Due opere unite in 8° (cm 12 x 19,7), pp 156, 70. Esemplare in buone condizioni, recante alla sguardia l'ex libris inciso in rame, e la firma, di (Benjamin-Henry) Constant de Rebecque (1767-1830), scrittore preromantico ("Adolphe"), posto "sugli altar" e "nella polvere" da Napoleone, celebre per gli scritti sul modello del liberalismo inglese. Il volume racchiude due libelli anonimi, entrambi in prima traduzione francese, firmate dal rabbino "Nathan Ben Saddi" (traduzione ad opera dello scrittore sovversivo Fougeret de Monbron) e da "Kemuel Saddi", in realtà il poligrafo e libraio inglese Robert Dodsley e Christoph Gottlieb Richter (m. 1774), A. di altre opere del genere sotto lo pseudonimo di "Dathan". Alla seconda, manca nel nostro esemplare la "Continuation de la Chronique..", non sempre presente anche nelle copie censite nelle biblioteche. L'anonimato, e lo stile vagamente orientaleggiante o "biblico", sul modello delle coeve più celebri "Lettres persanes", permettono ad entrambi gli A. di scrivere animata parodia, assai poco lusinghiera, dei sovrani inglesi, e delle vicende e protagonisti delle guerre di Federico II di Prussia, la Prima e Seconda Guerra di Slesia (1740-'42 e '44-'45). In 16 (cm 9,5 x 14), pp. (18) + 471 + (1) di errata. Pagine rifilate ai margini. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena rimontata. Traduzione italiana, curata dal messinese Domenico Janno', dell'opera pubblicata anonima, ma scritta in francese dal Padre gesuita Bohours (cfr. Melzi, III, 1859, p. 166) in cui l'A. fa dialogare, in una prosa scorrevole ed elegante, due Francesi a passeggio su una spiaggia fiamminga. I due decretano la superiorita' degli scrittori moderni rispetto ai classici, criticano le lingue italiana e spagnola sostenendo come queste abbiano mostrato le loro lacune morali e retoriche. Il toscano, con il suo abuso di superlativi, si e' rivelato una lingua di smargiassi e ciarlatani. Si tratat di un'accusa che numerosi critici, fra gli altri i Gesuiti del Collegio romano, rivolgevano alla scuola dei poeti e prosatori italiani. I due menzionano anche Gracian, autore spagnolo, e discettano fra la chiarezza e l'oscurita' dello stile, fra la norma del "buon senso" letterario e l'eccezione del sublime che si fa beffe dello stile ordinario. Bohours propende per il primato della chiarezza in cui anche i grammatici di Port-Royal vedevano la vocazione naturale e il privilegio esclusivo del Francese. Contemporary limp vellum with ms. title to spine. Very rare polemical work, printed throughout in Arabic and Latin, that aims to compare and contrast Christian and Muslim scripture and doctrines. Dedicated to Cardinal Barberini. The editor Dominicus (1585-1670) taught Arabic at the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide since 1636 and collaborated on their Bible project. His magnum opus, one of the first literal Quran translations, was not rediscovered and published until 1883. In 1636 he published an Arabic grammar (the first publication of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide press to use Arabic type); in 1639 he would produce a dictionary of vernacular Arabic. Four years in the Middle East had convinced him that a missionary must before everything else know the vernacular language (cf. Fück, p. 78). The present work was considered lost quite recently by Antonio García Masegosa in his study "Germán de Silesia, Interpretatio Alcorani Litteralis, Parte I: La traducción latina" (Madrid, 2009): "Por la misma época, publicó un tratado religioso en árabe y en latín titulado Antitheses fidei, que se encuentra perdido en la actualidad, o que al menos no ha podido ser localizado para este trabajo" (p. 14). - Marked brownstaining throughout with waterstain to upper corner. Edizione originale, emissione formato cartolina. CON DEDICA Eccellente esemplare viaggiato il 22 giugno 1917 e indirizzato dal compositore Menotti Saltamerenda al capitano Guglielmo Fagioli «comandante la 9a compagnia 16° fanteria | Zona Guerra»; elegante firma autografa del compositore. Rarissimo spartito che recupera l’inno garibaldino attualizzandolo all’occasione della prima guerra mondiale. Dedicatoria al colonnello Nicola De Maria del 51° Reggimento Fanteria. Fu pubblicato nel 1917 dalla ditta musicale Ricordi di Milano nel formato classico dello spartito in 4°, autocopertinato di dieci pagine; quindi in questo formato cartolina dove l’intestazione è riprodotta come in facsimile di autografo e lo spartito è ridotto a pura voce. Si tratta dell’esordio assoluto del pittore futurista umbro Gerardo Dottori, che compone un bel quadro puntinista dove già si intravede l’attenzione maniacale alle curvature di luci e colori. Anche il perugino Menotti Saltamerenda (1893-1974; nome di battaglia: SALTA) fece parte del gruppo futurista umbro, «che, di lì a poco, sarebbe entrato in sintonia con le tradizioni garibaldine ancora vive nell’ambiente perugino per la presenza del comando di una Divisione come la “Alpi” (erede diretta del corpo dei Cacciatori delle Alpi, costituito nel 1859 da Garibaldi. Quando cominciarono a spirare venti di guerra, a partire dall’estate del 1914, gli aderenti al gruppo futurista dettero fiato alle corde nazionaliste e interventiste. Il musicista Menotti Saltamernda compose […] “Obbedisco”, contributo diretto all’esaltazione della brigata garibaldina, il cui spartito venne illustrato da Dottori con un’immagine di Garibaldi, colto di profilo e immerso in una veduta montana tra bagliori di luce, divendendo, poi, anche cartolina di propaganda per le truppe» (Duranti). Far from the classic zoomorphic codes usually used by caricaturists, Alfred Dreyfus is associated here with the hydra, a mythical creature emblematic of evil. Beyond this symbolism, the choice of a monster with sprawling and perpetually regenerating heads gives the image a strong anti-Semitic charge, exceeding that of the Dreyfus Affair. Ironically, it is the term hydra that will be used after the Second World War to describe the anti-Semitic resurgence of our modern society. Transverse folds, some marginal foxing not affecting the image. Circulated between October 1899 and December 1900 in a France set ablaze by the Dreyfus Affair, these immense colour portraits are the work of Victor Lenepveu, who announced the publication of 150 and then 200 drawings, before finally producing only around fifty. Despite the 1881 law on the freedom of press allowing the dissemination of a politically subversive image, the publication of this nightmarish pantheon was interrupted by order of the Ministry of the Interior. The fragility of the paper and the imposing size of these very violent posters, as well as their almost immediate seizure by the police, contributed to the disappearance of these caricatures which strongly left a mark on public opinion. These horreurs were widely promoted by anti-Semitic newspapers that announced a fantasised print of 300,000 copies, thus insinuating the success of anti-Semitic ideas in the population. On 1st October 1899, L'Intransigeant announced the publication of the Musée des horreurs in its columns: "Un dessinateur de beaucoup d'esprit, au coup de crayon d'un comique intense, M. V. Lenepveu, a eu l'heureuse idée d'inaugurer une série de portraits des vendus les plus célèbres de la tourbe dreyfusarde. Le titre de cette série «?Musée des Horreurs?» est suffisamment suggestif et indique bien ce qu'il promet. [...] C'est la maison Hayard qui mettra en vente, à partir d'aujourd'hui, le numéro 1 de cette désopilante série." "An artist of great spirit, with an intense comical pencil stroke, M. V. Lenepveu, had the happy idea of inaugurating a series of portraits of the most famous sellouts of the Dreyfusard rabble. The title of this series "?Musée des Horreurs" is sufficiently suggestive and is a good indicator of what it promises. [...] It is Maison Hayard that will put up for sale, from today, issue number 1 of this hilarious series." First a peddler then a bookseller-publisher, Napoléon Hayard (known as Léon Hayard) specialised in the marketing of anti-Dreyfusard and anti-Semitic ephemera and advertisements. Today, however, copies in good condition of these pamphlet caricatures, which contributed to the social and political divide of France, are very rare. Published in the booming written press - at the same time as Émile Zola's famous "J'accuse?!" - these propaganda materials had a significant impact on the younger generations and preceded the ideological violence of the 20th century. Ashley did indeed reduce the price of punch - from 8 shillings for punch made from a quart of arrack to 6 shillings - but his great innovation was to offer punch in smaller portions in servings as small as two ounces. These small servings made to order for the customer were the precursor to the modern cocktail. <br /> <br /> This trade card is engraved by Ashley's friend Thomas Worlidge 1700-1766 dubbed "the English Rembrandt" who also engraved portraits of Ashley's wife and one Mrs. Graywood the bar-keep at the London Punch-House. (mm. 159x95), 2 volumi, p. pelle coeva (con abras.), dorso a cordoni con decoraz. e tit. oro, tagli rossi, pp. CXII,393,(3); (2),429,(3); con una grande carta geografica della Persia, più volte ripieg. Una lunga prefazione e un “Abrégé de l’histoire des Sophy” (titolo dei re di Persia), introduce questa storia dell’ultima rivoluzione persiana del 1728, opera del gesuita e scrittore francese Jean-Antoine Du Cerceau (1670-1730) e che si basa sulle memorie del Padre Jude Krusinski (gesuita polacco che aveva soggiornato a lungo a Ispahan). Pagine ingiallite e qualche uniforme lieve arross. per la qualità della carta, altrimenti buon esemplare.

