Enoncer / Denoncer l'autre.

Language : French.

C. Cardelle de Hartmann (ed.)
Corpus Christianorum. Victor Tunnunensis, Iohannes Biclarensis, Chronicon cum reliquiis ex Consularibus Caesaraugustanis - Chronicon
Hardback, CLX+160 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503017334. Victor, bishop of Tunnuna in North Africa, continued Prosper's Chronicle from 444 until 566/7, centring his narrative in the ecclesiastical politics of his time. His chronicle was in turn continued in Spain for the period 566-589 by John, abbot of Biclarum and later bishop of Gerunda (Girona). John's work is one of the very few historical sources written in the time of the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo, and it provides us with some otherwise unknown information about Visigothic and Byzantine history in his time. Later, probably in the 7th century, somebody added marginal notes to a manuscript of the combined chronicles of Victor and John. These marginalia contain information, much of it not known from other sources, relating to Spanish history in the period covered by Victor's chronicle. Mommsen named these marginalia the Chronicorum Caesaraugustanorum reliquiae and presented them in his edition for the Monumenta Germaniae Historica as an independent text. In the present edition, however, they can again be read in their original and proper context. This new edition differs from that of Mommsen's (in the second volume of the Chronica Minora) in more than just this respect, for it is based for the first time on the direct collation not only of the medieval manuscript of the combined chronicles in the library of the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, but also of all of the sixteenth century codices Pereziani. This latter has been made possible not least thanks to the recent discovery of photographs of the otherwise lost codex Perezianus from Segorbe. The language of the oldest codex, the Complutensis, which clearly conserves many distinctive late Latin linguistic features, has only been corrected when it is obviously faulty, thus undoing many unnecessary previous editorial interventions in the text. Running beneath the text in this edition, quotations are given from 'Vasaeus Chronicle' 15. Languages: Latin.

Narratives of a New Order Cistercian Historical Writing in England, 1150-1220
Hardback, XII+258 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503514048. Knowledge of the Bible was the foundation of Carolingian intellectual life. Charlemagne's great capitulary, the Admonitio generalis, and his De litteris colendis leave no doubt that correct understanding of scripture, by both laity and the clergy responsible for communicating its message, was central to the king's efforts to lead his people to salvation. Biblical exegesis was the ovewhelmingly dominant form of literary production during the Carolingian epoch, not only in terms of the many original works but also in terms of the numerous copies made of older exegetical treatises. The substantial number of extant manuscripts of Carolingian exegetical writings strikingly demonstrates the transmission of this intellectual achievement to subsequent generations, whereby it exerted a well-documented influence on the twelfth-cenutry's new synthesis of biblical theology. This volume draws on recent scholarship which challenges the fifty-year old assessment by Beryl Smalley that Carolingian commentaries lacked originality and were worthy simply for transmitted their sources to the more original scholars of the eleventh century. The articles contained here show that the Carolingian period was a major turning-point in the history of the medieval approach to the Bible. Commentaries were composed for books of scripture ignored during the patristic era (such as the epistle to the Hebrews); new exegetical methods, such as the gloss, were invented; ninth-century exegetes selected and handled borrowings from earlier sources in an individualistic manner; and exegetical techniques impacted on poetry, homilies, artistic imagery and other manifestations of Carolingian intellectual life. Corpus Christianorum. Raimundus Lullus Opera latina XXXIV (61-63) annis 1294-1295 composita
Hardback, XVIII+366 p., 2 colour ill., 1 b/w line art, 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503541402. Languages: Latin, German.

Saintly Brides and Bridegrooms. The Mystic Marriage in Northern Renaissance Art.
Hardback , X 198 p., 100 b/w ill. 17 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm, Languages: English,. ISBN 9781905375875. Building upon recent scholarly interest in mystics and mysticism in late medieval Europe, this book explores the visual representation of female and male saints depicted as brides or bridegrooms of Christ in northern European art from 1300 to 1550. The mystic marriage imagery of St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Agnes of Rome, St. John the Evangelist, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, and the Blessed Henry Suso is studied through an analysis of a wide range of paintings, illuminated manuscripts, prints, and sculpture. From these case studies, Muir argues that different visual conventions were used in the art of this period to portray the male and female experiences of mystic marriage and suggests possible reasons for these differences. She further considers why comparatively few mystics were visually portrayed in a mystic marriage with Christ, despite the large number recorded as having had that experience. Providing insights into the meanings of the mystical experience when portrayed in visual terms, this book will appeal to art historians as well as to other medievalists with an interest in the intersections of art, religion, and gender, Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History (HMSAH 70)

