‎Mansfield News Journal‎

‎Mansfield News-Journal Vol. 61 No. 161 August 14 1945‎

‎Mansfield OH: Mansfield News-Journal 1945. Extra edition. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Newspaper. Fair. Format is approximately 17 inches wide and 24 inches long. RARE surviving copy. Newspaper is fragile with some tears at the folds and one corner. Signed in the upper left corner of the front page by Paul Tibbets pilot of the B29 Enola Gay that bombed Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. It is not clear when Tibbets signed this as he was still overseas when this special Extra edition was published. He did retire to Ohio and the handwriting of his autograph may indicate he was old at the time. This Extra edition has a massive illustrated banner headline that reads "Japs Quit" and below the masthead other large headlines read War in Pacific Over! and Truman Announces Foe's Unconditional Surrender. These are all 'above the fold'. Some content came from the Associated Press and United Press International news services. This Extra edition appears to be four pages complete with the last page one of comics horoscope and a crossword puzzle. The Mansfield News Journal is a daily newspaper based in Mansfield Ohio that serves Richland Ashland and Crawford counties as well as parts of Morrow Knox and Huron counties in the north central part of the state. The News Journal was formed by the merger of the Mansfield News and the Mansfield Journal in 1932. The paper celebrated its 75th anniversary in December 2007. The paper is owned by Gannett The USA Today Network of Ohio and has downsized its print operation in to focus more upon online content. The newspaper's web site was chosen the state's best among newspapers in its circulation category in 2007 in the annual AP contest. Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. 23 February 1915 - 1 November 2007 was a brigadier general in the United States Air Force. He is best known as the aircraft captain who flew the B-29 Superfortress known as the Enola Gay named after his mother when it dropped a Little Boy the first of two atomic bombs used in warfare on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Tibbets enlisted in the United States Army in 1937 and qualified as a pilot in 1938. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor he flew anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic. In February 1942 he became the commanding officer of the 340th Bombardment Squadron of the 97th Bombardment Group which was equipped with the Boeing B-17. In July 1942 the 97th became the first heavy bombardment group to be deployed as part of the Eighth Air Force and Tibbets became deputy group commander. He flew the lead plane in the first American daylight heavy bomber mission against Occupied Europe on 17 August 1942 and the first American raid of more than 100 bombers in Europe on 9 October 1942. Tibbets was chosen to fly Major General Mark W. Clark and Lieutenant General Dwight D. Eisenhower to Gibraltar. After flying 43 combat missions he became the assistant for bomber operations on the staff of the Twelfth Air Force. Tibbets returned to the United States in February 1943 to help with the development of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. In September 1944 he was appointed the commander of the 509th Composite Group which would conduct the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war he participated in the Operation Crossroads nuclear weapon tests at Bikini Atoll in mid-1946 and was involved in the development of the Boeing B-47 Stratojet in the early 1950s. He commanded the 308th Bombardment Wing and 6th Air Division in the late 1950s and was military attaché in India from 1964 to 1966. He retired from the Air Force in 1966. In 1989 he published his memoir Flight of the Enola Gay which chronicles his life to that date. In 1995 he denounced the 50th anniversary exhibition of the Enola Gay at the Smithsonian Institution which attempted to present the bombing in context with the destruction it caused as a "damn big insult" due to its focus on the Japanese casualties rather than the brutality of the Japanese government.59 He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1996. ‎The Atlanta Journal‎