(mm. 179x123), 2 volumi, cartoncino rustico coevo (con aloni), tit. ms. al dorso, pp. (4),183; 100; insegne allegoriche xilografate ai frontespizi, con 1 bella tavola all’antiporta inc. in rame e 1 “nuova carta del Regno di Persia fatta in Amsterdam per Isak Tirion”, pure inc. in rame e più volte ripieg. Nella prefazione si legge: “questa storia non descrive solamente la di lui vita.. ma darò un’idea dell’ampiezza del Regno di Persia, della sua situazione, della sua potenza deì suoi abitatori, de’ costumi diversi e della religione. Farò poscia un compendio della maggior parte de’ Re che li hanno governati e narrerò le rivoluzioni che sono avvenute in questo regno e quelle che hanno posto il mio Guerriero sul trono de’ Sofi (1736). Dalla “vita” di Thamas-Kouli-Kan (o Nadir Shah: 1688-1747) il ns. storico arriva fino alla guerra da lui dichiarata al Gran Mogol”. "Prima edizione italiana". Cfr. Morazzoni, p 238 - Melzi,II, p. 51 indica come editore “Gio. Battista Pasquali” e come autore dell’opera M. Frasses” - Cioranescu,I, p. 714 attribuisce quest’opera a Du Cerceau. Buon esemplare con barbe.

