[The Grateful Dead] Hunter, Robert
The Silver Snarling Trumpet. The Birth of the Grateful Dead. The Lost Manuscript of Robert Hunter.
New York:: Hachette Books 2024. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. The Silver Snarling Trumpet is both a novelistic singular work of art and the missing piece of the Grateful Dead origin story. In these pages we are privy to the early days of Hunter Garcia and their cohorts who sit at coffee shops passing around a single cup of bottomless coffee because they lacked the funds for more than one. Follow these truth-seeking souls into the stacks at Kepler’s Books renting instruments at Swain’s House of Music and through the countryside on mind-expanding road trips. Witness impromptu jams inspired intellectual pranks and a dialogue that is by turns amusing and brilliant and outrageous. Hunter shares his impressions of his first gig with Garcia for a college audience along with descriptions of his most intense dreams and psychedelic explorations. All of it enlivened by Hunter’s visionary spirit and profound ideas about creativity and collaboration. Hachette Books, unknown

[THE GREAT GAME] YOUNGHUSBAND, SIR FRANK
Geographical Results of the Tibet Mission.
Washington.: Smithsonian Institution. 1905. Disbound report from the Annual Report for the Smithsonian Institution: pp 265-277 8 black and white photographic plates 22.5 x 14.7 cms front leaf loose age-toning and inner edge a trifle marked but otherwise in very good condition. Sir Francis Younghusband 1863-1942 returned to a hero's welcome following his Tibet "Expedition" of 1903-4 which was in reality a militarized diplomatic mission driven by geopolitical anxiety the Great Game and was marked by dramatic clashes and some 2700 Tibetan casualties. This report was originally read at the Royal Geographical Society in London in February 1905 here reprinted from a Smithsonian Annual Report of the same year and was widely reviewed. One such appearing in "Nature" belied the military truths: <br>"Younghusband was also able to touch briefly upon some of the results obtained by the scientific experts who accompanied the mission as well as by the survey party under Captains Rawling and Ryder which in the late autumn did excellent work along the whole course of the Upper Brahmaputra proving definitely that no peaks higher than Everest exist on this flank of the Himalayas." . [THE GREAT TURKISH WAR].
Bordeaux: Pierre Abegou 1687. Marbled wrappers. 4to. With an inserted latter engraved frontispiece portrait of the Polish King Jan III Sobieski engraved by F. Jollain. Very rare pamphlet published during the European wars against Turkey with a frontispiece portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Léopold I 1640-1705 Archduke of Austria and King of Bohemia and Hungary. He succeeded his father Ferdinand III in 1657 and immediately had to fight against the Turks in the Great Turkish War also known as the War of the Holy League 1683-1699. This war finally led to the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699.This work gives directions and arrangements for ritual processions that the Turkish Sultan Suleiman III ordered after his victories during the so-called Holy Wars against the Christians. It is of great importance for our understanding of the problematic Turkish-European relations during the 17th century especially as an interesting example of counter-propaganda. One of Suleiman IIIs directions presented in the book for example ordered that one Christian slave or one Jew was to be killed every fifteen minutes as part of the procession. One can imagine the reaction of a Christian reading this text: although the crusades were over this could provoke war and violence between the parties.Wrappers worn and somewhat frayed a few worm holes but still in good condition.l Bibliotheca bibliographica Aureliana CX XVIIe siècle XIV Bordeaux 2176 not mentioning the portrait; cf. [The Gypsy]
The Gypsy. Volume 1 Number 1 May 1915
London: The Pomegranate Press 1916. 3rd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London The Pomegranate Press 1916 third edition/ 1915. Quarto 90 pages with numerous decorations and 11 illustrations plus the printed covers with advertisements on the outside rear one. Many of the illustrations including the cover and title page are by Allan Odle; Charles Conder Nina Hamnett Ambrose McEvoy and Albert Rothenstein have each contributed one. Flush-cut two-colour pictorial boards a little marked with a later cloth spine and inner-hinge reinforcement; extremities a little bumped and nicked; first and last pages a little tanned; minor signs of age and use; a very good copy. The foreword states that 'In presenting to the public a New Quarterly Magazine we are aware of the fact that in these days half the world is at war'. This may account for the fact that the only other number to appear came out a year later in May 1916. Literary contributors to this number include Edmund Gosse Arthur Machen Walter de la Mare Arthur Symons and A.E. Waite. The top half of the publisher's advertisement on the rear cover is devoted to both numbers of 'The Gypsy' with quotes from several reviews of Number 1. 