ABOUT THIS BOOK: On a mild winter's evening in 1850 Isabella Robinson set out for a party. Her carriage bumped across the wide cobbled streets of Edinburgh's Georgian New Town and drew up at 8 Royal Circus a grand sandstone terrace lit by gas lamps. The guests were gathered in the high airy drawing rooms on the first floor the ladies in glinting silk and satin pulled tight over boned corsets; the gentlemen in tailcoats waistcoats and neckties. When Mrs Robinson joined the throng she was at once enchanted by a Mr Edward Lane a handsome medical student ten years her junior. He was 'fascinating' she told her diary before chastising herself for being so susceptible to a man's charms. But a wish had taken hold of her which she was to find hard to shake. ‎His Truth Is Marching On : John Lewis And The Power Of hope‎

‎Random House New York 2021. Medium Trade Paperback. Very Good. Medium Trade Paperback. 354 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Random House New York 2021. CONDITION: This book is in very good condition. More specifically: Covers have no creasing. Edges of covers have superficial edgewear and corners are lightly bumped. Spine is uncreased. . Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. ABOUT THIS BOOK: An intimate and revealing portrait of civil rights icon and longtime U.S. congressman John Lewis linking his life to the painful quest for justice in America from the 1950s to the present-from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author ofThe Soul of America NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST ANDCOSMOPOLITAN John Lewis who at age twenty-five marched in Selma Alabama and was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge was a visionary and a man of faith. Drawing on decades of wide-ranging interviews with Lewis Jon Meacham writes of how this great-grandson of a slave and son of an Alabama tenant farmer was inspired by the Bible and his teachers in nonviolence Reverend James Lawson and Martin Luther King Jr. to put his life on the line in the service of what Abraham Lincoln called "the better angels of our nature." From an early age Lewis learned that nonviolence was not only a tactic but a philosophy a biblical imperative and a transforming reality. At the age of four Lewis ambitious to become a minister practiced by preaching to his family's chickens. When his mother cooked one of the chickens the boy refused to eat it-his first act he wryly recalled of nonviolent protest. Integral to Lewis's commitment to bettering the nation was his faith in humanity and in God-and an unshakable belief in the power of hope. Meacham calls Lewis "as important to the founding of a modern and multiethnic twentieth- and twenty-first-century America as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison and Samuel Adams were to the initial creation of the Republic itself in the eighteenth century." A believer in the injunction that one should love one's neighbor as oneself Lewis was arguably a saint in our time risking limb and life to bear witness for the powerless in the face of the powerful. In many ways he brought a still-evolving nation closer to realizing its ideals and his story offers inspiration and illumination for Americans today who are working for social and political change. ‎The Bohemians : Mark Twain and the San Francisco Writers Who Reinvented American Literature‎

‎Penguin Press New York 2014. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Hardcover. 319 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Penguin Press New York 2014. First Edition. CONDITION: The book itself is in fine condition and comes in fine dust jacket. More specifically: Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. . Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. ABOUT THIS BOOK: "The unforgettable story of the birth of modern America and the western writers who gave voice to its emerging identity" "The Bohemians" begins in 1860s San Francisco. The Gold Rush has ended; the Civil War threatens to tear apart the country. Far from the front lines the city at the western edge roars. A global seaport home to immigrants from five continents San Francisco has become a complex urban society virtually overnight. The bards of the moment are the Bohemians: a young Mark Twain fleeing the draft and seeking adventure; literary golden boy Bret Harte; struggling gay poet Charles Warren Stoddard; and beautiful haunted Ina Coolbrith poet and protectorate of the group. Ben Tarnoff's elegant atmospheric history reveals how these four pioneering western writers would together create a new American literature unfettered by the heavy European influence that dominated the East. Twain arrives by stagecoach in San Francisco in 1863 and is fast drunk on champagne oysters and the city's intoxicating energy. He finds that the war has only made California richer: the economy booms newspapers and magazines thrive and the dream of transcontinental train travel promises to soon become a reality. Twain and the Bohemians find inspiration in their surroundings: the dark ironies of frontier humor the extravagant tales told around the campfires and the youthful irreverence of the new world being formed in the west. The star of the moment is Bret Harte a rising figure on the national scene and mentor to both Stoddard and Coolbrith. Young and ambitious Twain and Harte form the Bohemian core. But as Harte's star ascends--drawing attention from eastern taste makers such as the "Atlantic Monthly"--Twain flounders questioning whether he should be a writer at all. The Bohemian moment would continue in Boston New York and London and would achieve immortality in the writings of Mark Twain. San Francisco gave him his education as a writer and helped inspire the astonishing innovations that radically reimagined American literature. At once an intimate portrait of an eclectic unforgettable group of writers and a history of a cultural revolution in America "The Bohemians" reveals how a brief moment on the western frontier changed our country forever. ‎Rod: The Autobiography‎

‎Century UK 2012. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. Trade Paperback. 378 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Century UK 2012. CONDITION: This book is in near fine condition. More specifically: Covers have no creasing or wear. Spine is uncreased. . Pages are lightly tanned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: This is the long-awaited autobiography of one of rock's true megastars. Rod Stewart aka Rod The Mod and to a very select few Dad was born the working-class son of a Scottish plumber in North London. He was never as some stories later had it a professional footballer or a gravedigger though he did become a bit of a singer - and a fairly good one at that. Rod started out in the early 1960s playing alongside acts like "The Rolling Stones" before his distinctively raspy voice and natural onstage presence caught the eye of the iconic guitarist Jeff Beck. An often-interesting two year stint with Beck's group paved the way into the angst-inducing for the world's hoteliers five years with the Faces whose offstage antics with alcohol hotel rooms and groupies have become the stuff of legend. And during all this he found a spare moment to write "Maggie May" among a few others and launch a solo career that has seen him sell in excess of 200 million records be inducted into the Hall of Fame twice and play the world's largest ever concert. Not bad as he says for a bloke with a frog in his throat. And then there is his not so private life: marriages divorces and affairs with some of the world's most beautiful women - Bond girls movie stars and supermodels - a struggle with steroid dependency and a brush with cancer which very nearly saw it all slip away. Rod's is an incredible life and here thrillingly and for the first time he tells the whole thing leaving no knickers under the bed. Joyously entertaining and at times deeply moving this is the remarkable story of a guy with one hell of a voice - and one hell of a head of hair. Quantity Available: 1. A superstitious Russian immigrant who claimed to be royalty Maria had been told by a gypsy long before little Natasha Zakharenko's birth that her second child would be famous throughout the world. When the beautiful child with the hypnotic eyes was first placed in Maria's arms she knew the prophecy would become true and proceeded to do everything in her power everything to make sure of it.
