12mo (90 x 149 mm). (8), 604 pp. (including engraved frontispiece of a pilgrim knocking at the gates of Heaven). Bound in early 20th-century crushed calf with gilt-and-brown title label on spine. Purple private ownership stamps of "N. Chr. Pedersen" of Svendborg on letterpress title and a few leaves of prelims. Insignificant tear to margin of frontispiece, well outside of engraved image; contents certainly dusty, but well-preserved. Excessively rare, early edition of the first translation of Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress" into Danish. Written while Bunyan was in prison for his extreme Puritanism, this extended allegory enjoyed popular translations in other Protestant countries during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. "It is [the] image of Bunyan as English that has come to dominate the way he is remembered today. In both the popular and academic domain, Bunyan stands as an icon of Englishness. Indeed, existing Bunyan scholarship is almost obsessive in its focus on him as a national figure of 17th-century England. His broader transnational presence is largely excised from the critical record" (Hofmeyr, The Portable Bunyan: A Transnational History of The Pilgrim's Progress, preface). - The two English parts were first published in 1678 and 1684 respectively, and the present translation by Jens Godsen first appeared in 1704-07. However, as a pocket-sized specimen of vernacular literature, it seems to have survived exceptionally poorly in all editions. We have been able to trace just two copies of any 18th century edition outside of Denmark, residing at Oxford and the British Library (1732); the latter however is in lamentable condition, lacking over 100 pages and with title-page "mutilated". The only record listed in RareBookHub is a Quaritch catalogue entry, where a copy of the 1758 edition was offered in 1971 for a princely $48. OCLC 911248490 (giving a collation). Not noted in Hofmeyr, The Portable Bunyan: A Transnational History of The Pilgrim's Progress (2004), who does however note the first Swedish translation of 1727.

Hoffmann) Venetian reprint of John Potter's edition of St. Clement (Oxford 1715), "a very splendid and elaborate edition, worthy [...] the erudition of the very learned prelate who hath so happily illustrated this miscellaneous writer" (Harwood, quoted in Dibdin I, 188). "The editor (as is well known) was afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury; and will long be remembered and reverenced for his acute and successful emendations of some of the most difficult of the Greek writers" (ibid.). - The frontispiece shows the Saint; the engraved title-page shows an appealing view of St Mark's Basilica in Venice. Folio (336 x 205 mm). Contemporary speckled calf over paste-boards, sides panelled with single gilt fillet, spine richly gilt with red morocco gilt lettering-piece, gilt edges. 2 parts in one volume. I: Xylographic half title, letterpress title with vignette, four-page preface with head-piece and initial, one page index of holy days, full-page allegorical engraving of the Church and 70 plates (numbered). II: Letterpress title with vignette, full-page engraving of the apostles and their symbols, and 50 plates (numbered 71-120); all the engravings finely coloured throughout with some gold heightening, all by a contemporary hand; the 120 plates show over 240 small emblems with mottoes. The plates printed on thick card paper, interleaved. First edition and a superb luxury copy of Krauss's emblematic interpretation of Biblical scenes entitled "Holy Delight of the Eye and Heart", which represents one of the high points of the Baroque period in Southern Germany. All the engravings are specially printed on thick card paper and beautifully coloured in gouache and watercolour, heightened in gold. - Johann Ulrich Krauss (1655-1719) was one of the most successful engravers and publishers at Augsburg in the latter part of the 17th century. This monumental emblem book was conceived as a suite to his famous Picture Bible or Bilderbibel (1698-1700) and follows the same illustrative formula, in which the upper portion of each plate contains an illustration of a Bible scene and the lower portion an engraved circular emblem. Each plate is devoted to a different Saint's day, and each emblem is printed within an elaborate cartouche or frame (the frames serve to emphasise the painterly