Small thick quarto pp 12 520 26 illustrated with an engraved title page an engraved frontispiece though here bound in after the preliminary pages and 45 plates of 46 - lacking the plate which occupied pages 55/56 some age-toning and slight foxing throughout the plates a bit more browned but without the intense browning often found in this book overall quite tight internally one preliminary page and pages 395-398 protruding slightly and a little chipped and frayed at the margins full vellum binding probably original rather used and marked but quite sound and firm the upper and lower cover a bit warped and bowed the front hinge cracked but firm and showing traces of old glue. The first Italian edition. Ferrari 1584 - 1655 was an Italian Jesuit and professor in Rome and a botanist. He devoted himself till 1632 to the study and cultivation of ornamental plants and published De Florum Cultura which was illustrated with copperplates by amongst others Anna Maria Vaiani possibly the first female copper-engraver. The first book deals with the design and maintenance of the garden and garden equipment. The second book provides descriptions of the different flowers while the third book deals with the culture of these flowers. The fourth book continues with a treatise on the use and beauty of the flower species including their different varieties and mutations. The plants featured in Ferrari's research came from Cardinal Francesco Barberini's private botanical garden the Horti Barberini a garden which was under the care of Ferrari. Several Cape bulbs are illustrated for the first time - most notably Haemanthus coccinea but also Amaryllis bella-donna Brunsvigia orientalis and Ferraria crispa. Hunt Library Catalogue rather downbeat in its comment - "The fame rests more on the quality of the engraved plates than on their contribution to botanical knowledge". With signatures of J. Dixon Payne and of the botanist Ruby E. Dowling. RARE - ESPECIALLY IN ORIGINAL BINDING. De Candolle was also among the first to recognize the difference between the morphological and physiological characteristics of organs. He ascribed plant morphology as being related to the number of organs and their positions relative to each other rather than to their various physiological properties. Consequently this made him the first to attempt to attribute specific reasons for structural and numerical relationships amongst organs and thus to distinguish between major and minor aspects of plant symmetry. To account for modifications of symmetry in parts of different plants an occurrence that could hinder the discovery of an evolutionary relationship de Candolle introduced the concept of homology. De Candolle originated the idea of "Nature's war" which influenced Charles Darwin and the principle of natural selection. de Candolle recognized that multiple species may develop similar characteristics that did not appear in a common evolutionary ancestor; a phenomenon now known as convergent evolution. During his work with plants de Candolle noticed that plant leaf movements follow a near-24-hour cycle in constant light suggesting that an internal biological clock exists. Though many scientists doubted de Candolle's findings experiments over a century later demonstrated that "the internal biological clock" indeed exists. First British edition. Cloth. Good. RARE. The Vegetable Lamb of Tartary Latin: Agnus scythicus or Planta Tartarica Barometz is a legendary zoophyte of Central Asia once believed to grow sheep as its fruit. It was believed the sheep were connected to the plant by an umbilical cord and grazed the land around the plant. When all accessible foliage was gone both the plant and sheep died. Underlying the legend is the cotton plant which was unknown in Northern Europe before the Norman conquest of Sicily. The Hunt Library Catalogue - Number 474 - devotes four pages to the earlier printings of this work - "One of the most curious little books in the Collection or even in the demesne of bibliography". This copy has an article bound in at the rear entitled Botany; it has 127 pages is probably late-Victorian and I have not traced its source. First Edition. Cloth-backed boards. Good. S. Octavo pp xvi; lxxx 526 light foxing and blemishing with some light pencil marginalia contemporary full calf rubbed and scuffed with wear at the corners marbled endpapers. Edited by the Swiss botanist Paul Usteri and published within two years of the first edition. This copy was owned by the Scottish botanist and plant collector George Don - 1798-1856 - with his signature on the first blank. The pencil notes though look to be by another hand. In this study of flowering plants Jussieu adopted a methodology based on the use of multiple characters to define groups an idea derived from naturalist Michel Adanson. This was a significant improvement over the "artificial" system of Linnaeus whose most popular work classified plants into classes and orders based on the number of stamens and pistils. Jussieu did keep Linnaeus' binomial nomenclature resulting in a work that was far-reaching in its impact; many of the present-day plant families are still attributed to Jussieu. Morton's 1981 History of Botanical Science counts 76 of Jussieu's families conserved in the ICBN versus just 11 for Linnaeus for instance. Writing of the