‎Gertrude E Wood‎

‎1943-1947 Jam-Packed Diary of a Dedicated Teacher on the Home Front Chronicling Daily Life in the Boston Area During WW2‎

‎Boston Massachusetts. Very Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a very thorough 5-year diary written by a Massachusetts teacher who comments almost as frequently on the US war effort as she does on her teaching job about which she is passionate. The diary was written by Gertrude E. Wood of Boston Massachusetts b. 1909. There is minimal information available about Wood however we believe she was born in Maine and moved to the Boston area where she taught elementary school. Begun in 1943 her diary chronicles her day-to-day experiences throughout the war years. When people think of the involvement of citizens in WWII usually it's the men and women in uniform that come to mind immediately. However their incredible effort could not have been sustained and ultimately successful without the enormous effort of civilians on the home front. Gertrude is an example of someone keeping things moving in the US while also hawkishly watching and recording the war efforts as they had a big impact on her day to day life and the lives of those around her. Excerpts follow: “Reported for surgical dressing work with a group much smaller than usual. Went to the movies with Doris M and Doris F. Fred Astair and Rita Hayworth in “You Were Never Lovelier” Feb 2 1943. “Was one of the few who reported for Red Cross work. Closing days are busy days. Paid $.40 for a cantaloupe. It was good! ” June 2 1943. “D-Day at last! Not very complete reports yet but it seems that the opposition the first day was not too severe” June 6 1944. “Allied armies across the German order. Tremendous air attacks on Germany. How much longer can she hold out! ” Sept 11 1944. “Attended War Relief work session at Women’s Club meeting. Information comes that the Red Cross quota has been filled. Fewer casualties than expected” Oct 25 1944. “The new year dawns on a chaotic world. Victory and peace do not seem so near as they did a few months past” Jan 1 1945. “Japan still subjected to heavy bombing. Gen Eisenhower reported as saying unconditional surrender will be required of Nazis and not negotiated” Mar 28 1945. “Publication Club makes a good start. It looks like an interested enthusiastic staff. Laval of France has been executed” Oct 15 1945. “Pat received word that her brother Fred has reached home. She off to Bridgewater for weekend Doris to the School Follies I to church” Mar 15 1946. “Back to school for full session first day including a one hour teacher’s meeting. Gerald Kelly back on the job in Miss Taylor’s place. Miss Kelley carries on” Sept 9 1946. “Word comes that the execution of top ranking Nazis has taken place. Goering committed suicide by poison. C and I dine at the Blue Sea Tea Room” Oct 6 1946. “Pat and I go to the “Open Night” lecture at Harvard Observatory. Interesting lecture on the moon. We look at the moon and the Pleiades through the telescope” Nov 21 1947. For a social historian this diary is a goldmine of information about daily life and attitudes in America during WWII. As one would expect from an English teacher the entries are well-written. Those with an interest in education would find her many remarks about her work and concerns like curriculum development interesting to read. A military historian especially one focused on the ‘Home Front’ would find this an excellent record of how information about the reality of war on the battlefield was being understood at home. This diary would certainly be a good resource for a Women’s Studies program as it chronicles not only the life and times of a single working woman but also the times when there was an entire social revolution taking place about the role of women in society. Measuring 4.0x5.5 inches it contains 365 pages and is 100% complete. The leather cover is in good condition as are the binding and pages. The handwriting is legible. Overall VG. ; Manuscripts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 365 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

‎STATEN ISLAND NEW YORK CITY NY. Good. 1945. Manuscript. On offer is the charming yet intriguing handwritten of Gertrude Frisch who is a very young 12 year old girl at the beginning of the 5 year diary wherein her first entry she reveals she slept in mommy's pink evening gown for New Year's Eveshe turns 13 years old July 20 1945. Dedicated to writing in 1945 1946 and 1947 her diary learns very little about the 16 and 17 year old girl as perhaps she has outgrown the book but by 1949 in the few entries we found Gertrude has become more teenager and lees youngster - one mentions buying a cigarette lighter for a friend and the other about filching Nana's liquor another about her admiration for a particular boy and also that she is now full time employed. A New York girl through and through she visits and goes to Stapletons Gimbles Yankee Stadium Bayonne not so nice meet at 4 Corners Museum of Natural History and going to Helldivers at Tomp. Stadium . A casual reading suggests that they sell their house in one part of New York and then move to Staten Island. Many people are identified and one will be particularly moved to read some of her entries about her beloved Nana Cohen. ‎GERTRUDE MONTANEY‎

‎1941-1944 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT 5 YR DIARY OF A ROBUST YOUNG NEWLYWED ONLY TO SEE HER DIE IN A FOGGY WEST COAST CAR CRASH‎