aspect of these coloured scenes), itself often incorporating small medallion vignettes or emblems. In his artistic style Krauss's ornamental engravings - represented here by the varied and imaginative emblem cartouches - were widely influential in Germany, through their use as models for cabinetmakers, woodworkers and other craftsmen. In this coloured copy, those engravings with frames particularly serve to emphasise the painterly aspect of the scenes. - The artistic colouring of this copy adds expressive details and nuances of light, hue and shadow not supplied by the engravings themselves. It was likely executed, possibly under the artist's direction, either for presentation to a high-ranking patron or on commission for a wealthy customer. To avoid bleed-through of the colour the plates were specially printed on heavy, card-like paper, making this copy nearly twice as thick as ordinary copies. With its characteristic German Baroque palette of delicate pinks and blues and rich greens, enhanced by sparingly but gorgeously applied touches of gold, the colouring transforms many of the pictorial illustrations into veritable miniature paintings. - A coloured copy of Krauss's Bilderbibel, also on thick paper, is recorded (cf. Tenschert catalogue XLVIII, 98), but we can trace no other coloured copies of the present edition. In his 1933 study of the illustration of the Bilderbibel and its suites, Otto Reichl made no mention of any coloured copies. - Occasional minor marginal soiling or paper discoloration, small marginal repairs to 2 text leaves, plate 32 with small light stain, small tear to head of spine; else fine. Prepared by the Spanish priest, theologian, writer and poet Esteban de Aguilar y Zúñiga (1606-81), all of whose works are scarce and sought-after. - Contemporary ownership of Emmanuel González de Páz to flyleaf and third page. Handwritten notes including bibliographical references and suggestions for further reading to lower flyleaf and blank verso of last page. Occasional underlinings and marginal notes in the text. Erste Ausgabe dieses originellen enzyklopädischen Kompendiums des lasterhaften Lebens, klassifiziert nach den zehn Geboten, gegen die sie jeweils verstoßen, mit zahlreichen Beispielen aus Geschichte und lebensweltlicher Praxis. Unter den behandelten Untugenden: Entblößen der weiblichen Brüste ("oder dünnen durchsichtigen Flor und klare Leinwad oder Cammer-Tuch auf die Brüste legen und drüber herthun, daß die Haut durchschimmern und leuchten muß"), Onanie, Unzucht mit dem "leidigen Satan", Flüche, Zauberei, Wahrsagerei, verschiedene einzeln genannte Techniken, sich kugelfest oder unsichtbar zu machen, fünf ausführlich diskutierte Gattungen der "Fresserey und Saufferey" ("Es giebt der Leut viel, die selten was gutes essen oder trincken, und wenn sie denn einmal die Gelegenheit dazu bekommen, möchten sie gern alles allein verzehren, sie sehen nicht gern, daß jemand mit isset oder mit trincket, sie schlucken das Essen und schütten den Tranck in sich, wie die Schweine und Kühe, es heiset bey ihnen immer, bring her, bring her") etc. Der hübsche gestochene Titel bringt zehn emblematische Darstellungen im Rund, welche die Titelkartusche einrahmen. - Der Theologe Reinhard (1645-91), "Pastor und Superintendent zu Hilpershausen, wie auch des Consistorii daselbst Assessor, [...] studirte zu Coburg, Straßburg und Wittenberg [...] und starb 1691 den 25. Luxurious dark green morocco by Hippolyte Duru (signed and dated 1850), covers ruled in blind, spine ruled around five raised bands and lettered in gilt. Leading edges gilt; finely gilt inner dentelle. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. The first edition of one of the most important works written and published in French in the 16th century: a highly desirable example, one of the tallest seen on the market for decades. Title-page of part 1 in the second state, that of part 2 in the third state. - Montaigne's groundbreaking essays on an eclectic array of subjects - from cannibals to solitude, from sleep to sadness - constituted an entirely unique and unprecedented literary genre, and a philosophy of knowledge that was based on his own personal experience and observations, epitomizing 16th century enlightened scepticism. "The most elaborate essay, the 'Apologie de Raimond Sebonde', is second to no other modern writing in attacking fanaticism and pleading for tolerance" (PMM). "D’ébauches