The present manuscript, painstakingly executed in the style of the late-mediaeval French Books of Hours, was a gift from Léonie Tiersonnier (née Ruffin) to her daughter Jeanne Clémence Guillemine Thiersonnier (1849-1936) on the occasion of her marriage to (Marie Auguste) Ambroise Jacobe de Haut de Sigy (1842-86) in the Paris church of St. Pierre de Chaillot on 6 August 1873. They were married by Théodore-Augustin Forcade (1816-85), the newly-installed Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence. A 26-page Saints' calendar (captioned "Souvenirs") is followed by an elaborately designed 56-page missal, decorated throughout by initials (some raised in gilt), line infillings, and ornamental borders.

In the preface to this first edition Kant explains what he means by a critique of pure reason: "I do not mean by this a critique of books and systems, but of the faculty of reason in general, in respect of all knowledge after which it may strive independently of all experience." Before Kant, it was generally held that truths of reason must be analytic, meaning that what is stated in the predicate must already be present in the subject (for example, "An intelligent man is intelligent" or "An intelligent man is a man"). In either case, the judgment is analytic because it is ascertained by analyzing the subject. It was thought that all truths of reason, or necessary truths, are of this kind: that in all of them there is a predicate that is only part of the subject of which it is asserted. If this were so, attempting to deny anything that could be known a priori (for example, "An intelligent man is not intelligent" or "An intelligent man is not a man") would involve a contradiction. It was therefore thought that the law of contradiction is sufficient to establish all a priori knowledge. "The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of 'pure reason'; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame. Als Philosoph "folgte er zunächst Schelling, ab 1834 dann Jacobi. Als Philosophieprofessor und Universitätsrektor in Salzburg machte sich Vogl um die Modernisierung der zuvor noch ganz aristotelisch-scholastischen Lehrpläne verdient und führte die neuere Philosophie, die Experimentalphysik und die Mathematik als Grundlagen ein. Als Abt "beförderte er [die ernsten Studien] an den Schulen seines in der Geschichte der Wissenschaften so hervorragenden Stiftes, vermehrte und erweiterte die Lehrfächer, führte öffentliche Prüfungen ein und widmete insbesondere der Akademie seine Fürsorge; die Sternwarte verdankt ihm ihre kostspielige Ausstattung [...]; auch die astronomische Bibliothek bereicherte der Prälat mit den kostbarsten Werken [...], und die Klostergeschichte zählt den Prälaten [...] zu den besten Aebten von Kremsmünster" (Wurzbach LI, 167).

First edition of Murray' master disputation: the author's interleaved personal copy with his extensive autograph revisions for the second, significantly expanded edition which would be published by Bohn in Hamburg in 1718 (an octavo volume of 136 pages). The thesis discusses the Kenites, a nomadic clan in the ancient Levant, whose lands God promised to the descendants of Abraham: "On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: the Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites" (Gen 15:18-19). "Their origin is not known: some locate it in Arabia, others in the Philistine states or in Judah" (cf. Zedler XV, 452). The Kenites' possible origin from the Arabian Peninsula (Arabia Felix) is discussed on p. 24 in particular (with numerous corrections and amendments in the margin and additional notes on the "Sinus Arabicus" and the "mare rubrum" on the following interleaf). Rare in all editions: no copy in trade records internationally. - Murray (1695-1771), of Scottish descent, was born in Memel in East Prussia. After gaining his Master's degree with the present work, he travelled to Hamburg and then, with his expanded book-length thesis to recommend him, on to England. After his return to the continent in 1719 he lectured in Kiel before embarking on a career as a preacher in Holstein, Stockholm, and Uppsala (cf. Jöcher/A.). - Murray's extensive handwritten revisions, as indeed the printed text, are in Latin with occasional interspersions in Greek and Hebrew. Very appealingly bound, extremely rare Portuguese liturgical collection of prayers and devotions to Saint Anthony of Padua (1195-1231). They are known to have been issued variously between 1761 and 1850 (the editions of 1828, 1844 and 1869 all having 80 pages), but no other copy of an 1840 edition could be traced. - Slight browning; a few edges slightly wrinkled. The splendid binding, apparently crafted for the Portuguese royal family, shows tiny flaws to spine, otherwise immaculate.

