Burlington: Free Press Printing Co. The last 14 pages are a Supplement - Indices of States Places and Railroad Routes of Mexico. Pringle 1838 - 1911 was an American botanist who spent a career of 35 years cataloguing the plants of North America. He was a prolific collector and accomplished botanical explorer. In 1880 he received three commissions: collecting wood samples for the Jesup Collection under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History; exploring American forests and collecting data for a final report for the United States Census Bureau working for Charles Sprague Sargent; and general botanical collecting on behalf of Asa Gray. In 1884 he made a botanical survey of the northern portions of Arizona under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution. Pringle was appointed to the Gray Herbarium as a botanical collector in 1885 eventually making 39 expeditions to Mexico over the next 24 years. In April 1896 he was elected a member of the newly established New England Botanical Club and attended the meetings when in Boston. He was a charter member and later vice-president of the Vermont Botanical Club. During his 35 years of field work in the United States Canada and Mexico Pringle collected over 500000 specimens which included some 1200 species new to science. Anton von Storck 1731 - 1803 was an Austrian physician. Storck is remembered for his clinical research of various herbs and their associated toxicity and medicinal properties. His studies are considered to be the pioneering work of experimental pharmacology and his method can be regarded as forming a blueprint for the clinical trials of modern medicine. He was convinced that plants regarded as poisonous still had medicinal applications if employed in carefully controlled quantities. Störck was particularly interested in the medical possibilities of plants such as hemlock henbane jimsonweed and autumn crocus. His experiments with these plants involved a three-step process; initially used on animals followed by a personal trial and finally given to his patients all the while maintaining a "sliding-scale" approach to determine the optimum dosage. Störck's numerous Latin medical tracts detailing his experiments into the therapeutic effects of poisonous plants excited great interest and were translated into German French English Dutch and Portuguese rapidly becoming influential medical texts throughout Europe. Indeed the later miniaturist John Kay wrote that tulipomania was the cause of him parting with his estate at Crichton and the purchase of a smaller one. His divorce and expulsion from the Fellowship in the Royal Society has been blamed on the expenses he put into greenhouses and soil mixtures. A heavy set - extra postage will be needed. The Flora not unexpectedly is an unusual work. It is a labour of love clearly carried out unhurriedly in the tradition of those great botanical scholars Tackholm would emulate. It has been hailed as a model of scholarship and completeness. One special feature is the detailed treatment of the extensive ancient Egyptian tomb flora; another is the attention paid throughout the volumes to agriculturally important plants and economic botany. A heavy set - extra postage may be needed. Southern Africa is certainly not a naturally bounded area so that there are several possibilities for delineating it and concepts about its extent. Wellington discussed the various possibilities for delineation and suggested that one line stands out more clearly and definitely as a physical boundary than any other namely the South Equatorial Divide the watershed between the ZaIre Cuanza and Rufiji Rivers on the one hand and the Zambezi Cunene and Rovuma Rivers on the other. This South Equatorial Divide is indeed a major line of separation for some organisms and is also applicable in a certain geographical sense though it does not possess the slightest significance for many other groups of organisms ecosystems or geographical and physical features of Africa. The placing of the northern boundary of southern Africa differs in fact strongly per scientific discipline and is also influenced by practical considerations regarding the possibilities of scientific work as subordinate to certain political realities and historically grown traditions. This is illustrated for example in such works as the Flora of Southern Africa where the northern boundary of the area is conceived as the northern and eastern political boundaries of South West Africa South Africa and Swaziland. At the West-End of St Paul's London: W. Innys & R. Manby 1738. Third edition with amendments. Small octavo pp xiv 376 illustrated with 19 engraved plates small octavo pp xiv 376 slight signs of age-toning and dustiness but generall quite clean internally the front endpaper detached contemporary full calf poor the covers nearly detached. In Vegetable Staticks Hales studied transpiration - the loss of water from the leaves of plants. He estimated the surface area of the leaves of the plant and the length and surface area of the roots. This allowed Hales to compare the calculated influx of water into the plant with the amount of water leaving the plant by transpiration through the leaves. He also measured 'the force of the sap' or root pressure. Hales commented that "plants very probably draw through their leaves some part of their nourishment from the air". He prefigured the cohesion theory of water movement in plants although his ideas were not understood at the time so he did not influence the debate on water transport in plants in the 19th century. He also speculated that plants might use light as a source of energy for growth i.e. photosynthesis based on Isaac Newtons suggestion that "gross bodies and light" might be interconvertible. He also describes experiments that showed that "air freely enters plants not only with the principal fund of nourishment by the roots but also thro the surface of their trunks and leaves". While Hales work on the chemistry of air appears primitive by modern standards its