‎First appearance of Chancourtois's historical paper in which he conceived a way to arrange the chemical elements in a periodic manner, years before Mendelejeff and Lothar Meyer. He arranged the elements on a cylinder in the order of atomic weight. This importent paper was never published in full, but only as abstracts as offered here. His principle of the periodicity of the elements remained unnoticed until the first communication (of April 7) was translated by P.J. Hartog in Nature in 1889 under the title ""A Foreshadowing of the periodic law"".""Generalizing further from Élie’s ideas, Béguyer formulated a method for classifying chemical elements based ""in the last analysis upon the distribution of these elements in the crust of the globe."" His scheme, a precursor of the periodic table, was put forth in ""Vis tellurique, classement des corps simples ou radicaux au moyen d’une système de classification helicoïdal et numérique"" (1862). The model for his theory was the ""telluric screw,"" a helical graph wound about a cylinder. The base of the cylinder was divided by sixteen equally spaced points, and the screw thread was similarly divided on each of its turns"" the seventeenth point was on the second turn directly above the first, the eighteenth above the second, and so forth. Each point was supposed to represent the ""characteristic number"" of some element that could be deduced from its physical properties or chemical characteristics. Actually, Béguyer used unit equivalent weights as characteristic numbers, following Prout, who made hydrogen the unit. ""The subject originated in a memoir of 1858 (the paper offered) and grew directly out of simple observations on the way in which the transformations (linear) of the theory of algebraic invariants are combined...a distinctive feature of these rules is that multiplication is not commutative...we get different results according to the order in which we do the multiplication... (it) seems about as far from anything of scientific or practical use as anything could possible be. This process of liquefaction of oxygene was achieved independently, in the same year, by Cailletet and Pictet, using different methods. Cailletet used the Joule-Thomson effect"" oxygen was cooled while highly compressed, then allowed to rapidly expand, cooling it further, resulting in the production of small droplets of liquid oxygen. Pictet's method was more elaborate, using compounds pumps. ‎First appearance of a milestonepaper in chemistry in which Cailletet describes his invention of the liquedifaction-process of oxygen and 5 other gases - and a classic in Low-Temperature Chemistry.""Cailletet is most famous for his investigations on the compression and liquefaction of gases. At the time there were still six gases that were considered permanen: oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, nitrogen dioxyde, acrbon monooxide, and acetylene. Liquefaction had not been achieved despite the use of what were considered ernomous pressures. At the end of 1877 and the beginning of 1878 Callitet liquefied all these gases shortly before Raoul Pictet, who employed a completely different procedure. Cailletet had, following Andrews, recognized the importence of the critical temperature, above which liquefaction of a gas does not take place. In order to produce the necessary ccoling, he had recourse to expansion, sometimes employing several expansions in a staged process. It was in this manner that he succeeded in liquefying oxygen by beginning with liquid ethylene and passing through the stage of liquid methane.""(DSB III, pp. 11-12). ‎First German edition of Cavendish's famous paper in which he calculated the weight of the earth and determined its mass. He also, as the first, observed gravitational motion of minute portions of matter. He estimates the earth's mass to 6,6 x 10 to the potential of 24 kg. The original paper ""Experiments to determine the Density of the Earth"" appeared in Philosophical Transaction, 1798.""Cavendish published five papers between 1784 and 1809...With one exception they were comparatively minor productions....The exception was his determination of the density of the earth or weighing of the world in 1798, by means of John Michell's torsion balance. The apparatus consisted of two lead balls on either end of a suspended beam" these movable balls were attracted by a pair of stationary lead balls. Cavendish calculated the the force of attraction between the balls fro the observed period of oscillation of the balance and deduced the density of the earth from the force. He found it to be 5.48 times that of water. Cavendish was the first to observe gravitational motions induced by comparatively minute portions of ordinary matter...By weighing the world he rendered the law of gravitation complete. The law was no longer a proportionally statement but a quantitatively exact one" this was the most importent addition to the science of gravitation since Newton.""(DSB III, p. 158.).‎

From 1861 to 1869 he was the victim of one of the most clever and prolific of literary forgers, Denis Vrain-Lucas. Chasles bought thousands of manuscripts, including a correspondence between Isaac Newton, Blaise Pascal, and Robert Boyle which established that Pascal had anticipated Newton in the discovery of the law of universal gravitation. Chasles presented these letters to the Academy in 1867 and took an active part in the furor that ensued (1867-1869), vigorously defending the genuineness of the letters. In 1869 Vrain-Lucas was brought to trial and convicted. Chasles was forced to testify and had to admit to having purchased letters allegedly written by Galileo, Cleopatra, and Lazarus, all in French."" (DSB).‎

‎First printing of the 3 main papers in the famous Helmholtz-Clausius controversy about the principle of the ""Conservation of Energy"". His reply to Clausius contains very importent additons to his conservation law, as it clarifies his use of the concepts of ""energy"", ""vis viva"", ""electrical tension"" , ""potentials"" etc.Helmholtz famous work Über die Erhaltung der Kraft"" from 1847 gave the first comprehensive statement of the first law of thermodynamics: All modes of energy, heat, light, electricity, and all chemical phenomena, are capable of transformation from one to the other but are indestructible and cannot be created. Clausius (in the papers offere) critized helmholtz on his theory of heat over the consistency of the physical interpretation and of the use mathematics. He argued that Helmholtz's demonstration of his conservation law was valid only for Helmholtz's particulat model of matter, and that he had not understood the notion of the potential. This criticism lead Helmholtz expand and clarify the central concepts of physics, importent steps in the history of theoretical physics.‎

‎First appearance of Clausius first paper on electrodynamics in which he replaced Weber's Law with another that would not give an unwanted force between charge and current.""Clausius’ major effort in mathematical physics after 1875 involved his quest for an adequate electrodynamic theory. He spelled out the fundamental tenets to his approach in 1875: (Weber’s law was incorrect for the case where only one kind of electricity is assumed to move, since the equation entails that a current exert a force on a charge at rest" (2) a revision would be possible if one assumed that the electrodynamic action occurred via an intervening medium, for then electric particles that are not moving relative to each other (moving at equal velocities) could still exert forces on one another by virtue of their absolute motion in the medium" forces should not be restricted to the line joining two charges. In 1876 Clausius simplified the equation he had previously proposed by subjecting it to the condition of the conservation of energy. In doing so, however, he ignored the possibility that energy changes might occur in the intervening medium.""(DSB).‎

‎First printing of this milestone paper in thermodynamics, which together with his paper from 1850, established the second law of thermodynamics. In the offered paper Clausius introduces the symbol T for the universal function of temperature (a + 1) and he introduces the concept of ""entropy"" (the greek word for 'transformation'), but without using the word (Clausius introduced the word later in 1865), he calls this new theorem ""the principle of the equivalence of transformations"". ‎First printing of this milestone paper in quantum physics in which Compton verifies Planck's quantum postulate and found that some of the X-rays had, in scattering, lenghtened their wavelenght. This phenomena was called the ""Compton Effect"" in his honour. For this discovery Compton received the Nobel prize in physics in 1927.""Compton was able to account for this (lenghtening of wavelenght) by presuming that a photon of light struch an electron, which recoiled, subtracting some energy from the photon and therefore increasing its wavelenght. This made it seem that a photon acted as a particle: thus after more than a century, the particulate natuer of light, as evolved by Newton, was revived...
