Brown leather spine lettered by hand. Small tear along front hinge. Quarto. With black and white photographs and maps showing the anicent Biblical areas historical sites and personages etc Very good. Mother-of-Pearl carving a traditional handicraft in Bethlehem is said to have been brought to the city by Franciscan friars from Italy in the fifteenth century. Others believe it was introduced by Italian Crusaders sometime between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. However it began Bethlehem became famous as a center of the craft. Models of churches and mosques inlaid in Bethlehem with mother-of-pearl are on display in museums throughout the world. The first exhibition in the West of mother-of-pearl artifacts from Palestine was at the New York World's Fair in 1852. Ink gift inscription dated 1918 and mid-twentieth century ink ownership signature to upper flyleaf. A Fine bright copy.<br /> <br /> Frederick Cayley Robinson 1862 - 1927 was an accomplished painter and illustrator. His painting The Death of Abel held at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris is considered his most enduring work. "This work was the source of an illustration for The Book of Genesis published by the Riccardi Press in 1914; together with another masterpiece The Death of Rachel it constitutes his finest achievement as a book illustrator" ODNB. Robinson's illustrations for The Book of Genesis epitomize his melancholy style which reflected the influence of both ornate art deco aesthetics and the somber clarity of the Symbolist movement. London: R. Bowyer 1795. First thus. Near Fine. Two large quarto volumes 12 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches; 318 x 248 mm. Unpaginated. Text in double columns. With two copper-engraved title-pages with a separate title-page for the New Testament and sixty-two plates including two frontispieces from the works of Dürer Rembrandt Van Dyck Rubens and others. Lower corner of 3H3 possible paper-fault torn away with no loss of text. Some foxing to a few of the plates otherwise remarkably bright and fresh. Contemporary English full dark blue straight-grained morocco. Covers with two gilt borders surrounding blind-stamped Greek key design. Spines with five double raised bands ruled in gilt blind-stamped Greek key design and lettered in gilt in compartments. Board-edges decorated in blind elaborate gilt decorated turn-ins gray liners and endleaves all edges gilt. Gift signature to front flyleaf in volume one dated 1841 and a tipped-in square of paper with another nineteenth century gift inscription. Some light scuffing to the boards otherwise near fine.<br /> <br /> A spectacular example of the large paper edition this Bible sometimes called the "Killer Bible" for its typographical error in Mark 7 verse 27: "Let the children be killed" rather than "filled." It was richly illustrated by James Fittler 1758-1835 an esteemed British engraver of portraits and landscapes who served as marine engraver to King George III. He produced illustrations for the Boydell Shakespeare and Dibdin's Aedes Althorpinae. In this edition Fittler based his engravings on Old Master paintings befitting the gravity of the text. The printer Thomas Bentley produced large editions for Thomas Macklin Rudolph Ackermann and Paul Colnaghi all publishers of plate books; he also printed several of the earliest books for the Roxburghe Club.<br /> <br /> ESTC lists three editions of the Bowyer and Fittler Bible: this one which ESTC describes as the large paper edition; the regular two-volume quarto edition also 1795; and a: two-volume twelvemo edition 1796 which was issued in parts. Handsomely bound in contemporary full burgundy morocco sides framed and decorated in blind spine with gilt-decorated raised bands compartments tooled in blind gilt lettering gilt inner dentelles green watered silk endpapers and doublures original brass clasps all edges gilt. Text printed in two columns. Inner board with gilt presentation: 'A tribute of respect and esteem from the parishioners of Stoke Next Guildford to the Rev. C. Neat. For his faithful and much valued ministrations among them. 1835.' Some light rubbing to exterior contents clean and unmarked generally a very handsome presentation copy given to the Rev. Charles Neat who met with an unlucky end just three years after his parishioners presented him with this thoughtful gift see below. Royal Cornwall Gazette 6 July 1838 Death of the Rev. Charles Neat MELANCHOLY AND FATAL ACCIDENT.-On Tuesday last the Rev. Charles Neat was proceeding from Penzance to St. Ives to hold a Church Missionary Meeting; when near Halse-town the horse he was driving took fright and the reverend gentleman with his servant was thrown out from the gig. Mr. Neat we regret to say fell on his head and fractured the base of his skull and received other very serious injuries. The accident occurred about five o'clock and shortly after the Rev. Mr. Havart of St. Ives arrived with medical assistance.- Every thing that skill could devise and kindness dictate was promptly done; but was of no avail. Mr. Neat lingered in a state of insensibility till half past one o'clock on Wednesday morning when it pleased God to take him to his reward. He had preached on Sunday afternoon in St. Ives Church to a very large congregation; and very many were preparing to attend the Missionary Meeting on Tuesday evening when this mysterious providence prevented their assembling. Mr. Neat has left a widow and one son to deplore his untimely loss. The servant received no injury. The horse ran into the town about a mile and a half distant but did no further mischief. Royal Cornwall Gazette 13 July 1838 ST IVES. The funeral of the Rev. Chas. Neat whose melancholy death we announced last week took place on Tuesday the 10th instant. His remains were borne to the grave by ten of the most respectable Gentlemen of St. Ives; and followed by his afflicted son and many of the neighbouring clergy. Upwards of 3000 persons were present and with that decorum which a people so religious and right-minded would be sure to exhibit upon an occasion so solemn and touching. The beautiful service of our church was read with great feeling and propriety by the Rev. Wm. Havart the perpetual curate of St. Ives. Among the clergymen present to pay their last tribute of respect we observed the Rev. T. Vyvyan of Penzance; U. Tonkin of Lelant; H. E. Graham of Ludgvan; H. Rogers of Camborne; - Townsend of Marazion; H. Pinnock of Madron; Zennor; F. Bazeley of St. Dominick; Browne of Penzance &c. &c.