"Impressive in its handling of material at once familiar and esoteric Harper's Bible Dictionary bridges popular and scholarly needs with clear concise presentations of significant results from both scholarly and archaeological investigation. Expert editing is evident: entry contents are authoritative yet for the most part knowledge by laypersons is not taken for granted. In the service of brevity however the editing occasionally has missed a resulting contradiction in the information left in the text e.g. ``Jericho'' p. 460 col. 2. Sources of information are cited from biblical classical and other ancient texts; sources of interpretations are given in brief bibliographies at the end of basic articles. Some expanded articles on more important subjects are set off on their own such as ``Jesus'' 13 pages and ``Jerusalem'' 11 pages. Pronunciation is included for many words as well as some indication as to the sources of their meaning. There are good and appropriate illustrations a chronological table and a collection of maps. Harper's is one of the best; its closest rival is the New Bible Dictionary Leicester 2nd ed. 1982 which has more extensive bibliographies with some annotations and more technical detail but is more conservative in orientation.
