‎The rare first complete Swedish translation of the Quran – also being the first translation in any Scandinavian language. “Between 1843 and 1967, four translations of the Quran were published in Scandinavia: three in Sweden, and one in Denmark. Prior to and during this period, theologians and philologists at Scandinavian universities had studied the Quran as part of their training in the Arabic language, and had translated parts of the text, first into Latin and then into the respective national languages. The first three Scandinavian translations of the Quran were into Swedish. The first of these translations, published in 1843, was done by Johan Fredrik Sebastian Crusenstolpe (1801– 1882). This was followed by the translation made by theologian and professor of Arabic literature, Carl Johannes Tornberg (1807– 1877) in 1874, and the one by Karl Vilhelm Zetterst (1866– 1953), a prominent Swedish professor of Semitic languages, which was published in 1917. Zetterst's translation has been republished several times and is still in use. In Danish, it was not until 1967 that a full translation of the Quran was published, by teacher Abdus Salam (Svend Åge) Madsen (1928– 2007), and in Norway it took another decade and a half before the first translation was published, by university lecturer Einar Berg (1921– 1995) in 1980.” (Eggen, On the Periphery, Translations of the Quran in Sweden, Denmark and Norway) Fredrik Crusenstolpe, a Swedish officer and diplomat, was known for his adventurous spirit and eccentricity. Crusenstolpe served in Tripoli, Tangier, Algiers and Lisbon. His translation emerged during a period of growing interest in the Middle East and North Africa among Scandinavia's cultural elite in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. While stationed in North Africa, Crusenstolpe developed a deep interest in the local people and their religion. However, securing financial support for the publication of his translation was challenging despite interest from a prominent publishing house. He ended up financing the project privately especially motivated by a personal desire to correct misconceptions about Prophet Muhammad in Swedish popular culture. To Crusenstolpe these misconceptions reflected not just ignorance about the Prophet but also a broader superstitious mentality he did not like. He portrayed the Muhammed as a rational ""Arabic founder of law"" aligning with Enlightenment-era European depictions of Muhammad. OCLC lists only four copies (Library of Congress, NY Public Library, Ohio State University & Cleveland Public Library).‎

‎True first edition of this seminal classic on the life of Jesus, which caused an immediate scandal when it appeared - Renan's masterpiece, which constitudes the first attempt to write a biography of Jesus the man and strongly puts forth the notion that the Bible too can be subject to historical investigation and critical scrutiny. The work enraged the Roman Catholic Church but was an immediate success in most of Europe. ""In six months sixty thousand copies of the French edition had been sold and edition succeeded edition. Renan regarded the book as the first of a series on the ""Origins of Christianity"", which he continued with ""The Apostles"" (1866), ""Saint Paul"" (1869), ""The Anti-Christ"" (1873), ""The Gospels"" (1877), ""The Christian Church"" (1879) and ""Marcus Aurelius"" (1881) but none of these emulated the success of the ""Life of Jesus""... Immediate success was partly a ""succès de scandale"" but this would not have kept the book alive. It is Renan's approach to the subject and his beautiful prose that gave it lasting eminence."" It is very elegantly written and is renowned for its description of the historical setting, charming descriptions of sceneries, its penetrating psychological analysis and its overall style and class. (Laffont-Bompiani IV:681). Ernest Renan (1823-1892) was a French philologist, philosopher and historian. His father died when he was aged five, and his mother wanted him to become a priest. Until he was about 16 years old, he was trained by the Church, but due to his investigative and truth-seeking nature as well as his studies (e.g. Hebrew), he was in doubt as to the historical truth of the Scriptures, and with the help of his sister he chose his own path in life. ""He studied intensively the languages of the Bible and filled a number of minor academic positions, frequently encountering difficulties because of the heterodoxy and outspokenness of his religious opinions."" (Printing and the Mind of Man 352). In 1840 he began studying philosophy and later philology, in 1847 he took his degree as Agrégé de Philosophie and became master at the Lycée of Vendome. After having returned from a mission to Italy in the year 1850 where he gathered material for his historical-philosophical masterpiece, ""Averroës et l'Averroisme"", he was offered employment at the ""Bibliothèque Nationale"" (at the manuscript department). In 1861 he was chosen to become professor of Hebrew at the Collège de France, but because the emperor refused to ratify the appointment (inspired by the Clerical party), he was not established in the chair untill 1870. In 1878 he was elected for the Academy. Renan is considered a scolar of the greatest excellence and an impressive writer.‎