‎Souvenir Edition Gone With The Wind; THIS IS A FACSIMILE REPRINT.‎

‎Atlanta GA: Grand Granite Enterprises. Reprint of original 1939 Souvenir Edition Gone With The Wind. Newspaper. Good/No DJ issued. THIS IS A FACSIMILE REPRINT. Format is approximately 14.5 inches by 23 inches. Item has been folded in half top to bottom and then in thirds. 16 pages. Illustrations. THIS IS A FACSIMILE REPRINT. The original souvenir edition was issued on December 15 1939 Premiere Day of "Gone With The Wind". Every Ad and Every Article Pertains to "Gone With The Wind". The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the only major daily newspaper in the metropolitan area of Atlanta Georgia. It is the flagship publication of Cox Enterprises. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the result of the merger between The Atlanta Journal and The Atlanta Constitution. The two staffs were combined in 1982. Separate publication of the morning Constitution and the afternoon Journal ended in 2001 in favor of a single morning paper under the Journal-Constitution name. The Atlanta Journal was established in 1883. Founder E. F. Hoge sold the paper to Atlanta lawyer Hoke Smith in 1887. After the Journal supported presidential candidate Grover Cleveland in the 1892 election Smith was named as Secretary of the Interior by the victorious Cleveland. Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Margaret Mitchell worked for the Journal from 1922 to 1926. Important for the development of her 1936 Gone With the Wind were the series of profiles of prominent Georgia Civil War generals she wrote for The Atlanta Journal's Sunday magazine the research for which scholars believe led her to her work on the novel. The Journal carried the motto "Covers Dixie like the Dew". About 300000 people came out in Atlanta for the film's premiere at the Loew's Grand Theatre on December 15 1939. It was the climax of three days of festivities hosted by Mayor William B. Hartsfield which included a parade of limousines featuring stars from the film receptions thousands of Confederate flags and a costume ball. Eurith D. Rivers the governor of Georgia declared December 15 a state holiday. An estimated 300000 Atlanta residents and visitors lined the streets for seven miles to view the procession of limousines that brought stars from the airport. Only Leslie Howard and Victor Fleming chose not to attend: Howard had returned to England due to the outbreak of World War II and Fleming had fallen out with Selznick and declined to attend any of the premieres. Hattie McDaniel was also absent as she and the other black cast members were prevented from attending the premiere due to Georgia's Jim Crow laws which kept them from sitting with their white colleagues. Upon learning that McDaniel had been barred from the premiere Clark Gable threatened to boycott the event but McDaniel persuaded him to attend. President Jimmy Carter later recalled it as "the biggest event to happen in the South in my lifetime". Gone with the Wind is a 1939 American epic historical romance film adapted from the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell. The film was produced by David O. Selznick of Selznick International Pictures and directed by Victor Fleming. Set in the American South against the backdrop of the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era the film tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara Vivien Leigh the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner following her romantic pursuit of Ashley Wilkes Leslie Howard who is married to his cousin Melanie Hamilton Olivia de Havilland and her subsequent marriage to Rhett Butler Clark Gable. It received positive reviews upon its release in December 1939. The casting was widely praised. At the 12th Academy Awards it received ten Academy Awards eight competitive two honorary from thirteen nominations including wins for Best Picture Best Director Fleming Best Adapted Screenplay posthumously awarded to Sidney Howard Best Actress Leigh and Best Supporting Actress Hattie McDaniel becoming the first African American to win an Academy Award. It set records for the total number of wins and nominations at the time. Gone with the Wind was immensely popular when first released. It became the highest-earning film made up to that point and held the record for over a quarter of a century. When adjusted for monetary inflation it is still the highest-grossing film in history. It was re-released periodically throughout the 20th century and became ingrained in popular culture. The film has been credited with triggering changes in the way in which African Americans were depicted cinematically. The film is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time and in 1989 it became one of the twenty-five inaugural films selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. ‎Lancaster CA: Society of Flight Test Engineers 1979. Presumed First Edition First printing of this issue. Wraps. Very good. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. 31 1 plus covers. Illustrations. References. Table of Contents contains: Photo-Sonics Camera Record Low Altitude World Speed Record submitted by Instrumentation Marketing; A Computer Program for Aircraft Identification and Derivative Extraction submitted by Richard Hector David Maunder and Eugene Cliff; Special Factors in the Application of Semiconductor Transducers submitted by J. C. Kicks of Kulite Semiconductor Products Company and Flight Testing and Simulator Flight Fidelity submitted by Tom Galloway. The Society of Flight Test Engineers is a fraternity of engineers whose principal professional interest is the flight testing of aerospace vehicles. The Editor Edward N. Bradfield was employed for 35 years as a flight test engineer by the Air Force Flight Test Center Edwards Air Force Base California and later by the Northrop Grumman Corporation. His work included performance/flying qualities testing and systems evaluations on a variety of Air Force Navy and civilian aircraft including the B-l and B-2 bombers B-52G Cruise Missile Carrier F5F KC-135R Tanker C-5A Wing Modification C-130 YC-14 STOL Transport Boeing 737 French Mirage G P-1127 OV-1 A-4 and numerous classified aircraft programs some of which are on display in the Smithsonian Air and Space museum. Flight testing is a branch of aeronautical engineering that develops and gathers data during flight of an aircraft or atmospheric testing of launch vehicles and reusable spacecraft and then analyzes the data to evaluate the integrity and aerodynamic flight characteristics of the vehicle in order to validate the design including safety aspects. The flight test phase accomplishes two major tasks: 1 finding and fixing any design problems and then 2 verifying and documenting the vehicle capabilities for government certification or customer acceptance. The flight test phase can range from the test of a single new system for an existing vehicle to the complete development and certification of a new aircraft launch vehicle or reusable spacecraft. Therefore the duration of a particular flight test program can vary from a few weeks to many years. Military programs differ from commercial in that the government contracts with the aircraft manufacturer to design and build an aircraft to meet specific mission capabilities. These performance requirements are documented to the manufacturer in the aircraft specification and the details of the flight test program among many other program requirements are spelled out in the statement of work. In this case the government is the customer and has a direct stake in the aircraft's ability to perform the mission. Since the government is funding the program it is more involved in the aircraft design and testing from early-on. Often military test pilots and engineers are integrated as part of the manufacturer's flight test team even before first flight. The final phase of the military aircraft flight test is the Operational Test OT. OT is conducted by a government-only test team with the dictate to certify that the aircraft is suitable and effective to carry out the intended mission. Flight testing of military aircraft is often conducted at military flight test facilities. The US Navy tests aircraft at Naval Air Station Patuxent River and the US Air Force at Edwards Air Force Base. The U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School and the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School are the programs designed to teach military test personnel. The make-up of the Flight Test Team will vary with the organization and complexity of the flight test program however there are some key players who are generally part of all flight test organizations. The leader of a flight test team is usually a flight test engineer FTE or possibly an experimental test pilot. Other FTEs or pilots could also be involved. Other team members would be the Flight Test Instrumentation Engineer Instrumentation System Technicians the aircraft maintenance department mechanics electrical techs avionics technicians etc. Quality/Product Assurance Inspectors the ground-based computing/data center personnel plus logistics and administrative support. Engineers from various other disciplines would support the testing of their particular systems and analyze the data acquired for their specialty area. Since many aircraft development programs are sponsored by government military services military or government-employed civilian pilots and engineers are often integrated into the flight test team. The government representatives provide program oversight and review and approve data. Government test pilots may also participate in the actual test flights possibly even on the first/maiden flight. ‎Bradfield, Edward N. (Journal Editor)‎

