Also a note tipped in to the front endpaper, citing some London auction information from the 1960's and a very faint pencil notation by someone noting that they bought the book in Wimbledon at Lloyd's Bookshop in 1967. Otherwise very clean throughout. Slight lean to book, (but not cocked). Illustrations of late 19th century European and American posters in black & white on every other page. Catalog designed by S. Neil Fujita who did all the decorations on the covers and individual title pages, in a playful abstract style. The cover design is signed, also the colophon lists Neil Fujita as the designer of the catalog. Sadamitsu "S. Neil" Fujita (1921- 2010) was an American graphic designer known for his innovative book cover and record album designs. Afficionados will know his works, for example the album covers he designed for Dave Brubeck, like the Time Out album (with the tune Take Five). A number of his book dust jacket designs were memorable, for example the one for Truman Capote's 'In Cold Blood', and perhaps his best, the one for Mario Puzo's 'The Godfather'. 11" high X 10" wide. This is the April 1926 issue of this catalog prepared for La Grande Maison de Blanc in Paris on the Place de L'Opera. About 24 pages with sections on lingerie, intimites, ladies fashion and gentleman's fashion. Illustrated throughout with line drawings colored with various pastel shades by Jullien. 2 color plates hors texte, one each by Jullien and Pierre Mourgue. All done in a art deco style. This is a program, published by the French magazine, Le Jour. It was issued on the occasion of a ball at the Opera on February 6, 1934. Printed by Draeger Freres, with color drawings by Mariette Lydis, Marie Laurencin, Vertes, Alexieff and Bret Koch among others. Article by Colette on Mariette Lydis. Photographs of movie stars and actresses throughout are printed with a special process, almost like silver or metal sheets. The process is called 'papier metallise'. Stars include Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow, Marcelle Chantal, Dolly Davis, among others. One sheet has a textile swatch printed with a light brown woodcut by Guinhald. This is a very good hardcover copy in green paper-covered boards, black leather spine with gilt titles. This copy used to belong to an ivy league university club in New York, and has their bookplate on the inside front cover (with their de-accessioning stamp), and a small blindstamp on the lower corner of the title-page. The covers are a little worn, but the inside text pages and especially the plates are fresh and clean. Text in German. Sections on European prints of the 17th century, 18th century, 19th century and the early 20th century. This is one of the classic surveys of print-making. 121 page text and 35 tipped-in color prints on heavy black stock, and hundreds of black & white illustrations. This is a very good hardcover copy in the original binding of brown marbled paper boards with an all-over green design. There is a large printed paper label with the title inset in an elaborately lithographed Gothic style frame. Tan paper covered spine of dark green cloth. The edges of the covers have a little wear. Inside there is an elaborately detailed title-page followed by 32 of 40 numbered plates. No evidence of plates being removed, as binding still very tight, but normally with 40 plates. All plates are black & white lithographs showing an amazing variety of typefaces and alphabets. Many are composed out of very imaginatively worked animals, plants, people or inventions forming the letters. A classic of this genre, here an incomplete copy with various faults, such as browning, tiny foxing, and 2 instances of later careful coloring of initials on different plates. Quite rare in the original binding. Large oblong folio, 11" high X 13 1/2" wide. Call or e-mail for digital photos.
