Early edition of the atheist and materialist philosopher d'Holbach's treatise in which he develops his concept of "ethocracy", a just state whose main purpose is the general welfare. Holbach's foundational view is that the most valuable thing a person seeking self-preservation can do is to unite with another person: 'Man is of all beings the most necessary to man' [...] Society, when it is just, unites for the common purpose of preservation and the securing of welfare, and society contracts with government for this purpose" (Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy). Galle, Cornelius / Puget de la Serre, Jean.
Les Merveilles de l'Amour Divin... Enrichie des Figures. Brussels, Francois Vivien, 1633.
4to. (6) ff, 323 [i.e. 327] pp, (1), including additional engraved title signed C. Galle after N. van der Horst, vignette on title-page, frontispiece portrait of the dedicatee (Mademoiselle D'Arschot) and 6 full-page plates by Galle after A. Sallaert. Contemporary velum. Old ex-libris markings of various religious libraries on pastedown and title-page only; tiny areas of loss to uppermost margin of added engr. title; very occasional light dampstaining; with engravings in excellent, dark impression. Rare sole edition of this Flemish devotional work on the Passion, curiously dedicated to a princess’ lady-in-waiting. It is illustrated with seven full-page engravings by Cornelius Galle, son of Philip, after the painter and draughtsman Antoine Sallaert. Although they cannot be considered proper emblems with mottoes, Praz mentions de la Serre and his devotional books passim in Studies in Seventeenth-Century Imagery (Vol II, p. 133). - The present work bears a curious dedication to the lady-in-waiting of the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Philip IV. 'Demoiselle' d'Arschot, as she is called, is pictured in the engraved frontispiece as an adolescent girl, already exemplifying the virtues of a pious noblewoman. She clutches in one hand a string of prayer beads, while in front of her is her own personal altarpiece with a candle and crucifix, and a cloth-covered lectern for reading her devotions while kneeling. - The text itself is divided into six chapters, each of which is headed by an engraving incorporating its relevant themes. The text is intended to impress upon the reader the manifestations of God's love, as observed in the story of the Passion. As Van der Vennet notes, the Brussels painter Antoine Sallaert's rich designs are especially suited to Puget de la Serre's Merveilles: “the subjects of [Sallaert's] compositions display on the one hand an attachment to the tradition but at the same time an openness to the new developments which were taking place during the 17th century. While his saints conserve their legendary attributes, certain forms of symbolism, popular during the Middle Ages, disappear... However, neither the Counter-Reformation, nor the doctrines of the Council [of Trent] managed to wipe out the taste for the marvelous; which was fed during the 17th century by religious ecstasies and visions. The great devotional images which Sallaert composed for the graver are full of such raptures...” (“Le Peintre bruxellois”, p. 85-7). - Van der Vennet also speaks highly of the present work in particular: “In Les Merveilles de l'Amour Divin, which appeared in 1633, the master illustrates six episodes of the Passion. The elegance and precision of the designs tends towards a beautiful reservedness in evoking these dramatic subjects. As to the composition of these pages, the images appear so large than one almost forgets their small format. The admirable 'Christ of the Pieta' (fig II) and the persons surrounding him, would have their place on a great altarpiece...” (p. 93). - The engraver Cornelius Galle (1576-1650) represented the second generation of the great Galle dynasty. From 1596-1610 Cornelius lived and worked in Rome, before returning to Antwerp where he collaborated with his father as well as preparing his own plates. - OCLC shows a single US copy, at Harvard. Old Hollstein Vol 7, #418; cf also Le Livre, l'estampe, l'édition en Brabant du XVe au XIXe siècle (1935), p. 99; and M. Tulk, John Augustus / Swedenborg, Emmanuel.
Index to the Passages of Sacred Scripture contained in the Arcana Coelestia… [Bound with:] Index to the Arcana Coelestia; or Heavenly Mysteries contained in the Sacred Scriptures. London, Philanthropic Society and sold for the Editor by the Society for Printing and Publishing the Writings of the Honourable Emanuel Swedenborg, 1810-1811.