‎Rare first edition of the second collected folio of Reynolds works, according to Lowndes: “The best folio edition”. Reynolds was highly regarded as a preacher. “Many prized his written sermons and religious treatises. Collections of his works were first published in 1658 and 1679, followed by a complete six-volume edition in 1826.” (Beeke & Pedersen, Meet the Puritans) Edward Reynolds, bishop of Norwich, was born in Southampton in 1599. He was educated at Merton College, Oxford, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1618. He became a fellow in 1620, due to his ability in Greek, debate, and oratory. Later, he received a Master of Arts degree (1624) and a Doctor of Divinity degree (1648) from Cambridge. “Reynolds was chosen dean of Christ Church College (1648-51, 1659) and vice-chancellor of the university (1648-50). From 1657 to 1661, he served as vicar of St. Lawrence Jewry, so he was again heard in London. After Cromwell’s death in 1658, Reynolds became a leader of the Presbyterian clergy. He preached to Richard Cromwell’s Parliament several times in 1659 and 1660, counseling that radical political and doctrinal opinions be suppressed but that differences on secondary issues be tolerated. ‎The exceedingly rare second edition (the first being from 1586) of Rogers’ somewhat free translation of ‘Papist’ Diego de Estalla’s work “Libro de la vanidad del mundo (Toledo, 1562). Rogers admits that he had no access to the original but had to use the Italian and Spanish translations. The present English translation, however, is of significant interest, as recent research suggests it was a source and inspiration for Shakespeare’s ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’: At the opening of ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’, the vow to renounce worldly pleasure has barely been announced before one of Navarre’s book-men declares his success: “Dumaine is mortified” (I.i.28). This ‘mortified’ is not a word Shakespeare would use often. It appears here in the sense of ‘having the appetites and passions in subjection’ and insensible or impervious to (the world and its pleasures), the latter informing Dumaine’s gloss: ‘To love, to wealth, to pomp. I pine and die’. The fact that this is the earliest use of ‘mortified’ in the Shakespearean canon is the first clue that one of the sources for Love’s Labour’s Lost was Thomas Roger’s A Methode unto Mortification, published in London in 1586 and again in 1608. Shakespeare’s pleasure in frustrating the ambitions of this book went some way to shaping his play”. (Kingsley-Smith, A Method unto Mortification: A New Source for Love’s Labour’s Lost). ""Love's Labour's Lost"" is one of William Shakespeare's early comedies, believed to have been written in the mid-1590s. The play revolves around the King of Navarre and three of his noble companions who make a pact to swear off women and focus on scholarly pursuits for three years. However, their resolve is tested when the Princess of France and her entourage arrive on a diplomatic mission. Each of the men falls in love with one of the women, leading to a series of comedic misunderstandings, romantic entanglements, and wordplay. “It is also possible that some facts about the original author sparked Shakespeare’s interest. Diego de Estella was born in Navarre, and spent time the court of Philip II of Spain before incurring disapproval for his criticism of court life and being forced into a Franciscan monastery. ‎First edition of Schelling's ""The Deities of Samothrace"", which constitutes his earliest printed contribution to the mythic tradition. Schelling accepts Hegel's conception of the absolute as that which is finite to the extent that it becomes nothing but negative relation to itself, and as such, for Schelling, this becomes a way of constructing a negative system of philosophy. This system explains the logic of change within a world that is subject to explanation, but it cannot explain why there is a world that is changing in the first place. Thus, Schelling sets out to explain the historical and ontological actuality of the world, and it is this attempt that leads him to his philosophical mythology and theology. For Schelling, the treatment of mythology and religion becomes the positive complement to the negative speculative philosophy. The work was supposed to be a part of the great work that Schelling planned for years ""Die Weltalter"" (""The Ages of the World"")"" of this, however, he only ever wrote a small portion and published even less. According to Schelling, this work is meant as both an introduction and an transition to the rest of this planned cyclus of works. ‎An attractive sammelband containing various works all relating to Lutheran theology. Of special interest is Oswald Schlee’s commentary on Simeon’s Nunc dimittis or Song of Simeon from the Gospel of Luke, verses 29 through 32, printed in Rostock in 1613. It is of the utmost scarcity and we have not been able to trace a single work at auction and OCLC list no copies. Only mentioning of the work we have been able to trace is in Willer's ‘Catalogus Novus nundinarum Autumnalium', the Frankfurt Book Fair catalogue from 1613 (itself a great rarity). Oswald Schlee died on January 4th, 1613 so the present work was most likely his last and published posthumously. Schlee's ouevre is centered on “Trostschriften” (consolatory writings) and “Leichpredigten” (funeral sermons) dealing with themes of death, mourning, and Christian consolation. This present work, a biblical canticle expressing a devout man’s readiness for death after seeing the Messiah, is a fine concluding and representative work of Schlee's authorship. Oswald Schlee (1553 - 1613) was a German Lutheran clergyman and theologian. He began his studies at the University of Rostock in 1568 and around 1572 at the University of Jena under Justus Lipsius. In 1579, he earned his Master of Philosophy degree in Rostock. From 1577 to 1589, he was a deacon at the St. Peter's Church in Rostock. From 1589, he served at the St. Mary’s Church in Rostock, becoming Archdeacon until 1609, and from 1609 to 1613 he was the pastor and starting in 1610, also the city superintendent.‎