en corrections, de remords en précisions, Montaigne échafaude une des œuvres maîtresses de l’esprit humain" (Francis Pottiée-Sperry, En français dans le texte, no. 73). - The publishing history of this work is complex, both for the rather careless printing of the first edition, and in large part because the changes to the text between editions were considerable: Montaigne's text was by no means static but constantly evolved under the eye of the author who "considered each new edition as the last". This first edition was printed by Millanges in the spring of 1580. It is unsophisticated and rather hastily composed, as betrayed by the innumerable misprints, font and type inconsistencies, errors in page numbering and textual variants. Indeed, "the pagination of vol. ii is very irregular with so many variants that it is impossible to reconstruct an ideal pagination. Probably no two copies are the same" (Sayce & Maskell, p. 4). The first part of this copy has G2 and 2A5 missigned as 2G and A5, while 2A2 is correctly signed as Aa2 (not as Aa; see Sayce & Maskell, p. 2), and the corrected states of C8 and O8 (ibid., p. 5, note 7), as well as the letters 'gsit' accidentally printed at the foot of Gg3 (ibid., p. 6, no. 9). The irregular spacing of lines on the page - occasionally very cramped - indicates composition by form. - Copies of early editions of Montaigne's work are extremely rare. Fewer than 100 examples are estimated to exist in private and institutional collections worldwide, suggested by some to point to a small original print run of only 300 to 400 copies (Bibliotheca Desaniana, no. 8, 2011; Balsamo, p. 160). - Complete with both errata leaves at the end; "l'un de ces deux feuillets manque souvent" (Sotheby's Paris, 27 Nov. 2003: EUR 337,875). A fine, uncommonly wide-margined specimen from the library of the French historian Emmanuel Pierre Rodocanachi (1859-1934) with three bookplates to pastedown and front free endpaper. Manuscript gift inscription on flyleaf dated 1964; otherwise a very clean and fresh copy. Very rare first edition of this account of Hendrica Leurs, accused of having forged and passed into circulation a large number of banknotes. The work was published by Leurs’ attorney, whether to garner popular support for his client or simply to capitalize on the extreme notoriety of the case. - In 1836, Hendrica Leurs moved her thriving educational institute for ‘young ladies of the most civilized and decent disposition’ to the New Canal in Utrecht. Leurs had served as a governess to several prominent families before opening her own school, which enjoyed an excellent reputation among its well-to-do clientele. At the same time, however, counterfeit banknotes began to surface around the city - paper notes being something of a novelty, these had been rather patently forged with a pen on unwatermarked paper, imitating the engraved originals just about well enough to fool an undiscerning user. The trail of these bills inevitably led to Leurs’ fashionable boarding school on the New Canal, and she was arrested on October 14th, 1837. - The prosecution called for the death penalty; the trial in November was packed with eager observers. Leurs initially defended herself by claiming that she had received a large quantity of the notes from an Amsterdam cashier’s firm and had naively re-circulated them. The prosecution noted that Hendrica’s handwriting matched that used on the banknotes; when she fell under suspicion, she had immediately sought to burn the counterfeit notes in her possession, thereby incriminating herself further. Leur’s lawyer, Van de Poll, pointed out in her defense that it was extremely unlikely that she had committed the crime. She spent all her time in her school, surrounded at all hours by servants and pupils, and could not have had the time to manufacture the banknotes in secrecy. Why would this well-educated woman have mis-spelled the names of the President and Secretary of the Nederlansche Bank on the forged notes – especially when she was governess to the children of very good friends of President Muilman? Numerous clients of Leurs took the stand to testify to her good character; furthermore, all confirmed that Leurs was certainly not in dire need of supplemental income. - When Hendrica Leurs was acquitted on the 29th November (presumably after the publication of the present work), she fainted. In the following