‎NEAR TACOMA WASHINGTON WA. Good. 1941. Manuscript. On offer is the original handwritten manuscript 5-year diary of Gertrude Montaney wife of Louis P. Montaney. Gertrude writes a few 1941 entries but is much more dedicated in 1942 through the end of 1944. It appears Gertrude and Louis live near Tacoma and they mention Olympia Portland Forest Grove Eugene. She lived near a Black Lake and enjoyed fishing often listing her "catch of the day." She was quite the baker often making all manner of bread including dog bread gumdrop cookies cherry fudge and more. They also raised and ate rabbits upon occasion. Some of her activities included: churning sewing reading quilting playing checkers Red Cross work crocheting afghan making root beer and gardening. Here are a few quotes: Feb. 13 1941 "Married to Louis P. Montaney Thursday at our home on Black Lake by." May 13 1942 "Nice day sun not too bright. Finished ironing pressed some dresses & trousers. Did regular work. Caught trout 14 in. long & bass 11 inches long and 3 perch." And then as life often does suddenly Louis takes over the writing on Dec. 10 1944 "I got….to go get her & in returning we were run into & wrecked. We took Gertie to hospital badly hurt. fog." Then the next few entries predictably are quite sad as he writes of her demise on the 13th. There is a front inside cover notation that she passed away the date and that he was taking over writing the diary same last name. Included also with the diary are 7 b/w negatives which appear against the light to be of people at the lake. The diary ends January 4th 1945. The clasp is gone but the diary is in otherwise very good shape. ‎Gertrude W B Steele‎

‎1916-1927 Two Diaries by the Busy Affluent Wife of US Navy Dr. John Murray Steele Detailing Life and Death in Annapolis MD‎

‎Annapolis Maryland MD Usa: US Navy Doctor's Wife in Annapolis Maryland. Good. 1916-1927. Hardcover. On offer are two diaries written in the early years of the 20th century written by Gertrude Steele wife of Dr. John Murray Steele USN. Gertrude Steele was born in 1865 and passed away in 1931 at the age of 66. Her husband had graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Pennsylvania in 1875 and had immediately joined the U. S. Navy rising to the rank of Commander. They lived in Annapolis MD. Our informal research has not turned up any additional biographical information. The first diary dates from 1916. Her entries show that she enjoyed a good standard of living reflective of her husband's standing in the community. Her entries are replete with the names of her many friends and acquaintances: "An ideal spring day - washed and shopping - then I met Connie Johnston and walked around with her to Carolyn's - & there C&D were so cordial & made us stay to lunch - I enjoyed it very much…" May 12; "Rae went to S>S with a little girl Jeffers and L & I went to see church. After tea we walked to College grounds and then came back in time to hear Mus…" July 2; "I woke up from my day of pleasure putting in a full day today unpacking and selecting things…" Sept 21; "John took me to Rosewood where Dr. Herring of State Lunacy Commission spoke - then we went to Hatties to spend the night - as she is giving Rae a birthday dinner - just ourselves - was lovely - ghosts and spooks and cake with black cats…" Oct 31. The second diary is a 5-year diary covering the years 1923-1927. It includes the year that her husband died. It certainly shows that Steele had a wide social circle and that she was active in meeting and spending time with her friends. The diary is simply crammed with entries and margins were not off limits to her writing: "Busy as a bee - at 9 had to go to music lesson - J brought us some lobster salads for lunch - it was so good G & I went out to Hattie's was feeling badly…" Feb 17 1923; "A heavy snow storm but John is going to sail on the "Allegheny" Feb 19 1924; "Kate called for me in Hatties car. Took us to lunch . M picked me up and George B and I and Flynn & M took lots of things out to the country. They are next to all night. J and I played " Mar 24 1923; "At 9: 30 A. M. John called . We all came quickly . Said he wanted a doctor . At 12: 30 he was gone…" Dec 19 1927. Throughout the dairies there are newspaper clippings noting travels of individuals attendees at balls etc. These diaries paint an excellent picture of a woman's busy life in these early years of the 20th century. A social historian would find them simply packed with details of life among the more well-to-do members of her society. For a genealogist it is a rich trove of names and connections especially valuable as they are New England families where records are extensive. This is an excellent resource for a Women's Studies program as it very clearly shows the roles women played in that society at that time. The 1916 diary measures 7.5x5" contains 183 pages plus memoranda and is 100% complete and in good condition. The 1923-1927 diary measures 7.5x5" has 365 pages and is 100% complete. It is in fair to good condition. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . US Navy Doctor's Wife in Annapolis Maryland hardcover‎