'Very much in "the Savoy's" atmosphere of artistic naughtiness: there are poems about courtesans and strange pictures with a good deal of the nude in them and an "impression" of Baudelaire and a paper on the beneficent effects of drugs and whisky. This violent and various Mr. Alan sic Odle who flings his riotous brutalities so hotly upon so many of its pages. The literary matter includes an interesting article by Mr. Edmund Gosse' 'The Times'. Condition is fair to good with multiple small tears and fold weaknesses that would benefit from conservation.</p> <p>Missouri Mars Mormons and Mark Twain —captured in a rare surviving issue of The Osceola Herald a Reconstruction-era Missouri newspaper. </p> <p>The front page features a vignette attributed to Mark Twain a report on Mormon leadership under Brigham Young and a scientific discussion on Martian meteorology. Beneath the masthead is an Abraham Lincoln quote: “Let us have faith that Right makes Might; and in that Faith let us to the end dare to do our duty as we understand it.â€</p> <p>The spurious Mark Twain passage evokes a tranquil evening scene reflecting on domestic life and the close of the day “Mark Twain says: ’Tis evening. The rich glow of the sinking sun casts athwart the little cottage doorway a mellow golden light that enriches and inspires the scene…â€. The Mormon report covers a Salt Lake City conference where church leaders including Brigham Young and George Q. Cannon defended their settlement in Utah against federal scrutiny. Young denounced U.S. officials as “tools of the devil†and called for divine retribution. The article on Mars examines contemporary observations of cloud formations and atmospheric changes seen through telescopes.</p> <p>Via CLARENCE AAS reports six issues from 1870 but none from this year. [the Honourable Artillery Company; Bunhill Fields; the City of London; military drill manual; the British Army]:
Military Original watercolour illustration with measurements captioned 'Drill Motions' and docketed 'Drill Motions at Bunhill Fields'.
Anonymous and undated. Circa 1810. On one side of a piece of wove paper roughly 28.5 x 24 cm. On aged somewhat grubby paper with 6 cm closed tear repaired with tape on reverse. Full-length diagrammatic depiction of a British army officer in uniform of the Napoleonic period black boots with spurs tight white breeches green jacket with yellow trim and black hat with red plume holding his sword horizontally in front of his face. A set of thirteen numbered angles are projected from the tip of the blade some bracketed 'all these are strait in Front'. Others are described as 'flat'. Captioned at head 'Drill Motions.' The numbering and handwriting would appear to be in a hand contemporary with the plate but the item is either a forgery or it has been touched up in recent decades as the border plume and some highlighting would appear to be in red felt-tip pen. Docketed at the foot in a twentieth-century hand 'DRILL MOTIONS AT BUNHILL FIELDS.' The Honourable Artillery Company the oldest regiment in the British Army has its old parade ground abutting Bunhill Fields near the City of London. Anonymous and undated. [Circa 1810?] unknown

[The Ink Spots]
The Ink Spots Three original promotional photos
N.p.: N.p. 1965. Three vintage promotional photographs of the African American harmony quartet The Ink Spots. <br /> <br /> A look at a musical group that was not only internationally famous in its time but greatly influenced multiple musical genres. The first sepia photograph dates to circa late 1930s during the group's first decade a promotional shot of the group singing for National Broadcasting Company NBC radio. <br /> <br /> The second photo a master print for a flyer advertises the group circa 1952 when they recorded two LPs for Verve at the Mapes Casino in Reno Nevada. <br /> <br /> The third photo circa 1960s advertises the group in one its many final incarnations in which only founding member Bernie Mackey was still in the group. <br /> <br /> The Ink Spots formed in the early 1930s in Indianapolis. The group not only incorporated four-part harmony but each played an instrument cello-as-bass tenor guitar guitar and ukelele incorporating the vocals and instrumentation into a seamless whole. <br /> <br /> The band's sound was a major influence on doo-wop rhythm and blues and rock music. The core group remained essentially intact during their most popular decades 1930s and early 1940s but due to the war in 1942 and the death of a founding member in 1944 various "sanctioned" substitutions for members of the group began to take place and the identity of the group dispersed into public domain. <br /> <br /> The Ink Spots were awarded a plaque from the Negro Actors Guild for their efforts in breaking down racial prejudice. The original group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. <br /> <br /> All photographs 8 x 10 inches. Very Good to Near Fine. N.p. unknown

