‎Slavery. American Poetry. Thomas Joseph.‎

‎A Poetical Descant on the Primeval and Present State of Mankind; or The Pilgrim's Muse.‎

‎Winchester Va.: J. Foster Printer 1816. First edition. Fragile sheep rubbed but sound; some light foxing and spotting; front joint just a trifle tender; a good sound copy of a moderately crude American book. Small 8vo original sheep red leather label gilt lettering 219 1 pages. An eccentric book-length poem from Elder Joseph Thomas 1791-1835 the wide-ranging charismatic North Carolina itinerant preacher known as the White Pilgrim for his habit of attiring himself in white apparel in all seasons and climes. Thomas includes a fairly lengthy and graphic section here leveled against slavery and its e suggesting those who endorse slavery might "Let them be bound and torn away / From wives and friends to Africa. / Let them be starv'd and beat one year / Then say 'tis right I'll say 'tis queer; / Or whip their wives before their eye-- / Is that all right O no they cry." Thomas also suggests abstaining from the product of slave labor "In sugar works where Negroes toil / A leg and arm they often boil; / They grind them up and mix the sweet / Of all that luxury we eat. / O temp'rate man use not that food / That's stain'd or mix'd with negro blood! / That taste luxur'ous now forego / Which causes human gore to flow." Stoddard & Whitesell 1148; Sabin 63639. Early ink autograph ownership signatures to the front free endpaper and to a rear blank and endpapers. Small tear from the lower margin of one leaf with loss of a few letters but no loss of sense. J. Foster, Printer, unknown books‎

‎American Poetry. Cole Samuel W. editor.‎

‎The Muse; or Flowers of Poetry; a Choice Collection of Favorite Odes Poems Songs Elegies Dirges Epitaphs Epigrams Elegant Extracts &c.‎

‎Cornish Maine: Published and Sold by the Author 1827. First edition. Thin slice from the calf of the upper board; some general rubbing and some browning; a good to very good copy of a pleasantly crude little book in a moderately odd format. How often does one see gathering M for the prelims preceded the subsequent gathering B. 12mo gathered in nines contemporary full calf dark blue morocco label gilt lettering 216 pages. A pleasantly crudely-made anthology largely of English poems though Key's "Star-Spangled Banner" does make an early appearance here. Even the poems on patriotic and peculiarly American reform themes--the visit of Lafayette to America the sale of a negro boy an American Indian speaking to a slave before a planned massacre of the slave owners--seem not only to hail from English sources but to have strange textual variants or errors introduced into their texts. With the printer's slug for John Adams Jr. of Portland on the verso of the title page. Somewhat later ink ownership inscription to the paste-down and a 1914 pencil inscription below that. Free endpapers excised. American Imprints 28543. Published and Sold by the Author, unknown books‎

‎American Poetry. Steam Poets. DeWolfe George Gordon Byron.‎

‎The Capture of Jeff. Davis caption title; with: Songs by DeWolfe the Wandering Poet of New Hampshire . . . "The Last Ditch!" or Davis Booth and Lee & The President who wore his wife's Petticoat caption title.‎

