‎Durchgehend mit meist farbigen Abbildungen versehen. The work of German-American photographer Evelyn Hofer (1922?2009) is characterized by her single-minded creative drive and dedication to recording the essentials of her subjects. Hofer portraits her vis-à-vis?not only people, but also landscapes and interiors?well beyond the idea of the snapshot, and with great clarity and atmospheric intensity. Hofer spent months in the cities she photographed for her books of the 1950s and ?60s, published with renowned authors such as Mary McCarthy and V. S. Pritchett. In titles such as New York Proclaimed (1965) and Dublin, A Portrait (1967) Hofer combines portraits, city and country views, still lifes and larger interior shots to manifest complex images of these metropolises. From this starting point Begegnungen / Encounters explores the multifaceted idea of the "portrait? throughout Hofer?s oeuvre?be it in series on New York, Dublin and Washington, images of artists and their ateliers, selected photo-essays for magazines, her extensive projects "People of Soglio? and "Basque People?, as well as till now unseen New York photos of Marlene Dietrich?s hangar and Andy Warhol?s Factory (Verlagsinfo Steidl Homepage).‎

The joint proprietors of a children's clothing shop, Mary (1699-1741) and Ann (1701-1771) Hogarth, wee sisters to the famed William Hogarth (1697-1764). "in his 1730 trade card for his sisters, you sense he is somewhat bemused by the subject he portrays. A youth and his family are gathered round and appear to be engaged in a bit of drama, with arms gesturing. The gentleman is wearing a long coat with turned back cuffs and the indication of fancy stitching at button holes and pockets. The sisters sold "ready made frocks?stript Dimity & Flanel Waistcoats." A coat hangs in the background and what appear to be vest pieces or patterns are on the table to the right. You can just make out Hogarth's name in the lower left, as well as that of his frequent collaborator, engraver Thomas Cook. "?silkdamask.org Heal, London Tradesmen's Cards, 1925. p. 76.‎

"Nadianna Jesup a pregnant young photographer from rural Georgia is visiting Mayley a village in Yorkshire England on an arts grant when she discovers a burned corpse floating in a river. No one including historian Gale Grayson Nadianna's companion on the trip believes her except for a local religious group that thinks she has witnessed a vision from God. Strange events surrounding the old mill that Nadianna and Gale are documenting bring to light tensions among some of the colorful inhabitants of the town including Chalice Hibbert a six-foot-seven mute; her employer potter Olivia Markham; and Gerald Thornsby a thief-turned-preacher who opposes Olivia's efforts to turn the abandoned mill into an artist's mall. In this her latest mystery featuring Gale Grayson Holbrook The Grass Widow intersperses her contemporary tale with excerpts from the tragic diary of a Luddite named Michael Dodd. This psychological mystery.succeeds in evoking the bleakness of the depressed mill town and in portraying the family bonds that drive the characters to acts of desperation." -- Publishers Weekly. ‎ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ETIQUETTE: What to Write, What to Do, What to Wear, What to Say; A Book of Manners for Everyday Use. Revised and enlarged edition.‎

‎500 p. + Photo illustrations including several in color. 8vo. 8.5 x 7.75" Attractive original decorated full cloth binding. A wonderful record of proper behavior for the "upper classes" - just as World War One was threatening that way of life. Among the broad subjects are: introductions; dinners; table manners; engagements; weddings; balls & dances; luncheons; teas; theater and opera; house parties; musicales; garden parties; funerals; christenings; bachelor hospitalities; servants; correspondence; travel (including a nice bit on shipboard behavior); sports and games; etc. This edition is especially interesting because it includes photographs (one in color) of the enormously famous dance team Irene and Vernon Castle (later immortalized in the movies by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers). "The Castles were undoubtedly the most famous ballroom dancers of their day, and while they did not invent social dancing, they were among the first to make a career of it. Vernon was tall and slightly built, and Irene willowy, boyish, and yet thoroughly feminine. Together they were a breath of air for a world stuck in the stodgy Edwardian mode. And their brief, almost incandescent career stands as a metaphor of an entire glittering, fragile world soon to be shattered by the horror of world war." - From paragonragtime. ETIQ 1‎