natural system Sydney Howard Vines remarked "The glory of this crowning achievement belongs to Jussieu: he was the capable man who appeared precisely at the psychological moment and it is the men that so appear who have made and will continue to make all the great generalisations of science.". The Syon Gardens copy with their stamps throughout. RARE. The extensive sketch of his life was written by his daughter. Knight was the brother of Payne Knight and the second President of the Royal Horticultural Society. Attention was first called to his work in 1795 by the publication of the results of his research into the propagation of fruit trees and the diseases prevalent among them. He used 10000 acres 4000 ha of land he inherited to conduct breeding of plants including strawberries cabbages and peas and built an extensive greenhouse. Knight performed basic physiological experiments on plants which work had been performed before only rarely. He elucidated the effects of gravity on seedlings and how decay in fruit trees was passed on by grafting. In many respects his work looked back to that of Rev. Stephen Hales. His goals were always strictly practical aiming to improve useful food plants by breeding for better qualities. The Downton strawberry was the ancestor of most important modern strawberries until recent times. It is not widely known that he studied variation in peas and found many of the same results as Mendel but he failed to make the same imaginative leap about how these changes took place. Knight intentionally shut himself off from outside scientific influences. He refused to read anyone else's scientific papers until Sir Joseph Banks with whom he had a voluminous correspondence persuaded him to do so. First Edition. Cloth. Fair. Almost certainly from the library of the Kew botanist and orchid specialist Robert Allen Rolfe. There is an inscription on the half-title " A Monsieur le Dr Rolfe hommage de l'auteur". Although Rolfe never had a doctorate as far as I can tell this may have been used by the author as a mark of respect for his eminence in the orchid world. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece 28 engraved plates octavo pp 14 two-page publisher's catalogue at the rear age-toning and some signs of use internally though this is usually restricted to the margins with the contemporary signature of V. Owen Smythe of Condover Park and loosely inserted is the later armorial bookplate of Reginald Cholmondeley of Condover Hall also loosely inserted is a further publishers' catalogue of 16 pages uncut and partially unopened the first page of which is detached; finely bound in full red crushed morocco with ornate gilt decoration on both covers the spine gilt with raised bands and a small black morocco label contained in a custom-made box of marbled paper over boards a red calf spine and cloth lined; the binder is not known but the inked initials "T.A.B. 1974" on the rear endpaper may identify them. From the library of the gardening historian Anthony Huxley with his stamp on the front endpaper. RARE. First published in 1767 the Sir John Soane Library suggests this is probably the third edition of this pattern book although the second could also be possible. Six volumes small octavo pp 588; 600 15; 584 10 uncut a few pages unopened a little age-toning and marking one gathering 347-350 in Volume IV detached and gatherings towards the rear of the volume becoming a bit weak and loose Volume VI has extra bis pages 343 - 354; very well illustrated with 197 engraved or wood engraved plates of which 31 are folding and 50 coloured plates of which 2 are folding and 1 folding table; bound in the original pink boards a bit worn chipped and marked original printed paper labels on the spines the upper cover of Volume V detached otherwise firm and tight a neat signature on each front endpaper. Apparently lacking one plate in Volume 1 Relative Sizes of the Planets though there is no sign of this ever having been bound in. There are several extra plates to those listed and our copy would seem to agree with the set at auction at Christie's in 2006 which contained 246 of 248 plates. A work of considerable charm and interest and despite some faults as mentioned a remarkable set in original unsophisticated state. Simeon Ackroyd Shaw 1785 - 1859 was a 19th-century English scientific writer industrial historian and teacher. He spent his working life in the Staffordshire Potteries now the city of Stoke-on-Trent England. Shaw originated in Lancashire and as a young man he arrived in the Potteries to work on the Potteries Gazette and Newcastle-under-Lyme Advertiser newspaper. After some 20 years of newspaper and printing work living in Wolstanton he then went into teaching. He ran several teaching academies in the district. His first book was this 6-volume work which was based on his obviously very comprehensive series of popular short lectures on everything from natural species to meteorites. First Edition. Boards. RARE. "The first substantial botanical book published in South Africa .and of a remarkably high standard" - Gunn & Codd. Harvey who was already planning his immense Flora Capensis hoped that the 'Genera' would "be sent to resident doctors clergymen etc scattered about the country to excite their idle minds to send specimens in to Cape Town.