[The Jewish Origin Letter of George Washington's promise to give "to bigotry no sanction"] Carey, Mathew, editor [Seixas, Moses]
THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OR UNIVERSAL MAGAZINE FOR JUNE 1791. INCLUDING IN APPENDIX II PUBLIC PAPERS P 40: "ADDRESS OF THE HEBREW CONGREGATION IN NEWPORT RHODE-ISLAND TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AUGUST 17 1790" BY MOSES SEIXAS
Philadelphia: Mathew Carey; Carey Stewart and Co. No. 188 Market-street 1791. Original Sewn Binding without outer wrappers or boards 8vo pages 285-344 1-48 1-40 1-48 total 196 pages with different sections correctly paginated for this issue.<br> With Moses Seixas’ famous letter to President George Washington<br> Seixas wrote to President Washington on behalf of the Newport congregation whose home is the Touro Synagogue the oldest synagogue still standing in America. This letter which appears on p 40 of Appendix II and Washington's reply comprise one of the most famous statements on religious freedom of this period. <br> Here published in America’s first literary magazine George Washington’s famous phrase describing a government that "gives to bigotry no sanction and to persecution no assistance" was originally coined by Seixas in this very letter. It is a moving Biblically toned greeting to the president and was repeated by Washington in his reply assuring it a place among the most cherished in the American historical vocabulary.<br> George Washington's visit to Newport Rhode Island August 17-18 1790 ranks among the seminal episodes in the history of American Jewish religious liberty. Washington left Rhode Island off his travel itinerary the previous year in response to the state's failure to ratify the Constitution. By 1790 after becoming the last state to ratify Washington visited Newport along with members of his administration including Thomas Jefferson. <br> Moses Seixas 1744-1809 a Newport merchant warden of Kaal Kadosh Yeshuat Israel Newport Hebrew Congregation and a prominent Mason was one of the civic leaders who met with Washington. Seixas had a long history as a revolutionary patriot: he remained in the city after it was occupied by the British during the war and signed a document during the occupation pledging loyalty to the patriotic cause. <br> Additionally his brother Rabbi Gershon Mendes Seixas minister of New York's Shearith Israel Congregation known as the "patriot rabbi" was one of fourteen clerygymen officiating at Washington's 1789 Presidential inauguration. <br> Finally as a fellow Mason he and Washington would have had a natural connection. Seixas' eloquent message reads in part: <br> "Deprived as we heretofore have been of the invaluable rights of free Citizens we now with a deep sense of gratitude to the Almighty Disposer of all events behold a Government erected by the MAJESTY OF THE PEOPLE – a Government which to bigotry gives no sanction to persecution no assistance – but generously affording to ALL Liberty of conscience and immunities of Citizenship: – deeming every one of whatever Nation tongue or language equal parts of the great governmental Machine: – This so ample and extensive Federal Union whose basis is Philanthropy Mutual confidence and Public Virtue we cannot but acknowledge to be the work of the Great God who ruleth in the Armies of Heaven and among the Inhabitants of the Earth doing whatever seemeth him good." <br> Grounding religious freedom in natural rights and echoing Seixas' words Washington later replied with an echo of Seixas' language regarding religious freedom: <br> "The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy: a policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that toleration is spoken of as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States which gives to bigotry no sanction to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens in giving it on all occasions their effectual support."<br> See JE Vol. IX pp. 294-295; EJ. Vol. XIV p. 1117; J.L. Blau and S.W. Baron The Jews of the United States 1790-1840 A Documentary History Vol. 1 1963 pp. 8-10.<br> Other pieces of interest include notes on the slave trade by Benjamin Franklin and notes on the Revolutionary War. <br> “The American Museum or Repository of Ancient and Modern Fugutive Pieces &c. Prose and Poetical “title changed to “The American Museum or Universal Magazine†in January 1790 was America's first literary magazine featuring early printings of the US Constitution the Bill of Rights various State constitutions Alexander Hamilton's Report on Manufactures and parts of the Federalist Papers. <br> Complete issue in original sewn binding. Overall condition is very good with scattered darkening and foxing though paper and binding remain nice and strong with clean crisp edges including the notable page containing the address to Washington<br> A Cornerstone of American Judaica.
