‎This important scholarly work is volume two in a series of four volumes that will publish all the more than six hundred cuneiform tablets in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Included are 106 religious, scientific, scholastic, and literary texts, written in Sumerian and Akkadian and primarily dated to the latter part of the first millenium b.c. They shed new light on the civilization of the ancient Near East - on its complex beliefs and customs and surprisingly vast knowledge of mathematics and astronomy - for both the contemporary scholar and interested reader. The texts are organized in five sections: Documents of the Temple Cult include hymns and prayers, rituals and petitions; Documents of the Incantation Priest, Diviner, Physician, and Magician reveal various categories of omens; Literary Texts present myths and legends; The Scholastic Tradition contains a variety of texts and lists, including mathematical and astronomical texts; and the final section covers Unidentified Fragments. Among the most important texts are No. 42, a fragment of the Babylonian version of the ancient Flood story, and No. 81, which attests to the intellectual achievement of Babylonian astronomers. Eighteen distinguished international scholars in the field have contributed transliterations and translations of each tablet, and these are accompanied by commentaries and by insightful introductory essays on each genre. The volume was assembled and edited by Ira Spar, Professor of Ancient Studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey, and W. G. Lambert, Professor Emeritus of the University of Birmingham, England. Lambert also contributed several entries and a general introduction that provides contextual information about the transmission of the literary and scholastic tradition in pre-Hellenistic Mesopotamia. The precise facsimile drawings of every tablet hand-made by Ira Spar are a valuable visual accompaniment to the text. This publication reaffirms the Museum's ongoing commitment to promote wider knowledge of Ancient Near Eastern civilization. And significantly, it appears at a time when better understanding of the history and culture of that region of the world holds particular relevance. ISBN: 978-960-8145-93-1.</p><p>The author's interest in Thermos goes back to the time when he served as Ephor of Antiquities for Achaia and Aitoloakarnania 1976-1983. It was his obligation to deal with archaeological matters of that site such as the arrangement of the agora. Thus when in 1983 at the request of the Archaeological Society in Athens he undertook the continuation of the excavation of Thermos which had been conducted by Rhomaios until 1932 he began with the agora. Yet the burning archaeological questions of Thermos had mainly to do with the monuments and with the stratigraphical sequence below the horizon of the early archaic temples in the context of the prehistoric settlement with Megaron A the establishment of the first centuries after the disintegration of the Mycenaean world Megaron Β with its hypothetical colonnade and the ash altar. In archaeological circles indeed the prevailing idea was that those questions which had already been raised again in the past by Drerup Wesenberg Schmaltz Coulson Mallwitz and others before them should indeed be reexamined. Much time had passed moreover since the first revealing researches of the two succesive excavators George Soteriades and K.A. Romaios 1897-1916. The present monograph translated in Εnglish by Miriam Caskey is a condensed but in some places also revised and supplemented edition of the greek publication entitled "Thermos. ‎Chora: Byzantium's shining piece of art.‎

Located in the Edirnekapi neighborhood of Istanbul and dating as far back as the 6th Century, the Church of Chora Monastery (Kariye Mosque) stands out as a noteworthy Byzantine work of art in the world of art history with its mosaics and frescoes. The monastery was renovated during the Palaeologos Dynasty, also known as the "Third Golden Age" of Byzantine Art, and has spectacular mosaics and frescoes which are at the heart of our work. Before studying these mosaics and frescoes in our book, we provided the vast history of the period in an effort to clarify the themes featured on the panels. Also included in our book is the life story of Theodore Metochites, a versatile administrator and the person behind the creation of the mosaics and frescoes of the monastery which represent the most beautiful examples of Byzantine art. There are mosaics in the exterior and interior narthexes of Chora depicting the lives of Jesus and Mary as well as religious stories, while its domes, arches and walls have both mosaics and frescoes concerning subjects that are interrelated and depicted mostly together and sometimes in different locations. For a holistic recounting of those related depictions that are placed independently from each other, repetitions were necessary at times. In addition to this world-renowned church which we tried to present to you within a broad time line, we also covered the other churches in Istanbul that belong to the Byzantine Period, in the last section of our book. We ended our journey with these churches and monasteries, which are also significant in Byzantine history.‎