Esemplare internamente in buone condizioni; . Edizione "iouxte la coppie imprimée à Paris" del Morel Tipografo Regio, della relazione degli Stati Generali convocati a Parigi tra gennaio e agosto 1593, in piene guerre ugonotte, per designare il nuovo re di Francia, promotore Charles de Lorraine duca de Mayenne (m. 1611). Il testo dell'opera è improntato a fervida apologia del cattolicesimo in opposizione al dilagare del protestantesimo: il candidato favorito in gioco è il re di Navarra Enrico IV, che in luglio abiura la fede protestante ("Parigi val bene una messa"). Opera attribuita al Du Laurens da Barbier ((T. 1, col. 1016), e Hauser, H. (Sources du Christianisme de France 3051); al Mayenne, da STC French 1470-1600, p. 103. Esemplari censiti in COPAC e CCFr, non in SBN.

Bella biografia del canonista belga Van-Espen (Lovanio 1646 – Amersfoort 1728) che fu professore all'università di Lovanio e considerato il più importante rappresentante del movimento giansenista in Europa.

Un paio di note manoscritte. Dotta opera che, descrivendo minuziosamente i dettati della Lega di Cambrai, ci informa sulla riduzione territoriale della Repubblica di venezia. Edizione originale ed unica in lingua italiana. Opera che fu messa all'indice dei libri proibiti. Cfr. Melzi, II, 49-50.

Prima edizione di questo violento pamphlet contro Delille, accusato di essere stato un controrivoluzionario, un intrigante emigrato oltre ad un mediocre poeta plagiario.
