‎"OXHOLM, PETER LOTHARIUS.‎

Uncut, partly unopened, in contemporary (original?) marbled boards. Part of spine missing and wrappers very loose. Internally with very light occassional brownspotting. 84 pp. + four folded plates, each with the accompanying ""Plan""-leaf (complete).‎

‎First edition of Oxholm's early and important work on the state of the West Indies in which he describes the government loans to planters to buy slaves in the ten years from 1792 until abolition of the trade in 1802 and the effects of British imports on the price and quality of slaves. ""Denmark acquired St. Croix from France in 1733. Oxholm was a young Danish officer sent to the Danish West Indies in 1778 to map all the fortifications in the islands, suggest improvements, and estimate their cost. He was also to create topographic maps of the islands of St. Thomas and St. John. He mapped only St. John, but presented numerous drawings and maps at the Danish court where his work was approved and rewarded. Having married into a St. Croix family, he returned there and became a sugar planter. In 1794 he privately published a detailed map of St. Croix that he had created."" (John Russell Bartlett Collection)""Lieutenant Oxholm was a promising young man of 24 when he was sent to the Danish possessions in The West Indies. Oxholm’s task was to examine the ability of the colony to defend itself against attack and draw new maps of St. Thomas and St. John. But Oxholm was an enterprising man and he also examined a number of issues that he had not been tasked to deal with at all. The political situation of the colony, conditions for soldiers and enslaved laborers, health care and conditions for prisoners and lepers, organization of the sugar trade and the schools were all described. Oxholm became an advocate of slavery that he believed was necessary for the economy of the colony. But he was critical of the miserable living conditions of enslaved laborers, soldiers, and the sick.Oxholm’s maps were of high quality and impressively accurate. Some have been in use almost up until the present day. Today, his maps and drawings are considered by the Danish Ministry of Culture to be of “unique national importance”. Oxholm also left behind a number of reports and books about conditions in the Danish colony in the West Indies. The most important one is his book on the state of the West Indies, De danske vestindiske Øers Tilstand i Henseende til Population, Cultur og Finance-Forfatning (""The State of the Danish West Indian Islands with Respect to Population, Culture and Financial Condition"") from 1797, containing both descriptions and illustrations of plantation operations in the colony. Oxholm also wrote several debate pieces where, among other things, he defended the slave trade as late as 1806. Oxholm’s energy did not diminish, and right up until his death he continued making maps and drawings and suggesting improvements to conditions in the Danish colony in the West Indies."" ‎Beskrivelse over Eylandet St. Croix i America i Vest=Indien. (i.e. English: ""Description of the Island of St. Croix in America in the West Indies""). - [EARLIEST ACCOUNT OF ST. CROIX UNDER DANISH RULE]‎

‎Kjøbenhavn, L.H. Lillies Enke, 1758. 4to (203 x 160mm). In a very nice contemporary half calf binding with five raised bands and gilt ornamentation to spine. Lower compartment of spine with some loss of leather. Marbled boards with wear. End-papers renewed but with near contemporary paper. Previous owner's name to title-page. Internally very nice and clean. 72 pp.‎

‎The extremely scarce first edition of the first printed account of the island of St. Croix under Danish rule. It contain descriptions of the geology, topography and natural history and present detailed descriptions of sugar cultivation and production and the conditions of the slaves. Haagensen settled on the island immediately after Danish occupation (1733) as plantation owner and Danish official. In 1725, St. Thomas Governor Frederik Moth encouraged the Danish West Indies Company's directors to consider purchasing Saint Croix (then known as Santa Cruz). On 15 June 1733, France and Denmark-Norway concluded a treaty by which the Danish West India Company bought Saint Croix for 750,000 livres. Louis XV ratified the treaty on 28 June, and received half the payment in French coins, with the remaining half paid in 18 months. On 16 November 1733, Moth was named the first Danish governor of Saint Croix. The 1742 census lists 120 sugar plantations, 122 cotton plantations, and 1906 slaves, compared to 360 whites on the island. By 1754, the number of slaves had grown to 7,566. That year, King Frederick took direct control of Saint Croix from the company. For nearly 200 years, Saint Croix, St. Thomas and St. John were known as the Danish West Indies. By the mid to late 18th century, ""at the peak of the plantation economy, the enslaved population of Saint Croix numbered between 18,000 and 20,000, the white population ranging between 1,500 and 2,000"". (Loftsdóttir, Kristin, and Gísli Pálsson, ""Black on White: Danish Colonialism, Iceland and the Caribbean""). In 1916, Denmark sold Saint Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John to the United States, formalizing the transfer in the Treaty of the Danish West Indies, in exchange for a sum of US$25 million in gold. The present work eventually appeared in three volumes in 1721 (The present), 1739 and 1740, however, when this first volume was published in 1721 it was intended to a single-volume work and it is a separate work in itself – 18 years was to pass until a second volumes was published.‎

