‎Londini: Gul. Bulmer & Soc. 1802. 8vo 21.5 cm 8.4". 2 130 pp.; illus. <br><br>First Forster edition and first Bulmer printing thereof: a handsome example of the ever-popular songs of Anacreon edited and prepared by Edward Forster 1769–1828 based largely on Barnes' influential text. This production made excellent use of the Greek font cut for printer William Bulmer by William Martin who had trained under Baskerville; Martin's distinctive sans serif type was designed without ligatures. => Lavinia Banks Forster the editor's wife supplied the illustrations — the elegantly printed text is ornamented with 20 copper-engraved vignettes. The Annual Review & History of Literature for 1803 described the resulting volume as an "exquisite specimen of typographical skill" while Dibdin called it an "elegant work" that "confers great credit on the printer."<br>    Binding: Contemporary red straight-grained morocco modestly tooled using a single binder's tool for all decoration — a single rule. It is used to frame the boards create the spine compartments decorate the board edges and enliven the turn-ins. Very interesting green marbled endpapers perhaps "arsenic green" All edges gilt.<br>    Provenance: Early 19th-century ownership signature on front fly-leaf of Robert Harry Hughes Jesus College Oxford; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard small booklabel "AHA" at rear. <br>    <br>    Dibdin I 266–67; NSTC A1179; Schweiger I 25–26. Bound as above; darkening to spine and small adjoining area on boards and along top area of boards; joints and edges rubbed. ‎Anakreontos Teiou mele praefixo commentario quo poëtae genus traditur et bibliotheca Anacreonteia adumbratur. Parma in aedibus Palatinis Typis Bodonianis 1791. 16mo in 4s 15 x 11 cm. With a small engraved portrait of Anacreon in a roundel on the title-page a small engraved portrait of the dedicatee J. N. de Azara in a roundel on the dedication page. Part of the text is set in Greek type. Contemporary gold-tooled green morocco with the title lettered in gold on the spine gold-tooled board edges and turn-ins shiny pink endpapers with a frame of small silver leaves mounted on the pastedowns.‎

‎4 CXVIII 2 111 1 pp.Beautiful copy of Anacreon's poems printed in Greek and Latin capitals that Bodoni had designed and cut especially for his Anacreon editions. The first of these splendid editions was printed in 1785. Our copy is one of 150 printed. A first 8vo edition was printed by Bodoni in 1784 but the 1785 and 1791 editions are by far the most gorgeous and from a philological viewpoint the best. Brooks no. 421 furthermore mentions a 16mo-edition also printed in 1791. The book aroused the admiration of the famous bibliographer Dibdin who wrote in his classic bibliography Greek and Latin classics p. 265: "The Bodoni edition of 1785 and 1791 is printed in capital letters and more elegant and exquisitely finished productions cannot be conceived".Our copy comes from the library of the Comte D. Boutourlin 1763-1829 a Russian soldier military historian politician and librarian of the Imperial Russian Library. He was one of the most outstanding book collectors of 19th-century Russia and he formed an important library which was unfortunately destroyed during the burning of Moscow in 1812. His second large collection of which a catalogue was published in 1831 in 200 copies was formed during his retirement in Florence. It contained 244 important early manuscripts 964 15th-century books many of which were unrecorded a very complete Bodoni collection and other outstanding items 7929 in all. The book was later owned by the Comte Chandon de Briailles whose bookplate is pasted on first flyleaf: "Au Conte Chandon de Briailles". This is most likely Raoul Chandon de Briailles 1850-1908 historian and wine merchant founder of the Chandon de Briailles mark of champagne part of whose rich library was bequeathed to the Médiathèque at Épernay. With the large armorial bookplate of Comte Chandon D. Boutourlin on the verso of the first free flyleaf and the bookplate of Comte de Briailles on the recto of the second free flyleaf. The binding shows very slight signs of wear internally only very slightly foxed. Otherwise in very good condition.l Brooks 422; De Lama II p. 66; Giani Cat. p. 40 no. 17; Palaia & Moscatelli 141; Quand la simplicité devient art 46; cf. Catalogue de la Bibliothèque de son Exc. ‎ANACREON.‎

Brunet, I, 254 ; Barbier, III, 924.

‎Anacreon. Forster, Edward (editor). Forster, Lavinia Banks (illustrator)‎

‎WOMAN ILLUSTRATOR 1802. Anacreontis Odaria ad textus Barnesiani fidem emendata‎

‎London: B.R. Howlette / John Murray 1813. Second edition. Good. 8vo. 2 130 pp. Printed in Greek throughout on fine paper. Contemporary English red diced russia calf rubbed and worn tooled in blind outer frame of gilt palmette rolls all edges gilt drab endpapers. Front endpaper waterstained; second blank leaf with paper flaw; outer margins of final pages darkened from turn-ins. With faults and priced accordingly. THE ONLY KNOWN ILLUSTRATIONS BY MRS. LAVINIA FORSTER. Our copy bears learned MS annotations in Greek and Latin. <br /> <br /> Beautifully printed in a Greek font created especially for William Bulmer by William Martin. Dibdin described the 1802 first edition as an "elegant work that confers great credit on the printer." Our copy belongs to the second edition which was printed in the same Greek font and retains the 20 fine engraved head- and tailpiece vignettes designed by Lavinia Banks Forster 1774-1858 wife of the present editor Edward Foster. Two of the vignettes are signed in absolutely miniscule lettering "Publ. by W. Miller Old Bond Street 1802." <br /> <br /> Mrs. Lavinia Banks Forster was the only child of the sculptor Thomas Banks and his wife Elizabeth. She married the Reverend Edward Forster in 1799 and from 1815 lived in Paris with her husband who was at that time Chaplain to the British Embassy. There they provided a social center for artists. Her lively and fully accomplished illustrations for her husband's Anacreon represent the only published examples by her that we have been able to trace. <br /> <br /> "Few of Anacreon’s works survive but those that do focus on wine love homosexual and heterosexual and the overall pleasures of the legendary Roman symposium. Anacreon used various techniques in his writings including self-deprecation and irony. The collection of miscellaneous Greek poems from the Hellenistic Age and beyond known as the Anacreontea was 'mistakenly labeled' with Anacreon’s name" see William and Mary Law Library online exhibit. <br /> <br /> The annotator of our copy was one George Houstoun on title: "Ex libris Georgii Houstoun." Given the lavishness of the binding and the fact that the book itself was printed on fine paper perhaps this individual was George Houstoun 1743-1815 4th Laird of Johnstone Renfrew Scotland. Subsequently signed in pencil inside the lower cover: "R. Bradford." <br /> <br /> Dibdin Greek and Latin Classics vol. I pp. 266-267 1802 edition. See DNB under Edward Forster. B.R. Howlette / John Murray unknown‎