ceremoniaux catholiques en France a l?epoque moderne. Une litterature de codification des rites liturgiques
Paperback, 560 p., 40 b/w ill., 210 x 280 mm. ISBN 9782503529509.
Hardback, CLXXIX+336 p., 2 b/w ill., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503050195. This work presents the first edition and study of the grammatical compendium commonly attributed to Folchino dei Borfoni. Based on two main manuscripts, it is the first complete modern critical edition of a fourteenth-century Italo-Latin grammar. Originally intended for teaching Latin to native Italian speakers in Cremona during the last quarter of the fourteenth century, the compendium represents a prime example of medieval linguistic theory on the threshold of Italian Humanism. The text will interest not only students of the history of education, grammar, linguistics, and the Latin language, but also those interested in Romance languages and historical linguistics due to the many vernacular-Latin translations used to edify Folchino's rules. DeSantis opens the volume with an extensive introduction in which she presents her findings on Folchino's life, previous scholarship, Folchino's other known works, and manuscript descriptions; she draws on codicological and textual evidence to prove the authenticity of Folchino as the author. The following chapters include a discussion of Folchino's sources, an analysis of the methodology, terminology, content and structure of the text, and a study of the language, both Latin and vernacular, used in the text. An appendix provides a detailed linguistic description of the northern Italian dialect found throughout the grammar.Languages: Latin, English.

Liturgy of the Canons regular of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. A Study and a Catalogue of the Manuscript Sources
Hardback, 344 p., 17 b/w ill., 160 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503514222. The liturgy of the Holy Sepulchre is the use created by the Latin Catholics who settled in Jerusalem as a result of the first crusade, in 1099. It originated within the cathedral church of the Holy Sepulchre, the patriarchal see, and it was consequently adopted by most of the religious institutions within the patriarchate. Although completely western, it does not follow the liturgical use practised in any single western diocese. Dr Dondi traces its individual components from diverse western sources, showing how the liturgy of the Holy Sepulchre has a composite nature. There are no narrative or legislative records that shed light on when or by whom or how this new liturgical use was created: only through examination of the surviving liturgical manuscripts has it been possible to answer these questions. This study analyses the characteristics of the liturgy of the Holy Sepulchre and, most importantly, identifies its western sources through a method of comparative liturgy drawing on the widest range of western liturgical uses. It shows the process through which liturgical elements from Bayeux, Evreux, Paris, and Chartres were incorporated as constituent parts of the liturgy of the Holy Sepulchre, providing new evidence for our understanding of the ecclesiastical organisation of Latin Jerusalem and Antioch. When liturgical borrowings are seen in their historical context, it becomes possible to identify some of the people most responsible for the liturgy's development. The work includes a descriptive catalogue of the 18 liturgical manuscripts of the holy Sepulchre, produced and used in Jerusalem, Acre, Caesarea, Tyre, Antioch, and Cyprus. Languages: English.

Corpus Christianorum. Radulfus Ardens Speculum universale I-V Libri I-V
Hardback, CXXXIV+484 p., 8 b/w line art, 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503536644.

Corpus Christianorum. Alexander Neckam Sacerdos ad altare
hardback, LXX+294 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503533490. Alexander Neckam's Sacerdos ad altare, which survives uniquely in Cambridge, Gonville and Caius College, ms. 385/605, was among the last works composed by the abbot of St Mary's Abbey, Cirencester. Written in the early thirteenth century, it consists of texts on subjects ranging from sacerdotal vestments to scribal instruments, and includes chapters that recommend readings in the Bible, the liberal arts and medicine, as well as in civil and canon law. The texts are followed by glosses on selected lemmata that comment on points of grammar and lexicography, illustrated by classical and biblical quotations and enlivened with occasional observations on monastic life and practices. The work attests to the educational commitment of the Austin canons, an Order that was widely recognized for their contributions to scholarship on grammar, theological exegesis and law. Rhetoric and Renewal in the Latin West 1100-1540. Essays in Honour of John O. Ward
Hardback, X+270 p., 1 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503513409. The essays in this volume, presented in honour of John O. Ward, explore the role of rhetoric in promoting reform and renewal in the Latin West from Peter Abelard (1079-1142) to Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540). Ward, who has taught for many years at the University of Sydney, has been an influential and creative force in medieval and Renaissance studies both in Australia and internationally. This volume opens with a personal memoir and bibliography of Ward's publications, as well as an overview of the study of medieval rhetoric. The first of the three sections, 'Abelard and Rhetoric', relates Abelard's rhetoric to his logic, his theology, and his relationship to Heloise. A second section, 'Voices of Reform', considers various writers (William of Malmesbury, John of Salisbury, Richard FitzNigel, and William of Ockham) who bring rhetorical techniques to bear upon analysis of social conditions. A third section, 'Rhetoric in Transition', deals with the evolution of rhetorical theory between the late fourteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The volume will be of interest not just to specialists in rhetoric, but to all concerned with issues of reform and renewal in European culture during the period 1100-1540. Languages : English.
