn off 1 leaf (affecting one shoulder note), a small hole in another, a worm hole in the foot margin of the last few leaves and a faint water stain in the fore-edge margin of a few leaves. Still generally in good condition, the binding fine. Very rare classic of falconry and hawking. Harting 153 (note). Nissen, IVB 35. Ronsil 3120. Schwerdt 41. Souhart 16. Thiébaud 28 & Suppl. col. 1050. Wellcome I, 388. French vernacular books 1653 (3 copies). USTC 20901 (same 3 copies). Cf. Lindner 11.0077.01 (1617 ed.); Sotheby's (Marcel Jeanson coll.) 28 Feb. to 1 March 1987, lot 31 (1598 ed.). Not in Adams. For the binder see Godillot: Fléty, p. 82.‎

‎Small 8vo. 4 parts in one volume. VIII, 285, (3) ff. With medallion portrait (legend: "D. Petrus Aretinus Flagellum Principum") on title (repeated three times). 19th c. calf (slightly worn). Pirated edition of Aretino's "comedie" (the first appeared 1553 in Venice) printed by one of the most rebellious and outspoken of all the Elizabethan printers. Wolfe's production was in all probability chiefly destined for the European continent, as all of Aretino's works had been on the Roman Index since 1558; copies were offered for sale at the Frankfurt Book Fair of 1589. Aretino's comedies are considered the best of his works. They rank among the great works of Renaissance drama, and many of their leading characters were prototypes for later playwrights. ‘La Talanta’, for example, prepared the way for Shakespeare’s character Falstaff. "[U]n frontespizo particolare ad ogni comedia [...] ha al fine una Lettera dell'Aretino a Daniele Barbaro" (Gamba). - One gathering misbound, but a nice complete copy. Edit 16, CNCE 2486. The size of the text block in red borders: 25 x 14.5 cm. 33 lines on each page. Printed on paper with European watermarks. Handwritten title on the bottom edge. A fine copy. The 19th incunable of the Islamic world, printed by Ibrahim Müteferrika's legendary Basmahane. The publication of Ottoman chronicles which began in 1734 with the edition of Naimâ's history, continued after a long break in 1783. This volume, containing the works of three court chroniclers who followed each other in rapid succession, is a chronological continuation of Mehmed Râsid's history, published by Müteferrika. Arpaemînizâde Mustafa Sâmî (deceased 1734) was the court's historian from 1730 to 1733, Sâkir Hüseyin (died 1742) in 1733, and Subhî Mehmed (ca. 1711-1769) from 1739 to 1745. The work of the three chroniclers is known as one coherent historiography, which presents the events of Ottoman history from 1730 to 1744. This work is a particularly valuable source on the Habsburg-Ottoman war between 1736 and 1739, in which Subhî participated in person. The prestige of the work, which offers detailed data on the administrative events (appointments, dismissals, and other biographical communications) is further increased by the fact that Subhî in many cases used original documents. This chronicle includes the events between the years 1730-1743. Contents: Ahd-i Humâyûn [i.e. Imperial constitutional declaration]., Zikr-i tecdîd-i san'at-i tab' [i.e. Preface on the Muteferrika Press of Vasif Efendi]., Fihrist-i târîh-i Sami ve Sakir ve Subhi [i.e. Contents of the work]., Text., History of Subhi. The workshop of Müteferrika began its historical mission in 1728. They published 17 works in 22 volumes. The printing house served as a means to the long-term goal of Müteferrika, his efforts to broaden the horizon and modernize the knowledge of Ottoman society and Islamic civilization. This is evidenced by the subjects of the books selected for publishing, the motivations put forth in the publisher's introductions, as well as by the documents illuminating the background of the publication of each book, also published in print. In 1742, with the publication of the Persian dictionary of Hasan Suûrî, a chapter of Ottoman book printing came to an end. With the death of Müteferrika, the printing of Turkish books was temporarily interrupted. The first generation of Ottoman-Turkish prints was soon followed by a new series when in 1756 Ahmed and Ibrâhîm Efendi (the latter perhaps the founder's son, according to speculative sources) made an attempt to resurrect the legacy of Müteferrika through the possession of a decree obtained from the Sultan. However, this experiment did not prove to be lasting, as it did not last longer than the new edition of the first Turkish printed book, the Lugat-i Vankûlî. After this, for several decades there was no continuation to the Turkish book printing established by Müteferrika, until in 1783 the workshop was put in operation again for the publication of six more works. The subjects of these late 18th century works were dominated by history and military technology, thus Müteferrika's strategy of book distribution made its way hand in hand with the efforts of modernization of the Ottoman state. The second edition of Lugat-i Vankûlî followed the principles of the first edition, and its introduction was composed on the model of the introductory pages of the two last books published under Müteferrika's supervision. The works published after 1783 display a noticeable development in typography not only as to its somewhat refined visual impression but also in its structure. For example, the d+h and r+h ligatures, (For more info please visit our website)‎
