Two Panoramic Photographs of the First Cavalry New York National Guard and Their Camp at McAllen Texas
McAllen: Photo. by Murff & Robinson 1916. Very good. Two panoramic photographs measuring 8 x 28 and 8 x 26.5 inches. Rolled. A couple of short closed tears and small perforations otherwise minor wear and soiling. Two detailed panoramic photographs that depict the First Cavalry Regiment of the New York National Guard one unit of the 15000 guardsmen from the state that were sent to garrison the Rio Grande in South Texas during the Border War with Mexican revolutionaries and Pershing's Punitive Expedition against Pancho Villa. The New Yorkers were stationed at inadequate parched camps in Mission McAllen and Pharr. The slightly larger of the two images here shows the camp of the First Cavalry at McAllen with field tents and temporary camp buildings on the left and the regiment's allotment of horses tethered together at right. The second images shows the unit on parade being reviewed by General Frederick Funston the commander of the border garrisons. The photos are each captioned in the negative and dated August 28 1916 and October 1 1916 respectively. Scarce images of New York's encampment in Texas during the Border War. Vernacular Photograph Album Kept by D. Watson of the 8th United States Cavalry During the Texas Border War
Various locations in Texas 1918. Very good. Fifteen leaves illustrated with fifty-five mounted photographs and a few ephemeral clippings identifying locations. Oblong octavo. Contemporary black cloth string-tied. Light soiling to covers. Minor wear to some photographs but overall a handsome selection. A unique collection of vernacular photographs collected by a soldier in the 8th U.S. Cavalry identified simply as D. Watson serving in southwest Texas during the Mexican Border War. The first two pictures emanate from Quartermaster Training Camp in Jacksonville Florida. This is followed by one photo from Barron Field in Everman Texas. The remaining photographs document Watson's time in Ruidosa Texas an unincorporated Texas-Mexico border town in Presidio County about a hundred miles from Terlingua. Here Watson includes photographs of himself and other soldiers and their horses posed in front of old stone structures in orange groves amongst canyons in front of an automobile and more with images of Mexican adobes a wagon advertising an "electric light company" the cavalry preparing their horses scenes of the wilds of southwest Texas and the E.H. Carlton company store. E.H. Carlton was also a principal in the Carlton Van Loan Company an oil speculation firm active in the 1920s. The 'Historique' document dated 'Froidmont le 25 septembre 1944' Tournai Belgium; the other two items without place or date. A scarce survival providing a mass of valuable information written during wartime with nothing else about this section of the Belgian resistance having been discovered. All three documents in fair condition on aged and lightly-worn paper. ONE: 'Historique de la Section 802 depuis ses debuts.' Typed document. 3pp. 4to. Rust staining from paperclip at head of first page. Type indentation indicates that this is an original document not a mimeograph. Giving an account of Section 802 from September 1941 to 9 September 1944. Sub-headings: 'PERIODE SECRETE D'ORGANISATION' with 'FORMATION DES ESCOUADES' and 'FORMATION du service sanitaire'; 'ACTIVITE SPECIALE' with 'Aide aux réfractaires' and 'Détention d'explosifs'; 'PERIODE DE SABOTAGE'; 'PERIODE DE GUERILLAS: PRELIMINAIRES' with 'OPERATIONS DE LA S.802'. Filled with facts and names as the opening indicates: 'September 1941: PARENT Marcel Ravitaillement en matériel sanitaire de tout les postes de secours de Tournai. Estafette pour COISNE Amédée sic. Agent de liaison avec Bruxelles et Mons pour la remise de documents Renseignements de toute nature à COISNE Amédé. Deux fois par mois voyage à Bruxelles pour prendre plusieurs centaines de "Libre Belgique" pour la distribution à Tournai. Soustraction de documents et photos chez le rexiste sic VAN ROY Eté disparu le 10 novembre 1942. Après l'arrestation de plusieurs membres des groupes de Tournai la S.802 fut divisée Amédé Coisne et LERICHE Louis regroupèrent la Section et avec PARENT Marcel formèrent une nouvelle section à Froidmont.' Opérations au bois DELNESTE à PIC au VENT. Un paysan signale un allemand avec mitraillette dans le bois. Une auto blindée anglaise mitraille le bois. Attaque du bois par trois hommes de la S.802 et soutenus par cinq anglais venus en renfort avec une auto mitrailleuse. Original Illustrated Paper Wrappers with red illustration of a sinking ship from the infamous May 3rd 1945 bombing of the Thielbek, Cap Arcona, and Deutschland. 8vo. 35 pages ; 21 cm. In Dutch. Title translates to, Neuengamme: The Disaster in the Bend of Lubeck. The Neuengamme concentration camp, was a German concentration camp, established in 1938 by the SS near the village of Neuengamme in the Bergedorf district of Hamburg, Germany. It was operated by the Nazis from 1938 to 1945. Over that period an estimated 106, 000 prisoners were held at Neuegamme and at its subcamps
