Old ownership inscription and stamps Polish censor stamp to first leaf. Later green leather binding with gilt ornaments spine faded housed in a marbled cardboard slipcase. This translation was completed by Jekuthiel ben Isaac Blitz and features approbations by the rabbi of Va'ad Arba Artzot as well as by Amsterdam Sephardi and Ashkenazi rabbis dated 1671-1677. The King of Poland had to give special permission for this work to be printed and his approval appears in Yiddish and Latin on the leaves preceding the title page. The 1670s in Amsterdam saw the simultaneous printing of two different Yiddish translations of the Bible: the present edition and another published by Yossef Atias and translated by Joseph Witzenhausen Yossef ben Alexander. This provoked a feud between the two printers with mutual accusations of encroachment and the falsification of rabbinic approval. The resulting litigation caused the financial ruin of both printers. According to Darlow and Moule 5143 'The text is mainly based on the Athias-Leusden edition of 166766 No. 5134'. Beautiful full-page copper plate engraving to frontispiece depicts Moses Aaron King David with a harp kneeling in front of the Ark of the Covenant the sky with God's name suggested by the three 'Yod' letters in the glowing triangle also appears underneath together with a reference to Ezekiel 1:28 which explains the mythical creatures depicted in the cloud. The engraving also includes the title in Hebrew and name Maius as the editor. The magnificent early 18th century binding was most likely custom-made for a wealthy patron bearing his armourial crest on the front cover. Darlow & Moule 5143. A most imposing large format family bible in an excellent state of preservation. John Brown 1754-1832 minister and theolgian was of humble origins and little formal education and worked as a shepherd in his early years. It was perhaps this background that led him to produce a well annotated bible intended to make it accesible to ordinary men and women: "The Self-Interpreting Bible remained in print until the twentieth century in much revised form. Brown transferred lists tables and other such aids from his dictionary. The Bible was a far more substantial work which did not prevent its becoming as Robert Burns bore out as familiar in Presbyterian households as John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and Thomas Boston's Human Nature in its Fourfold State. Brown's text was furnished with a battery of cross-references minor marginal notes short introductions to each book a summary of contents at the head of each chapter 'reflections' on each chapter—in effect applying its message to readers—and explanatory footnotes. A lengthy introduction deals with the Bible's authority and inspiration its interpretation and biblical history from creation. Modern brown calf boards embossed floral ornaments and gilt title to spine matching calf and red cloth slipcase; library stamps previous owners' signatures; inscription by a censor from Bologna on second to last page l. 25 partially lost due to trimming. Third edition of Bomberg's Rabbinic Bible which includes the five books of the Torah bound together with Haftarot and Hamesh Megilot. With Targum Onkeles and commentaries by Rashi Nachmanides and the First Edition of the super-commentary on Nachmanides by Isaac Aboab. In 1516 Daniel Bomberg a wealthy Christian was granted the privilege of publishing Hebrew books in Venice. Among the first works he printed in 1516-17 was the Mikra'ot Gedolot Rabbinic Bible a folio edition of the entire Bible with commentaries. Pope Leo X gave his imprimatur for this book and Felix Pratensis a monk who had been born a Jew was the editor. Bomberg published the edition in response to growing interest in the Hebrew language and the Bible among learned Christians. The commentaries by Rashi Nahmanides and Gersonides attracted some Jewish readers but the editorship of an apostate and the blessing of the Pope led many Jews to avoid the 1516-17 edition. However the second edition published in Venice in 1524-5 and incorporating the work of the Tunisian refugee Jacob b. Chayim was more successful as was a third edition published in 1546-48. John Baskerville 1706 -1775 English printer and creator of a typeface of great distinction bearing his name whose works are among the finest examples of the art of printing. Baskerville became a writing master at Birmingham but in 1740 established a japanning business whose profits enabled him to experiment in typography. He set up a printing house and in 1757 published his first work an edition of Virgil followed in 1758 by an edition of John Milton. Appointed printer to the University of Cambridge he undertook this edition of the Bible 1763 which is considered his masterpiece. He published an edition of Horace in 1762; the success of a second edition 1770 encouraged him to issue a series of editions of Latin authors. The bold quality of Baskerville's print derived from his use of a highly glossed paper and a truly black ink that he had invented. His typography was much criticised in England and after his death his types were purchased by the French dramatist Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. Their subsequent history is uncertain but in 1917 the surviving punches and matrices were recognised and in 1953 they were presented to the University of Cambridge. Baskerville type has been revived its clarity and balance making it a good type for continuous reading. T.B. London: Printed for R Wilkin 1728. 