Last edition recorded by Almack. The three-quarter folding plate, with Explanation at foot, was reproduced specially for this edition. Scott's text is taken from Stewart's 1879 issue [Almack, 72]. AN EDITION DOUBLY REMARKABLE FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE AUTHORIAL DEBATE, FOR IN ADDITION TO SCOTT'S NOTABLE PREFACE IT CONTAINS THE SLIP ANNOUNCING MARSH'S DISCOVERY (22 MARCH) OF THE HOLOGRAPH SECOND PRAYER. [In the preface itself], written in answer to Richard Garnett, Scott accepts all Wordsworth's conclusions in favour of the King. He publishes, from the Nicholas Papers in the BL, correspondence relating to the French edition of de Marsyr [Almack, 56]; and notes by the King in a copy of Bacon's Advancement of Learning, 1640, also in the BL...' (Madan). SUCH IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS ESSAY THAT ALMACK REPRINTS IT IN FULL IN HIS BIBLIOGRAPHY (pp.123-142) - IT IS THE SOLE ITEM OF SCHOLARSHIP TO BE THUS INCLUDED. The arguments of Scott and Phillimore were criticised in the Athaneum, nos. 2744 and 2746, May-June 1880. Almack, 76; Madan, 79.
