‎Les Synonyma d'Isidore de Seville, ouvrage de contenu ascetique et spirituel mais remarquable aussi par son style synonymique, connurent un tres grand succes au Moyen Age : plus de cinq cents manuscrits en ont ete conserves, et ils furent abondamment cites par les auteurs medievaux. Or pourtant ils n'avaient jamais fait l'objet d'une edition critique : leur derniere edition remontait a pres de deux siecles (c'est celle de F. Arevalo, parue a Rome en 1802, et reproduite dans la Patrologie Latine). Ce volume propose donc la premiere edition critique des Synonyma, fondee sur la collation des manuscrits les plus anciens. La principale nouveaute de ce travail est la distinction entre deux redactions de l'oeuvre, qui sont toutes deux, probablement, de la main d'Isidore ; l'etude des sources incite a penser qu'elles sont issues d'un meme modele que l'auteur aurait corrige de maniere independante. Le titre meme de ?« Synonyma ?» n'est peut-etre pas le seul : on trouve aussi le titre ?« Liber soliloquiorum ?», qui semble lui aussi isidorien. L'autre apport de cette edition est la recherche systematique des sources, qui prouve que, comme dans ses autres oeuvres, Isidore a abondamment emprunte a ses predecesseurs. Esta, por tanto, editio princeps, se basa en sus tres mss. existentes en las bibliothecas de El Escorial (s. XIII), Universitaria de Madrid (s. XIII-XIV) y Provincial de Toledo (s. XVIII).El primero de ellos contiene la redaccion primitiva de la obra, con multitud de correcciones, supresiones y anadidos en los margenes o entre lineas; el de Madrid incluye todas esas correcciones, pero por desgracia se encuentra en un estado lamentable desde la guerra civil espanola y actualmente se halla en proceso de restauracion; su poca utilidad queda salvada, en gran medida, por el codice de Toledo, copiado de el. Dividido en nueve libros, el Breuiariumes una 'biblia historial', a la manera de la Historia Scholasticade Pedro Comestor, su modelo y fuente principal y que, junto con la Glossa, constituye su columna vertebral. A partir de estas dos obras el Toledano incorpora buen numero de fuentes: Josefo, S. Jeronimo, S. Augustin, Beda, Origines, S. Gregorio, etc., a las que anade otras de su propria cosecha, como el Chroniconde S. Isidorio. D. Rodrigo, que habia estudiado en Bolonia y Paris, intenta, por una parte, introducir, en Espana las corrientes teologicas imperantes en la Europa de fines del s. XII y, por otra, suministrar un libro de texto a la naciente Universidad de Palencia, la primera que se constituyo en Espana y que seguia el modelo de la de Paris, pero que acabo por fenecer pronto, entre otras razones, por el apoyo que Alfonso X presto a la Universidad de Salamanca, formada sobre el modelo de la de Bolonia. ‎Se presenta en estes volumenes las que se han denominado Historiae minores de Rodrigo Jimenez de Rada. Esta compuesto por las siguientes obras: Historia Romanorum, Historia Hugnorum, Vandalorum, Sueuorum, Alanorum et Silingorum, Historia Ostrogothorum e Historia Arabum. La finalidad de estas obras la expuso el proprio Toledano en el prologo a su De rebus Hispaniae: contar las historias particulares de los pueblos que han invadido Espana hasta el momento en que esto ocurre. Ademas la Historia Arabum es la primera historia de los arabes que se conoce en Occidente escrita de manera particular. El plan inicial de don Rodrigo era relatar por una parte la historia de Espana (De rebus Hispaniae...) concebida inicialmente como historia de los godos (... siue Historia Gothica) y por otra las invasiones que aquella habia sufrido hasta la llegada de estos (clades quas Hispania pertulit ante eos), de manera que el volumen completo consistiria en De rebus Hispaniae mas la Historia Romanorum y la Historia Hugnorum... Al final ha de escribir tambien la invasion de los musulmanes - y sobre todo en ese momento -, cuya invasion espera que sea la ultima (que utinam sint postrema, Ar. Prol. 4/5). La segunda parte del volumen incluye el Dialogus Libri Vite. El dialogo, mejor, el supuesto dialogo - que no es tal, sino un monologo - se entabla con un judio al que se intenta convencer de que lo se predice en el Viejo Testamento se cumple en el nuevo, sobre todo que es en Jesucristo donde se cumplen todas aquellas profecias, amen de otras noticias de variado caracter sobre los sacramentos, la venida del anticristo etc. Las propias circunstancias de la obra, su mas o menos probable relacion con el resto de las obras del Toledano hacen de ella una obra de atribucion dudosa.