8vo. [1] ff, 120 pp; [3] ff including 1 leaf of errata, [230] ff. contemporary tree calf with gilt trim, rebacked with modern gilt and red title label, original marbled endpapers preserved. Pages clean and fresh, an excellent copy internally. Contemporary (?) portrait of Swedenborg and caption mounted on front endpaper. Two very rare Swedenborgian imprints, prepared and published at the expense of the industrialist John Augustus Tulk (cf Hyde), and some of the earliest books to issue from the press of the newly-formed ‘London Society for Printing and Publishing the Works of Emanuel Swedenborg’. Published at the height of Swedenborg's popularity in England (when the sect counted luminaries such as William Blake among its members), the present indices were designed to aid in the reading of Swedenborg’s monumental multi-volume Arcana Coelestia, finally translated in its entirety into English in 1806. COPAC shows the Index to the Passages of Sacred Scripture at Manchester only; the Index to the Arcana Coelestia is held at Edinburgh, NLS, Glasgow, Chetham’s Library, and Manchester. - Originally published during Swedenborg’s residence in London between 1749 and 1756, the Arcana Coelestia (‘Heavenly Mysteries’) was the mystic’s most comprehensive attempt at a biblical exegesis, covering the whole of Genesis and Exodus. That work also contained numerous personal observations of the Swedenborgian spiritual world, including his experiences of heaven and hell, not to mention the inhabitants of other planets which Swedenborg purported to have met. As a necessary guide to this voluminous work, Swedenborg also prepared an Index to the Heavenly Mysteries (1st ed, Latin 1756) which remained untranslated until the present work. - Tulk’s translations were likely meant to accompany John Clowes’ English translation of the entire Arcana (comprising some 12 volumes), which was finally completed in 1806. J. A. Tulk himself (1756-1845) was one of the founding members of the Swedenborg Society, and its first Chairman. A wealthy industrialist, his son Charles (MP for Sudbury) would introduce Swedenborg’s philosophy to the likes of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Blake. - The Swedenborg Society, or ‘London Society for Printing and Publishing the Works of Emanuel Swedenborg’, as it was originally called, was founded on the 26th of February 1810 by figures including Tulk and the famous sculptor John Flaxman. The present works thus represent some of the earliest efforts of this society to translate and propagate the writings of their controversial but increasingly popular religion. J. Hyde, A Bibliography of the Works of Emanuel Swedenborg (Nos. 942 & 943).

[Miniature Bible].
The Bible in Miniature, or a Concise History of the Old & New Testaments. London, printed for W. Harris, 1775.
32mo (30 x 48 mm). 2 parts in one volume. (2), 148, (2), 149-256 pp. With 2 engraved title-pages and 14 engraved plates. Contemporary giltstamped red morocco with central black morocco oval onlay to covers bearing the sacred initials "IHS". All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Third edition of this exceedingly rare abridged children's Bible in its original binding, previously published in 1771 and 1774. Hariss's "Bible in Miniature" is the second of its kind in England, preceded only by the 1727 "Biblia" printed for R. Wilkin (the date being altered by hand to 1728 in many copies). - This is a charming specimen of what is commonly called a thumb Bible due to its small size, a genre that flourished particularly during the 18th century, although the fashion continued well into the 19th century. While copies of the almost identical "Bible in Miniature", published in 1780 by Elizabeth Newbery, are much more frequently found, the plates of the Harris edition are "superior to the frequently worn-out illustrations used by Newbery" (Spielmann). They feature key scenes and figures of the Old and New Testaments, including Adam and Eve, King David, Joseph of Arimathea, the Nativity, Resurrection, and Judgment Day. - In excellent condition, with contemporary handwritten ownership of "Miss Cooper" to flyleaf. Rarely seen at auction: only a handful of copies in libraries worldwide, merely on microfilm in the UK; 3 copies in the United States. Bondy, Miniature Books 33. Cf. Spielmann, Catalogue of the library of miniature books 16 (1771 edition). Welsh, Bibliography of miniature books 1009. Roscoe, Thumb Bibles J2616.

