First English Edition of 'Sâir evlenmesi' in 1859. Rare. Sinasi was a pioneering Ottoman intellectual, author, journalist, translator, playwright, and newspaper editor. He was the innovator of several fields: he wrote one of the earliest examples of an Ottoman play, he encouraged the trend of translating poetry from French into Turkish, he simplified the script used for writing the Ottoman Turkish language, and he was one of the first of the Ottoman writers to write specifically for the broader public. Sinasi used his newspapers, Tercüman-i Ahvâl and Tasvir-i Efkâr, to promote the proliferation of European Enlightenment ideals during the Tanzimat period, and he made the education of the literate Ottoman public his personal vocation. Though many of Sinasi's projects were incomplete at the time of his death, "he was at the forefront of a number of fields and put his stamp on the development of each field so long as it contained unsolved problems.". Sinasi was an early proponent of a constitution for the Empire. Along with his colleague and friend Namik Kemal, Sinasi was one of the foremost leaders of the Young Ottomans, a secret society of Ottoman Turkish intellectuals pushing for further reform in the Ottoman Empire after Tanzimat in order to modernize and revitalize it by bringing it into line with the rest of Europe. Although Sinasi died before their goals for reform came to fruition, the Young Ottomans' efforts directly led to the first attempt at constitutional monarchy in the Empire in 1876, when the short-lived First Constitutional Era ushered in the writing of an Ottoman constitution and the creation of a bicameral parliament. Through his work as a political activist and one of the foremost literary figures of his time, Sinasi laid the groundwork in the minds of the public for contemporary and later reforms in the Ottoman Empire and, later, the modern Republic of Turkey. Sinasi's major contributions to reform and to Ottoman and Turkish culture were the result of his use of language. Prior to Sinasi, Namik Kemal, and Ziya Pasha, Ottoman writing was largely split into elite literature and folk literature. The writing of the elites was almost exclusively poetry (divan siiri) of a strict form, meter, and rhyme. It was written strictly in the Ottoman Turkish language, which incorporated vocabulary words from Arabic and Persian that were beyond the understanding of the common people (who spoke "vulgar Turkish" (kaba Türkçe), which more resembled Modern Turkish); it emphasized artistic excellence over communication. The elites wrote for each other, rather than for the general public. Both elite and folk literature incorporated elements of the Islamic tradition, but popular writing drew heavily on the Central Asian roots of the Ottomans. It employed both verse and prose, but members of the elite did not take it seriously. Sinasi altered the paradigm of writing within the Ottoman Empire by simplifying the language, intentionally engaging directly with an increasingly literate public, and introducing new, more European, genres to the masses. He attempted to forge a pure Turkish (öz Türkçe), through the elimination of words borrowed from other languages in order to make the content and style of his work more appealing and easier to comprehend. At the time of his death, Sinasi was working on a large-scale Turkish dictionary in order to help formalize the language. He also simplified the Arabic-based Ottoman Turkish script, combining the nashk and kufi calligraphy, but he "only succeeded in reducing the more than five hundred signs used since Muteferrika first cut his type to 112.". Only 300 copies were printed. Limited Edition. Güngor Dilmen was born in Tekirdag in 1930. In 1959, he won a first award with his play "Midas'in Kulaklari" in a competition which was organized by Cinema-Theatre Magazine. In 1960, he graduated from the Department of Classic Philology in the Faculty of Letter at Istanbul University. He received a fellowship and went to the USA to study lighting effects on stages and theater plays at Yale University and Washington University between 1961and 1964. He also went to the Habimak Theatre in Tel Aviv and the National Theatre in Athens to research theaters. In 1964, Dilmen worked at the Lighting Department of the Istanbul Municipality Theatre. In 1966, he then started working at Istanbul Radio as a dramatist. Dilmen taught at Durham University (1971) and Anadolu University (1982-1983). Between 1976 and 1980, he was a chair both in the Dramaturgy Department and the Research and Analysis Department at the Istanbul Municipality Theatre. Dilmen served as a chief in the Theater Department of the TRT Istanbul Radio. As of today, he teaches at the State Conservatory in the Theater Department of Istanbul University.

