Fu la non facile nascita di un altro e diverso partito: diverso rispetto alla formazione ‘rivoluzionaria’ sorta vent’anni prima. La nuova nascita era una necessità storica, nella situazione mondiale del tutto nuova determinata dalla sconfitta dei fascismi. Ma le potenzialità insite in tale nuovo inizio non furono sviluppate con la necessaria audacia da chi venne dopo: Berlinguer incluso. Riannodando i fili di questa storia, Canfora cerca le ragioni del mancato riconoscimento dell’approdo socialdemocratico che il mutato contesto storico determinava. Una timidezza che ha contribuito alla successiva debolezza progettuale e ‘svogliatezza’ pratica. E alla progressiva perdita di contatto con i gruppi sociali il cui consenso veniva dato ottimisticamente per scontato.

While both men espoused emancipation for American slaves, here their agreements ended. Lincoln thought that the free labor society of the American North provided great opportunities for free men missing from the American South, a kind of "farm ladder" that gave every man the ability to become a landowner. Marx thought such "free land" a chimera and (with information from German-American correspondents), was certain that the American future lay in the proletarianized cities. Abraham Lincoln and Karl Marx in Dialogue intersperses short selections from the two writers from their voluminous works, opening with an introduction that puts the ideas of the two men in the broad context of nineteenth-century thought and politics. The volume excerpts Lincoln's and Marx's views on slavery (they both opposed it for different reasons), the Civil War (Marx claimed the war concerned slavery and should have as its goal abolition; Lincoln insisted that his goal was just the defeat of the Confederacy), and the opportunities American free men had to gain land and economic independence. Through this volume, readers will gain a firmer understanding of nineteenth-century labor relations throughout the Atlantic world: slavery and free labor; the interconnections between slave-made cotton and the exploitation of English proletarians; and the global impact of the American Civil War.

Il tutto sotto una devastante pioggia di ferro e fuoco che, insieme a buona parte di Parigi, distruggerà il sogno utopico di una società egualitaria.

Silvio Pons rilegge visioni, legami, protagonisti e momenti principali nella storia del comunismo italiano come un particolare caso di studio del comunismo globale. La cultura politica espressa da gruppi dirigenti a forte vocazione intellettuale e da personalità come Gramsci, Togliatti, Berlinguer viene analizzata nelle visioni dell'ordine europeo e mondiale, nella costruzione di senso dei nessi tra identità nazionali e appartenenze internazionali, nell'approccio ai temi della pace e della guerra. L'internazionalismo fu una genealogia rivoluzionaria, un fondamento simbolico, un complesso di pratiche e una cultura condivisa. I comunisti italiani si ritagliarono un posto specifico nel progetto globale nato nel 1917, dando vita al principale partito comunista in Occidente e proponendosi come coscienza critica di una «comunità immaginata» su scala mondiale. Più di ogni altra cultura politica italiana, si legarono a influenze e connessioni transnazionali, con il risultato controverso di contribuire alla frattura della comunità nazionale nella guerra fredda e di esercitare un'opera di mediazione oltre i confini e le rappresentazioni dell'ordine bipolare. Il loro internazionalismo si trasformò nel corso del tempo, sebbene senza mai recidere del tutto il legame esistenziale con la matrice originaria, fino a confluire nella visione dell'Europa come soggetto della politica mondiale. Un'eredità che ha senso rivisitare oggi, in un tempo che registra il declino degli internazionalismi del secolo scorso mentre il mondo transnazionale stenta a emergere.

Nonostante la successiva "vulgata" del partito, che avrebbe dipinto un Gramsci "morto nelle carceri fasciste", egli passò i suoi ultimi due anni e mezzo in libertà condizionale. È verosimile che in quegli anni abbia smesso quasi completamente di scrivere? E perché non riprese i contatti con i vertici del partito e dell'Internazionale comunista? Alcune di queste domande sono inedite. Tutte aspettano ancora risposte convincenti. Lo Piparo sceglie di partire da un indizio, che gli appare subito forte, decisivo. Esamina con la lente del linguista la lettera di Gramsci a Tania del 27 febbraio 1933 che la cognata definì, per la sua scrittura allusiva, "un capolavoro di lingua esopica". La lettera è il grimaldello con cui viene forzato lo scrigno che racchiude la complessa personalità, politica e umana, del prigioniero. Entrato in carcere come "segretario del Partito comunista d'Italia", Gramsci ne uscì convinto che tutta la sua vita era stata "un grande errore, un dirizzone".

