Con il suo stile esplicito, la distorsione delle figure e il rifiuto degli standard di bellezza convenzionali, Egon Schiele (1890-1918) fu un pioniere dell'espressionismo austriaco nonché uno dei ritrattisti più stupefacenti del XX secolo. Pupillo di Gustav Klimt, Schiele si cimentò in uno sfavillante stile art nouveau prima di sviluppare la propria estetica - molto più cruda e provocatoria - di linee spigolose, colori sgargianti e figure affettate e slanciate. Prediligendo pose erotiche, esplicite o inquietanti in cui lui o le sue modelle - di volta in volta scheletriche e malaticce oppure vigorose e sensuali - si accovacciavano sul pavimento, languivano con le gambe divaricate, guardavano storto l'osservatore e spingevano i genitali in primo piano, la sua prolifica produzione di ritratti e autoritratti sconcertò l'establishment viennese con una forza psicologica e sessuale senza precedenti. Secondo molti contemporanei, oltre a essere sgradevole, l'opera di Schiele era anche moralmente riprovevole: tanto che nel 1912, per un breve periodo, l'artista fu incarcerato per oscenità. Oggi, la sua opera è rinomata per l'approccio rivoluzionario alla figura umana e per lo stile di disegno esplicito e particolarmente appassionato, quasi violento. ill., ril. Egon Schiele (1890-1918) è il pittore che ha esercitato l'influenza più duratura sulla scena artistica viennese dopo la conclusione della grande era di Klimt. Dopo una breve parentesi nello stile di Klimt, suo mentore, Schiele mise presto in discussione, con i dipinti aspri e di difficile fruizione, la tendenza estetizzante dell'Art Nouveau viennese, orientato verso la bellezza della superficie. This is copy 88 issued to F M Teed of Brooklyn New York. Betts: 25-26. 1st edition. Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament draws were counted as a half point. In the second half they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds 8 replay rounds and 4 game playoff for first at the end there were 50 rounds all told !. Like the 4th Congress this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The retirement of Captain Mackenzie seems to date from this time though some sources credit him as US Champion until his death in 1891 giving the top American finisher some claim on being de facto US Champion. New York: Sixth American Chess Congress 1891 xxxviii490 pages with table and diagrams. Royal octavo 9 3/4" x 7" bound in full leather with gilt lettering to spine. Limited to 500 copies. This is copy 111 issued to R W Ferguson of Flushing New York. Betts: 25-26 .1st edition. Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament draws were counted as a half point. In the second half they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds 8 replay rounds and 4 game playoff for first at the end there were 50 rounds all told !. Like the 4th Congress this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The retirement of Captain Mackenzie seems to date from this time though some sources credit him as US Champion until his death in 1891 giving the top American finisher some claim on being de facto US Champion.