[Mengzi].
Mencius (Chinese). [Paris, Societatis Asiaticae] & C. de Lasteyrie, [1829-1830].
4to. 2 parts in one volume. (2), 122, 161, (1) pp. Lithographically printed Chinese text, one leaf apparently bound out of sequence, some pages incorrectly numbered or not numbered. In total, the title-page, 283 pp. and 2 blanks (the last page and the verso of the title page). Bound in a sturdy green half calf, ca. 1900. The doctrines of the Chinese philosopher Mengzi (fl. 300 BC), the principal successor to Confucius. This is one of the earliest Chinese texts to be printed in Europe and a landmark in lithographic printing. The Chinese text here is complete in two parts. Lasteyrie had produced a Latin translation by Stanislas Julien (1797-1893) in 1824-26 ("Meng tseu, vel, Mencium inter Sinenses philosophos ingenio, doctrina, nominisque claritate Confucio proximum"), and while the Latin text is not particularly rare, the lithographed set (which was to serve as a supplement) is very much so. The plates were lithographed by the Comte de Lasteyrie, Charles Philibert Lasteyrie du Saillant (1759-1849), an innovator in lithographic printing in France. He carried out the work at his own cost. - Title-page browned and laid down, pp. 150ff. have a stain affecting several leaves, p. 162 patched. Much of the text is remarkably fresh and the binding is entirely solid. Incorrectly stamped 'Confucius' on the spine. Provenance: bookplate of George May Elwood (1844-1906) on rear pastedown (designed by Harold M. Ellis, dated 1898), his label on the front pastedown. Not in OCLC.

Acquaviva, Andrea Matteo.
Illustrium, et exquisitissimarum disputationum libri quatuor: quibus omnis divinae atque humanae sapientiae, praesertim animi moderatricis musicae, atque astrologiae, arcana, In Plutarchi Chaeronei De virtute morali praeceptionibus recondita [...]. Frankfurt, Johann Theobald Schönwetter, 1609.
4to. (16), 48 (recte: 44), 171, (16) pp., final blank page. Title-page with engraved border. With several woodcut illustrations in the text, and 2 folding plates. 17th century full vellum. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Rare edition of the extensive commentary on Plutarch's essay "De virtute morali" by the humanist and Duke of Atri, A. M. Acquaviva (1458-1529), first published in 1526. The present edition, published nearly 80 years later, is a reprint of the first, and was edited by the humanist Giulio Belli (1570-1650). Apart from the four-book commentary, which makes up the largest part of the volume, it includes Plutarch's text in Greek type and Latin translation. The majority of the woodcut illustrations accompany the commentary on Plutarch's writings on astronomy (pp. 78-96), displaying the orbits of the sun, moon, Earth, and other planets, as well as the section on Pseudo-Plutarch's "De musica" (pp. 26-77), showing bells and musical scales. Attributed to Plutarch, "De musica" was included in several editions of the "Moralia", a text corpus of 78 essays and speeches ascribed to the first-century Greek scholar. - Handwritten ownership of the Venice senator and collector Giacomo Soranzo (1686-1761), dated 1736, to second flyleaf. His library, comprising 4,000 manuscripts and 20,000 printed books, was dispersed in 1780. The first flyleaf bears a handwritten note of acquisition, dated December 1803, as well as another note in a different handwriting referencing reviews of other works by the editor Belli. - Lower portion of spine somewhat rubbed; covers slightly soiled. Title-page duststained, margins worn, rebacked with paper; upper margins of flyleaves and of 3 first leaves of text flawed, the latter rebacked with paper strips; paper occasionally browned and brownstained; gutter slighlty waterstained in places. A single copy in auction records. Only 12 copies in libraries internationally, none outside of Europe. VD 17, 12:188378T. RISM BVI 64. OCLC 844058263. STC (C17 German) P778. Houzeau/Lancaster 5038. [Montaigne, Michel de.