months she attempted to resuscitate her failed boarding school, but apparently to no avail. In 1839 she changed her name to Henrietta and left for Indonesia, establishing herself as a private tutor, where she died in 1870. The mystery of the forged banknotes of 1836/7 has never been resolved. - OCLC shows 1 copy in US libraries, at the New York Public Library. Excessively rare, early edition of one of the most important and influential manuals of exorcism and remedies against evil spirits, first published in Venice in 1600 and once included in the Index of forbidden books. Visconti, a professional exorcist from Milan, belonged to the order of SS. Barnaba e Ambrogio, a company of secular priests founded by Carlo Borromeo. He taught the art of exorcism (he is referred to on the title-page as a professor of the art of exorcism and perhaps taught at the university of Pavia) and flourished between the late 16th and early 17th century. - This highly interesting treatise addresses all aspects of exorcism and provides the theological and theoretic framework for the practise of exorcism as well as a manual of instruction on techniques, prayers, formulae, rituals and all sorts of remedies to expel the Evil within. As pointed out in the initial dedication, Visconti hoped that his book would help reduce the number of cases of demonic possession recently recorded in the Milanese area. - Top spine end chipped. Fu polemico verso l'ortodossia greca e i suoi scritti sono fondamentali per la storia delle eresie cristiane e le controversie teologiche medioevali. Prima versione latina dal greco, fatta da Philippus Saulum, dei dotti estesi commenti di Euthymius al testo dei 150 salmi di David. Splendida impressione di Verona del primo cinquecento, assai rara. I Sabio furono chiamati a Verona dal vescovo Giberti, che fornì loro il materiale tipografico; l'indirizzo della loro bottega era ''appresso il Domo''. Titolo a stampa rossa e nera con grande stemma di Papa Paolo V, cui l'opera è dedicata, inc. in rame; testo su due colonne, iniz. silogr., bella vignetta silogr. in fine raffig. la Vergine col Bambino, angeli e Santi. Trattasi del solo primo volume (su 7) della vasta dottissima opera contro gli eretici d'ogni tempo che l'autore (1547-1653) andò pubblicando dal 1619 al 1639 (cfr. Cat. SBN); altri 7 vol., come afferma il Graesse, rimasero inediti. Questo primo vol., che può ben stare a sé, comprende un ampio prologo, la ''methodica analysis'' ed i primi quattro libri della trattazione. Curiosa la pagina 115 che mostra la ''Lutherographia in qua genealogia, origo, accretio Cacangelicorum cum suo stipiete et collateralibus ramis''. Prima edizione di quest'opera dedicata al rinvenimento dell'antico teatro romano di Padova chiamato "Zairo", avvenuto nel 1775 durante i lavori coi quali l'architetto Domenico Cerato progettò e realizzò la grande Piazza di Prato della Valle. Lo Stratico racconta dettagliatamente la scoperta, cercando, inoltre, di ridare vita a quella vecchia struttura che un tempo conteneva 6800 spettatori e che era stata in gran parte distrutta durante il Rinascimento, periodo in cui aveva avuto la funzione di magazzino per materiali edili, utili per la costruzione della chiesa di S. Giustina e per il Ponte di Rialto di Venezia. Nell'ultima parte dell'opera l'autore confronta la capienza dei teatri antichi, critica il saggio di Sander "On theatre" e termina con una breve storia dell'architettura teatrale moderna. Nei ff. preliminari leggesi la lunga "esortazione al pio lettore" di Erasmo da Rotterdam, il quale è autore anche dell'ampia Vita di S. Atanasio che abbraccia gli ultimi 20 ff. Edizione importantissima, una tra le prime, delle opere di Sant'Atanasio, vescovo di Alessandria, Padre e Dottore della Chiesa, vissuto tra il 295 ed il 373 d.C. Tra le principali opere, apologetiche e dogmatiche, citiamo il Trattato contro i Greci, il Trattato sulla Incarnazione del Verbo, l'Apologia contro gli Ariani. Da segnalare l'importanza dei due scritti di Erasmo già citati e la presenza di Angelo Poliziano tra traduttori. Bell'esempl., puro e genuino, con note di mano coeva nel margine dei primi ff., ex-libris manoscritto della "Fundationis Baldauficae" sulla sguardia e suo antico timbro sul titolo (fori di tarlo all'inizio e più sensibili in fine).. J.B.Bossuet (1627-1704), fu notissimo teologo e filosofo, precettore del Delfino di Francia. Esemplare assai puro.. .

