Octavo 8 ½" x 6" bound in original publisher's quarter cloth over blind stamped yellow boards with gilt lettering to spine in original jacket. Inscribed First edition.Langston Huges' poetry and fiction portrayed the lives of the working-class blacks in America lives he portrayed as full of struggle joy laughter and music. Permeating his work is pride in the African-American identity and its diverse culture. Hughes stressed a racial consciousness and cultural nationalism devoid of self-hate. His thought united people of African descent and Africa across the globe to encourage pride in their diverse black folk culture and black aesthetic. Hughes was one of the few prominent black writers to champion racial consciousness as a source of inspiration for black artists. His African-American race consciousness and cultural nationalism would influence many foreign black writers including Jacques Roumain Nicolás GuillénLéopold Sédar Senghor and Aimé Césaire. Along with the works of Senghor Césaire and other French-speaking writers of Africa and of African descent from the Caribbean such as René Maran fromMartinique and Léon Damas from French Guiana in South America the works of Hughes helped to inspire the Négritude movement in France. A radical black self-examination was emphasized in the face of European colonialism. In addition to his example in social attitudes Hughes had an important technical influence by his emphasis on folk and jazz rhythms as the basis of his poetry of racial pride. ‎Honolulu H.T.: Gurrey's Limited 1918. 631pp. 12mo. Drab wrappers printed label. A very good copy. First edition of the author's first book. After earning a medical degree in Boston and practicing in his native Maine for nine years Woodbury moved with his new bride to Honolulu in 1916 where he maintained a homeopathic practice for three years and was active in amateur literary and dramatic productions. In March 1919 he left the islands for San Francisco and after two years practice there he returned to New England. His war sonnets are interleaved with and often are responses to quotations from political military and literary writers Seeger Hagedorn Kipling Cicero Wells Bridges et al that are printed en face with them. Woodbury was not a combatant during the war but served as an examiner at the Honolulu Naval Station. OCLC locates some 20 copies but at this point one would be hard pressed to locate an actual printed original rather than a blurry p.o.d. [Gurrey's Limited] unknown books‎

Handsome first edition of this slim satirical poem one of the last works by the short-lived English poet and satirist 1732-64. In this name-dropping attack Churchill supports his good friend the radical politician and journalist John Wilkes 1725-97 and satirizes statesman John Montagu the 4th Earl of Sandwich 1718-92. Ironically this hails from the library of one of America's greatest candidates -- Adlai E. Stevenson II 1900--65 Illinois governor and two-time presidential candidate. His rubber-stamped ownership signature appears on the front flyleaf. A fine association copy of this scarce satire. Printed for the Author paperback books‎

The grand dame of U.S. literary periodicals of the 20th century and through successive editorships a survivor unto this day. As Hoffman et al note "the most exciting years of POETRY were the first ones 1912-1917 when the debate over free verse and imagism seemed vital." Pound's association with POETRY as foreign correspondent was an integral part of that vitality and lasted in a formal sense from the first issue up through February 1919 and it was via his efforts that so many significant poets from abroad found regular publication in POETRY. Near Fine with light vertical creases to a couple of preliminary pages and some fading to spine letters. The dust jacket has some foxing to the spine and to the jacket edges and light soiling. Overall an attractive copy printed on high-quality paper.SIGNED Denise Levertov on the front end paper. This is Levertov's first book a collection of poems and the only one to use the original spelling of her name. This copy belonged to Levertov's former husband Mitchell Goodman. They married in 1947 the year after the publication of this book and divorced in 1975.Laid in are two handwritten letters from Goodman to another person in 1987 concerning the sale of this copy. There's also a fragment of a letter to Goodman who has replied at the bottom of the letter that he would take $150 for the book; a canceled check for that amount is included with the book.Goodman provides some interesting details about this edition writing in a letter dated November 12 1987: "It was published in London by a very good small press when D.L. was 22 or 23 years old. There was a first edition of 750 copies and then no more. Most of the books sold went to English readers libraries etc. Long ago there seem to be very few copies in this country--and none for sale that I've heard of in recent years. I heard a rumor once from an English collector who said the publisher had scrapped a large number of copies that had been damaged while in storage. It seemed to ring true."Goodman further states: "Denise Levertov herself gave me this copy. We're old friends." Goodman's assertion of a 750-copy print run is at variance with the Levertov bibliography compiled by Robert A. Wilson of the Phoenix Book Shop. Wilson says 13042 copies were published on December 2 1946. Wilson A 1. That seems highly unlikely since this was a first book by an unknown author.