Essais de Messire Michel Seigneur de Montaigne, Chevalier de l'Ordre du Roy, & Gentil-homme ordinaire de sa Chambre. Livre premier. Bordeaux, Simon Millanges, 1580].
8vo (104 x 152 mm). 3-480 (instead of 496) pp., lacking title and remaining 3 leaves of preliminaries, first leaf of text, and 8 leaves between p. "276" and "294". 17th century full calf with gilt spine and labels "Essais de Montaig" - "Tom I", leading edges gilt. Edges sprinkled blue. First edition of one of the most important works written and published in French in the 16th century. Incomplete copy of the first part only, lacking the first five leaves as well as the eight leaves comprising the 29 sonnets. - Montaigne's groundbreaking essays on an eclectic array of subjects - from cannibals to solitude, from sleep to sadness - constituted an entirely unique and unprecedented literary genre, and a philosophy of knowledge that was based on his own personal experience and observations, epitomizing 16th century enlightened scepticism. "The most elaborate essay, the 'Apologie de Raimond Sebonde', is second to no other modern writing in attacking fanaticism and pleading for tolerance" (PMM). - The publishing history of this work is complex, both for the rather careless printing of the first edition, and in large part because the changes to the text between editions were considerable: Montaigne's text was by no means static but constantly evolved under the eye of the author who "considered each new edition as the last". This first edition, printed by Millanges in the spring of 1580, is unsophisticated and rather hastily composed, as betrayed by the innumerable misprints, font and type inconsistencies, errors in page numbering and textual variants. This copy has G2 and Aa5 missigned as 2G and A5, while Aa2 is correctly signed thus (not as Aa; see Sayce & Maskell, p. 2), and the corrected states of C8 and O8 (ibid., p. 5, note 7), as well as the letters 'gsit' accidentally printed at the foot of Gg3 (ibid., p. 6, no. 9). The irregular spacing of lines on the page - occasionally very cramped - indicates composition by forme. - Copies of early editions of Montaigne's work are extremely rare. Fewer than 100 examples are estimated to exist in private and institutional collections worldwide, suggested by some to point to a small original print run of only 300 to 400 copies (Bibliotheca Desaniana, no. 8, 2011; Balsamo, p. 160). - Corners bumped, spine-ends chipped, hinges starting. Paper somewhat browned. PMM 95. Sayce & Maskell 1. Tchemerzine IV, 870. Brunet III, 1835.

Froriep, Justus Friedrich.
Corani caput primum et secundi versus priores. Arabice et latine cum animadversionibus historicis et philologicis [...]. Leipzig, (Loeper for) Hilscher, 1768.
8vo. XVI, 64 pp. Later plain paper wrappers with handwritten cover-title. First edition. - Early Western edition of a part of the Quran, comprising the first and 79 verses of the second surah (Al-Fatihah and Al-Baqarah) in Latin and Arabic, edited and translated by the German theologian and orientalist Froriep (1745-1800). A planned sequel to this work, promised by Froriep "provided this specimen is met with approval" (cf. Ernesti), was never realized. - The Arabic text is taken from the well-received Maracci edition. The text is followed by historical and philological observations on the same, drawing on Ludovico Maracci, George Sale, Adriaan Reland and others, as well as explanations of several passages of the Old Testament. - Light edge wear to wrappers; interior somewhat browned and brownstained. Contemporary ownership stamp to verso of title-page, another stamp reading "Card Catalogued" to title-page. A good copy of this rare work never seen at auction. Schnurrer 383. Fine late mediaeval sermon manuscript owned by the Viennese theologian Johann Hofmüllner of Weitra (d. 1475), with an anti-Waldensian treatise at the end. The first part contains mainly homilies for various feast days and Bible passages drawn from St Augustine and the Venerable Bede: - 1r: In vigilia ascensionis. S. Johan. In illo tempore sublevatis Ihesus oculis in celum ... Oml. bti. Aug. epi. Clarificatum a patre formam secundum sui filium ... - 150v: Ach her got hilf. Finis adest libro sit laus et gloria. Explicit iste labor ... Deo gratias Amen. - 151-156: vacant. - Followed by additional homilies by Bede, Augustine, Origin, Isidorus Hispalensis, Severinus etc: - 157r: Incipiunt omelie per circulum anni [...]. Igitur quoniam post tempus spiritualibus epulis nos reficere debemus [...]. - 216v: ... matres tulerunt quidquid et angoris extitit et doloris et ideo non [breaks off]. - The final part contains the first 21 chapters of Petrus Zwicker's "Liber contra Waldenses": 217r: Ortus et origo Waldensium haereticorum talis est ...; 227v: ... vel non commisit illud per sufficientiam poenitentiam diluit immediate [breaks off]. Transmitted in some 50 manuscripts, this treatise (erroneously attributed to Peter of Pilichdorf by its first editor, Jakob Gretser) constitutes "the single most important text on the Waldensians from the later Middle Ages" (Biller, The Waldenses, p. 237). - Provenance: several autograph ownerships by Johannes Hofmüllner: "Iste liber est Johannis Hofmulnar de weyttra" (1r), "Hic liber est Johan[n]is Hofmuln[er] de weyttra. 1447" (150r); later in the library of the Servite Order in Vienna's Rossau suburb with their 18th century engraved bookplate on the front pastedown and a smaller version thereof on the first page; handwritten shelfmark "MS 71" (olim: 21), stricken out and re-marked "CV/19" in red pencil. - The majority of the known surviving codices from Hofmüllner's private collection was acquired by the library of Seitenstetten Abbey in Lower Austria at some time during the last decades of the 15th century: a total of 17 or possibly 18 volumes. One other volume is in the Austrian National Library (Cod. 4059), while another, previously also in Seitenstetten, is now kept in The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (Ms. W.30). How and when exactly the volumes in Seitenstetten were acquired - during Hofmüllner's lifetime, or as a bequest, or a purchase - is not known, nor how many books Hofmüllner's library originally comprised (cf. Cerny, p. 8). "We first find Hofmüllner as a scribe of manuscripts in 1437, serving as 'cooperator divinorum' in Waidhofen an der Thaya. The following year he is in Vienna, soon in the office of an octonarius at St. Stephen's Cathedral (attested in 1445) [...] He is confirmed as serving in the office of magister chori in 1448. From his books, it would seem quite obvious that Hofmüllner consciously endeavoured to keep up to date on contemporary theological literature and to expand his library continually by writing and by buying new manuscripts [...] Indeed, Johann Hofmüllner was a generous man in many ways who gave away large sums of money for pious causes" (cf. ibid., p. 27f.). - Condition: binding rubbed and slightly chafed in a few places. Two leaves (167-168) have a large, straight tear in the upper edge reaching into the text. Insignificant worming to the upper corner from fol. 157 onwards, not concerning the text. Occasional marginalia and manicules, apparently some by Hofmüllner. Altogether a very appealing codex bound in a massive, dyed binding, complete with all the original brass bosses and fittings save for the lower clasp. For Hofmüllner cf. Heimo Cerny, Beiträge zur Geschichte der Wissenschaftspflege in den Stiften Seitenstetten und Ardagger (PhD thesis, Vienna 1966). For Zwicker's treatise cf. Kautilya [also called Canakya or Visnugupta Galanos Demetrios].
Synopsis gnomon ethikon [...].
