Presentation copy of an Early Draft script for the Hungarian film released in Hungry in 1932 as "Tavaszi zapor" in Frace in 1933 as "Marie Legende Hongroise" and in the United States in 1935 as "Spring Shower." Housed in a likely hand-sewn floral cloth-covered portfolio the script is INSCRIBED by the Hungarian-American feminist and radical socialist screenwriter Ilona Fulop on the title page: "To Mac: / Because You still trust me! / Ilona / Christmas 1929 / Hollywood Cal." A unique and attractive item and probably the only surviving copy of the script. <br/><br/>The story of a poor girl driven out of her village when she becomes pregnant by her employer's wealthy fiance finding refuge working as a maid in a brothel. After her daughter is taken from her however she falls into alcoholism and dies. A maid in Heaven as she was on earth she saves her daughter from befalling a similar fate by "emptying her mop bucket" on her daughter's head via a rain shower at a pivotal moment. <br/><br/>A multinational production in which a Hungarian screenwriter and Hungarian director both with experience in Hollywood shot a film starring a French actress using frozen assets from a French producer that had been mandated for exclusively Hungarian use. Though not a box office success at the time it is now regarded as one of the all-time great films originating from the country. In a 1919 article entitled "What is 'Revolution' Doing to Love" screenwriter Fulop describes herself as a socialist radical as opposed to a revolutionary or a Bolshevik and her desire to further equal rights for women strongly defines her as a modern-day feminist as well. "Spring Showers" with its women- and proletarian-friendly plot thus comes as little surprise. <br/><br/>Housed in floral cloth-covered portfolio titled wrappers. Brief notation in holograph ink on the front wrapper and in pencil on the verso of the last page. <br/><br/>Based on the novel "Thieves' Market" by A.I. Bezzerides who also wrote the screenplay. <br/><br/>Based on Bezzerides' own experiences as a truck driver the author's adaptation of his own novel takes a direct aim at the fruit industry of the West coast resulting in essential proletarian literature. The novel's rich California scenery comes through beautifully in Dassin's visually stunning film reminiscent of the director's earlier noirs "Brute Force" in 1947 and "The Naked City" in 1948 Silver et al. <br/><br/>Blue studio wrappers dated August 19 1949 noting footage of 8437 feet. Los Angeles: Columbia Broadcasting System CBS 1979. Two Draft scripts for the 1981 film. One is a First Draft script dated December 1979 the other is an Agency script in promotional titled wrappers undated. <br/><br/>Directed by Bob Rafelson and based on the 1939 novel by James M. Cain "Postman" was one of the gems of early 1980 cinema along with "The Verdict" and neo-noir and brought David Mamet to the attention of the filmmaking world leading to his working not only as a screenwriter but an important director. Mamet's grim update of Cain's classic hard-boiled novel was somewhat panned on release but is today held in high regard and is considered a major influence on the genre. <br/><br/>Shot on location in Santa Barbara California. <br/><br/>Script one:<br/>Red titled wrappers. Brief annotations in holograph pencil on the versos of two pages. <br/><br/>District Attorney Stephen Pettijohn Craven returns to his alma mater to lecture on circumstantial evidence and references a recent murder case. A local banker weds a young woman against the will of another man and the banker is later found dead. A remake of the 1929 John G. Vintage reference photograph with snipe printed on the verso identifying director Harry Beaumont on the set with actresses Anita Page and Joan Marsh in the 1932 film based on the 1932 J.P. McEvoy novel of the same name. With an additional stamp on the verso reading "Country of origin USA." <br/><br/>Left jobless and about to be kicked out of his apartment by the Great Depression a former radio writer accidentally kills his wife. Going on the run with his mistress he comes on a radio show hosted by his former boss to protest his innocence and lead a manhunt for the "killer."<br/><br/>10 x 8 inches.