importance was acknowledged by Antoine Lavoisier the discoverer of oxygen. Hales invention of the pneumatic trough to collect gases over water is also considered a major technical advance. In Rays time understanding of creation was governed by the account in the Bible. It was thought that the earth dated from about 5000BC and that fossils were formed in nature as imitations of shells fish or other creatures but were not a genuine creature. Rays observations of the changing coastlines around Britain and his fossil excavations led him to question both of these. He published his work on Fossils in his Miscellaneous Discourses 1692. The work quickly sold out and a considerably enlarged second edition with a new title was published the next year which is the copy we offer here . In particular he put forward that fossils were the remains of creatures that were now extinct going against the commonly held view that all creatures that God created at the beginning still existed. Thee volumes well illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece and 119 hand coloured plates as usual the plates are erratically bound but all are present all edges gilt in Volume 2 bound in modern blue cloth with only very slight signs of use. Despite the rather plain binding the contents are overall in remarkably bright condition. There is a little offsetting of plate on to text and occasionally of text on to plate but there are only six plates where this is really noticeable and of these plate 91 is rather poor. In Volume 1 the second plate is bound slightly on a skew so that the margin protrudes slightly at the top and fore-edge; in Volume 2 a number of the descriptive leaves are bound together at the end rather than opposite the plate they describe. Volume 3 concludes with Thortnon's "Sketch of the Life and Writings of the Late Mr William Curtis 33 pages. Ignoring the minor oddities of the set there is a remarkable freshness about the paper quality and the colouring. . First Edition. Cloth. Good. William Phillips Hardcover

Polish collector of insects and plants in Peru. Woytkowski emigrated to Peru in 1929 where he collected more than a thousand insect species new to science and copious botanical specimens. He together with his new wife Helena was lured to Peru by a settlement company whose advertisements promised free passage and a homestead farm. In reality after landing in Callao he found himself with hundreds of other Europeans in a shanty immigrant camp waiting in vain for their free land. While most gave up and returned to their homes Woytkowski decided to stay in Peru with Helena and their four-year-old son settling in Yamaquezù near Oxapampa where he established himself as a naturalist collecting insects and plants to send to scientists in the United States and Europe. He was for seven years employed exclusively by the Swiss pharmaceutical firm CIBA looking for plants that could be used in medicines and also served on the staff of San Marcos University as a professor of French and La Molina College of Agriculture in Lima. Here he built up an extensive herbarium though he was best known for his entomological collections. He made numerous trips into Peru's mountainous areas and explored all the country's provinces both independently and on behalf of research institutions including the University of California and Missouri Botanical Garden. Although successful in his collecting career his family life was somewhat unhappy due to his constant need to move around which led his wife to leave him in the 1940s. After more than 30 years collecting in Peru he was dealt another blow when he found he could not draw a small pension from the Botanic Garden in Lima as he had never taken Peruvian citizenship. He thus returned to Poland in 1965 by now a strange land to him. Removed from his life's work and suffering in the colder climate he died in Krakow where he had been staying with his brother. Numerous insects are named in his honour including a genus of army ants. The plant genus Woytkowskia Woodson is also named for him. This memoir was published in Polish in 1974. First English edition. The conclusion offers six pages of "General observations" on the care of potted plants. Published anonymously the author was Elizabeth Kent the sister-in-law of the writer Leigh Hunt. A duplicate from the Royal Horticultural Society Lindley Library with stamps and labels on the front endpaper but no other markings internally and none on the spine. With a dedication on the title page - "Alfred & Nora Hartley with kindest wishes from R.V. 21/XI/21". R.V. was Rupert Vallentin the artist's husband. Alfred Hartley was a notable artist and print-maker and was one of the illustrators of W.H. Hudson's "Idle Days in Patagonia". A publisher's note in the text was that a larger work was originally planned but Mrs Vallentin became too ill to continue and the illustrations were arranged with the help of Matilda Smith at Kew. . The book celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the Royal College of Physicians and the 400th Anniversary of the Colleges "Pharmacopoea Londinensis" - the first pharmacopoeia to be mandatory for a whole country. This book contains specially commissioned paintings and drawings and late medieval woodcuts of nearly 200 plants growing in the Medicinal Garden of the College which were ingredients in the Colleges Pharmacopoea of 1618. He was one of the six Austrian teachers invited by Amir Kabir the Persian chief minister as the instructors of Dar ul-Fonun the first modern higher education institution in Iran. By his own account he entered Iran on 24 November 1851 before the inauguration of the Dar ul-Fonun. From 1851 to 1860 he taught medicine at Dar ul-Fonun. In the beginning he taught in French and used a translator. Soon the incompetence of the translators motivated him to learn Persian. He learned Persian in six months and then taught his course in Persian. In 1885 he funded Otto Stapf a Viennese botanist to undertake a botanical expedition to South- and Western Persia.
