Linnaeus (Linne, Linn), Carl von
Amoenitates academicae; seu dissertationes variae physicae medicae botanicae antheac seorsim editate nunc ollectae et auctae cum Tabulis anenaeis. Volumen Septimum Volume 7. Contains the first published botanical study of the tea plant.
Lugduni Batavorum: Westenium 1769. Latin text throughout. Title page dedication leaf pp 506 ii with seven engraved folding plates and one folding table slight damage to the margin of the ornithological plate a little age-toning generally endpapers unevenly browned but otherwise very clean internally bound in full contemporary polished calf slight wear at the corners joints cracking slightly lacking a small piece at the head of the spine. The students whose names appear on the dissertations were not necessarily their authors; it was their function to present the dissertation and defend it in public debate but the responsibility for the content of the dissertation was largely that of the professor in this case Linnaeus. The fact that Linnaeus cited the Amoenitates as the place of publication for plant names he credited to himself indicates that he was generally the principal author of the work. At the end of this volume is a list of "Editiones operum auctoris" including the Amoenitates with the clear implication that Linnaeus is the author. Of great importance for "Potus Theae" in which Pehr Tillaeus discussed among other things the properties and benefits of tea as a medicine. Tillaeus's dissertation was the first in-depth botanical study of the tea bush and he also named parts of the plant. The tea plant had only been introduced to Sweden and Europe generally as recently as 1763. Also includes Hoffman's "Potus Chocolatae" - a botanico-medical essay on the merits of drinking chocolate flavored with vanilla. Botanical accounts are given of the cacao tree Theobroma cacao L. and of the vanilla orchid Epidendrum vanilla L. = Vanilla fragrans. The preparation of the chocolate beans and of the beverage by the Spaniards is described. Linnaeus advocated use of the beverage as a pleasant drink and for treatment of hypochrondria and hemorrhoids. Other essays include : Gahn's "Fundamenta Agrostographiae" - a classified list of grasses of economic importance preceded by a history of prior studies of grasses. Laurin's "Menthae usus" - an essay on the kinds of mints useful in medicinal preparations. Lado's "Motus polychrestus" - an essay on the importance of physical exercise as a preservative and restorative of good health. Tengborg's "Hortus Culinaris" - an essay on edible and economic plants of Sweden their culture and hardiness. Includes those then in use and others suggested. Backmann's "Fundamenta ornithologica" - an exposition of the fundamentals of Linnaeus' classification of birds. Uddman's "Lepra" - An overview of leprosy including hypotheses about causes types of leprosy possible treatments. Aphonin's "Usus historiae naturalis" - An essay on the importance of a knowledge of natural history to greater improvement of agriculture and horticulture with emphasis on those kinds of plants best suited as food for each kind of domestic animal. Osterdam's "Siren lacertina" - an account of the two-legged Siren lizard of South Carolina sometimes known as the Carolina mud iguana. Berlin's "Usus Muscorum" - an historical study of the economic uses of lichens in Sweden including Lapland. Roos' "Mundus Invisibilis" - a medico-botanical treatise on airborne spores and microorganisms some of which Linnaeus believed to be responsible for infectious diseases. Blad's "Fundamenta entomologiae" - an historical review of entomology with a list of 32 pre-Linnaean authors instructions on how to collect and preserve insects and the fundamentals of their classification. Wedenberg's "Varietas ciborum" - a medico-nutritional essay on the wide range of foodstuffs eaten by man and a classification of these foods into 10 groups and the effects of diets in which each group dominates and the diseases which might result. Linnaeus' concluding advice is "Ne quid nimis" nothing in excess ! With approximately ten other essays. LATIN TEXT THROUGHOUT. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AMOENITATES VOLUMES. RARE. Full Leather. Very Good. Westenium Hardcover

MacPhail, James
The Gardener's Remembrancer; Exhibiting the Nature of Vegetable Life and the Effects of Vegetation; and Containing Practicable Methods of Gardening Both in the Natural Way and in the Artificial Forcing Scheme; Adapted either to Small or Large Gardens