in-4 (200x150), ff. 28 n.n. (A2 B-D4 E2 a-c4), legatura del XIX secolo in mezza pelle e angoli, titolo e fregi oro sul dorso. Con 12 belle silografie a piena pagina raffiguranti le Sibille e numerose iniziali istoriate. Rara e bella edizione variamente datata tra 1495 (Sander) e 1520 (Edit16) di questa raccolta di ''Opuscula'' pubblicati la prima volta nel 1481. L'autore, nato a Siracusa verso la metà del XV sec., entrò nell'Ordine dei Predicatori, insegnò filosofia e teologia ed ebbe l'incarico di inquisitore del S.Uffizio. La raccolta comprende varie opere tra cui solo la prima le ''Discordantiae sanctorum doctorum Hieronymi et Augustini'' del Barbieri e da lui ritenuta a sua più importante produzione di carattere scientifico. In questo trattato composto per volontà dell'imperatore difende, quasi polemicamente, la scuola tomistica, secondo la quale nel pensiero di San Tommaso sono contenute la scienza e la verità. Il contenuto degli altri scritti degli ''Opuscula'' (i vaticini delle sibille, i carmi della poetessa Falconia, il simbolo anastasiano ...) induce a pensare che questa raccolta fosse destinata a uso scolastico; conobbe una certa fortuna e varie edizioni, alcune delle quali successive alla morte del Barbieri. Annotazioni di antica mano sul contenuto dell'opera al titolo e ai primi ff., numerose sottolineature n.t. Esemplare un po' corto al margine superiore.. Sander 775. Essling 2316. In-4, ff.128 (mancano il primo e l'ultimo bianchi). Legatura settecentesca in piena pergamena, titolo in oro su tassello granata. Tagli spruzzati. Circa un terzo del volume è interessato da una gora d'acqua nel margine interno, l'ultimo quaderno anche all'esterno e gli ultimi 5 fogli hanno un'integrazione cartacea all'angolo superiore senza perdita di testo. Per il resto, esemplare su carta forte, bella e nitida impressione, ampi margini. Voluta e curata dal vigevanese Giovanni Andrea Bussi, si tratta della prima edizione dei sermoni di Papa Leone Magno. Johannes Andrea fu accolito del papa Niccolò V, vescovo della Diocesi di Accia e di Aleria in Corsica, bibliotecario della Biblioteca Vaticana e segretario pontificio. Raccolse ed emendò numerosi codici e, dal 1468, curò le editiones principes di molti autori latini per i tipografi romani. Con lui la prefazione si ampliò da semplice lettera personale al patrono, diventando una lezione pubblica o anche un'omelia. Al contropiatto ex-libris della famiglia Dionisi, tra le più antiche della nobiltà di Verona: il marchese Gabriele (1719-1808) fu l'artefice della ristrutturazione della villa a Ca' del lago di Cerea nonché del riordino e aggiornamento della biblioteca. I Dionisi avevano destinato al piano nobile la funzione di libreria e sala di lettura, precoce esempio di centro culturale dove si riunivano artisti e letterati. Dopo la dispersione delle migliaia di volumi del fondo antico, conserva ora i libri sul mobile d'arte contemporaneo della Fondazione Aldo Morelato..
