Women Empowerment in Garhwal Himalayas Constraints and Prospects [Hardcover]
This book is an outcome of a National Seminar organized by the Department of Political Science, HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar under the UGC-SAP-DRS programme during November 19-20, 2007 on "Women Empowerment in Garhwal Himalayas : Constraints and Prospects". The objective of this book is to explore the challenges and constraints which hamper women's participation in development programmes as a decision maker and identity as a group. Women of Garhwal Himalayas play a major role in managing natural resources, agriculture and economy and they also suffer from the environmental mismanagement, yet they are neither consulted nor is their plight taken into account by the strategists and planners while making policies. In view of women's contribution towards the society and economy, the purpose of this book is to highlight the situation of women empowerment; realities and its impact on socio-economic justice in general and in particular to the Garhwal Himalayas. Actually there are innumerable issues of the women of Garhwal Himalayas, on which policy decisions and concrete actions need to be taken to ensure full participation and empowerment of the women. This book consists of the papers presented during the seminar in which the authors have suggested the ways and means through which the women can face the environmental, social, and economic challenges and use the clauses of empowerment for their betterment in development programmes and policies. This book also examines how despite poverty, poor health, socio-economic and educational status, women of Garhwal Himalayas are playing a vital role for the society. It also highlights the social, economic, institutional and functional constraints that impair the functioning of women in the policies and development programmes. It is hoped that this book would be helpful to the scholars, development workers, NGO's and policy planners to encourage rural women's empowerment and participation in development programmes. Gender and Migration in Southern Europe : Women on the Move
The important role women play in the process of migration to the Western bloc, and in particular to Southern Europe where they often find jobs in the domestic service, tourist or sex industries, has been increasingly recognized. This timely book provides essential new insights into the forms of migration and the impact of gender relations on the migration and accommodation process, and also raises general conceptual issues about ways of understanding migration in a global context. At a time when all the member states of the European Union have called for a reduction in immigration in response to its steady growth, the urgency of the topic is apparent. Contributors examine the possible legal, social and economic problems that increased immigration may produce, including: female migration and its relation to changing gender relations in the country of migration; different forms of exclusion faced by male and female migrants; working conditions and status; migrant networks; and women's role in reproducing and maintaining ethnic culture. This book will be essential reading for courses in migration, nationalism, Mediterranean and area studies, gender studies and a range of social science courses. It will also be of use to policy makers and those interested in European developments. INCLUDES Introduction: Women on the Move in Southern Europe Floya Anthias and Gabriella Lazaridis /Metaphors of Home: Gendering New Migrations to southern Europe Floya Anthias /Filipino and Albanian Women Migrant Workers in Greece: Multiple Layers of Oppression Gabriella Lazaridis /The Making of Periphractic Spaces: The Case of Albanian Undocumented Female Migrants in the Sex Industry of Athens Iordannis Psimmenos /Female Migrants in Italy: Coping in a Country of New Migration Victoria Chell /Migrant Women in Italy: National Trends and Local Perspectives Marina Orsini-Jones and Francesca Gattullo /Organizing Domestic Workers in Italy: The Challenge of Gender, Class and Ethnicity Jacqueline Andall /Female Birds of Passage: Leaving and Settling in Spain Natalia Ribas-Mateos /The Position and Status of Migrant Women in Spain Angeles Escrivyy /Trading Intimacy for Liberty: British Women on the Costa del Sol Karen O'Reilly .Index Book