London: Longman Hurst Rees Orme & Brown 1819. the title continues: "to which is now added the culture of the cucumber; the plan of a lately invented brick frame for forcing fruits flowers and esculent vegetables without the influence of fire-heat". Second edition. Illustrated with one folding plate a plan of a forcing frame small octavo pp xxxvi 428 errata leaf edges untrimmed original boards rubbed and a little worn recently re-backed with paper spine and label. There is offsetting from the plate to the opposite page of text and some foxing to the plate and occasionally throughout the book but this is not heavy. The section on vine cultivation has seven pages on which some instructions have been underlined in ink but this has been done so neatly that it almost looks as though it it part of the printing. Bound in at the front is a 12 page bookseller's catalogue. This is an uncut and unpressed copy and as close to its original state is is likely to be found. A great copy. Loudon referred to MacPhail as "an excellent grower of pines and melons" but it is perhaps for his culture of cucumbers that he is best remembered. His brick forcing frame illustrated in this work was described by Rogers 1839 as " an excellent invention that has certainly rendered the forcing of this vegetable more simple.there are few gentleman's gardens and few principal market gardens without them". He was gardener to Lord Hawkesbury at Addiscombe Place Croydon for nearly twenty years. Second edition. Boards. Very Good. Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown Hardcover

Ravenshaw, Thomas F
A New List of the Flowering Plants and Ferns Growing Wild in the County of Devon with supplement Variant issue
London Ilfracombe & Torquay: Bosworth & Harrison 1860. Small octavo pp viii 92 ii 93-108 very clean internally recently bound in simple boards with paper title label on the spine a very good copy. This copy is a curiosity of edition and pagination. The original work of 1860 seems to extend always to 92 pages. Our copy has an extra errata leaf unpaginated. This is then followed by a supplement paginated 93-108. Freeman 1325 mentions that the supplement was re-issued with the Flora and dated 1872. David McClintock's copy see Maggs Brothers Catalogue 1337 confirms the date as 1872 and comments "the author explains in his preface that he had 300 copies of the first edition left so he gave them a new title and added an 18pp supplement". But our copy definitely is the first printing and with a 16pp supplement. I offer no explanation !! But certainly in whatever form the supplement is rare. First Edition. Boards. Very Good. Darwin, Erasmus
The Botanic Garden; A Poem in Two Parts. Part I containing The Economy of Vegetation. Part II - The Loves of the Plants
St Paul's Churchyard London: J. Johnson 1791. Two volumes bound in one. Volume 1 - Second edition 1791. Volume 2 - Third edition 1791. Blanche Henrey 470 . Illustrated with two engraved allegorical frontispieces 18 engraved plates one of them folding - the Cypripedium plate which is often lacking - and two hand-coloured quarto pp xii 214 126 ii; x 197 both frontispieces and title pages browned and with some offsetting from plate to title the plates of the Portland Vase and the Fertilisation of Egypt similar this last plate by Blake after Fuseli; the remaining botanical plates clean lacking the corner of page 171/2 a relevant pencilled note at the base of one page a few pages with foxing but otherwise very clean and sound internally with the armorial bookplate of the Dowdeswell family Pull Court Worcestershire on the front endpaper together with a shelf label and a small newspaper clipping; the hand-colouring on the two plates is particularly attractive and there is also an extra engraved plate fixed to the verso of the first titlepage - a portrait of Darwin engraved by Haughton after Rawlinson - this has caused a little waving of the paper; contemporary full calf a little rubbed and scuffed rebacked the old spine laid down and with some wrinkling. Still a good sound copy. The first poem The Economy of Vegetation celebrates technological innovation scientific discovery and offers theories concerning contemporary scientific questions such as the history of the cosmos. The more popular Loves of the Plants promotes revises and illustrates Linnaeus's classification scheme for plants. One of the first popular science books the intent of The Botanic Garden is to pique readers' interest in science while educating them at the same time. By embracing Linnaeus's sexualized language which anthropomorphizes plants Darwin intended to make botany interesting and relevant to the readers of his time. Darwin emphasizes the connections between humanity and plants arguing that they are all part of the same natural world and that sexual reproduction is at the heart of evolution ideas that his grandson Charles Darwin would later turn into a full-fledged theory of evolution. This evolutionary theme continues in The Economy of Vegetation which contends that scientific progress is part of evolution and urges its readers to celebrate inventors and scientific discoveries in a language usually reserved for heroes or artistic geniuses. Darwin's attempt to popularize science and to convey the wonders of scientific discovery and technological innovation through poetry helped initiate a tradition of popular science writing that continues to the present day.