(Wikipedia, 2016) British forces arrived on May 4, 1945. In early May 1945, the SS loaded some 9, 000-10, 000 prisonersmost of them evacuated from Neuengamme and its subcampsonto three ships anchored in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Neustadt in Schleswig-Holstein. Some 7, 000 lost their lives when the British attacked two of the ships in the course of a raid on the harbor on May 3. The Thielbek, carrying about 2, 000 prisoners, sank quickly. The Cap Arcona, carrying more than 4, 500 prisoners, burned and capsized during the attack. Only about 600 prisoners from both ships survived. (US Holocaust Museum) . Near Fine with light creasing light wear and toning.<p>Nisei is a Japanese term used in North and South American meaning "second generation" specifically referring to ethnically Japanese children born in the Americas to Japanese-born parents who immigrated there. This pamphlet details the heroic acts of the two Japanese-American combat units in World War II the 442nd Combat Team and the 100th Battalion. A scarce pamphlet issued by the War Relocation Authority the American governmental agency overseeing the mass internment of Japanese-Americans often mentioning relocation camps making note of soldiers who volunteered directly from them to join the US Army. Very rare pamphlet published during the European wars against Turkey with a frontispiece portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Léopold I 1640-1705 Archduke of Austria and King of Bohemia and Hungary. He succeeded his father Ferdinand III in 1657 and immediately had to fight against the Turks in the Great Turkish War also known as the War of the Holy League 1683-1699. This war finally led to the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699.This work gives directions and arrangements for ritual processions that the Turkish Sultan Suleiman III ordered after his victories during the so-called Holy Wars against the Christians. It is of great importance for our understanding of the problematic Turkish-European relations during the 17th century especially as an interesting example of counter-propaganda. One of Suleiman IIIs directions presented in the book for example ordered that one Christian slave or one Jew was to be killed every fifteen minutes as part of the procession. Copies of this document were sent by the War Office to the officers commanding the various corps the Secretary of State considering that it would 'assist them in preparing Regulations for the government of the Corps under their Command'. For a full account of the subject see Hugh Cunningham's 'The Volunteer Force: A Social and Political History 1859-1908' 1975. The cover page has in its top left-hand corner: 'V General No. 469' and carries a table of contents. Preceding the rules is a page headed 'WAR OFFICE 10th August 1859' giving a list of the twelve committee members preceded by the statement: 'PROCEEDINGS of a COMMITTEE assembled by Order of the Secretary of State for War for the purpose of drafting model Rules and Regulations for the government of Volunteer Corps when not on actual Service and subject to Military discipline.' In the list that follows the President of the Committee is named as 'VISCOUNT RANELAGH South Middlesex Rifles' and the first three members are: 'EARL SPENCER Althorp Rifles. MAJOR CLIFFORD Victoria Rifles. MR. J. H. ORDE Yarmouth Rifles.' The 24 rules follow over three pages the last page paginated 6 and include: '1. THE Corps having been raised under the Act 44 Geo. This supply will raise the aggregate issue to 50 per cent. on the effective strength of the force; . At a later period I shall be prepared to issue a third instalment of arms of the same pattern as the 50 per cent. now granted. And I hope to be in a position in the course of next summer to supply the short Rifle with Sword Bayonet to a limited extent in exchange for the long one at present issued.' He ends with a list of 'the amount of ammunition for effective members to be issued at cost price on the requisition of the Commanding Officers'. Undated. The original documents dating from between 28 July 1914 and 2 January 1915. Folio 38 pp; and 4to 22 pp. Trade source stated that this material was found in a file marked "War Office" suggesting official file copies. All documents clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged paper. All foreign documents translated into English. The main documents are Sir John French's Despatch on the Retreat from Mons 7 September 1914 folio 10 pp; French's Despatch on the Battle of the Marne 17 September 1914 folio 5 pp; French's Despatch on the Battle of the Aisne 8 October 1914 folio 12 pp; Joffre's General Instruction No. 1 8 August 1914 folio 4 pp. The other documents are: two letters from the Czar to the German Emperor and a reply by him all three dating from July 1914; an instruction from Sazanof the Russian Minister for Foreign Affairs to certain of the country's ambassadors and a letter from the German Imperial Chancellor to the German Ambassador at Vienna both dating from July 1914; two letters from Sir Edward Grey to Sir F. Villiers in Brussels and to the German and French governments a letter from Sir Arthur Nicholson to Grey and two letters from the German Imperial Chancellor to the ambassadors at St Petersburg and Paris all five of the last documents dating from July 1914; a German Army Order 22 for 23 August 1914; eight letters from Sir John French to Lord Kitchener and two replies by Kitchener all dating from August 1914; three documents by Joffre including General Instructions No. 7 all dating from September 1914; a telephone message from General Clergerie to Joffre; and finally a letter from the First Lord to French January 1915. Tsingtao Qingdao during the Second Sino-Japanese War 1937-1945. Ten long Autograph Letters Signed from Malcolm H. Young English agent to his sister Celia describing conditions during Japanese occupation.