I miei anni a Mosca. Memorie di un comunista italiano (1958-1964)
8vo, br. ed. 304pp. Nel Centenario della nascita del PCI, l’autore – per quattro legislature deputato e stretto collaboratore di Enrico Berlinguer – ci regala, sotto forma di memoriale, la ricostruzione dettagliata della sua esperienza maturata quando giovanissimo, non ancora inquadrato in ruoli di funzionariato politico, viene chiamato dal partito a trasferirsi a Mosca – dove rimane dall’aprile 1958 alla fine del 1964 – per frequentare dei corsi di formazione (alla Scuola superiore di partito e poi all’Accademia di scienze sociali). Un’esperienza intensa, fatta di luci e di ombre e, sul piano politico, di conferme e di frustrazioni, che Rubbi condivide con una delegazione di giovani militanti italiani (tra cui un simpatico «spilungone milanese», un poco più che ventenne Antonio Pizzinato, destinato a diventare quasi trent’anni più tardi segretario generale della CGIL) e che sarà in quegli anni vissuta, altrettanto intensamente, da diverse migliaia di ragazzi provenienti da tutto il mondo – in particolare dai tanti paesi del pianeta dove erano in corso guerre d’indipendenza anti-coloniali – tutti o quasi accomunati da esistenze segnate da ristrettezze e povertà e dall’impossibilità, da parte delle famiglie di provenienza, di provvedere ai loro studi universitari. Un’esperienza certo non agevole – studi così severi ad una certa età, scrive Rubbi, «quando ormai più che allo studio ci si insegna a come costruirsi una vita» – e che, dopo alterni episodi (a cominciare dal matrimonio contratto nel 1963 con una ragazza moscovita), volgerà al termine, affrettando il rientro in Italia, a seguito di un avvenimento di politica interna sovietica giunto «inatteso e scioccante» a metà ottobre ’64: la brusca liquidazione dai vertici del Cremlino di Nikita Chrušcëv. “I miei anni a Mosca” è indirizzato da Antonio Rubbi ai suoi nipoti americani Giacomo e Giulia, da cui, malgrado l’enorme affetto, si sente doppiamente separato: dal l’immenso Oceano Atlantico e dalla lingua; ma a trarne beneficio siamo anche noi lettori, affascinati dal racconto di dense vicende personali, capaci nello stesso tempo di assumere un valore storico e politico generale. Conquistò una posizione di rilievo con il romanzo Golyi god, quadro della rivoluzione del 1917. Attaccato dalla critica russa per il romanzo Povest nepogaennoj luny, fu arrestato nel 1937; morì in campo di concentramento. Dove e come sia morto Boris Pilnjak ancora non s’è saputo. La rivista sovietica “Moskvá” nel maggio del ’64. pubblicando un capitolo di un romanzo inedito di Pilnjak, parlò genericamente della tragedia dello scrittore travolto dalle conseguenze del “culto della personalità” staliniana. É probabile che sia stato arrestato tra il ’37 e il ’38, mandato in campo di concentramento ed eliminato, assieme alla moglie, un figlio e una figlia. Una fine tanto oscura chiuse un’esistenza che era stata tumultuosa, agitata, corsa dal vento dell’inquietudine, dell’avventura e dal gusto per i colpi di scena. L’accesa coloritura slavofila della sua partecipazione alla Rivoluzione lo aveva portato molto presto a dibattersi sempre piú convulsamente nella morsa dell’ortodossia; il brillante “compagno di strada,” che era stato per qualche anno quasi un modello per la nuova letteratura in Russia, s’era fatto stritolare dagli ingranaggi repressivi dell’implacabile meccanismo burocratico. Sequestri, reprimende, autocritiche, rielaborazioni, tentativi di rieducazione e goffi allineamenti: le aveva passate tutte, le tappe di un convulso annaspare. Infine su lui era calata la mannaia del silenzio: nel 1939 qualcuno lo vide, e fu l’ultima volta, segar legna in un gulag di Medvezegorsk (la “Montagna degli orsi”) in Carelia, all’estremo nord della Russia, in un paesaggio da Oltre le foreste. Per il lettore che oggi ripigli in mano le sue opere due sentimenti si accavallano: il senso di frustrazione che dà il sapere che un genio (e tale egli certamente fu, superiore, nel romanzo e nel racconto, agli stessi Babel’ e Bulgakov) è stato cosi crudelmente e stupidamente perduto: e l’euforia della sorpresa, perché in anticipo su tutti Pilnják aveva posto, e forse risolto, quei problemi di struttura della narrazione e di rapporto tra segno e metafora, e tra metafora e struttura, intorno ai quali si sono arrovellate in Europa intere generazioni di scrittori. Non sono soltanto le discrepanze tra l’ideologia comunista e la vocazione dell’autore a occuparsi solamente del “destino della Russia” a porre problemi al lettore (certi temi come quello del “partito comunista come semplice anello nella storia della Russia” sono ritornati più tardi in Il dottor Živago – e le pagine finali del romanzo di Pasternak sembrano una risposta provvisoria all’esclamazione dello scettico di Terza capitale di fronte alla rivoluzione: “Chissà cosa ne verrà fuori in futuro!” – come in tutta la letteratura del dissenso degli anni Sessanta e Settanta). Oggi ad appassionare è anche la “prosa senza soggetto” che i critici stalinisti gli rimproveravano. “Le parole sono per me come le monete per il numismatico,” scrisse Pilnjak. Mai come in lui la crisi e la ricerca di nuove vie della prosa narrativa moderna avevano assunto un’evidenza tanto sontuosa.
