‎Gutes Ex.; Einband etwas berieben. - Europe: The Witness (Europa: Die Zeugen) ist der zweite Teil der Autobiographie meines Vaters In Search (Auf der Suche). Sie umfaßt die Jahre 1944-1945, während derer mein Vater als Kriegsberichterstatter durch Europa reiste, um nach den Spuren der jüdischen Gemeinden zu suchen. Meine Photographien folgen der Chronologie dieser Reise und zeigen die von ihm beschriebenen Plätze in ihrer heutigen Gestalt. Des weiteren habe ich einige zu jener Zeit von ihm verfaßte Originaldokumente (telegraphische Berichte, Zeitungsausschnitte) beigefügt. Die Photographien von 1945 wurden von Eric Schwab, der meinen Vater im Jeep begleitete, im Verlauf ihrer gemeinsamen Reise gemacht. - Mikael Levin. (Verlagstext) / ? Mikael Levin, 1954 geboren, hat schon als Kind fotografiert, sich der Welt durch das künstliche Auge genähert, in aller Stille. Sein Thema war schon immer das Abseits, der Zwischenraum, die verlangsamte Zeit, die aus der Zeit getretene Bewegung. Thema seiner fotografischen Projekte waren seit jeher die Knoten im Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum, die sich einer linearen, einer perspektivischen Anschauung entziehen. Eine Seenlandschaft in Schweden, kaum merkliche Bewegung in den Blättern, ein Zittern der Wasseroberfläche, ein zerrissener Spiegel zwischen Wasserpflanzen. Das Tote Meer, dieser Ort unter dem Meeresspiegel, dieses Wasser, in dem nur ein paar Mikroorganismen überleben. Französische Agrarlandschaften, in denen der Boden erodiert, in einer Langsamkeit, die erst Mikael Levins Fotografien ahnbar machen. Grenzen in Europa, die zwar noch existieren, aber an denen nicht mehr kontrolliert wird, an denen weiterhin politische und kulturelle Welten aneinanderstoßen, die aber doch porös geworden sind, unsichtbar und doch vorhanden, irgendwo zwischen zwei Häusern, in der Mitte einer Straße, auf einer Wiese. Bilder eines Raumes, der noch immer fragmentiert ist, Unsicherheit verströmt. Und schließlich jene Flughafen-Transitflächen, in denen Räume und Grenzen nicht mehr identisch sind, imaginär und verschoben und dennoch von existentieller Bedeutung für all diejenigen, die sie durchqueren müssen. ? From Foreword: Several years before the hundredth anniversary of the American Civil War the American Ordnance Association planned a series of monographs on the weapons of that conflict. The project has a twofold purpose. First to commemorate the event in some unique but appropriate way; secondly to make available to students of the Civil War authentic data on the characteriestics of the weapons with which the battles of that war were fought. The present work is devoted to cavalry weapons -- and with good purpose. As all students of strategy and tactics know the Civil War was an historic example of mobility reconnaissance and fast maneuver. Many of its battles rank in history as classical examples which have been used as guides by military leaders of all nations. In no area is this more cogent than that of cavalry tactics. Those tactics were dependent not only upon the skill of the cavalry commander the bravery of the individual cavalryman and the condition of his mount but also upon the capabilities of the wapons with which the units were equipped. Thus a knowledge of the military characterisitcs of the cavalry weapons of the time is essential to a proper appraisal of the decisions of cavalry commanders and the outcome of those decisions. In this respect the military characteristics of all wapons of all battles of all wars are basic elements in appraising the final outcome.