An edition of two remarkable 15th century kabbalistic treatises, the "Kanah" and "Peliah", of which the latter is here printed for the first time. Contains observations on the account of the creation in Genesis and on the Decalogue. Seemingly launching kabbalistic theory against the Bible and the Talmud, the author (whose name is allegorical, but who likely flourished in Spain) in fact seeks to base on firmer ground the scripture he purports to criticize (cf. Graetz VIII, 449ff.). The chief role in this work is played by a prodigy called Nahum, who at the age of three, together with his father, was taught the Kabbala by his grandfather, the latter receiving the assistance and cooperation of the prophet Elijah and various heavenly voices. For the role of the versatile printer J. A. Kriger in producing books on his various presses for the growing number of Polish Jews eager for printed matter, cf. E. The Responsa of Rabbi Isaac ben Sheshet (Ribash), previously twice printed in the 16th century (in 1547 in Istanbul and in 1559 in Riva di Trento); Josef Karo claimed that his teacher Jacob Berab relied on these rulings more than on all similar authorities (cf. Jüd. Lex.). The Talmudic scholar Isaac ben Sheshet, who flourished in Spain and Algiers in the late 14th and early 15th century, was an expert on the philosophy of his time. Second edition of this extremely rare and curious emblem book, with the text couched in the form of seven dialogues between a "vir politicus" and "theologicus", generally attributed to the Hungarian Jesuit János Rajcsanyi. The dialogues concern (1) the existence of God; (2) divine providence; (3) fate; (4) predestination and divine prescience; (5) the immortality of the soul; (6) on Gehenna; and (7) the resurrection of the dead. Along with a frontispiece, each dialogue is preceded by an emblematic engraving by the Viennese artist (Franz) Ambros Dietel (d. 1737?) which constitute extraordinary, and frequently visionary, pictorial representations of the substance of each of the dialogues. The frontispiece is signed "A. Dietel sc. Vi.", others "Dietell" or "D. sc.". The plates depart from the usual format of the emblem book in that there is no motto, but the symbolic content of the images, each with an accompanying Biblical verse, places it squarely in the tradition. - Although Sommervogel cites no other edition and gives Raicsani's dates as 1670-1733, his text was first published in Vienna in 1676 with six very similar plates which clearly were the model on which Dietel based his engravings. An undated edition which may precede the present one was printed in Passau by Maria Margarete Höller, and reprints appear as late as 1757. All editions are rare: no copy of any edition in U.S. libraries, and only two copies anywhere (Bavaria State Library and Austrian National Library) of this 1704 edition. - Paper lightly browned; a few tiny wormholes to spine. 19th century bookplate of Anton Kurz on pastedown; handwritten and stamped 1979 ownership of the Viennese collector Werner Habel (1939-2015) to the flyleaf. Modelled on drawings by Johann Steislinger, the plates run the gamut of the Baroque era's wealth of emblematic designs and ideas, showing Biblical scenes accompanied by short explanatory texts as well as elaborately framed vignettes. As frequently, the depictions of the Fall of Man and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden on plate 3 are censored, Eve's pudenda hidden under red pencil. - Wants the first title-page. Binding rubbed, extremeties bumped and chipped. Heavy signs of use, pages fingerstained and brownstained with some tears throughout, partly rebacked with paper. Red marbled endpapers. Very appealing, complete copy of this famous polemical work by the Austrian writer Joseph Richter (1749-1813), denouncing immoral behaviour in monasteries. "A stinging attack on the Catholic clergy [...] Much sought-after and rare!" (cf. Hayn/G.). The text consists of twenty chapters, each treating a different aspect of monastic life. The author exposes the monks' cavalier attitude to their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, their breach of Lent and the carneval celebrations within the monasteries. Richter also laments the poor state of convent libraries in contrast to the wine cellars and demonstrates the drawbacks of monastic printing offices and pharmacies. - A pencil acquisition note, dated 1 October 1819, to flyleaf.
