‎UNIQUE single volume featuring only the plates from Pierre François Tissot's popular work "Trophées des Armées Français". The book, published around 1820, described the French victories during the French revolutionary wars, and was accompanied by b&w engravings made by the artist Edme Bovinet and F. L. Couché fils. These engravings, 70 in number, comprise this volume, and depict scenes of famous land and naval battles, sieges and conquests. The volume features no title page. The only text present in the book are the image captions, and the occasional mention of a famous general present in a battle. 150x230mm. Unpaginated (70 plates). Black quarter-cloth Hardocver. Cover and cover edges slightly worn. Cover corners bumped and peeling. Small sticker on front cover. Spine edges and front hinge peeling. Ornate stickers on both endpapers. Binding slightly loose, several plates partly loose from binding. Pages yellowing and age-stained. [SUMMARY]: Save for the aforementioned wear, this one of a kind volume featuring valuable engravings of the Napoleonic wars, is in good condition.‎

‎* Thomas Körner (* 30. Januar 1960 in Säckingen), alias TOM, ist ein deutscher Cartoonist. Sein Comic-Strip Touché erscheint seit 1991 täglich in der taz. Körners Schwerpunkt ist die Situationskomik. Körner wuchs in Lörrach auf, verbrachte viel Zeit im Schwimmbad und machte am Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium sein Abitur. Er lebt seit 1981 in Berlin und studierte Politik. Im Alter von 30 Jahren entschied er sich für den Beruf des Comic-Zeichners. Nach eigenen Angaben denkt Thomas Körner mittlerweile über alles, was er sieht, wie in seinen Comic-Strips nur noch in drei Bildern. The author Zacharias Topelius 1818-1898 through his work as a writer journalist and professor of history played a pivotal role in the creation of the Finnish identity in the 19th century. En Resa i Finland Travel in Finland employs illustrations by the most famous Finnish artists of the time. The beautiful steel-engraved plates are based on original paintings by Berndt Lindholm A. v. Becker B. Reinhold Hjalmar Munsterhjelm Karl Emanuel Jansson Robert Wilhelm Ekman J. Knutson W. Holmberg Oslar Kleineh and Albert Edelfelt. Originally issued in parts in 1872 and 1873 this copy was apparently taken to the binder without the title page and 8 preliminary pages. The text is in Swedish. The plates were engraved by A. Weger and are captioned in Finnish Swedish and French. This is the first edition not the modern reprint. In Very Good Condition: corners rubbed; cover slightly soiled; spine faded; corners of a few leaves faintly dampstained not impacting image or text; light foxing on a few plates; otherwise clean and bright. These hand make prints are used for the Lunar New Year cele- bration of "Tet" in Vietnam. They are displayed inside homes and by doors to invoke or exclude what is depicted in the prints in the hopes of gaining good luck good fortune and a good social life in the New Year. These prints were made in Dung Ho village about 30 miles North of Hanoi and have been made there for hundreds of years. Hand-made printed in color by hand on woodblockss. Louis-Philippe is compared to the late mediaeval king Louis XI, notorious for his cunning and cruelty. The print represents a pseudo- mediaeval execution scene with Liberty in a white dress and red cap standing in front of the gallows flanked by jailors. Louis-Philippe wearing a helmet with chain-mail is shown from behind standing on top of the dungeons of Ste Pelagie giving final instructions. To the left, lecherous monks and gloating courtiers are looking on; to the right a moustachioed Talleyrand dressed as a cardinal is in attendance with other ministers in ancient dress or armour. His surgical shoe is wrongly shown on his left foot. Armed mounted guards and a large fortress in the background complete the scene.‎

Soult, d’Argout, Guizot, Montalivet et Persil tendent la première corde. (celle de l’illégalité, de l’état de siège, des conseils de guerre). Barthe, Humann, Dupin et Gisquet tirent le câble des attaques contre la presse, des amendes… Thiers s’accroche à la redingote du roi. Le bâton des « Procès à la PRESSE » a été jeté dans une des roues du char pour freiner son avancée. Talleyrand jette des pierres sur le chemin de la Liberté afin de ralentir le char. Elles sont emballées dans des feuilles portant des inscriptions mentionnant les diverses mesures prises pour contrecarrer l’avancée de la république. A quatre pattes par terre, sa main dte repose sur une pierre portant le projet d’une « 3e Restaura […] [Restauration] » pour la France. L’explication précise que « la Liberté se rit de ces vains efforts, qui en font que retarder un peu sa marche prudente, et passe par-dessus ces pierres d’achoppement, qui produisent à peine de légers cahots. ». Le corbeau, oiseau de mauvais augure, plane au-dessus de la scène. Il est annonciateur d’un destin funeste à cette entreprise qui vise à détruire la république et la liberté. La phrase de titre est significative de l’impossibilité de freiner la marche de la liberté qui « poursuit sa carrière, d’un pas lent, mais sûr » (in explication).‎

The king is represented as puppet-master controlling his theatre below; he is pulling into action the recently appointed Marshal Gerard, who is standing in front of a table surrounded by seven other ministerial puppets; the rivals Thiers2 and Guizot3 are recognizable in the centre, whilst Talleyrand occupies a prominent position to the right supported on a crutch under his left shoulder. Some light traces of foxing.1 Etienne Maurice, Comte Gerard (1773–1852) had an exceptionally distin- guished military career throughout the Napoleonic period reaching the rank of divisional general. Louis-Philippe appointed him Minister of War and a Marshal of France. In this capacity he commanded the French army during the Belgian Revolution and briefly served as prime minister in 1834;2 LouisAdolpheThiers(1797–1877),politicianandhistorian,wasamemberof the liberal opposition during the reign of Charles X. He persuaded Louis- Philippe to act in 1830, and served as foreign minister to the July Monarchy in 1836 and in 1840. Thiers became Head of State after the Franco-Prussian War;3 Francois Pierre Guillaume Guizot (1787–1874), statesman and historian, was a liberal opponent to the reactionary Restoration government of Charles X. Traviès. » [Charles-Joseph Traviès, dessinateur]Description iconographique:Un homme, Mayeux, en redingote, de profil, tient une poire de sa main gche et s’apprête à couper cette dernière de sa main dte tenant un couteau. Au second plan, une chaise ainsi qu’une table portant une bouteille de vin, un verre et une assiette avec une autre poire. Il s’agit d’une allusion parodique aux propos tenus par Louis-Philippe en août 1830 : « La Charte sera désormais une vérité ». Mayeux s’insurge contre les atteintes à la liberté de la presse, et se venge sur une poire.
