Holy War and Rapprochement, Studies in the Relations between the Mamluk Sultanate and the Mongol Ilkhanate (1260-1335)
softcover, 149 p., 156 x 234 mm, ISBN: 978-2-503-53152-6 languages: English. ISBN 9782503531526. This book argues that the relations between the Mamluk Sultanate of Syria and Egypt and the Ilkhanate, the Mongol state in Iran and the surrounding countries, were of a military, political-diplomatic, social and cultural nature. The relations between the Mamluk Sultanate of Syria and Egypt and the Ilkhanate, the Mongol state in Iran and the surrounding countries, were of a military, political-diplomatic, social and cultural nature. They had a profound impact not only on these states themselves, their ruling elites and the general population, but also on neighboring countries and beyond. The history of the eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia, Arabia and the Caucasus can hardly be understood without taking into consideration these complicated relations, whose impact was also felt in the other Mongol states to the east, and in the more westerly and northern parts of Europe. One can perhaps even speak of a thirteenth century ?world war?: on one side were arrayed the Mamluks and the Mongol Golden Horde of southern Russia, at times Genoa and the Byzantine empire, and even for a short while the kingdom of Sicily under the Hohenstaufen, while on the other side we find the Ilkhanate, the Venetians (albeit still trading with the Mamluks), the states of western Europe, the Papacy, the Armenians of both the Caucasus and Cilicia, and Georgia. To this we could add minor, but still important players, such as the Bedouin of Syria, the Seljuqs of Rum (Anatolia), the Turcoman of that country, and other local elements. Far away, the Mongols of Central Asia and the Great Khan in China also had an impact on affairs along the Mediterranean coast and southwest Asia. But this was not only a matter of war, which between the Mamluks and Ilkhanid Mongols continued from 1260-1320. There were intricate diplomatic relations; polemics and ideological sparring; defections, immigrations and transfers of populations; cultural influences; and, the impact on social life, economics and demography. The present volume is based on four lectures given at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris in February 2007, and first provides an overview of the military struggle between these two regional powers, continues with a detailed discussion of the ideological posturing and sparring between them ? both before and after the conversion of the Mongols to Islam in the 1290s, and finally reviews and compares how the Mamluks and Mongols presented themselves to the local, mainly Muslim, populations that they ruled. The book provides an analysis of an important chapter in Middle Eastern, Asian and world history. Languages : English.

Corpus Christianorum. Iacobus de Vitriaco Vita Marie de Oegnies
Hardback, 241 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503542119.

Hardback, 225 p., 1 b/w ill. + 4 colour ill., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503050294. The fall of Acre in May 1291 marked the end of Crusader domination in the Holy Land. The two main Latin sources, both written within months of the catastrophe, are the anonymous Excidium Aconis and the Ystoria de desolatione et conculcatione civitatis Acconensis et tocius terre sancte written by a certain magister Thadeus of Naples. The first text was edited by dom Martene in 1724, the second by Paul Riant in 1873. For several reasons both editions were hard to use, unreliable, and in urgent need of being made more easily available. In the present edition the texts have been reedited on a significantly enlarged manuscript basis and with full critical apparatuses, notes and indices. Languages: Latin, English.

R. Beyers (ed.)
Corpus Christianorum. Libri de Nativitate Mariae. De Nativitate Mariae
Hardback, 456 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503411019. Languages: French.

The Devils and Evil Spirits of Babylonia Volume 2 Vols. Set [Hardcover] Volume 2 Vols. Set
ABOUT THE BOOK:- From the earliest times Eastern races, in common with the rest of mankind, have always held a firm belief in the existence of evil spirits, ghosts, and all kindred powers. The phenomena of death, the mysteries of disease and sickness, and all the other events of common occurrence in daily life gave rise to speculations about the unseen world, which gradually led to a distinction, although slight at all times, between good evil spirits. The early Semitic people of Babylonia, who ever they may have been or wherever they may have migrated from, found a theology ready to their hands in their adopted country, which they took over from its primitive inhabitants the Sumerians doubtless grafting to it many of the beliefs of their forefathers. The primitive Sumerian recognised three distinct classes of evil spirit, namely, first came the disembodied human soul which could find no rest and so wandered up and down the face of the earth, secondly, the gruesome spirits which were half human and half demon, and thirdly, the friends and devils who were of the same nature as the gods. Who rode on the noxious winds, or brought storms and pestilence. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- R. Campbell Thompson, (1876-1941) was a British archaeologist, assyriologist, and cuneiformist. He excavated at Nineveh, Ur, Nebo, and Charchemish among many other sites. He was born in Kensington, and educated at colet Court, St. Paul school and Caius College, Cambridge, where he read oriental (Hebrew and Aramic) Languages. In 1918 Mesopotamia fell into British hands, and the trustees of the British Museum applied to have an archaeologist attached to the army in the field to protect antiquities from injury. As a captain in the Intelligence Service serving in the region and a former assistant in the British Museum R.C. Thompson was commissioned to start the work. After a short investigation of Ur, he dug at Shahrain and the mounds at Tell- al- Laham. After the First World War he held a fellowship at Merton College, Oxford. He died in 1941 aged 64 while serving in the Home Guard River Patrol on the River Thames. The Title 'The Devils and Evil Spirits of Babylonia written/authored/edited by R. The Devils and Evil Spirits of Babylonia: Evil Spirit Volume Vol. 1st Volume Vol. 1st