‎Nashua N.H. Byron DeWolfe 1865. First edition of each. One upper corner of the first song sheet town not touching text; some general wear and soiling; in good condition overall. Two broadsides mounted to heavier stock likely the leaf of a scrapbook the first measuring 8 x 4.5 inches the second 7.88 x 4.25 inches. Woodcut vignettes on each. Two ephemeral humorous topical song sheets from the indefatigable George Gordon Byron DeWolfe 1835-1873 the "Wandering Poet of New Hampshire." Per Chapin's Poets of New Hampshire 1883 the Canadian-born DeWolfe "came to the United States about 1855 and commenced the work which he followed until his death namely travelling from state to state from town to town writing verses on people places and popular events. . . . From the rapidity with which he wrote he was called the 'Steam-Machine Poet.'" Indeed DeWolfe could turn his hand with equal versatility to such topics as the capture of Jefferson Davis and his supposed attempt at escape in his wife's dress and the just desserts of Booth and Lee as here to the occasional murder ballad or commemoration of a clam-bake--and could evidently do so with a happy fluidity that was no doubt the envy of many a more sluggish laureate; as DeWolfe notes elsewhere in the colophon to some 1870 mendicant verses he had composed for a blind stone-cutter John Hobart "Mr. H. related some incidents of his life to 'The Wandering Poet' who composed the verses on this sheet in less than two hours and returned to his home in Nashua that afternoon. . . . Verses will be composed on reasonable terms on any subject for any person. All business correspondence will be kept confidential." The first song sheet evidently noted at seven locations on OCLC excluding likely electronic copies the second song sheet at two locations plus presumably a copy at the Library Company of Philadelphia. Fragment mounted on the verso of the leaf of a contemporary woodcut illustration of a crowd of slaves escaping into the Union lines as an African American soldier looks on. Tears to binding holes of two typescript leaves; occasional minor soil or edgewear; occasional pencil notations and corrections; binder worn. Book lightly damp-stained to bottom edge of boards and some leaves spotting/soil to endpapers and few leaves; in Poor dj panels split and damp-stained loss to spine and edges. Average general wear to magazines with occasional chipped edges faint staining and rusted staples; wrappers of one quite foxed. Overall Good to Very Good condition. Binder: 64 leaves most typescript to recto only containing 57 poems. INDIANA POETS: 160 pp. Poetry magazines: various paginations. 2 b/w photographs laid in both ~3-1/2" x 3-1/2". 4to binder 11-1/2" x 9-1/2"; 8vo book and magazines.

The poetry archive of Winona Montgomery Gilliland a minor Indiana poet who garnered some national and local acclaim primarily in the 1930s. The feature item of the archive is a binder of over 50 typescript poems with occasional pencil notations and corrections in what we presume to be Gilliland's hand accompanied by a typed and incomplete List of Publications. Given that several of the poems were typed on the blank verso of her husband's life insurance office stationery it seems likely that these were Mrs. Gilland's personal collection comprised of both published and apparently unpublished poems. Also included is a copy of Indiana Poets: An Anthology of 48 Living Writers New York: Henry Harrison 1935 in which Gilliland is one of the featured 48 writers; 20 issues of various poetry magazines one duplicate containing publications of her poetry; and two b/w photographs one of which is identified as a portrait of the author. Mary Winona Gilliland lived in Indianapolis most of her life graduating from Tudor Hall and then DePauw University before marrying Robert V. Gilliland in 1915. She was published in The American Mercury Poetry Kaleidograph Indiana Poetry Magazine Weird Tales Bozart Westward Better Homes and Gardens Wings and the 1937 issue of American Women Poets among other magazines and was invited to join the Poetry Society of America in 1937. A unique collection of material documenting the literary achievements of a largely forgotten mid-20th century poet. (various) hardcover books‎

‎Cowboy Poetry / Western Americana. Crawford John "Captain Jack" Wallace 1847 1917‎

‎JUST An IMPROMPTU THOUGHT Or TWO. For William & Mrs. I. Schaffer. Midnight July 24th. or 25th. 1916‎

‎Napanoch NY 1916. Pale blue laid linen paper with watermark. Printed blue Yama Farms letterhead typed poem. Fold lines few pin holes to upper corner. VG. Broadside. Printing/type to recto only. 10-15/16" x 8-7-16"

Typed poem with "Copy" noted in manuscript beneath the letterhead though nevertheless presumed original to the occasion. The poem is addressed to William and Mrs. I. Schaffer from "Your Broncho Friend of the Camp and the Trail J.W. Crawford 'Capt. Jack.'" Crawford and the Schaffers apparently met and spent time together at Yama Farms. The poem consists of two octaves and begins "To a pair of Happy Lovers / Whom I met at Yama Farms / Who are dead in love with Lovers / Of Old Mother Nature's charms . . . " We presume that the author is "Poet Scout" John Wallace "Captain Jack" Crawford. Crawford was a soldier and ranger in the West during the Civil War a failed miner a showman in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show until 1877 when he accidentally shot himself in the groin and an eventual lecturer and cowboy poet at events around the country; he died in New York in 1917. Yama Farms was a popular Japanese-inspired resort in Ulster County New York from 1903 to 1938. It hosted among others Henry Ford Thomas Edison John Burroughs Harvey Firestone Rabindranath Tagore and many other industrialists financiers influential members of New York society literati etc. unknown books‎
