‎[NATURAL HISTORY & ROOSEVELT -- SOUTH & CENTRAL AMERICA]. CHERRIE, George K[ruck].‎

‎Dark trails: adventures of a naturalist. . . Foreword by Kermit Roosevelt.‎

‎New York: G.P. Putnam’s Sons 1930. Tall 8vo. xvi 322 pp. Photo frontisp. 57 photo illustrations 1 large folding map. Blue publisher’s cloth red lettering front cover & spine colour-illustrated endpapers minor shelfwear rubbing w/ Art Deco cover art minor chipping head & foot of spine minor closed tears creasing some minor scuffing still a VG/VG- copy inscribed by the author on verso of frontisp. to Aubrey Waller Cook 1875-1958 President of the Waggoner Paint Co. in Kansas City MO at the time. First edition stated & inscribed by the author of this exceedingly rare memoir by the famed naturalist and ornithologist quick and considered by President Teddy Roosevelt to have been an “efficient and fearless man.†Many of his expeditions extended through Central and South America as he survived a near-arrest in Peru after being shot in the leg and later survived a shoot-out with one of his disgruntled assistants who shot him in the arm with a shotgun while he was killing the man. After a desperate 90-mile trek to get the injured and delirious Cherrie onto a steamboat he was finally paddled to a hospital while the police hung around to arrest him should he recover. He’s perhaps best remembered for his role in Roosevelt’s famous 1913-1914 “River of Doubt Expedition†when after his loss in the 1912 presidential election Roosevelt struck out on the Roosevelt-Rondon Expedition to map the mysterious Rio da Duvida Amazon River tributary. Several participants were struck down by tropical diseases Roosevelt and Rondon downsized the party to 22 men including Roosevelt his son Kermit and George Cherrie. Within weeks Roosevelt was stricken with fever and infection constantly demanding to be left behind and Kermit and Cherrie refused to do so even though every night he would say “he can’t possibly live until morning.†Very scarce in original dustjacket. ‎[Politics - Democratic Party - Pennsylvania] Baker, Newton; Roosevelt, Eleanor; et al‎

‎Archive of Incoming Correspondence of Ellen Gowen Hood of the Democratic Women’s Luncheon Club of Philadelphia From Colleagues Including Newton Baker 1920s-1940s‎

‎V.P. 1940. With fifty-eight letters from Newton Baker 1924-1937. Generally fine condition. Ellen Gowen Hood was active in the Democratic party at both the local and national levels. An obituary from the Philadelphia Daily News in 1970 described her as “one of the earliest local advocates of women in politics.†She was the chairman of the Democratic Women’s Luncheon Club of Philadelphia for 20 years and had regular correspondence with women such as Edith Bolling Wilson and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Democratic women’s clubs became active across the country after the 19th amendment passed in 1920 and the democratic party sought to mobilize women voters. As chairman of the Democratic Women’s Luncheon Club of Philadelphia Hood organized events with prominent political speakers and then had the speeches printed in book format. Without Hood’s side of the correspondence we don’t get insight into her philosophy of women’s participation in politics. We do however get a sense for the role that the club played in the Democratic Party. Baker was a periodic guest of the luncheon club and in his letters he praised the organization saying “I think I have never addressed a more intelligent or obviously influential audience†and "I think there is no more useful forum anywhere. They print the addresses made at their luncheons and give them a wide circulation throughout the country so that their pamphlets are now in libraries and in the hands of studious and thoughtful people everywhere." As an avid supporter of Wilsonian ideas and the League of Nations Hood’s political intention with the club seems more focused on bringing speakers that would highlight those causes than specifically speaking to women’s participation in politics.

The letters from Baker to Hood reveal their shared political beliefs and goals. Their letters are ongoing conversations about the League of Nations and the World Court; the Democratic Conventions in 1924 1928 and 1932; and how democrats should govern following the Great Depression and prohibition. Baker frequently recommends essays and speeches for Hood to read and also helps connect her with potential speakers for the Luncheon Club. He addresses her as a political peer and we also get a sense of her professional persistence and savvy -- in nearly every letter for twenty years Baker responds to her requests for him to come and speak at the club.

The letters give insight into Baker’s political beliefs as they evolve through the 1920s and 1930s. In the 20s-30s he writes as his thinking on the League of Nations changes from strongly feeling that the United States should join to discouraging it until there is complete support. In one letter Baker describes in confidence one of the only times he disagreed with President Wilson as Secretary of War -- when Wilson sent American troops to North Russia at the end of World War I. In a few memorable letters from 1932 Baker writes about his experience of the 1932 democratic convention and his sense of relief when he was not chosen for nomination.

The letters also exhibit Baker’s writing style and his tendency to wax poetic about democratic politics. For example speaking about the limitations of the Democratic Party he writes “The trouble about it all is that nobody has yet invented anything better for the long run and the steady pull than democracy and so we just have to be patient with it as we are with the small misdoings of our children and take our joy out of the sure forecast of their fine performance when they have matured.â€

Other correspondences in the collection include letters from Edith Bolling Wilson Eleanor Roosevelt Secretary of State Cordell Hull historian and diplomat Claude Bowers and Bess Truman. There are also several letters from Ralph Hayes Baker’s wartime secretary in the war department and a central figure in Baker’s 1932 presidential campaign. These letters go into detail about Baker’s role at the 1932 convention his legacy on labor issues and a rumor that he was Jewish.