2 vols bound as 1 64o pp. xii 278 xii� divisional title-page between pp. 154-5 and with 15 woodcut plates including the frontispiece some of which are described at the end of the book 'particular cuts explain'd' page 81 misnumbered 41 cut facing the divisional title mounted on the verso of the final leaf of vol. 1; closed horizontal�tear to frontispiece corners a little rounded contemporary sheep upper joined and headcaps�renewed gilt decoration rubbed supplied with new front free endpaper all edges originally gilt but worn. �Thumb Bibles� became popular devotional books for children in the 17th century often illustrated as here heavily abridged for obvious reasons and rendered into verse. Ours published by Richard Wilkin in 1728 seems to have been the earliest prose version. It was first published in 1727 and there are no copies dated 1728 in UK libraries although ESTC records half a dozen overseas but as the date change from 7 to 8 seems to have been made by hand with the stroke of a pen we are almost certainly looking at exactly the same sheets. The publisher and bookseller Richard Wilkin d.1740 was the son of the Vicar of Heathfield in East Sussex and he bequeathed his library to be kept in the vicarage there for the use of all future incumbents. His upbringing was evidently a significant influence: his imprint occasionally describes him as �R. Wilkin a clergyman�s son� and he seems to have enjoyed publishing Tory and High Church preachers; the overwhelming majority of the books which he published on his own rather than as part of a consortium of other booksellers are theological. The Oriya character used to print "is allied to the Devanagari character" Darlow & Moule.<br> The first portion of the Bible printed in the Oriya language was the N.T. in 1809. This printing of the text of Matthew is in Oriya script while the title is printed on the front wrapper in English and Oriya.<br> WorldCat lists only three earlier printings 1840 1865 1870 each with only one library reporting ownership variously Cambridge British Library National Library of Chile. London: Robert Barker 1613. 1st Edition. Leather bound. THE FIRST EDITION FIRST PRINTING OF THE MOST IMPORTANT VERSION OF THE BIBLE IN ENGLISH - ONE OF THE MONUMENTAL WORKS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE. This is the true 1st edition published from 1611 to 1613. This is the second state with the misprint in Ruth 3:15 corrected from "he" to "she". Folio edition measuring 15.25 x 10.5 inches. The New Testament is dated 1611 and the general titlepage is dated 1613. Scholars believe most of the book was printed in 1611 but not bound and released until 1613. There are two versions: the "Great He" Bible and the "Great She" Bible depending on whether the misprint in Ruth is present. Collates per Herbert Historical Catalogue of Printed Editions of the English Bible 1525-1961 number 319. Darlow & Moule #246. Printing and the Mind of Man #114. General title page heavily chipped repaired with loss to the bottom right quarter of the page. Although this copy offered here has the Genealogies it does not contain the map. The map is seldom present and some scholars question whether it should truly be considered part of the book or seen as a later add-on. Minor wear and spotting thoughout with some heavy staining at the beginning. Some leaves particularly stained include LI3-6 Mmm2 and R4 & 5 in the NT. Some marginal repair from Hebrews to the end of the NT with the final leaf of Revelation present in facsimile. Recently restored with a full leather binding and custom protective clamshell box. The King James Bible is the first official English translation of the scriptures. When King James took the English throne multiple English translations were used by the Church of England. Recognizing the disunity which this caused he appointed a group of the day's top scholars to produce an Authorized Version of the Bible. The King James Version KJV as it came to be known is not only one of the most widely used versions of the Bible but also contains some of the most famous and beautiful prose in the English language. It is the basis for many commonly used phrases such as "In the beginning" "do onto others" etc" and widely known verses such as the 23rd Psalm The Lord is my Shepherd. Robert Barker unknown