‎"[EHRENSVÄRD, CARL AUGUST].‎

‎Resa til Italien, 1780, 1781, 1782. Skrifven 1782 i Stralsund. Ny Upplaga.‎

‎Stockholm, Tryckt Hos Carl Deleen, 1819. Clean and well-preserved copy bound in contemporary half calf with gilt and blind tooled decorations on spine. Old name on title-page. An exceptionally fine copy. (4), 84 pp. + 38 handcoloured plates.‎

‎A wonderful copy of the second illustrated (fourth overall) edition of what is considered the most beautiful Swedish book of the 18th century, which is exceedingly difficult to find in as excellent state as here, the first and second editions being equally fine. ""The book consists of notes by Admiral Count Ehrensvärd, critic and antiquarian, on his visit to Italy, with plates engraved after his own drawings. Ehrensvärd's route ran from Stralsund via Paris, Milan, Terracina and Rome to Sicily, and from Sicily via Montecassino, Bologna, Milan, Venice and Vienna to Stralsund. Ehrensvärd declares at the outset that his descriptions would be too short - had not others' been too long. But, though he pointedly avoids eulogizing famous sites, he takes a less unconventional stance in continually idealising southern over northern peoples, on the grounds of their resemblance to the supposed physical and cultural character of the ancients. He concludes with an account of some monuments at Rome and Naples - approving the ancient Romans for their good taste. Most plates show landscapes or local people, and are related to passages in the text where the author declares their dress, hairstyles and general bearing to recall those of the ancient world. They are simple outline etchings, possibly intended to be coloured subsequently (all have been coloured by hand in the Royal Academy's copy). The engraver, Elias Martin, had been drawing-master to Count Ehrensvärd. Between 1768 and 1780 and again between 1788 and 1791 he lived in Britain, a friend of William Chambers, who had been born in Sweden, was a Swedish speaker and throughout his life maintained links with Swedish artists and patrons. Martin became a student at the Royal Academy in 1769, and an Associate in 1771. Influenced by Richard Wilson and Paul Sandby, he became a well-known landscape-painter both in Britain and in Sweden."" (RA) The plates carry no engraved signatures. But in the Royal Academy's copy the first plate (facing p.3) has been inscribed in ink, 'Count Ehrenswärd invt.' bottom left and 'E. Martin. the Associate, sculpt.' bottom right"" and the remainder, 'A.E.' bottom left and 'E.M.' bottom right (with page and line references to the text). ""The question of who made the etchings is open to different opinions. The brothers Elias and Johan Fredrik Martin, both important artists, have been mentioned as Mårten Rudolf Heland."" (Lindberg). Most of the original drawings are preserved in the Royal Academy of Arts, Stockholm, and in the Swedish National Museum. Lindberg, Swedish Books, 52 (first edition, 1786). ‎Vol. 9 of Salmon's extensive 'Modern History' containing information and maps on Austria, French Netherlands, Switzerland and nothern parts of Italy. Salmon’s ""Modern History” is an ambitious attempt to provide a comprehensive account of the world’s countries, their histories, and their contemporary states during Salmon’s time and stands as a monumental achievement in the history of 18th-century historiography. His work is a fine example of the Enlightenment's goal for cataloging and comprehending the world, offering a unique snapshot of global perspectives as understood by Europeans in the early modern period. It represents one of the earliest comprehensive attempts to document and analyze the state of nations worldwide.‎
