Chinese-fold leaves and sewing blue paper over boards; the paper label on the cover stylistically gives the title in letters which at first look appear as if Chinese ideograms spine faded. <br/><br/>Eleven full-page illustrations by Phil Little a San Francisco caricaturist etcher and commercial artist. Presentation copy inscribed by Little on the title-page "to my friend / Hal Stebbins / from / Phil Little." This poem was considered "the most famous poem written in California." Introduction by Ina Coolbrith a fellow-worker with Bret Harte on the Overland Monthly. Also a Note concerning the history of the manuscript by J.C. Rowell of the University of California Library.