-Mr. Neat was 44 years of age; although many of our readers may have considered him much older; his long residence abroad having considerably altered his appearance. Third issue of the subscribers' list as usual. "John Baskerville was a monumental figure in the history of English bookbinding and printing with contemporary accounts of his work ethic revealing a man deeply engaged in virtually every aspect of book production. Yet for most of his life and indeed for many decades afterwards he was decried as a mere amateur. Still other sources show an individual with highly idiosyncratic and paradoxical habits -- he lived with Sarah Eaves for nearly two decades out of wedlock; a devout atheist who was buried in his own backyard without Christian ceremony; a man who 'had wit but always against religion and decency'" F.E. A good copy of a scarce fragile book. The Pocket Bible includes abridged stories from both the Old and New Testaments. Twenty-fourmo size 28 pp. The Saint Dominic's Press founded by Harry Hilary Douglas Clarke Pepler flourished at Ditchling Sussex from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable" with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'.product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine handmade to machine-made paper and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines." N.b. quotes and information from "Three Private Presses" by Brocard Sewell. <br /> <br /> Per Taylor and Sewell "The Welfare Handbooks were a series of pamplets mainly concerned with social questions written from a Distributist and Roman Catholic standpoint." This volume contains scriptural passages pertaining to the age-old question of the relative merits of wealth vs. poverty vis-a-vis one's relationship with God. Embroidered bookbinding.
England London 1650. Size when opened: 17 x 25 cm. Ivory silk satin richly decorated in a colourful floral design with goldwork metal sequins and clusters of seed pearls the text "voir nostre domine" embroidered on the front and back. Exquisitely embroidered 17th-century English binding with a colourful floral design comparable to the very few silk bindings decorated in London during the years ca. 1625-1650 that have survived. The design which is identical on both sides showcases a crowned Tudor rose with its stem in a vase surrounded by flowers foliage and ornamented leaves with the text "voir nostre domine" at the top. It has been embroidered onto a base of ivory silk satin lined with white linen and decorated with four blue painted ornaments on the interior. The work has been executed with an exquisite pallet of green blue pink red orange white brown and gold threads brilliantly contrasting the ivory white of the base fabric.All sections and shapes have been beautifully outlined with gold thread fastened with red silk. The hearts of the roses the crowns the vases and the initials V and D of the text have been decorated with small pearls. Little round sequins are scattered in the foliage filling the negative space. At the interior two pockets have been sewn intended for the insertion of a book probably a Psalter of ca. 16.5 x 10 cm or 12mo format.Some sections are a little bit faded the embroidery on the spine and around the edges is partly detached missing a few pearls and sequins and likely some goldwork the silk is slightly water stained on the interior. Otherwise an extremely rare specimen of a very richly decorated silk bookbinding in very good condition.l Cf. Binding coming loose and visible between second whitepage and title-page. Ex-library copy with stamps. Several pages slightly age-stained. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare book, accurately portraying the Jews and their customs in the beginning of 19th-century England, is in good reading condition.

A Second Tale of a Tub: or, The History of Robert Powel the Puppet-Show-Man.
First Edition, imprimatur leaf, engraved frontispiece, [4], 219, [5] pp., contemporary panelled calf, hinges partly cracked, label, a nice copy. Written by the judge, traveller, diplomatist and pamphleteer, Sir Thomas Burnet, (with the collaboration of George Duckett). In fact the correspondence between Burnet and Duffett (Roxburghe 1914) makes it clear that this was a joint production. This political satire on the statesman Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, is far from being destitute of wit and humour and takes the form of an account of Martin Powell (fl.1709-29), the somewhat physically deformed showman who ran a celebrated puppet-show in Covent Garden. It also, of course, adopts the title of Swift's celebrated 'Tale of a Tub' (but is not recorded by Teerink-Scouten in the list of this work's spurious sequels etc.).

Covers very lightly scuffed with mild traces of wear at extremities; upper joint just starting at top; occasional touches of mild mostly marginal foxing. A very good or better copy complete and handsomely bound.<br /> <br /> An uncommon and beautifully printed edition of the Book of Common Prayer "the first single manual of worship in a vernacular language directed to be used universally by and common to both priest and people" Carter and Muir. Despite early revisions and some major alterations following the Restoration the original simplicity of the language has been presevered the text remaining substantially unaltered since 1662.
