Lehner, Giancarlo Bigazzi, Francesco
Carnefici e vittime.

Margolius Kovaly Heda
I Do Not Want to Remember: Auschwitz, 1941-Prague, 1968
8vo, pp.174, ex-library with usual stamps and pate downs, otherwise good.In this fascinating work of autobiography, Margolius gives us her account of her early adult life in the Camps of Lodz and Auschwitz. After the war and back in Prague she and her husband joined the Communist Party. In doing so, they believed that socialism offered a genuine alternative to the injustice, racism and war of capitalism. Yet under the Soviet Stalinist version of socialism; their idealism was gradually undermined. Her husband was tried and executed in a party purge. The Prague Sping of 1968 gave her a brief hope that a genuine Democratic Socialist society might be possible. This hope was extinguished by the intervention of Soviet armed forces. This then is a remarkable work of hope in the face of horror and defeat. The book itself is in a good overall condition. It is aformer library copy. It therefore comes with the normal marks one would expect. DJ very good. Spine and covers all excellent.

Fann Beyond Marx and Wittgenstein (A Confession of a Wittgensteinian Marxist turned Taoist)At first sight, Karl Marx and Ludwig Wittgenstein may well seem to be as different from each other as it is possible for the ideas of two major intellectuals to be. Despite this standard conception, however, a small number of scholars have long suggested that there are deeper philosophical commonalities between Marx and Wittgenstein. They have argued that, once grasped, these commonalities can radically change and enrich understanding both of Marxism and of Wittgensteinian philosophy. This book develops and extends this unorthodox view, emphasising the mutual enrichment that comes from bringing Marx's and Wittgenstein's ideas into dialogue with one another.Essential reading for all scholars and philosophers interested in the Marxist philosophy and the philosophy of Wittgenstein, this book will also be of vital interest to those studying and researching in the fields of social philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of social science and political economy.

Mochulsky Fyodor Vasilevich
Gulag Boss a Soviet Memoir
8vo 216 x 145 mm. searing accounts of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Evgeniia Ginzburg and Varlam Shalamov opened the world's eyes to the terrors of the Soviet Gulag. But not until now has there been a memoir of life inside the camps written from the perspective of an actual employee of the Secret police. In this riveting memoir, superbly translated by Deborah Kaple, Fyodor Mochulsky describes being sent to work as a boss at the forced labor camp of Pechorlag in the frozen tundra north of the Arctic Circle. Only twenty-two years old, he had but a vague idea of the true nature of the Gulag. What he discovered was a world of unimaginable suffering and death, a world where men were starved, beaten, worked to death, or simply executed. Mochulsky details the horrific conditions in the camps and the challenges facing all those involved, from prisoners to guards. He depicts the power struggles within the camps between the secret police and the communist party, between the political prisoners (most of whom had been arrested for the generic crime of counter-revolutionary activities) and the criminal convicts. And because Mochulsky writes of what he witnessed with the detachment of the engineer that he was, readers can easily understand how a system that destroyed millions of lives could be run by ordinary Soviet citizens who believed they were advancing the cause of socialism. Mochulsky remained a communist party member his entire life--he would later become a diplomat--but was deeply troubled by the gap between socialist theory and the Soviet reality of slave labor and mass murder. This unprecedented memoir takes readers into that reality and sheds new light on one of the most harrowing tragedies of the 20th century.

Henry Michel
Marx.

Draitser, Emil
Shush! Growing Up Jewish under Stalin: A Memoir
8vo, 235 x 159 mm. Brand New Book with Free Worldwide Delivery. Many years after making his way to America from Odessa in Soviet Ukraine, Emil Draitser made a startling discovery: every time he uttered the word 'Jewish' - even in casual conversation - he lowered his voice. This behavior was a natural by-product, he realized, of growing up in the anti-Semitic, post-Holocaust Soviet Union, when 'Shush!' was the most frequent word he heard: 'Don't use your Jewish name in public. Don't speak a word of Yiddish. And don't cry over your murdered relatives'. This compelling memoir conveys the reader back to Draitser's childhood and provides a unique account of midtwentieth-century life in Russia as the young Draitser struggles to reconcile the harsh values of Soviet society with the values of his working-class Jewish family. Lively, evocative, and rich with humor, this unforgettable story ends with the death of Stalin and, through life stories of the author's ancestors, presents a sweeping panorama of two centuries of Jewish history in Russia.

Johnston Timothy
Being Soviet (Identity, Rumour, and Everyday Life under Stalin 1939-1953)
8vo. 6 illustrations. ISBN: 0199604037 Pages: 292 . adopts a refreshing and innovative approach to the years between the Nazi-Soviet Pact and Stalin's death in the USSR. Timothy Johnston draws on newspapers, films, plays, and popular music in order to examine the changing nature of Soviet identity in this era. He pays particular attention to the evolution of Britain and America from wartime allies to Cold War enemies. Being Soviet then explores how ordinary citizens related to this official version of Soviet identity. It examines that question via the rumours, jazz music, hairstyles, jokes, anti-war campaigns, and sexual relationships of the time. Johnston argues that these 'everyday' activities defined Soviet identity for the man on the street in the USSR. At the heart of the book is a sustained critique of the current emphasis on 'supporters' or 'resistors' of the regime. Johnston suggests that the shadow of Foucault looms too large in the history of Stalinism. The relationship between Soviet citizens and Soviet power was defined by the subtle tactics of everyday living. For many, life was not defined by 'belief' or 'unbelief' but rather the constant struggle to stay fed, informed, and entertained. This more nuanced approach offers a rich and textured image of what it meant to be Soviet in Stalin's least years.

This is the biography of the person who caused Alger Hiss to be indicted and convicted on a charge of perjury. The author joined the Communist Party in his youth, and after the spiritual disillusionment which caused him to break with the party, converted to Christianity and became a patriotic American. Gordon Paul
Vagabond Witness: Victor Serge and the Politics of Hope
8vo, br., pp.125. Victor Serge was the first and the greatest witness of the twentieth century. An anarchist in France, a syndicalist in Spain, a critical Bolshevik in Russia, an agent of the Comintern in Germany and Austria, an exile, Serge once said that people judged history, but they did so without knowing what really happened and who the actors really were. All his work - novels. reportage, poetry, criticism - was an attempt to show what really happened, and why. Serge never lost hope, that ordinary people would act for themselves and take control of their own lives. On the ship taking him to exile in Mexico, where he would die isolated and in poverty, he recalled, 'The Russians and Spaniards among us know what it is to take the world into their hands, to set the railways running and the factories working.no kind of predestination impels us to become the offal of the concentration camps.'