L'Arlésienne is a short story, written by Alphonse Daudet and first published in his collection Letters From My Windmill (Lettres de mon moulin) in 1869. On a commission from Léon Carvalho, the author transformed the story in 1872 into a play in three acts and five tableaux with music and chorus. Georges Bizet wrote incidental music for the play's first production on 1 October 1872, at the Vaudeville Theatre (now the Gaumont). The play was not successful and closed after only 21 performances. The music score was later used for two suites of the same name, the first established by Bizet himself in November 1872, the second after Bizet's 1875 death, by Ernest Guiraud. Another play was originally scheduled for the night of 1 October 1872, but it was withdrawn by the censors at the last minute and L'Arlésienne was substituted. Many of the patrons were less than happy with this change. Daudet's play formed the basis of the Italian opera L'arlesiana (1897), text by Leopoldo Marenco, music by Francesco Cilea. He had learned French, Arabic and Persian. He translated plays from French into Turkish, wrote scripts, played in theaters and films himself. This book depicts how historic/mythic characters subvert traditional gender roles to set a feminine identity of their own that does not accord with the patriarchal order. In the discussion of the marginalized characters, Ülker Erkan analysed Wertenbaker's plays namely New Anatomies, Our Country's Good, and The Love of the Nightingale and Pam Gems's plays Dusa, Fish, Stas and Vi, Piaf, and Queen Christina through several feminist criticisms. Feminist theatre as discussed in the subject-matter plays may prevent oppression and develop perspectives, which are egalitarian, fair, optimistic, hopeful, liberated from any oppressive systems, and full of future expectations.

In 1959, he won a first award with his play "Midas'in Kulaklari" in a competition which was organized by Cinema-Theatre Magazine. In 1960, he graduated from the Department of Classic Philology in the Faculty of Letter at Istanbul University. He received a fellowship and went to the USA to study lighting effects on stages and theater plays at Yale University and Washington University between 1961and 1964. He also went to the Habimak Theatre in Tel Aviv and the National Theatre in Athens to research theaters. In 1964, Dilmen worked at the Lighting Department of the Istanbul Municipality Theatre. In 1966, he then started working at Istanbul Radio as a dramatist. Dilmen taught at Durham University (1971) and Anadolu University (1982-1983). Between 1976 and 1980, he was a chair both in the Dramaturgy Department and the Research and Analysis Department at the Istanbul Municipality Theatre. Dilmen served as a chief in the Theater Department of the TRT Istanbul Radio. As of today, he teaches at the State Conservatory in the Theater Department of Istanbul University.

Edited by Ender Merter. Ihap Hulusi Görey was the first Turkish graphic artist best known for his illustrations on posters and labels of several Turkish brands in the Republican era. Ihap Hulusi's father was a well-known architect in Cairo and he wanted his son become a successful diplomat. For this Ihap Hulusi was sent to English schools in Cairo. However, his primary interest was in painting. In the meantime, he took lessons in painting by mail from Germany. In 1920, after graduating from the high school, Ihap Hulusi went to Munich, Germany, and studied painting for five years specializing in illustrations. Following his return, Ihap Hulusi's father enrolled him to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Istanbul against his will. So Ihap Hulusi dropped off after a while and devoted himself to commercial graphic art. Ihap Hulusi's first work was the illustration for a toothpaste advertisement poster. In 1929 he established his first workshop in Istanbul and designed 1930 the famous bottle label for the Turkish liquor Raki brand "Kulüp Rakisi". This artwork on the bottle label is still in use today. With the Latin alphabet reform in 1928, Atatürk commissioned him in 1934 to make illustrations in order to promote the adoption of the new Turkish alphabet. The graphic artwork showed Atatürk teaching the new Turkish alphabet to a little girl, Atatürk's adoptive daughter Ülkü. His first private exhibition was held in 1935 in Istanbul. Several exhibitions followed at home and abroad. Ihap Hulusi Görey got famous and performed illustrations for state and private companies until 1977. He worked uninterruptedly 45 years for the tickets of the Turkish State lottery, which come out three times a month. He designed the bottle labels of various products of the Turkish State Monopoly 35 years long. He illustrated also posters for the famous brands like the British whisky John Haig, Italian Cinzano and Fernet Branca. Görey designed also logos for some companies, which helped them get easily recognized and well known. In his late life he was much involved in performing calligraphy. He was called the "man who illustrated the Republic" or the "king of the graphic art". Ihap Hulusi Görey died on March 27, 1986 in Istanbul. He was succeeded by his fourth wife... (Wikipedia). Ahmet Mesrur Izzet Durum was a Turkish artist, sculptor, modeler of coins and paper money, and sculptor of 'Turkish medal of liberty' [i.e. Istiklal madalyasi]), (1873-1952). He is one of the earliest Turkish sculptors. He was born in Bosnia. After a while, he left the School of Medicine, where he studied and went to the Department of "Sanayi-i Nefise" [i.e. Fine Arts] Sculpture department. He was one of the first students of the department.