‎Journal of The Society of Flight Test Engineers; Volume III Number 3 September 1981‎

‎Lancaster CA: Society of Flight Test Engineers 1981. Presumed First Edition First printing of this issue. Wraps. Good. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. 48 plus covers. Footnotes. Formulae Illustrations. References. Cover has some wear and curving. Table of Contents contains: Fuel conservation DC-9 Series 20/30/40 Extracted from the DC Flight Approach July 1979 issue published by Douglas Aircraft Company and Procedures and Analysis Techniques for Determining Static Air Minimum control Speeds submitted by Edward N. Bradfield Flight Test Center Edwards AFB. At the time of publication Bradfield was Chief of the Strategic Projects Branch. This article was extracted from an Office Memorandum authored by Mr. Bradfield. ‎McIvor, Kirsten (Translator) and The Chugoku Newspaper‎

‎Exposure; Victims of Radiation Speak Out‎

‎Tokyo: Kodansha International 1992. First Edition Stated First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 327 1 pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations. Radiation and its Victims--A Chronological Table. Publisher's ephemera laid in. Foreword by Robert J. Lifton. Introduction by Ogata Yukio. Appendix. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Some pages are 'off white'. A team of journalists from the Hiroshima-based newspaper interview victims exposed to radiation investigate environmental dangers and appeal for an end to nuclear testing. The Chugoku Shimbun "Midland News" is a Japanese local daily newspaper based in Hiroshima. It serves the Ch goku region of Japan with a market share in Hiroshima Yamaguchi Shimane Okayama and Tottori Prefectures. The newspaper publishes morning and evening editions. The morning paper has a daily circulation of 646900. And the evening paper has a daily circulation of 40600. The Daily Chugoku was established on May 5 1892 in Hiroshima and was founded by its editor Saburo Yamamoto. In 1908 the newspaper changed its name to The Chugoku Shimbun which translates to "Middle Country Newspaper" geographically Hiroshima is near the center of the Japanese archipelago. The A-Bomb on August 6 1945 killed 113 newspaper employees and destroyed the building and equipment. The newspaper restarted publishing on August 9 by asking other newspapers for help. Derived from a Publisher's Weekly article: A year-long study led a team of Japanese journalists to conclude that nuclear testing refining and power plants continue to contaminate human beings and create more hibakusha radiation victims. First published as a series of articles in a Hiroshima newspaper in 1989-1990 this impressive in-depth report details nuclear contamination's appalling toll: the still-lethal effects of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster; the destruction British French and Japanese nuclear tests and refineries have caused in the South Pacific; the danger the ongoing development of nuclear power for ``peaceful'' uses poses to the planet and its inhabitants. The authors cite New Mexican and Nambian villagers whose homes were irradiated by uranium mining and fishermen in India who became ill as a result of their proximity to the nation's ``radiation coast'' on the Arabian Sea and to the Tarapur Nuclear Complex reputedly ``the dirtiest nuclear facility in the world.'' Although national and international scientific research groups show increasing awareness of the need for action especially concerning nuclear waste the authors call upon Japan to display even greater initiative in this area.