Overall the collection provides insight into Democratic Women’s Clubs of the period. We suspect the Baker letters to exist in duplicate at his archive but the collection still provides a succinct opportunity for research on the subject.

Please contact us for a full inventory. unknown‎

No father could have asked for a more understanding and sympathetic tribute from a son and it is certainly written with deep affection. I have a slight reservation about some things that are said in the book about other people but not about my husband. The reason is that I think they reflect the observations and feelings of a very young man perhaps at the time not quite capable of understanding certain things and who therefore was impatient. During her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt's presidency 1933-1945 she was indispensable as his "eyes and ears" and was a vocal advocate for the rights of African Americans the poor and other underrepresented groups. After FDR passed away she passionately continued her advocacy work; she served on the UN Commission for Human Rights 1946-1952 and oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1947-1948 the latter of which she regarded as her greatest achievement. In honor of her human rights efforts President Truman called her "The First Lady of the World." . Signed. First Edition. Framed Photo. Very Good. 13" x 16". paperback‎

‎Isaac Roosevelt 1726-1794 Soldier Statesman Citizen of New York: A short genealogical record of the Roosevelts from 1649 to 1934 and notes in reference to John Bailey sword maker to the Officers of the American Revolution‎

‎Privately Printed 1934. Hardcover. 3 7 7 pages on hand-made paper; 2 mounted photographs the first of a painted portrait of Isaac Roosevelt and the second of the sword. Folio-sized 10-1/4 by 14 inches. A rather odd book presenting a survey of Franklin Roosevelt's male ancestors with an emphasis on the Revolutionary War-era politician Isaac Roosevelt. The final page is devoted to John Bailey who made a sword for Isaac. It appears that the House of Peters at one time a fine clothier had turned to selling artifacts in the 1930s issuing elaborate books to document collections they presumably had for sale. In this case your humble cataloguer believes they had in their possession a sword once owned by Isaac Roosevelt and seeing that his great-great grandson was in the White House sought to capitalize on this fact. It is in any case an uncommon book published in an edition of just 12 copies. Two copies located on OCLC one at the American Antiquarian Society and the second at the Harry Ransom Center. Bound in yellow half morocco over blue cloth. Spine tanned with a bit of spotting to the leather else a near fine copy in a very good slipcase. Bookmark ribbon detached but laid in. Copy 3 of 12 numbered signed Fred Peters and dated on a sheet of House of Peters letterhead tipped to the first leaf. JSP01.
Privately Printed hardcover‎

‎Progressive Era Battle Flag: Theodore Roosevelt.‎

‎1912. Progressive era "Battle Flag" from 1912 with a printed portrait of Theodore Roosevelt at the center surrounded by the text "Progressive Roosevelt 1912 Battle Flag" with "D & C N.Y." at lower left and and "Copyright by Underwood & Underwood NY." The flag measures 22 inches by 24 inches. Frustrated that he did not win the Republican nomination for the Presidency in 1912 Roosevelt founded the Progressive or the "Bull Moose" party in order to challenge the Republican incumbent William Howard Taft. Both would ultimately lose to Democrat Woodrow Wilson. In very good condition. The Progressive Party was a third party in the United States formed in 1912 by former President Theodore Roosevelt after he lost the presidential nomination of the Republican Party to his former protégé incumbent President William Howard Taft. The new party was known for taking advanced positions on progressive reforms and attracting some leading reformers. After the party's defeat in the 1912 presidential election it went into rapid decline disappearing by 1918. The Progressive Party was popularly nicknamed the "Bull Moose Party" since Roosevelt often said that he felt "strong as a bull moose" both before and after an assassination attempt on the campaign trail. As a member of the Republican Party Roosevelt had served as President from 1901 to 1909 becoming increasingly progressive in the later years of his presidency. In the 1908 presidential election Roosevelt helped ensure that he would be succeeded by Secretary of War Taft. After Taft took office he hewed closer to the conservative wing of the party and this and other actions alienated Roosevelt from his former friend. Progressive Republican leader Robert La Follette had already announced a challenge to Taft for the 1912 Republican nomination but many of his supporters shifted to Roosevelt after the former President decided to seek a third presidential term which was permissible under the Constitution prior to the ratification of the Twenty-second Amendment. At the 1912 Republican National Convention Taft narrowly defeated Roosevelt for the party's presidential nomination. After the convention Roosevelt Frank Munsey George Walbridge Perkins and other progressive Republicans established the Progressive Party and nominated a ticket of Roosevelt and Hiram Johnson of California at the 1912 Progressive National Convention. The new party attracted several Republican officeholders although nearly all of them remained loyal to the Republican Party—in California Johnson and the Progressives took control of the Republican Party. The party's platform built on Roosevelt's Square Deal domestic program and called for several progressive reforms. The platform asserted that "to dissolve the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesmanship of the day". Proposals on the platform included restrictions on campaign finance contributions a reduction of the tariff and the establishment of a social insurance system an eight-hour workday and women's suffrage. The party was split on the regulation of large corporations with some party members disappointed that the platform did not contain a stronger call for "trust-busting". Party members also had different outlooks on foreign policy with pacifists like Jane Addams opposing Roosevelt's call for a naval build-up. In the 1912 election Roosevelt won 27.4% of the popular vote compared to Taft's 23.2% making Roosevelt the only third party presidential nominee to finish with a higher share of the popular vote than a major party's presidential nominee. Both Taft and Roosevelt finished behind Democratic nominee Woodrow Wilson who won 41.8% of the popular vote and the vast majority of the electoral vote. unknown‎