Three from 1937 18 January 28 November and 10 December; seven from 1938 13 20 and 27 February 6 March 7 April 6 May and 13 November. All addressed from ‘P.O. Box 286. Tsingtao. China / via Siberia’. A good well-written correspondence painting a good picture of the day-to-day life of an English expatriate in the occupied city. Letters are signed ‘Malcolm’ and once ‘Mac’. Young names himself in valedictions as Celia’s brother. He does not sign with his surname which can however be deduced from the combination of postscripts signed ‘M H Y’; and Celia being named in the endorsement to one letter as ‘C. G. Young’. He is is presumably ‘Malcolm H. Young agent’ who features in the Tsingtao / Hong Kong List for 1941. Several references indicate a conventionally Christian religiosity and some connection with a church for English expatriates in the city. Ten long letters. Three from 1937 18 January 28 November and 10 December; seven from 1938 13 20 and 27 February 6 March 7 April 6 May and 13 November. A total of 30pp 4to neatly and closely written. A little aged and worn but in good overall condition. Two of the letters are incomplete; that of 10 December 1937 only consists of the first page; that of 13 November 1938 lacks the fourth page of five. The correspondence contains a deal of personal matter but the extracts that follow concentrate on the political situation on the ground. Letter One 18 January 1937 puts us straight in the action: ‘I think I last wrote to you on Sunday before last just before the Japanese came in. This took place on the Monday without incident or conflict of any kind - no one killed or injured & no shot fired. It was a tense time however all the forenoon as it was not known what would happen. From early morning Airplanes were flying all over quite low & making an noise. It was alarming but they were only making quite sure that there were no soldiers here. They dropped a few bombs in the outskirts to frighten people - & where they thought there might be soldiers - but no harm was done. / It was a day of deliverance & thankfulness when in the afternoon they marched in quietly & took possession.’ He refers to ‘many unpleasantnesses’ as ‘a new City Govt: is inaugurated - this took place yesterday just a week after the troops came in - we are glad to have the war cloud removed - that is we hope it will be - Shops have been kept close shut & the poor Chinese much frightened by their rough treatment & seizure of houses goods & people. However they also gave employment to many coolies. Even the houses of Foreigners were not exempt from intrusion but on the whole as invading armies go they have not been too bad.’ This brings us to the end of the first of the thirty pages of text. He continues the first letter with more news of the state of affairs including: ‘We had a lot of the soldiers encamped just below here in empty summer bungalows some of whom were a nuisance & our servants were alarmed; - they even intruded on ours and our neighbours premises but did no harm: and on our complaining to the Consel who took prompt action with the Japanese Military Head Quarters were soon checked. This crowd has moved on elsewhere now & I hope we shall have no more.’ He reports that ‘The Censors . are at work here in the P.O. making delay in delivery of mails’. In the second letter November 28 1937 he reports: ‘The Japanese are advancing in the N. of the province but rather hesitantly - I suppose negotiations are going on. They have huge commercial interests in Shantung - especially at Tringtao which it is to their interest to preserve. The Chinese may be using these to bargain with the enemy at our gates. It is hard to know what is happening. Meanwhile Shai is suffering terrible aftermath of war with its hungry crowds of refugees poorly clad & with sickness among them; & still the Japanese advance & Nanking is threatened is threatened.’ He has every sympathy for ‘the Chinese who have fought so bravely’ but believes it is time to make peace ‘since they cannot hope to win in the unequal struggle. Japan’s better trained & equipped armies carrying all before them. Locally the tension increases & the price of food & coal increases. The railway being if not actually interrupted so denuded of cars removed South by the Govt. that no coal trains can come from the mines.’ On 13 February 1938 he reports on ‘Work on clearing the port - blocked by departing Chinese troops with sunken ships & other obstructions - . while the demolition of buildings - destroyed by the Chinese - is progressing preparatory to re-building later. Whatever happens the Japanese are going to keep Tsingtao so the only thing is to make the best of things & as far as possible work with them - this for Chinese & Foreigners alike . I fear that the Chinese will be afraid to open up their shops much. The Japanese are opening & numbers of them returning by every steamer from Japan & Dairen. Commodities too are showing cheaper prices. Water is very short but work is in hand for repairs & they say that after 10 days there will be improvement.’ On 6 March 1938: ‘As you surmise it is still far from plain sailing both for ourselves and the original inhabitants of these regions the Chinese. The power & authority of the new masters is everywhere felt and we as well as the Chinese have to mind our Ps & Qs with them. The name and authority of the Occidental powers is not what it was - & they like to let us know it. . The Railway is not yet working fully & the harbour is still closed’. On 6 May 1938 he bemoans ‘the present disturbed state of the country which alas shows no signs of improvement. - But what would you - if the incomers win peace & order follow but naturally the people of the land oppose them in all ways with resulting chaos & danger to all. It is very sad. & fighting with heavy losses on both sides continues. . all along the Railways we are told villages on both sides have been burned down. Business of all kinds is very little except among the Japanese who appear to be very busy & are re-building their factories & doing other business - giving employment it is true to some workmen but as they are self-sufficient & very efficient they have no use for Foreign help. Chinese with money have largely departed elsehwere & those remaining will not do anything this year. - The new regime have installed a very good & quick Bus service which gives rapid & convenient transportation to & fro town’. In the last letter 13 November 1938 he complains that ‘The days are short now & “Tokyo†time is tiresome but we adjust things to some extent by altering times. For instance Early Service Holy Communion is put at 8.30 instead of 8 which helps. We were glad to be there this morning & the church room was warmed by a welcome stove fire The first time it has been required this season. There were not so many present . On Friday 11th. we went out to the British. Cemetery here at the Cenotaph the usual memorial service was held. It as a bitter day. A detachment from H.M.S. “Folkestone†now in port were present many of the men being war veterans. 1865 Civil War Discharge Papers for Sergeant Allen B. St. John of the Second Regiment of Connecticut Heavy Artillery
1865. Ephemera. One sheet of paper with another sheet with the oath of identity attached to the back the photocopy of the oath is part of the papers that will come with the document. Allen St. John enlisted as a Private on August 18 1862 was promoted to Corporal on November 4 1862 and to Sergeant on March 23 1864. When he joined his unit in 1862 it was known as the 19th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. In November of the same year the name was changed to 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery. The regiment served in the defenses of Washington D. C. until May 17 1864 when it was ordered to join the Army of the Potomac. It participated in the battles of Spottsylvania Tolopotomy Hanover Court House Cold Harbor Petersburg Winchester Fisher's Hill Cedar Creek Hatcher's Run Petersburg all in Virginia. The papers come framed in a nice vintage double matted bevelled wood frame decorated in black and gold. Condition is near fine. unknown

A B Eaton from Brazos Island is dated December 15th 1847 and is addressed to Major Thos. B Eastland q.m. The document reads "Major - I respectfully require of the Quartermaster's Department the necessary transportation receipts in bulk for the Subs Stores herewith invoiced as required by Par 1088 Army Regulations. - Respectfully Your Obt Servt A B Eaton Capt .sp" The second document signed by Eaton on December 17th 1847 is also addressed to Eastland and has the same exact content as the first letter not a copy as the date is different and the writing has variation. A collection of Thomas B. Eastland's papers is held by the California Historical Society. <br /> <br /> From the Confederate Veteran February 1911 "Eastland Family" "Thomas B. Eastland came to Nashville where he was engaged in business until about 1840 when he went to New Orleans to engage in the cotton brokerage business and where he continued until the breaking out of the Mexican War during which he served under General Zachary Taylor as major." Thomas B. Eastland's diary titled To California Through Texas and Mexico: The Diary of Thomas B. Eastland and Joseph G. Eastland His Son was published by the California Historical Society in 1939 and is 59 pages long.<br /> <br /> From wikipedia: in 1846 ".it Brazos Island was the first military objective of the US Navy in support of General Zachary Taylor's invasion of Mexico. Control over this important seaport was said by Harvard historian Leroy Graf to be the primary reason for the US invasion of Mexico. From Padre Island NS Historic Research Study Chapter 3 "After the outbreak of hostilities Brazos Island became the primary staging area for the continuing campaign. Volunteers from throughout Texas and the Mississippi Valley converged on the Island and headed inland for camps at Point Isabel and along the Rio Grande."<br /> <br /> Amos Beebe Eaton the signer of these documents 1806-1877 was a career officer in the United States Army. He was General Zachary Taylor's Chief Commissary of Subsidence during the Mexican War. He was a graduate of West Point in 1826 and was made Brevet Major General of the Union Army in 1865 appointed by Andrew Johnson. unknown