4to (185 x 250 mm) 49, (3) pp. Modern marbled paper. First edition of this extremely rare pamphlet in modern Greek, itself translated from the Sanskrit - not, as the title says, by Nikolaos Kephalas, but in fact by the savant Demetrios Galanos. Kautilya was an Indian political theorist and minister of Candragupta, who flourished about 300 BCE, but was better known under the name Canakya (or Chanakya). Various works are attributed to him. This work introduced him to Europe, and a French translation, made from the Italian by Leon Bezout, was published in 1826. It is divided into eight chapters and contains some 148 "Sayings" with two preliminary paragraphs, the Greek and Italian versions being printed in parallel columns. There are also a number of notes printed beneath these columns, also in both languages. The "Sayings" are concerned with many facets of life: "if you are a learned man, make sure you are recognized as such; if you are not, confess your ignorance" (I, 15); "The clemency of a king towards his subjects should be the same as that of a father to his own sons" (IV, 6); "Heroes, learned men, and beautiful women, in whatever country they find themselves, immediately find an hourable reception" (VIII, 1). - Galanos (1760-1833), a Greek from Athens, was destined for priesthood and studied at Missolonghi under Panagiotes Palamas, and then at Patmos. After a brief sojourn in Constantinople, he went to Bengal as tutor to the children of a Greek merchant. He himself clearly became a successful merchant, as he amassed enough money to abandon commerce in 1793 and devote himself solely to scholarship and the study of Sanskrit at Varanasi, which he continued to do until his death. He was well known in India and was referred to (without being named) by Bishop Heber of Calcutta. Like that of the the Jews and the Armenians, the Greek commercial community in Calcutta flourished. - In addition to his massive lexicographical work, which was never published and survives only in manuscript in Athens (his mss. have been stored in the National Library since 1837), Galanos made a number of translations from the Sanskrit. Some of these were posthumously published by George Kozakis Typaldos, from 1842 director of the National Library of Greece, including an abridgment of the Mahabharata (a volume of 900 pages) and the "Bhagavadgita", but most remain in manuscript. - Nikolaos Kefalas or Niccolo Chiefala was born ca. 1765 on Zante (Zakynthos) and was therefore a British subject, but he was forever in trouble with the British authorities. Before 1812 he fought in the French army in Europe; in that year he returned to Constantinople, which he was immediately required to leave by the British consul, though it was the Turks who ensured his departure. This adventurer was the author of numerous works published from 1817 to 1845 in Vienna and elsewhere (the last in Athens), including works on sailing and marine matters, two maps (one a sea chart) published in Paris in 1818, and a description of Benares, published in Livorno. Kefalas was referred to by Pouqueville (Histoire VI, 12 [1824] as "cet intriguant", and his appropriation or theft of Galanos's work is referred to by others. He has in fact added a few things himself. - In an article in the Festschrift for Maurice Bloomfield (Studies in Honor of Maurice Bloomfield, New Haven: Yale UP, 1920) the Homeric philologist Bolling published "The Recension of Canakya used by Galanos". This prints and discusses the (transliterated) Sanskrit original of Galanos's Greek version of nominally 330 (actually 319) verses under the title "Politika, oikonomika kai ethika ex diaforon poieton" by Canakya, which was published in 1845 in his "Indikon metafraseon prodromos". Legrand Bibl. Ionienne (Paris 1910), no. 1068. Papadopoulos, Ionike Vivliografia (Athens 1998), no. 1801 (simply taken from the entry in Legrand). There are copies at the BL, at Princeton, in Leiden and at the Niedersächsische Bibliothek. For Galanos see the article by Siegfried A. Schulz, "Demetrios Galanos (1760-1833): A Greek Indologist", in JAOS 89.2 (April-June 1969), pp. 339-356.

Folio (210 x 305 mm). XII ff. With several woodcut initials. Later red half calf over marbled boards with giltstamped spine-title. First and only edition of this exceedingly rare commentary on Aristotle and Averroes, prepared by the Neapolitan philosopher Giovanni Gomezio Pagano (ca. 1500-69), a leading Franciscan theologian active in the San Lorenzo convent in Naples. Title-page lightly brownstained. A fine copy of this notable work rarely offered in the trade. OCLC lists a single record (in the Italian National Library). Edit 16, CNCE 38268. OCLC 954806038.
