Oblong folio (ca. 530 x 695 mm). 2 vols. in one. 35 (instead of 38) numbered coloured lithographed double-page plates (including lithograph tile-pages). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards with giltstamped spine and spine-title. Fanciful reconstruction of the lost frescoes created by the ancient Greek painter Polygnotus in the Lesche of the Knidians in Delphi. Essentially "a product of pure fantasy in the late classicist style" (Thieme/B.), this splendid cycle shows scenes from Ulysses' Descent into the Underworld and the Sack of Troy. The illustrations were inspired by the careful description of Polygnotus' paintings as observed by the 2nd century traveller Pausanias, and were carried out by the German artist brothers Franz and Johannes Riepenhausen. As early as 1804, they had sent Goethe a series of 12 'Polygnotan' drawings which inspired his long essay on the work of Polygnotus in 1804. - The first part of the Riepenhausens' work was printed in 1805 in the form of outline etchings, containing only 15 plates showing the Sack of Troy; the second part, illustrating Ulysses' descent into Hades, appeared in 1826. The present edition is the first complete one. - Part II lacks plates X, XV and XVIII. Binding somewhat rubbed, paper somewhat foxed throughout; 5 plates in part II show a small marginal tear each, not touching image. A Jesuit library's ownership stamp to title-page. A fine copy. Nach einer durch Ehe und Geburt des Sohnes bedingten Bühnenabstinenz von knapp drei Jahren ging die Künstlerin seit 1850 wieder auf Tournee und war bis zu Beginn der 1880er Jahre mit großem Beifall auf europäischen und amerikanischen Bühnen zu sehen. An eine Baronin mit der Bitte, ihr hinsichtlich des Bezugs von deren Wohnung einen zeitlichen Aufschub von 24 Stunden zu gewähren, da sie nämlich erst am 16. dort einzuziehen würde. Sie habe immer geglaubt, daß sie am 14. abreise und am 15. ankomme, doch da sie noch ihren Arzt aufsuchen müsse, der seinerseits erst am 14. des Abends ankäme, so könne sie ihn erst am Tag darauf konsultieren und könne daher erst am 15. abreisen. To the scholar Théodore de la Rive with thanks for his book comprising the three lectures he gave on St Francis, which she will be happy to read as soon as she overcomes an eye infection. She regrets not seeing him in Italy that spring, but hopes he will shortly return to the country that inspired his work: "Je vous suis très reconnais[s]ante de votre aimable souvenir, et vous remercie infiniment pour votre charmante lettre et pour le volume des vos trois conférences sur St. François d'Assise, que je me rejouis de lire, dès que mes yeux fatigues par une fluxion qui m'a tourmenté dernièrement, me le permettrent. Interesting correspondence with friends in French and Italian, outlining remarkable points of her career. - To the financier and journalist Émile Pereire (1800-75), hoping he might be able to attend one of her last performances before her depature for New York aboard a ship operated by his "Compagnie Générale Transatlantique": "Avant de partir pour l'Amerique je jouerai encore deux fois à Paris [...] Il me serait du meilleur augure si vous assistiez à une de ces représentations. J'espère que vous le pourrez [...] Je partirai pour New-York le 1er Septembre sur la ligne crée par vous, et sur le bateau qui porte votre nom. Je ne pourrais quitter l'Europe sous des meilleurs orpices [...]" (Paris, 20 June 1866). On mourning paper with embossed monogram. - Two letters in Italian, one to the librettist Jacopo Ferretti (1784-1852) about an illness from which she hopes to recover through a change of air, the other to a friend asking her to translate some articles about her performance as Maria Stuart, mentioning that she feels like a fish out of water when removed from Paris, complaining about the German ways, and concluding with a description of her encounter with the queen of Holland in Stuttgart, who complimented her on her performance: "A Stuttgart fui colmato di attenzioni dalla Corte. La regina d'Olanda, figlia del rè del Wurttemberg si trovava a la invisita e dopo il largo alto di Stuarda mi mandò il suo ciambellano per manifestar mi tutta la sue ammirazione [...]" (Frankfurt, 23 Sept. 1856). On mourning paper. - To the writer Paul de Saint-Victor (1827-81) with best wishes for the New Year: "Or permettez que j'en suive l'impultion en vous offrant les voeux de bonne année que je forme pour vous, et vous priant de croire qu'ils sont sinceres [...]" (Turin, 23 Dec. 1855).