With this manual clergy would no longer need to rely on Roman Catholic casuists. Jeremy Taylor (1613–1667) was a prominent cleric in the Church of England who gained renown as an author during Oliver Cromwell's Protectorate. Often referred to as the ""Shakespeare of Divines"" for his poetic eloquence, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest prose writers in the English language.‎

‎Presentation copy of the uncommon first edition edition of Bishop Tetens’ eulogy in honor of Ansgar written for the Millennium Celebration of Christianity’s introduction in 1826. Stephan Tetens (1773 - 1855) was a Danish bishop. In 1804, he became parish priest at Trinitatis Church in Fredericia, and in 1811 at Saint Canute's Church in Odense, as well as cathedral provost for the Diocese of Funen, in which role he, famously confirmed H.C. Andersen.‎

‎The rare editio princeps of 'Christendoms Saga' or 'Kristni saga', constituting one of the very first sagas printed on Iceland. The printing of 'Christendoms Saga' in 1688 was a significant event in the history of Icelandic literature and culture. The saga is a historical narrative of the introduction of Christianity to Iceland in the 10th century and had been orally transmitted for centuries. The printing of the saga in 1688 allowed for wider dissemination of the story and cemented the saga's place in Icelandic literary tradition. Iceland's first - and, until 1773, only active - printing press was established around 1530 in Holar, the island's northern episcopal, where it operated until the late seventeenth century. The press came into the private possession of Bishop Gudbrandur Thorlaksson (ca. 1542-1627) and his descendants, several of whom became bishops as well.The printing in Holar was solely centered on religious texts and are of the utmost scarcity and are never found in the trade. In 1648, Brynjolfur Sveinsson (1605-1675), bishop of Iceland's southern diocese Skalholt asked the Danish authorities for permission to establish another printing press to print historical texts and sagas alongside religious books. Not wanting the competition, his northern colleague in Holar intervened to halt this initiative, and nothing came of the plan for a second press nor of the printing of historical subject-matter for the time being. After Thordur Torlaksson (1637-1697), great-grandson of Bishop Gudbrandur Thorlaksson, became bishop in 1674, a monopoly from the King was granted, on April 7th, 1688, to print historical books on Iceland. Shortly after, namely the same year that the grant was given, the present work as well as ""Landnamabok"" and ""Islendingabok"" was printed - all three works being of the utmost scarcity. The printing press remained the sole press in Iceland until 1773. The ""Christendoms Saga"" is a significant piece of literature that provides valuable insights into the social, cultural, and religious transformation of Iceland during that period. The saga begins with the arrival of two Christian missionaries, Thorvald Konradsson and Thangbrandur, who are sent to Iceland by the Norwegian king Olaf Tryggvason. The missionaries face stiff resistance from the pagan chieftains who see Christianity as a threat to their traditional way of life ""Whereas many accounts of Iceland's conversion to Christianity occur within the context of longer works, lives of Olaf Tryggvason or Sagas of Icelanders, Kristni saga (i.e. ""Christendoms Saga"") sets out to tell the history of Icelandic Christianity independently, as its opening sentence explicitly states: Nú hefr þat, hversu kristni kom á Ísland 'Now this is the beginning of how Christianity came to Iceland"". The present work is based on Jón Erlendsson's copy (AM 105) of Hauksbók (AM 371), a manuscript from the first decade of the 14th century, which is the only version of it preserved, whose main theme is kristnitaka, that is, the beginnings of Christianity in Iceland and the activity of Ísleifur Gissurarson and Gissur Ísleifsson, who were bishops of Skálholt, between 1056-1080 and 1082-1111.Pre-Eighteenth-Century Icelandic prints are in general very rare and are almost never found in the trade. The Skalhollt-prints are of special interest since they were the first in Iceland to print secular and historical works including the sagas thereby making a seminal contribution to preserving the Icelandic cultural heritage. Title-label removed from spine, gilding to edges of boards occasionally worn off. Wear to extremities. Inner hinges open into the cords, binding still tight, but boards don't close properly. 18th century inventory number to verso of fist leaf. Owner's inscription, dated ""Ups. 1749"" (i.e. Uppsala) to title-page. Old owner's name cut off from top of title-page, far from affecting lettering. Occasional minor browning or soiling, but all in all very nice and clean. Several woodcut ornamental vignettes and initials. 1 (blank, except for signature-mark ""A""), 3 ff + pp. 1-196, 2 ff. ‎The very rare first edition (in the even scarcer variant-version with L. Greene's name as publisher in imprint) of Willet's highly praised commentary on on the prophesies of Daniel, which contains much valuable information and constitutes an important study of these, handling the most difficult questions and knotty controversies and introducing new writers and commentators. According to Lowndes, ""This is considered the most valuable of all of Willet's productions.""The work is highly praised in all bibliographies and studies on the subject. It seems to be the best work on the the prophesies of Daniel and indispensible for the study of these.""A work of much information, as it contains the opinions of many authors on each point of difficulty. The author has written comments on Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Samuel, Romans, Jude, and some detached parts of books"" but in none does he discover more skill or judgment than in the present work.""
