ANAKREON UND SAPPHO.
F. Bohn Lubeck: 1800 1800 pp 186 Engraved title page. Damp stained. Original boards. Spine taped. "Platos praise of the poets Sappho and Anacreon Phaedrus 235c is a sincere tribute to their vivid presentations of the shock of love." Sappho's poetry centers on passion and love for various personages and genders. The word "lesbian" derives from the name of the island of her birth Lesbos; her name is also the origin of its less common synonym sapphic. The narrators of many of her poems speak of infatuations and love sometimes requited sometimes not for various women but descriptions of physical acts between women are few. First edition of this influential German translation. SMALL BOX 8 Language: eng. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. F. Bohn, Lubeck: 1800 hardcover

Anacreon; Sapphus: Valentinis, Petrus Aloysius (Ed.)
Odae Anacreontis et Sapphus / latine et poetice redditae a Petro Aloysio Valentini. & Nobili viro Joseph Senni de agrorum cultura Benemerenti P.A. Valentini.
1843. Florentiae : apud Guillelmum Piatti 1843 4° XVI 179 pp.; 11 pp. feiner Pappband. First Edition! Bilingual Edition - Greek text with Latin version opposite. Anacreon c. 575 - c. 495 BC was a Greek lyric poet notable for his drinking songs and erotic poems. Later Greeks included him in the canonical list of Nine Lyric Poets. Anacreon wrote all of his poetry in the ancient Ionic dialect. Like all early lyric poetry it was composed to be sung or recited to the accompaniment of music usually the lyre. Anacreon's poetry touched on universal themes of love infatuation disappointment revelry parties festivals and the observations of everyday people and life Sappho c. 630 - c. 570 BC was an Archaic Greek poet from Eresos or Mytilene on the island of Lesbos.a Sappho is known for her lyric poetry written to be sung while accompanied by music. In ancient times Sappho was widely regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets and was given names such as the "Tenth Muse" and "The Poetess". Most of Sappho's poetry is now lost and what is extant has mostly survived in fragmentary form; only the Ode to Aphrodite is certainly complete. As well as lyric poetry ancient commentators claimed that Sappho wrote elegiac and iambic poetry. Three epigrams formerly attributed to Sappho are extant but these are actually Hellenistic imitations of Sappho's style. unknown
